Investigating Net-Zero Carbon Microgrids for DOE’s National Laboratory Facilities: A Case Study for Idaho National Laboratory

The concept of net-zero carbon microgrids (NZMs) has received significant interest in recent years considering its promises to provide both energy resilience and carbon reduction. This paper investigates the practical constraints of NZM deployment in a government facility, exploring various cases revolving around the objectives of cost, emission, and energy resilience. The technoeconomic results for one of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) facilities are discussed to identify a practical and economic approach to achieve the net-zero target considering both present and future scenarios. The study shows the carbon reduction, resilience, and economic success of net-zero initiatives are tied directly to the energy portfolio of its electricity provider. The NZMs typically required a hybrid mix of renewable generation and storage assets to maximize onsite clean generation and to provide reliable power during grid outages. Besides supporting the ongoing net-zero effort at INL, this work also provides a framework that can be directly used in other facilities aspiring to become a net zero in the future.

HIGH BURNUP FUEL-COOLANT INTERACTION ANALYSIS SUPPORTING FUEL SAFETY TESTING AT IDAHO NATIONAL LABORATORY

In the near future, experiments on HBu fuel under loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) and reactivity-initiated accident (RIA) conditions will be performed within the Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). These experiments will be performed using the Transient Water Irradiation System for TREAT (TWIST) experiment vehicle. To support these experiments, analysis of fuel-coolant interaction (FCI) energetics is underway. This paper discusses FCIs in the context of light water reactor (LWR) safety, differentiating between the severe accident focus of commercial reactors and experimental RIA test programs where FCIs have occurred. However, it is highlighted that as the nuclear industry aims for increased burnup limits, the FCI events observed in RIA test programs may become relevant to commercial LWR safety analysis. The paper then presents developments to the UW-FCI computer program to enable simulation of FCIs initiated by solid fuel particles dispersing into the coolant during RIAs.

DOECGF 23 Idaho National Laboratory Site Report

Visualization is key to the work we do at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). We support research computing, nuclear science, and educational outreach using both traditional and emerging visualization tools and technologies. In this presentation, we will introduce and summarize INL and its mission, describe some of the visualization resources INL provides, and present example applications from recent years.

Integrated Approach to Post-Irradiation Examination of Nuclear Materials at Idaho National Laboratory

Idaho national Laboratory (INL) is the U.S. lead national laboratory for the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE), providing much of the nuclear research, development and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. INL’s Materials and Fuels Complex hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform post-irradiation examinations (PIE) of nuclear materials spanning multiple length scales. The ability to combine engineering-scale analysis and sub-microscopic characterization provides valuable insights into fuel and structural material behavior and degradation mechanisms. The holistic approach is used to accelerate these materials demonstration and deployment. Selected studies will be presented, highlighting the impact of these techniques on improving fuel reliability, safety, and efficiency, thereby advancing the development of sustainable and advanced nuclear energy technologies.

Idaho National Laboratory Data Acquisition And Processing System

The INLDAS data acquisition and processing system is designed to develop prototype measurements and real-time processing techniques. The INLDAS hardware and firmware currently consists of National Instruments • NI-DAQmx 14.1 • cDAQ-9184 • 9205 • 9211 INLDAS can perform of standard data acquisition functions as well as novel functions and real-time processing algorithms. There are 3 acquisition modes to choose from: • Continuous mode runs when the user hits start, processing data and logging it to file • SWTrigger mode waits for one or more predefined triggers before acquiring data. It will buffer data as well, so it can record data that happened shortly before the trigger • Wakeup mode waits on predefined timers. When a time goes off, it acquires a preset amount of data There are also 3 Data Processing Modes • Normal mode does no processing besides the rolling average • FFT Mode Performs an FFT on incoming data every time the time window has elapsed • STFFT mode

Neutronic Safety Analysis of Pu-238 Production at Idaho National Laboratory

This analysis was completed to support the irradiation of plutonium fuel services (PFS) targets in the NEFT in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) as a part of the campaign to restart domestic production of plutonium-238 used in radioisotope power systems (RPS) by the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) and Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy (NE), Office of Nuclear Infrastructure Program (NE-3). Referred to as the PFS-ATR-GEN1-NEFT experiment, the assembly was designed to hold 46 PFS targets in the NEFT. The scope of this paper is to outline the MOPY method used to calculate the heat generation rates (HGRs), flux, fission density, and quantify the viability of the target design for Pu-238 production in ATR.

Summary of Results for Idaho Accelerator Center (IAC) Experiments with Compact Electron Permanent Magnet Spectrometer (CEPMS)

The Compact Electron Permanent Magnet Spectrometer (CEPMS) shown in Figure 2 consists of collimation at the electron beam entrance, a vacuum chamber for beam transport and a removable 60 degree sector magnet constructed by SABR Enterprises (Ref 2) that is used to momentum analyze the incoming electron beam. There are electron detection planes located perpendicular to straight through and the 60 degree trajectory ports. The planes are designed to accept phosphor screens for time integrated measurements. The screens can be replaced by scintillator for time resolved measurements using gated or streak cameras. The length of the spectrometer along the beamline without the collimator is about 400mm (14”). The spectrometer requires no power supply with controls for cycling or cooling for the magnet. The entire assembly, with magnet installed, weighs about 35kg (75lbs) Figure 3 depicts central and extreme trajectories through the spectrometer for various electron energies. The chamber accommodates a +/-50mm wide detection field relative to the center trajectory. Trajectories with larger momentum (energy) are bent the least. Since the permanent magnet slides off and on with reference to the upstream edge of the vacuum chamber, it can be adjusted to various positions to slightly increase or decrease the central energy thereby changing the range of available energies. Figure 4 shows the effect of changing the location of the permanent magnet on the electron trajectory. A small inward change in r produces a longer trajectory in the magnet therefore, the same energy trajectory is bent more.
