Comparison Between CCCM and CloudSat Radar-Lidar (RL) Cloud and Radiation Products

To enhance cloud properties, LaRC and CIRA developed each combination algorithm for obtained properties from passive, active and imager in A-satellite constellation. When comparing global cloud fraction each other, LaRC-produced CERES-CALIPSO-CloudSat-MODIS (CCCM) products larger low-level cloud fraction over tropic ocean, while CIRA-produced Radar-Lidar (RL) shows larger mid-level cloud fraction for high latitude region. The reason for different low-level cloud fraction is due to different filtering method of lidar-detected cloud layers. Meanwhile difference in mid-level clouds is occurred due to different priority of cloud boundaries from lidar and radar.

Large-Eddy Simulation of the Variable Speed Power Turbine Cascade with Inflow Turbulence

The main goal of this is to implement a digital filtering method to generate turbulence upstream and a sub-grid model (Localized dynamic k-equation model (LDKM)) in the framework of LES which together enable reproduction of the effect of inflow turbulence on the transition seen in the VSPT experimental data at the cruise condition (incidence angle of 40o and Tu=0.5%, 5%, 10% and 15%.).

Large-Eddy Simulation of Variable Speed Power Turbine Cascade with Inflow Turbulence

Numerical results are presented from theNASAGlenn Research Center’sin-house turbomachinery code, Glenn-HT applied to the Variable Speed Power Turbine (VSPT) experiment at the NASA Transonic Turbine Blade Cascade Facility. The main goal of this paper is to implement a digital filtering method to generate turbulence upstream and a sub-grid model (Localized dynamic k-equation model (LDKM)) in the framework of LES in order to investigate the effect of inflow turbulence on the transition seen in the VSPT experimental data at the cruise condition (incidence angle of 40oand Tu = 0.5%, 5%,10%, and 15%). Although the boundary layer on thesuction side and pressure side of the blades is initially laminar due to favorable pressure gradient, the laminar flow can transition to turbulent flow past a separation zoneon the suction sideor by natural or by-pass transition. This process determinesthe total-pressure lossesin the wake. Therefore, it is desirable to develop a reliable prediction tool to accurately capture the transition mechanism in blade rows operated under the conditions of low Reynolds number andat a variety offree stream turbulence conditions. Our numerical studies reveal that the location of separationis rather insensitive to the level of Tu, however the effect ofincreasingTu seems to be in reducing the size and ultimately suppressing the separation bubble. In addition, we performedspectral analysis to identify the peak frequencies in the region where the separation bubble is formed, which provides valuable insights into the transition/separation mechanism.

Optical calculation of correlation filters

A method is presented for designing optical correlation filters based on measuring intensity patterns in the Fourier plane. The method can be used in general to design any type of frequency plane filter but is especially attractive in the case of a binary phase only filter (BPOF). The method can produce a filter that is well matched to both the object, its transforming optical system and the spatial light modulator used in the correlator input plane. A working filter was produced using the technique, but the filter response was weak. The suspected causes of the weak output are imprecise Fourier plane positioning, nonlinearities in the recording process, and/or aliasing effects.

Two-Dimensional Planar Lightwave Circuit Integrated Spatial Filter Array and Method of Use Thereof

A large coherent two-dimensional (2D) spatial filter array (SFA), 30 by 30 or larger, is produced by coupling a 2D planar lightwave circuit (PLC) array with a pair of lenslet arrays at the input and output side. The 2D PLC array is produced by stacking a plurality of chips, each chip with a plural number of straight PLC waveguides. A pupil array is coated onto the focal plane of the lenslet array. The PLC waveguides are produced by deposition of a plural number of silica layers on the silicon wafer, followed by photolithography and reactive ion etching (RIE) processes. A plural number of mode filters are included in the silica-on-silicon waveguide such that the PLC waveguide is transparent to the fundamental mode but higher order modes are attenuated by 40 dB or more.

'Backscratching' alternative to PRSI pattern recognition

The Backscratching optical correlation algorithm has been proposed for four degree of freedom tracking. In an alternating Cartesian and log-polar implementation, the tracked parameters are scale, rotation, and two-dimenisonal translation. The algorithm has a finite capture radius in the four-dimensional tracking space. The capture radius is dependent on the tracked object, the correlator architecture, and the method of filter computation. Some methods of extending the capture radius are discussed. One is a modification of matched filters, another is a careful consideration of log-polar transform center, and another is an operational method. Some simulations of the filter construction method, in which a larger capture radius is gained at the expense of precision in determining the four parameters are presented.

Decoupling the structural modes estimated using recursive lattice filters

A method is presented for decoupling modal amplitudes generated by recursive least squares lattice filters. The proposed method, which involves transformation of basis functions obtained from lattice filters, is illustrated using a free-free beam simulation. The decoupled mode shape functions are required for the implementation of an adaptive control scheme for large space systems.

Practical Active Capacitor Filter

A method and apparatus is described that filters an electrical signal. The filtering uses a capacitor multiplier circuit where the capacitor multiplier circuit uses at least one amplifier circuit and at least one capacitor. A filtered electrical signal results from a direct connection from an output of the at least one amplifier circuit.

Electronic filters, signal conversion apparatus, hearing aids and methods

An electronic filter for filtering an electrical signal. Signal processing circuitry therein includes a logarithmic filter having a series of filter stages with inputs and outputs in cascade and respective circuits associated with the filter stages for storing electrical representations of filter parameters. The filter stages include circuits for respectively adding the electrical representations of the filter parameters to the electrical signal to be filtered thereby producing a set of filter sum signals. At least one of the filter stages includes circuitry for producing a filter signal in substantially logarithmic form at its output by combining a filter sum signal for that filter stage with a signal from an output of another filter stage. The signal processing circuitry produces an intermediate output signal, and a multiplexer connected to the signal processing circuit multiplexes the intermediate output signal with the electrical signal to be filtered so that the logarithmic filter operates as both a logarithmic prefilter and a logarithmic postfilter. Other electronic filters, signal conversion apparatus, electroacoustic systems, hearing aids and methods are also disclosed.

Numerical analysis of a time discretized method for nonlinear filtering problem with Lévy process observations

Abstract In this paper, we consider a nonlinear filtering model with observations driven by correlated Wiener processes and point processes. We first derive a Zakai equation whose solution is an unnormalized probability density function of the filter solution. Then, we apply a splitting-up technique to decompose the Zakai equation into three stochastic differential equations, based on which we construct a splitting-up approximate solution and prove its half-order convergence. Furthermore, we apply a finite difference method to construct a time semi-discrete approximate solution to the splitting-up system and prove its half-order convergence to the exact solution of the Zakai equation. Finally, we present some numerical experiments to demonstrate the theoretical analysis.

A Solution Method for the Filtered Lifting Line Theory

The filtered lifting line theory presents a continuous form of the inviscid momentum equations of flow over a lifting device, such as a wing or rotor blade, using body forces without mathematical singularities. This theory is also consistent with an actuator line representation of a lifting device. In this work, we present a reformulation of the equations in terms of the local flow angle along the line, which allows solving the stand-alone equations using multivariate root-finding algorithms. This approach can be used to obtain a fast, computationally inexpensive solution of the loading distribution along a wing without the need to perform computational fluid dynamic simulations. We study the requirements in terms of resolution in the spanwise direction and establish the criteria for spacing and minimum amount of points required along the blade to obtain converged solutions. The solutions are compared to results from large-eddy simulations, and we observed excellent agreement with less than a percent difference in quantities along the blade between the methods.

Method of statistical filtering

Minimal formula for bounding the cross correlation between a random forcing function and the state error when this correlation is unknown is used in optimal linear filter theory applications. Use of the bound results in overestimation of the estimation-error covariance.

Recursive Implementations of the Consider Filter

One method to account for parameters errors in the Kalman filter is to consider their effect in the so-called Schmidt-Kalman filter. This work addresses issues that arise when implementing a consider Kalman filter as a real-time, recursive algorithm. A favorite implementation of the Kalman filter as an onboard navigation subsystem is the UDU formulation. A new way to implement a UDU consider filter is proposed. The non-optimality of the recursive consider filter is also analyzed, and a modified algorithm is proposed to overcome this limitation.

Analytical methods for performance evaluation of nonlinear filters.

In the investigation, the filtering problem is considered in the continuous time domain. The postulated simple suboptimal nonlinear filter structure closely parallels the structure of the Kalman-Bucy optimal linear filter algorithm. Two filter performance evaluation methods are developed based on the Kolmogorov equations for the transition density of Markov processes. The expansions in the approximations for the nonlinear system and observation functions are in effect carried out up to second-order terms in both methods. The description of the filter's performance is sought in terms of second-order statistics in both methods.

Properties of multilayer filters

New methods were investigated of using optical interference coatings to produce bandpass filters for the spectral region 110 nm to 200 nm. The types of filter are: triple cavity metal dielectric filters; all dielectric reflection filters; and all dielectric Fabry Perot type filters. The latter two types use thorium fluoride and either cryolite films or magnesium fluoride films in the stacks. The optical properties of the thorium fluoride were also measured.
