Petrographic and Advanced Geologic Characterization Report on One Earth Energy #1 (API# 1211325373)

The One Earth Energy #1 (OEE1, API 1211325373) well was drilled to a depth of 7,099 feet from the Pennsylvanian bedrock to the Precambrian granite. In total, 99 thin sections were taken from Rotary Sidewall Core (RSWC) from 2,275 feet to 6,903 feet; 59 thin sections were taken from Whole Core (WC) from 4,311.5 to 6,519.2 feet for this report. This report details specifically thin section point-counting analysis that includes mineralogical and pore space analysis, including grain size analysis annotated thin section photomicrographs, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and statistics of grain size analysis on Mount Simon thin sections from OEE1. Characterized units include the St. Peter Sandstone, Eminence Formation, Potosi Dolomite, Franconia Formation, Davis Member, Ironton Sandstone, Galesville Sandstone, Eau Claire Formation, Elmhurst Sandstone, Mt. Simon Sandstone, and Argenta Formation.

Towards machine-learning a fully-coupled constitutive model for thermal-hydraulic fracture in geothermal systems: phase I (Final Report)

This project, entitled “Towards machine-learning a fully-coupled constitutive model for thermal-hydraulic fracture in geothermal systems: phase I,” addresses challenges in understanding and controlling subsurface fracture networks, which are crucial for applications like deep geothermal heat mining and deep-crustal minerals/metals/hydrogen extraction. The research focuses on advancing the understanding of coupled thermal-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) processes in geologic materials, particularly under the high temperature and pressure conditions found in the deep crust. This seed grant focused specifically on thermal cracking and the development of new constitutive models. Significant progress was made in both experimental and theoretical domains. To study micro-scale fracture formation, the project demonstrated the ability to create thermal cracking under stress in granite samples using a Paterson Gas-medium Deformation Apparatus.

DEMO-FTES: Development, Monitoring, and Control of Fracture Thermal Energy Storage in Crystalline Rock Formations (CRADA Final Report)

The DEMO-FTES project investigated the feasibility of Fracture Thermal Energy Storage (FTES) as a seasonal energy storage solution in crystalline rock formations. FTES leverages hydraulically induced fractures to exchange heat between circulating fluids and the surrounding rock mass, enabling long-term thermal energy retention due to the high specific heat and low thermal conductivity of rock. This approach has the potential to reduce heating and cooling energy demands and enhance building energy resilience. The project combined dimensional analysis, numerical modeling, laboratory experiments, and meso-scale field tests to evaluate FTES performance and advance its technology readiness level from 3 to 5. Scaling analysis identified key dimensionless parameters governing heat transfer and fluid flow, ensuring laboratory and field tests were representative of larger-scale systems. Numerical simulations using TOUGH and iTOUGH2 frameworks supported experiment design and interpretation, modeling fracture geometry, thermal-hydraulic behavior, and thermo-mechanical coupling. Laboratory tests at EPFL involved creating single and multiple fractures in 25 cm cubic samples of Gabbro and Granite under true triaxial stress.

CO 2 -Responsive Fracturing Fluids for Enhanced Geothermal Systems (Final Report)

Our group has recently developed StimuFrac, a non-toxic stimuli-responsive fracturing fluid consisting of a CO 2 -reactive polymer which has shown at the lab-scale to consistently fracture rock cores at significantly lower net pressures in a range of representative geothermal pressure/temperature conditions. However, until now the mechanism/s responsible for more effective fracturing, of critical importance to optimize fracturing performance as well as strategize injection methodologies for field deployment, was not understood. In this document, we report (1) on the two main mechanisms responsible for fracturing rock at lower net pressures with StimuFrac; (2) the phase behavior of StimuFrac/CO 2 under geothermal wellbore conditions; and (3) based on high-temperature true triaxial stimulations, detailed evidence that StimuFrac/CO 2 is the best performing stimulation fluid under EGS T/P conditions as compared to water, waterless CO 2 , and CO 2 /water fracturing fluids. This is because i) it requires significantly lower volumes of CO 2 due to its reduced leak off into the formation by the crosslinked polymer solution; ii) large fractures can be generated reproducibly at both low and high CO 2 injection flow rates, and iii) the reversible (previously reported) viscosity increase of StimuFrac could be beneficial to transport proppants when they become available for EGS. These results were particularly evident for hot nearly dry rock as well as partially and nearly fully water-saturated granitic rock. GTO requires StimuFrac to be evaluated in fully water-saturated rock to determine whether the above-described performance applies under these conditions. Since (1) GTO considers there is no enough evidence for Sa different StimuFrac formulation to work below 90C (where full water-saturation in an open system is possible) and (2) no polyaxial loading frame larger than a few centimeters that can do hydraulic fracturing tests while maintaining the rock sample fully saturated with water at 200 C exists; PNNL concludes that the only way to determine if StimuFrac represents an advanced fracturing fluid alternative for EGS, is to perform a stimulation in an actual EGS reservoir.

Seismic velocity modeling and earthquake relocations for the southern Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), with a focus on Rock Valley

The Rock Valley Direct Comparison (RV/DC) is the third phase of the Source Physics Experiment (SPE; Snelson et al., 2014), a project aimed at improving seismic discrimination between explosive sources and natural earthquakes. Phases I and II of SPE focused on studying the generation of shear waves in endmember geologies (granite and alluvium, respectively), while Phase III aims to detonate a chemical explosion co-located with the source region of the 1993 Rock Valley earthquake sequence, located in the Rock Valley Fault Zone (RVFZ), in the southern portion of the Nevada Test Site (now the Nevada National Security Site, or NNSS).

Antarctic permafrost processes and antiphase dynamics of cold-based glaciers in the McMurdo Dry Valleys inferred from 10 Be and 26 Al cosmogenic nuclides

Abstract. Soil and sediment mixing and associated permafrost processes are not widely studied or understood in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. In this study, we investigate the stability and depositional history of near-surface permafrost sediments to ∼ 3 m depth in the Pearse and lower Wright valleys using measured cosmogenic 10Be and 26Al depth profiles. In Pearse Valley, we estimate a minimum depositional age of ∼ 74 ka for the active layer and paleoactive-layer sediments (< 0.65 m). Combined depth profile modelling of 10Be and 26Al gives a depositional age for near-surface (< 1.65 m) permafrost in Pearse Valley of 180 +20/-40 ka, implying that the deposition of permafrost sediments predates MIS 5 advances of Taylor Glacier. Deeper permafrost sediments (> 2.09 m) in Pearse Valley are thus inferred to have a depositional age of > 180 ka. At a coastal, lower-elevation site in neighbouring lower Wright Valley, 10Be and 26Al depth profiles from a second permafrost core exhibit near-constant concentrations with depth and indicate the sediments are either vertically mixed after deposition or sufficiently young so that post-depositional nuclide production is negligible relative to inheritance. 26Al/10Be concentration ratios for both depth profiles range between 4.0 and 5.2 and are all lower than the nominal surface production rate ratio of 6.75, indicating that prior to deposition, these sediments experienced complex, yet similar, exposure–burial histories. Assuming a single-cycle exposure–burial scenario, the observed 26Al/10Be ratios are equivalent to a total minimum exposure–burial history of ∼ 1.2 Myr. In proximity to the depth profile core site, we measured cosmogenic 10Be and 26Al in three granite cobbles from thin, patchy drift (Taylor 2 Drift) in Pearse Valley to constrain the timing of retreat of Taylor Glacier. Assuming simple continuous exposure, our minimum, zero-erosion exposure ages suggest Taylor Glacier partially retreated from Pearse Valley no later than 65–74 ka. The timing of retreat after 65 ka and until the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) when Taylor Glacier was at a minimum position remains unresolved. The surface cobble ages and permafrost processes reveal Taylor Glacier advances during MIS 5 were non-erosive or mildly erosive, preserving the underlying permafrost sediments and peppering boulders and cobbles upon an older, relict surface. Our results are consistent with U/Th ages from central Taylor Valley and suggest changes in moisture delivery over Taylor Dome during MIS 5e, 5c, and 5a appear to be associated with the extent of the Ross Ice Shelf and sea ice in the Ross Sea. These data provide further evidence of antiphase behaviour through retreat of a peripheral lobe of Taylor Glacier in Pearse Valley, a region that was glaciated during MIS 5. We suggest a causal relationship of cold-based glacier advance and retreat that is controlled by an increase in moisture availability during retreat of sea ice and perhaps the Ross Ice Shelf, as well as, conversely, a decrease during times of sea ice and Ross Ice Shelf expansion in the Ross Sea.

Insights into the hydro-mechanical behavior of a decimeter-scale fracture using the mini-SIMFIP probe

ABSTRACT: Understanding hydro-mechanical couplings in fractured rocks is essential for predicting the rock mass response during high-pressure fluid injection, including the stimulation of enhanced geothermal systems. However, fluid-driven fracture dislocations are challenging to measure due to the need for local displacement data at high fluid pressures. In this study, fluid-driven displacement across a decimeter-scale laboratory fracture was investigated using the mini-SIMFIP (step rate injection method for fracture in-situ properties) probe, which is a smaller version of the SIMFIP tool (Guglielmi et al., 2014). The mini-SIMFIP probe is able to resolve the full 3D displacement vector of a fracture. The probe was installed in one of two boreholes across a decimeter-scale saw-cut granite fracture. Two pressure step injection tests were conducted under the same isotropic stress conditions. By varying injection between the boreholes, we estimated the aperture profile across the fracture. The results show a consistent pressure-dependent opening as long as steady-state flow was maintained. At a certain pressure step, steady-state conditions were no longer achievable and the fracture opened rapidly. The pressure-opening relationship diverged between the two tests and indicated a homogenization of the aperture profile and an increase in the non-linearity of the flow regime.

Recent Developments at the Raft River Geothermal Field

The Raft River geothermal field, located in Cassia County in southwestern Idaho, is the site of a Department of Energy Enhanced Geothermal System project. U.S. Geothermal, Inc. currently produces about 11 MWe from Precambrian metamorphic rocks. These lie beneath ~5,000 ft of Quaternary and Tertiary volcaniclastic and volcanic deposits. Maximum temperatures range from 271°F to 300°F. Well RRG-9 ST1, the well targeted for stimulation is located approximately 1 mile south of the main bore field. The open hole section of the well, from 5,551 to 5,900 ft MD, consists of Precambrian Elba Quartzite, the stimulation target, granite and minor diabase. Prior to setting the casing acoustic, gamma ray, and density logs were run. After completing the well, a step rate/step down test was conducted. The maximum injection rate achieved was 18 bpm at a wellhead pressure of 1,150 psig. A borehole televiewer run in the open hole section showed evidence of more than eighty fractures. The majority of these fractures trend from N20⁰W to N20°E and dip from 40° to 60°W. Permeable fractures were encountered in the Elba Quartzite at 5,640-5,660 ft MD. Analysis of the injection test indicates that the minimum in-situ principal stress in this zone is 3,050-3,200 psi, corresponding to a fracture gradient of 0.59-0.62 psi/ft. A discrete fracture network model was developed using measured and inferred fracture orientations, distributions and dimensions. A three-phase stimulation program is proposed for RRG-9 ST-1. During the first two stages, water at 140°F, and later 40°F, will be injected to pre-condition and thermally fracture the reservoir. Here, the third stage will consist of a high rate, large volume conventional hydraulic stimulation.

Developing a Drilling Optimization System for Improved Overall Rate of Penetration in Geothermal Wells

Geothermal energy is renewable, reliable and environmentally friendly source of energy. The major cost in the development of geothermal wells is the actual drilling of the wells. The main objective of this paper is to introduce a new real-time drilling optimization system designed for granite formation to reduce the overall drilling cost. In this study, a drilling optimization system is verified using drilling data from Utah-Forge well 58-32. The drilling optimization system used the Utah-Forge well 58-32 data to achieve real-time unconfined compressive strength (UCS). Based on the UCS value from the previous feet, the system simulates the ROP for the next drilling feet. The drilling optimization system utilizes the Differential Evolution Algorithm (DEA), which is a metaheuristic method to search the space of solution, to find the best operating parameters (i.e. WOB and RPM) for the next drilling foot. The optimization algorithm takes a maximum cutter temperature into account as a constraint and avoids the accelerated wear. The developed drilling optimization system improves ROP responses and reduces the drilling cost of geothermal wells. The simulated ROP results from the system show a good agreement with the ROP from Utah-Forge well 58-32 drilling data. The drilling time before and after optimization for both intervals were presented.

Techno-Economic Performance of Eavor Loop 2.0

This project evaluated techno-economic performance for a sample Eavor-Loop 2.0 design for electricity production and direct-use heating. The Eavor-Loop 2.0 design investigated is a 7.5-km deep closed-loop geothermal system consisting of 12 laterals for a total of more than 90 km of downhole well and lateral length. Both a high geothermal gradient scenario of 60 degrees C/km and a low geothermal gradient scenario of 30 degrees C/km were considered. With pure water injected at 60 degrees C and 80 kg/s, reservoir simulations with the Slender-Body Theory simulator indicate average production temperatures over a 30-year lifetime of ~125 degrees C and ~210 degrees C for the low and high geothermal gradient scenario, respectively. These correspond to heat production of ~22 M Wth and ~51 M Wth, respectively. Using IPSEpro simulations, we find average power production of ~2.2 M We and ~8.6 M We, respectively, for a subcritical organic Rankine cycle power plant with air-cooled condensers. Cost estimates indicate the overall capital and levelized costs are dominated by the lateral drilling cost. Obtaining a levelized cost of electricity below $70/M Wh requires a geothermal gradient of 60 degrees C/km, a discount rate below 9%, and lateral drilling cost below $400/m. A well cost model indicates that ~$400/m for the Eavor-Loop 2.0 design investigated can be obtained for a drilling rate of penetration about 40 ft/hr (with bit life of 50 hours), and omitting casing and cement. Traditional (geothermal) well drilling has achieved these drilling rate conditions, including the Utah FORGE project where the rate of penetration has exceeded 50 ft/hr in granite. However, it is unclear if these conditions are still valid for drilling the Eavor-Loop 2.0 laterals (i.e., ~82 km of laterals at 4 to 7.5-km vertical depth with rock temperatures up to 460 degrees C), as such downhole completion has never been developed before. Competitive levelized cost of heat values ($1.2-$8.2/GJ) are calculated, even for the low geothermal gradient scenario (30 degrees C/km) and lateral drilling cost of $600/m.

EFFECTS OF MINERAL COMPOSITION ON THE STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE OF IN-SERVICE IRRADIATED CONCRETE BIOLOGICAL SHIELD

In this work, different types of magmatic rocks used in the construction of concrete biological shields in pressurized water reactors were analyzed for their susceptibility to irradiation damage, determined by the irradiation damage depth in the concrete biological shield after 80 years of operation. The results are as follows: ultrafelsic igneous rocks (e.g., granite) are high risk; igneous intrusive rocks (e.g., diorite, gabbro) are moderate risk; and ultramafic igneous rocks (e.g., olivinite, dunite) are low risk. Risk is correlated with silica content for felsic and intermediate rocks, and with pyroxene content for mafic rocks.

Computational screening of fly ash zeolite sorbents for boric acid removal

In the United States, many impoundments at coal-fired power plants contain elevated contaminants like arsenic, boron, barium, and selenium. Zeolites synthesized from fly ash show promise as sorbents for these contaminants. However, optimizing sorption capacity is challenging due to numerous possible topologies, silicon to aluminum (Si/Al) ratios, and cation types. In this study, molecular simulations are used to design cationic zeolites for boric acid adsorption. Force field models based on quantum mechanical calculations (PBE + D2) for Na-, Ca-, Mn-, and Fe-exchanged chabazite and LTA are presented. The new D2FF force fields reproduce DFT energies with about half the error of UFF. Zeolite performance depends on Si/Al ratio and cation type, with low Si/Al ratio chabazite (CHA) and phillipsite (PHI) zeolite frameworks exchanged with Ca 2+ or Na + /Ca 2+ mixtures showing the highest adsorption. In conclusion, these findings suggest tailored fly ash-derived zeolites could provide effective boron removal from leachate ponds.

Scale-dependent enhancement of productivity and stability in xenic Nannochloropsis cultures

Although bacterial amendments can enhance algal productivity and stability, the development of algal-bacteria consortia for commercial-scale utilization is limited. Here, for this work, we used an established high-throughput approach to generate algal-bacteria consortia, and tested consortia performance at spatial scales from microplates to 320 L raceway ponds. We used both lab and field-reared strains of Nannochloropsis oceanica to build consortia. In some experiments, we imposed environmental perturbations to test the ability of bacteria to enhance algal culture stability. In repeated assays at the scale of well plates, flasks, and bioreactors, strong effects of bacterial amendments on N. oceanica were observed. These effects were most dramatic when cultures experienced stressors such as temperature perturbations or removal of CO 2 augmentation. Isolates that were advanced for field testing included species in the genera Algoriphagus, Oceanicaulis, and Marinobacter. When consortia were generated in the field, positive effects of bacterial amendments were not observed. The amended bacteria were outcompeted, and bacterial community composition across treatments converged after the first grow out. These results highlight the complexity of using consortia in open systems, where interactions between the existing bacterial community, inoculated bacteria, and changing environmental conditions are layered upon other differences in scale and cultivation regimes. Moreover, functionally redundant bacteria are likely present in the field. Following this work, we hypothesize that tight interactions (e.g., obligate relationships between partners) will scale more predictably to outdoor systems. We suggest relying on true synthetic ecological approaches in which the relationships between bacteria and algae partners are well understood, or synthetic ecological approaches coupled with high throughput approaches to design and test consortia. We also recommend future work to examine the effect of algae-bacteria inoculation ratios on productivity and stability, track dynamics of partners through time, and manage ponds to retain beneficial symbioses.

Ni/SiO 2 catalysts for polyolefin deconstruction via the divergent hydrogenolysis mechanism

Noble metal-based hydrogenolysis is emerging as a key chemical deconstruction technology of polyolefins into valuable products. Still, the catalyst cost and availability are significant barriers to handling the large volume of plastics. Cheap earth-abundant metals have been deemed inactive for polyolefin hydrogenolysis. Herein, we report that Ni/SiO 2 is active in deconstructing low-density polyethylene to n-alkanes (C 6 -C 35 ) at mild conditions (300 °C, 30barH 2 ) with maximum liquid yields of 65 wt%. In this study, we expose a new mechanism of long-alkane hydrogenolysis that encompasses chain location-dependent single and multiple C-C bond cracking events and rationalizes product selectivity and molecular weight dependence. Ni/SiO 2 catalysts are reusable and can handle multiple plastics producing feedstock-dependent products (i.e., n-alkanes, iso-alkanes, cyclics, aromatics, etc.). The findings broaden the scope of viable catalysts polyolefin hydrogenolysis and unleash the potential to manage the volume of plastic waste.

Unlocking naphtha from polyolefins using Ni-based hydrocracking catalysts

Naphtha (C 5 -C 12 alkanes) is a platform feedstock in the petroleum industry and an ideal target for reutilizing plastic waste at scale. Hydrocracking has emerged as a promising technology for deconstructing polyolefins to naphtha. However, contemporary catalysts rely on Pt to achieve high rates, while earth-abundant metals (EAM) perform poorly. Herein, we develop high-performance Ni/BEA catalysts for polyolefin hydrocracking, achieving complete low-density polyethylene (LDPE) deconstruction with 80 % maximum naphtha yield within 12 h at 250 °C, 60 bar H 2 , and a catalyst-to-polymer ratio of 1:100. These catalysts are versatile, accommodating virgin resins and commercial polymer products, and are directly reusable and regenerable. Comparative analysis highlights that 5Ni/BEA(25) exhibits the highest naphtha productivity of 11.4 $\huge{(}$$\frac{g_{Naphtha}}{g_{cat}{•h}}$$\huge{)}$, surpassing previously reported Pt- and EAM-based catalysts by 2.5–6.2x. Technoeconomic and life-cycle analyses reveal naphtha from LDPE hydrocracking is economically and environmentally competitive to fossil-fuel-derived naphtha. In conclusion, these advancements pave the way for the industrial implementation of earth-abundant Ni-based catalysts in polyolefin hydrocracking, followed by retrofitting steam crackers to address plastics waste at scale.

Leaching of lanthanide and yttrium from a Central Appalachian coal and the ashes obtained at 550–950 °C

Here in this work, we investigated leaching of lanthanide and yttrium (REY) from a Central Appalachian coal and its ashes obtained at 550–950 °C with the main purpose of understanding the impact of ashing temperature on REY leachability in water, ammonium sulfate, and hydrochloric acid. It is found that the coal contains a negligible amount of water-soluble REY, less than 1% ion-exchangeable REY, and about 28% of HCl-soluble REY. Ashing leads to dramatic changes in REY leachability in both ammonium sulfate and hydrochloric acid solutions, which is believed to be related to transformation and redistribution of organically-associated REY in coal during the ashing process. Ashing temperature significantly affects REY leaching from coal ashes; higher ashing temperature results in lower REY leachability in both solutions. Clay minerals may play a significant role in changing the leachability of REY after ashing. In addition, the results also suggest that the organic matter in the coal is relatively enriched in heavy REY.

Play Fairway Analysis Retrospective GeoRePORTs

NREL, as part of the Play Fairway Analysis (PFA) Retrospective and with assistance from PFA PIs, completed GeoRePORTs for the sites identified in Phases 1&2 of the DOE PFA projects. The GeoRePORT (geothermal resource portfolio optimization and reporting technique) uses two factors to describe a specific project; grade and project readiness level. Grade describes the quality or potential of a project while project readiness level shows the progress of research and development. The categories that factor into the total grades and readiness levels are Geological, Technical, and Socio-Economic.
