Theoretical confirmation of a 4-Delta ground state for FeH

Large CAS SCF/multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) and modified coupled pair functional (MCPF) calculations are carried out for the 4-Delta and 6-Delta states of FeH using very large Gaussian basis sets. At the MCPF level, 3s and 3p correlation preferentially lowers the 4-Delta state by 0.10 eV. Adding this inner-shell correlation effect to our best CAS SCF/MRCI+Q valence treatment results in a 4-Delta-6 Delta separation of 0.16 eV. This supports the interpretation of the photodetachment spectra of Stevens et al. (1983) that places the 6-Delta state about 0.25 eV above the 4-Delta ground state.

Disorder-induced spin excitation continuum and spin-glass ground state in the inverse spinel CuGa 2 O 4

Spinel-structured compounds serve as prototypical examples of highly frustrated systems and are promising candidates for realizing the long-sought quantum spin liquid (QSL) state. However, structural disorder is inevitable in many real QSL candidates and its impact remains a topic of intense debate. In this work, we conduct comprehensive investigations on CuGa 2 ⁢ O 4 , a spinel compound with significant structural disorder, focusing on its thermodynamic properties and spectroscopic behaviors. No long-range magnetic order is observed down to ∼80 mK, as evidenced by magnetic susceptibility, specific-heat, and elastic neutron scattering measurements. More intriguingly, inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal a broad gapless continuum of magnetic excitations around the Brillouin zone boundary, resembling the magnetic excitation spectra expected for a QSL. Nevertheless, a spin-freezing transition at 𝑇 f ≈ 0.88 K is identified from the cusp in the dc susceptibility curves, where a bifurcation between zero-field-cooling and field-cooling curves occurs. Furthermore, ac susceptibility measurements show a peak close to 𝑇 f at low frequency, which shifts to higher temperature with increasing frequency. These results show that CuGa 2 ⁢ O 4 has a spin-glass ground state, consistent with the establishment of short-range order inferred from the specific-heat measurements. Collectively, these results illustrate the crucial role of disorder in defining the excitation spectrum out of the disordered ground state. Furthermore, our findings shed light onto the broader class of 𝐴⁢𝐵 2 ⁢O 4 spinels and advance our understanding of the spin dynamics in magnetically disordered systems.

A benchmark of Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization method in ground state energy calculations of dimers

Herein we present numerical results of ground-state energies of 9 molecules in the well-established G2 molecule set given by the Gutzwiller conjugate gradient minimization (GCGM) method. The method, beyond the commonly used Gutzwiller approximation, was recently developed based on Gutzwiller variational wave functions. We find that compared to benchmark data given by full configuration interaction, GCGM total energies are reasonably well reproduced with the minimum basis set. To include the dynamical correlation beyond the minimal basis calculations, we adopt the local density approximation for the dynamical correlation energy $E_c$. By comparing the results with benchmark data given by experiments and large-basis configuration interaction, the GCGM total energies with $E_c$ are in general better reproduced, but discrepancies are still observed for some dimers.

Long-range interaction between metastable helium and ground state helium.

Results of analysis for the long-range interaction between ground state helium and triplet metastable helium, which shows that the long-range coefficient is the same for both gerade and ungerade states. Those terms which lead to the second term on the right hand side of a developed equation vanish through spin selection rules.

Photoabsorption by ground-state alkali-metal atoms.

Principal-series oscillator strengths and ground-state photoionization cross sections are computed for sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cesium. The degree of polarization of the photoelectrons is also predicted for each atom. The core-polarization correction to the dipole transition moment is included in all of the calculations, and the spin-orbit perturbation of valence-p-electron orbitals is included in the calculations of the Rb and Cs oscillator strengths and of all the photoionization cross sections. The results are compared with recent measurements.

Structural expansions for the ground state energy of a simple metal

A structural expansion for the static ground state energy of a simple metal is derived. An approach based on single particle band structure which treats the electron gas as a non-linear dielectric is presented, along with a more general many particle analysis using finite temperature perturbation theory. The two methods are compared, and it is shown in detail how band-structure effects, Fermi surface distortions, and chemical potential shifts affect the total energy. These are of special interest in corrections to the total energy beyond third order in the electron ion interaction, and hence to systems where differences in energies for various crystal structures are exceptionally small. Preliminary calculations using these methods for the zero temperature thermodynamic functions of atomic hydrogen are reported.

Ground state properties of spin-alined atomic hydrogen

Theoretical calculation of the ground state properties of spin-alined atomic hydrogen by the Monte Carlo method. The interatomic interaction, as described by the results of Kolos and Wolniewicz (1965), is made fit to a Morse potential form. An appropriate trail wavefunction is formed from the short-range part of the WKB solution for a pair of atoms interacting through a Morse potential.

Ground-state energies of simple metals

A structural expansion for the static ground-state energy of a simple metal is derived. Two methods are presented, one an approach based on single-particle band structure which treats the electron gas as a nonlinear dielectric, the other a more general many-particle analysis using finite-temperature perturbation theory. The two methods are compared, and it is shown in detail how band-structure effects, Fermi-surface distortions, and chemical-potential shifts affect the total energy. These are of special interest in corrections to the total energy beyond third order in the electron-ion interaction and hence to systems where differences in energies for various crystal structures are exceptionally small. Preliminary calculations using these methods for the zero-temperature thermodynamic functions of atomic hydrogen are reported.

Accurate ab initio calculations for the ground states of N2, O2 and F2

Spectroscopic constants and dissociation energies for the ground states of N2, O2, and F2 determined at the CAS SCF MRCI correlation level are in excellent agreement with experiment when very large primitive valence and polarization one-particle Gaussian basis sets are employed. The dissociation energy (De) for N2 is larger than experiment unless the 2s electrons are correlated. The basis set requirement for an accurate determination of De is found to increase with the degree of multiple-bond character in the molecule.

Capturing the ground state of uranium dioxide from first principles: Crystal distortion, magnetic structure, and phonons

Uranium dioxide (UO 2 ) remains a formidable challenge for first-principles approaches due to the complex interplay among spin-orbit coupling, Mott physics, magnetic ordering, and crystal distortions. Here we use DFT+U to explore UO 2 at zero temperature, incorporating all the aforementioned phenomena. The technical challenge is to navigate the many metastable electronic states produced by DFT+U, which is accomplished using f-orbital occupation matrix control to search for the ground state. We restrict our search to the high-symmetry ferromagnetic phase, including spin-orbit coupling, which produces a previously unreported occupation matrix. This newfound occupation matrix is then used as an initialization to explore the broken symmetry phases. We find the oxygen cage distortion of the 3k antiferromagnetic state to be in excellent agreement with experiments, and both the spin-orbit coupling and the Hubbard U are critical ingredients. Further, we demonstrate that only select phonon modes have a strong dependence on the Hubbard U, whereas magnetic ordering has only a small influence overall. We perform measurements of the phonon dispersion curves using inelastic neutron scattering, and our calculations show good agreement when using reasonable values of U. The quantitative success of DFT+U warrants exploration of thermal transport and other observables within this level of theory.

Establishing the ground-state spin of 71 Kr

Nuclei in the vicinity of the N=Z line provide many sensitive probes of isospin symmetry. One example concerns the character and sequence of low-lying states of the T=1/2 mirror pair 71 Kr and 71 Br which has been under debate for several decades. In this paper we report a new measurement of the absolute β-branching to ground and excited states which, taken with our precise lifetime of T 1/2 =94.9(4) ms , gives a superallowed ground state–to–ground state log (ft) value of 3.64(4). This is only consistent with both 71 Br and 71 Kr having the same spin and parity, J π =5/2 – , as expected from mirror symmetry. The β-delayed proton emission to the first-excited state in 70 Se was observed for the first time which also strongly supports this assignment.

Infrared and far-infrared laser magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the GeH radical - Determination of ground state parameters

The GeH radical has been detected in its ground 2 Pi state in the gas phase reaction of fluorine atoms with GeH4 by laser magnetic resonance techniques. Rotational transitions within both 2 Pi 1/2 and 2 Pi 3/2 manifolds have been observed at far-infrared wavelengths and rotational transitions between the two fine structure components have been detected at infrared wavelengths (10 microns). Signals have been observed for all five naturally occurring isotopes of germanium. Nuclear hyperfine structure for H-1 and Ge-73 has also been observed. The data for the dominant isotope (/Ge-74/H) have been fitted to within experimental error by an effective Hamiltonian to give a set of molecular parameters for the X 2 Pi state which is very nearly complete. In addition, the dipole moment of GeH in its ground state has been estimated from the relative intensities of electric and magnetic dipole transitions in the 10 micron spectrum to be 1.24(+ or - 0.10) D.

Cross Sections for Electron Scattering by Ground State Ba; Elastic Scattering and Excitation of the ...6s6p (sup 1)P(sub 1) Level

Differential cross sections for elastic and inelastic (6s6p (sup 1)P(sub 1)) electron scattering from ground state Ba atom have been measured at 5eV, 10eV, 15eV, and 20eV impact energies in the angular range from 0(sup 0) to 130(sup 0). Extrapolation to the larger angles have been performed using theoretical calculations as a guide, and integral and momentum transfer cross sections were derived. Theoretical calculations based on two channel clos coupling and relativistic and non-relativistic distorted wave methods have been compared with the present results. Good agreement between experiment and various theoretical results is found at small scattering angles but significant deviations exist at larger scattering angles.
