Equivalence between Fermion-to-Qubit Mappings in two Spatial Dimensions

We argue that all locality-preserving mappings between fermionic observables and Pauli matrices on a two-dimensional lattice can be generated from the exact bosonization in Chen et al., whose gauge constraints project onto the subspace of the toric code with emergent fermions. Starting from the exact bosonization and applying Clifford finite-depth generalized local unitary transformation, we can achieve all possible fermion-to-qubit mappings (up to the re-pairing of Majorana fermions). In particular, we discover a new supercompact encoding using 1.25 qubits per fermion on the square lattice. We prove the existence of finite-depth quantum circuits to obtain fermion-to-qubit mappings with qubit-fermion ratios r = 1 + 1/2k for positive integers k, utilizing the trivialness of quantum cellular automata in two spatial dimensions. Also, we provide direct constructions of fermion-to-qubit mappings with ratios arbitrarily close to 1. When the ratio reaches 1, the fermion-to-qubit mapping reduces to the one-dimensional Jordan-Wigner transformation along a certain path in the two-dimensional lattice. Finally, we explicitly demonstrate that the Bravyi-Kitaev superfast simulation, the Verstraete-Cirac auxiliary method, Kitaev’s exactly solved model, the Majorana loop stabilizer codes, and the compact fermion-to-qubit mapping can all be obtained from the exact bosonization.

Are Capacity and Energy Loss Equivalent Metrics for Battery Aging Reporting?

Battery aging in research publications and manufacturer specification sheets for individual cells is commonly reported as capacity (Ah) versus cycle number. However, the key measured quantity in battery-powered devices is energy (Wh), which is derived from integrating capacity with voltage. In this work, we compare the rate of capacity and energy loss across a wide range of Li-ion single-cell cycling studies with different positive electrode chemistries, charge–discharge rates, and temperatures. We find that the relative rate of discharge energy loss varies with cycling conditions. For many cells cycled under moderate conditions, the rate of discharge energy fade is only slightly faster than the rate of discharge capacity fade. However, some cells demonstrated up to a 15% decline in cycle count when 80% energy retention rather than 80% capacity retention was used as the end-of-life metric. These results highlight the importance of reporting cell aging based on energy fade to avoid overestimating battery lifetime in full systems.

$2+1$ dimensional Floquet systems and lattice fermions: Exact bulk spectral equivalence

A connection has recently been proposed between periodically driven systems known as Floquet insulators in continuous time and static fermion theories in discrete time. This connection has been established in a (1+1) ( 1 + 1 ) -dimensional free theory, where an explicit mapping between the spectra of a Floquet insulator and a discrete-time Dirac fermion theory has been formulated. Here we investigate the potential of static discrete-time theories to capture Floquet physics in higher dimensions, where so-called anomalous Floquet topological insulators can emerge that feature chiral edge states despite having bulk bands with zero Chern number. Starting from a particular model of an anomalous Floquet system, we provide an example of a static discrete-time theory whose bulk spectrum is an exact analytic match for the Floquet spectrum. The spectra with open boundary conditions in a particular strip geometry also match up to finite-size corrections. However, the models differ in several important respects. The discrete-time theory is spatially anisotropic, so that the spectra do not agree for all lattice terminations, e.g. other strip geometries or on half spaces. This difference can be attributed to the fact that the static discrete-time model is quasi-one-dimensional in nature and therefore has a different bulk-boundary correspondence than the Floquet model.

Many-Body Factorization & Position-Momentum Equivalence of SRC [Slides]

We study short-range correlations (SRC) using the generalized contact formalism (GCF) and quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations of nuclei from deuteron to 40 Ca. We employ different realistic nuclear interactions and extract spin/isospin-dependent nuclear contacts in both coordinate and momentum space.

EPC-ES WIPP WAC Appendix A Equivalence Support Measurements 2019-2020

Characterization of low-level waste (LLW) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is primarily performed by the Environmental Protection and Compliance - Environmental Stewardship (EPC-ES) Characterization Services team and/or the Nuclear Process Infrastructure (NPI--9) Nuclear Material Support Services team (hereafter referred to as the gamma spectroscopy teams). The gamma spectroscopy teams use portable high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector systems for the nondestructive assay (NDA) characterization of LLW. Controlled-approved procedures and processes for the use of such systems to assay LLW items are currently in place. Additionally, a number of performance studies have been conducted by the gamma spectroscopy teams to support the efficacy and quality of assay results generated by the established NDA process.

Demonstrated Low Pressure Loss Inlet and Low Equivalence Ratio Operation of a Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE) for Power Generation

Presentation. An Aerojet Rocketdyne (AR) program was funded by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), part of the U.S. Department of Energy, to evaluate the benefits of an RDE in a turbine power plant system. Aerojet Rocketdyne subcontracted a variety of support for the program with efforts in modeling, diagnostic techniques, and test campaigns. Over the span of the program more than 700 hot fire tests were conducted at 4 facilities with 7 RDE assemblies. This presentation will cover results from the final test campaign conducted by Aerojet Rocketdyne.

Silicon-Equivalent Neutron Dose Estimations

Radiation transport calculations are often used to estimate dose or exposure to components and personnel surrounding a radiation source. The sources for these calculations are decaying radionuclides within the various nuclear materials. Under long-term radiation exposure, some components may show signs of material damage such as hardening, cracking, discoloration, etc. resulting from the dose received from nearby radioactive sources. Radiation dose quantities are a useful means to correlate material damage or degradation to radiation interactions. The degradation is often dependent on how incident radiation interacts and deposits energy into the material. This dependence implies that radiation dose should be properly defined for the material effect of interest. Generic dose quantities, such as total energy deposited, may not necessarily correlate well for degradation of any given material.
