Enhancement of in vitro Guayule propagation

A method for stimulating in vitro propagation of Guayule from a nutrient medium containing Guayule tissue by adding a substituted trialkyl amine bioinducing agent to the nutrient medium is described. Selective or differentiated propagation of shoots or callus is obtained by varying the amounts of substituted trialky amine present in the nutrient medium. The luxuriant growth provided may be processed for its poly isoprene content or may be transferred to a rooting medium for production of whole plants as identical clones of the original tissue. The method also provides for the production of large numbers of Guayule plants having identical desirable properties such as high polyisoprene levels.

The LSS 4300: A hot counterpart of Upsilon Sgr and KS Per?

A number of observations indicate that the star LSS 4300 is a high temperature analog of the hydrogen-deficient binaries upsilon Sgr and KS Per. A preliminary model-atmosphere analysis based on high-dispersion spectra obtained at Kitt Peak and Cerro Tololo yields T(eff) = 14,400 K, log(g) = 1.4, n(H)/n(He) = 0.003, and n(N)/n(C) = 20 (the corresponding values for upsilon Sgr are T(eff) = 10,000 K, log(g) = 1, n(H)/n(He) = 0.0005, and n(N)/n(C) = 20). The optical emission-line spectrum of LSS 4300 is nearly identical to that of upsilon Sgr, including strong, broad H alpha, FeII and Ca II emission. The ultraviolet spectrum of LSS 4300 was observed with IUE, and can be attributed almost entirely to the visible star. The JHKL photometry of LSS 4300 obtained at Cerro Tololo reveals an infrared excess nearly identical to that of upsilon Sgr. It is suggested that LSS 4300, like upsilon Sgr and KS Per, is a close binary system consisting of a helium supergiant of about one solar mass, and a secondary which is overluminous for its mass due to the accretion of matter from the primary, which is undergoing its second mass exchange.

Contact discontinuities in a cold collision-free two-beam plasma

The structure of contact discontinuities in a collision-free plasma is examined using a model of a plasma which consists of two oppositely directed cold ion beams and a background of cold massless electrons such that exact charge neutrality is maintained and that the electric field is zero. The basic equations describing self-consistent equilibria are obtained for the more general situation where a net flow across the layer takes place and where the magnetic field has two nonzero tangential components but where the electric field remains zero. These equations are then specialized to the case of no net plasma flow where one of the tangential components is zero, and four different classes of sheets are obtained, all having thickness the order of the ion inertial length. The first class is for layers separating two identical plasma and magnetic field regions, the second is for an infinite array of parallel layers producing an undulated magnetic field, the third is for layers containing trapped ions in closed orbits which separate two vacuum regions with uniform identical magnetic fields, and the fourth is for layers which reflect a single plasma beam, leaving a vacuum with a reversed and compressed tangential field on the other side.

A comparison of limb plethysmograph systems proposed for use on the Space Shuttle

Comparisons of a Whitney mercury-filled double-stranded strain gauge with two plethysmographs proposed for Shuttle use - an ultrasound and an impedance plethysmograph - were performed on 20 subjects. An occlusive thigh pressure cuff, inflated to 50 mm Hg, caused partial venous occlusion and subsequent blood pooling distal to the cuff. The average maximum volume changes observed in the Whitney/ultrasound test were 2.07% and 3.35%, respectively, and 2.12% and 2.53% for the Whitney/Impedance comparison. Applying the ratio of the maximum volume changes to the gain of each test system caused the impedance and ultrasound volume change determinations to be essentially identical to the Whitney gauge. The three different limb parameters measured result in significant magnitude differences but the three systems track their respective changes identically.

Influence of gravity driven convection on the directional solidification of Bi/MnBi eutectic composites

The role of gravity on Bridgman-Stockharger directional solidification of eutectic Bi/MnBi has been studied in reduced gravity aboard NASA sounding rocket SPAR flight experiments and contrasted with normal gravity investigations. The directional solidification of eutectic Bi/MnBi results in a low volume fraction, faceted/nonfaceted aligned rod eutectic whose MnBi rod size, interrod spacing, thermal and magnetic properties are sensitive functions of solidification processing conditions. The morphology of the low-gravity samples showed striking differences compared with identically processed, normal gravity samples grown in the same apparatus. The MnBi rod diameter and interrod spacing distributions were significantly smaller, approximately 50 percent, for the low gravity samples compared with identically processed one gravity samples. Accompanying the smaller MnBi rod diameters observed in the flight samples, was an increase in permanent magnet properties which reached greater than 97 percent of the theoretical maximum. Gravitationally induced thermal instabilities in one-gravity which result in irregular interface movement and associated difficulty of the faceted MnBi phase to branch are suggested to explain the morphological differences between one and low gravity solidification.

Real-time 3-D X-ray and gamma-ray viewer

A multi-pinhole aperture lead screen forms an equal plurality of invisible mini-images having dissimilar perspectives of an X-ray and gamma-ray emitting object (ABC) onto a near-earth phosphor layer. This layer provides visible light mini-images directly into a visible light image intensifier. A viewing screen having an equal number of dissimilar perspective apertures distributed across its face in a geometric pattern identical to the lead screen, provides a viewer with a real, pseudoscopic image (A'B'C') of the object with full horizontal and vertical parallax. Alternatively, a third screen identical to viewing screen and spaced apart from a second visible light image intensifier, may be positioned between the first image intensifier and the viewing screen, thereby providing the viewer with a virtual, orthoscopic image (A"B"C") of the object (ABC) with full horizontal and vertical parallax.

Rain estimation from satellites: An examination of the Griffith-Woodley technique

The Griffith-Woodley Technique (GWT) is an approach to estimating precipitation using infrared observations of clouds from geosynchronous satellites. It is examined in three ways: an analysis of the terms in the GWT equations; a case study of infrared imagery portraying convective development over Florida; and the comparison of a simplified equation set and resultant rain map to results using the GWT. The objective is to determine the dominant factors in the calculation of GWT rain estimates. Analysis of a single day's convection over Florida produced a number of significant insights into various terms in the GWT rainfall equations. Due to the definition of clouds by a threshold isotherm the majority of clouds on this day did not go through an idealized life cycle before losing their identity through merger, splitting, etc. As a result, 85% of the clouds had a defined life of 0.5 or 1 h. For these clouds the terms in the GWT which are dependent on cloud life history become essentially constant. The empirically derived ratio of radar echo area to cloud area is given a singular value (0.02) for 43% of the sample, while the rainrate term is 20.7 mmh-1 for 61% of the sample. For 55% of the sampled clouds the temperature weighting term is identically 1.0. Cloud area itself is highly correlated (r=0.88) with GWT computed rain volume. An important, discriminating parameter in the GWT is the temperature defining the coldest 10% cloud area. The analysis further shows that the two dominant parameters in rainfall estimation are the existence of cold cloud and the duration of cloud over a point.

Life test performance of a Philips rhombic-drive refrigerator with bellows seals

In February 1979, tour Stirling cycle cryogenic refrigerators, developed by Philips Laboratories for the John Hopkins University/Applied Physics Laboratory, were launched into orbit aboard the P78-1 spacecraft. The refrigerators were designed to cool the detectors of two identical gamma-ray spectrometers to 77 K reliably for one year. Since launch, the refrigerators, still in orbit, have individually accumulated from 5,000 to over 20,000 hours of operation. As part of those efforts, a refrigerator identical to those in orbit was built, with one significant modification: flexible metal bellows between the crankcase and the working volume to prevent possible contaminants from migrating into the cold region. During the life test of the modified refrigerator, the temperature increase during the first three month run was 0.022 k/day, a negligible level. As of October 1982, the unit has accumulated over 12,300 hours of operation.

Role of soil moisture in maintaining droughts

The influence of soil moisture on the persistence of an ongoing drought was investigated. The case study of drought of the summer of 1980 was selected. The difference in the simulation of two identical twin runs: one with the climatological normal soil moisture and the other with anomalous soil moisture for drought conditions, were examined on the mean monthly circulation. It is found that a reduction in soil moisture did produce a corresponding reduction in precipitation. The pattern of the rainfall anomaly however, was not identical to the soil moisture (evapotranspiration) anomaly but had a good resemblance with observations.

Short-term memory and dual task performance

Two hypotheses concerning the way in which short-term memory interacts with another task in a dual task situation are considered. It is noted that when two tasks are combined, the activity of controlling and organizing performance on both tasks simultaneously may compete with either task for a resource; this resource may be space in a central mechanism or general processing capacity or it may be some task-specific resource. If a special relationship exists between short-term memory and control, especially if there is an identity relationship between short-term and a central controlling mechanism, then short-term memory performance should show a decrement in a dual task situation. Even if short-term memory does not have any particular identity with a controlling mechanism, but both tasks draw on some common resource or resources, then a tradeoff between the two tasks in allocating resources is possible and could be reflected in performance. The persistent concurrence cost in memory performance in these experiments suggests that short-term memory may have a unique status in the information processing system.

Influence of a perspective cockpit traffic display format on pilot avoidance maneuvers

The perspective projections of cockpit displays of traffic information on CRTs as a means of presenting vertical separation information to airline pilots were experimentally studied. Identical sets of traffic encounters were viewed by pilots either using a plan-view or perspective traffic display which presented identical separation information. The pilots maneuvered somewhat earlier with perspective displays and maneuvered more frequency in the vertical dimension. Another feature of the maneuver pattern was the absence of a tendency to turn toward an intruding aircraft. The previously observed bias toward horizontal maneuver is probably not based on the procedural reasons often given, but probably reflects the poorer presentation of vertical separation on previously used traffic displays.

LSS 4300 - A hot counterpart of Upsilon Sagittarii and KS Persei?

A number of recent observations indicate that the star LSS 4300 (HDE 320156) is a high-temperature analog of the hydrogen-deficient binaries Upsilon Sgr and KS Per. A preliminary model-atmosphere analysis based on high dispersion spectra obtained at Kitt Peak and Cerro Tololo yields Teff = 14,400 K, log (g) = 1.4, n(H)/n(He) = 0.003, and n(N)/n(C) = 20 for the visible component. The optical emission-line spectrum of LSS 4300 is nearly identical to that of Upsilon Sgr, including strong, broad H-alpha, Fe II, and forbidden Ca II emission; and JHKL photometry obtained at Cerr Tololo reveals an infrared excess nearly identical to that of Upsilon Sgr. It is suggested that LSS 4300, like Upsilon Sgr and KS Per, is a close binary system consisting of a helium supergiant of about 1 solar mass, which is undergoing its second mass loss, and a less luminous secondary, which is accreting matter from the primary.

The influence of the tropics upon the prediction of the Southern Hemisphere circulation within the GLAS GCM

An examination is undertaken of the sensitivity of short term Southern Hemisphere circulation prediction to tropical wind data and tropical latent heat release. The data assimilation experiments employ the Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheric Sciences' fourth-order general circulation model. Two of the experiments are identical, but for the fact that one uses tropical wind data while the other does not. A third experiment contains the identical initial conditions of forecasts with tropical winds, while suppressing tropical latent heat release.

A computer simulation of thin film nucleation and growth: The Volmer-Weber case

The computer simulation of thin film nucleation and growth, which was previously performed for the case of single monolayer, was modified to include multilayer growth via the Volmer-Weber mechanism. The simulation results show that: (1) the kinetics of multilayer film growth is nearly identical to that of monolayer growth; (2) when no reevaporation takes place, the cluster density resulting from multilayer growth is higher at high coverage than that resulting from monolayer growth; (3) when reevaporation does take place, the cluster density resulting from multilayer growth is nearly identical to that resulting from monolayer growth. This is not due, however, to similarity in microstructure.

Study of high performance alloy electroforming

Using the two nickel-manganese alloy electroforming baths of near identical compositions, panels were electroformed under the same deposition parameters of current density, bath temperature, pH, and pulse plating conditions of duty cycle and frequency. By changing the electrolyte agitation conditions, significant effects on mechanical properties were noted. Since electrolyte agitation conditions on the typical flat panels studied to date will not be identical to those existing on a complex curved shape such as the SSME combustion chamber simulation, it is most important that these effects be evaluated prior to Phase B studies. The subscale chamber has been fabricated and shield support tooling is being made. Electroforming of optimized alloy test bars is being deferred until the electrolyte agitation effects are more fully appraised.

Accelerated and real-time geosynchronous life cycling test performance of nickel-hydrogen batteries

RCA Astro-Electronics currently has four nickel-hydrogen storage battery modules (11 cells each) on test in simulated geosynchronous life cycle regimes. These battery modules are of identical design to those used on the GSTAR (GTE Satellite Corp.) and Spacenet (GTE Spacenet Corp.) communications satellites. The batteries are being tested using an automated test station equipped with computer-controlled environmental chambers and recording equipment. The two battery types, 30 ampere-hours and 40 ampere-hours (GSTAR and Spacenet, respectively), are being electrically cycled using identical 44-day eclipse sequences at 5 C and vary with respect to depth of discharge, recharge ratio, duration of accumulated suntime, and the use of a reconditioning sequence. The test parameters are outlined and the preliminary test data and results are presented.

Mechanisms limiting the performance of large grain polycrystalline silicon solar cells

The open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current of large-grain (1 to 10 mm grain diameter) polycrystalline silicon solar cells is determined by the minority-carrier diffusion length within the bulk of the grains. This was demonstrated by irradiating polycrystalline and single-crystal (Czochralski) silicon solar cells with 1 MeV electrons to reduce their bulk lifetime. The variation of short-circuit current with minority-carrier diffusion length for the polycrystalline solar cells is identical to that of the single-crystal solar cells. The open-circuit voltage versus short-circuit current characteristic of the polycrystalline solar cells for reduced diffusion lengths is also identical to that of the single-crystal solar cells. The open-circuit voltage of the polycrystalline solar cells is a strong function of quasi-neutral (bulk) recombination, and is reduced only slightly, if at all, by grain-boundary recombination.
