Surfactants and cloud droplet activation: A systematic extension of Köhler theory based on analysis of droplet stability

The activation of aerosol particles to form cloud droplets, a necessary first step in cloud formation, controls much of the impact that aerosols have on clouds and climate. Recently, there has been a surge of interest in extending the Köhler theory of cloud droplet activation to include surface active (typically organic) as well as water-soluble (typically inorganic) aerosol components, but a systematic framework for doing this has yet to be developed. Here, we apply a droplet stability analysis to this end. Ideal and Szyszkowski–Langmuir surfactant models are analyzed to demonstrate the new approach, but the underlying theoretical framework is fundamental and model free. A key finding is that superficial densities at the cloud activation threshold (Köhler maximum) are significantly sub-monolayer, with fractional coverage ranging from 69% to 85% for the organic compounds and mixtures studied. The result, significant for model inventories of cloud condensation nuclei, is a weakening of the surfactant effect relative to expectations based on bulk sample measurements. Analytical results are obtained for the loci of Köhler maxima and applied to aerosol mixtures containing an arbitrary number of water-soluble and surfactant components.

Quantitative cross-species translators of cardiac myocyte electrophysiology: Model training, experimental validation, and applications

Animal experimentation is key in the evaluation of cardiac efficacy and safety of novel therapeutic compounds. However, interspecies differences in the mechanisms regulating excitation-contraction coupling can limit the translation of experimental findings from animal models to human physiology and undermine the assessment of drugs’ efficacy and safety. Here, we built a suite of translators for quantitatively mapping electrophysiological responses in ventricular myocytes across species. We trained these statistical operators using a broad dataset obtained by simulating populations of our biophysically detailed computational models of action potential and Ca 2+ transient in mouse, rabbit, and human. We then tested our translators against experimental data describing the response to stimuli, such as ion channel block, change in beating rate, and β-adrenergic challenge. We demonstrate that this approach is well suited to predicting the effects of perturbations across different species or experimental conditions and suggest its integration into mechanistic studies and drug development pipelines.

CROCUS Dual Polarization Ceilometer Data at Northeastern Illinois University Rooftop

This dataset is from the Department of Energy Office of Science funded project, CROCUS Urban Integrated Field Laboratory (https://crocus-urban.org/). The dual-polarization ceilometer (Vaisala CL61) is an autonomous lidar system operating at 910 nm wavelength, providing valuable measurements for understanding atmospheric boundary layer evolution, air quality, and cloud-aerosol interactions. The CL61 measures the backscattered signal intensity alternating between parallel- and cross-polarization signals. The unique depolarization measurement capability improves discrimination between different particle types, such as liquid droplets, ice crystals, and aerosols. The depolarization is highly dependent on the scatterer shape and orientation (spherical vs non-spherical particles), with the linear depolarization ratio providing a measure of dominant backscatter signal component from atmospheric particles at various heights, essentially allowing discrimination between liquid and solid particles. With its efficient optical system, CL61’s improved signal-to-noise ratio compared to traditional ceilometers allows studying detailed vertical profiles of aerosols and clouds up to 15 km height.Datasets are stored in a netCDF data format, and we we encourage users to make use of the associated toolkits available from Unidata (https://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/), Project Pythia (https://foundations.projectpythia.org/core/data-formats/netcdf-cf.html), and our “Instrument Cookbooks” (https://crocus-urban.github.io/instrument-cookbooks) for more information on how to process the metadata-rich datasets.

Waste-to-Energy Technical Assistance for Local Governments [Slides]

The Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) launched an organic Waste-to-Energy Technical Assistance Program for local governments. Organic waste streams, such as food waste and wastewater sludge, represent significant environmental, economic, and social sustainability challenges for municipalities. BETO has funded analyses assessing these waste streams and various aspects of their management, such as existing uses and costs of disposal. Given that these waste streams require local solutions, this technical assistance program provides municipalities with the most relevant data for their decision-making. BETO will fund up to 40 hours of subject matter assistance to municipalities topics. This presentation was made during an informational webinar for the DOE Bioenergy Technologies Office. The webinar recording is posted https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHVvpDw2uQc.
