Advances in Modeling Solar System Internet Structures and their Data Flows

With an ever-increasing presence in space, there is also an increasing burden on existing communications infrastructure. We are heading towards an inflection point where the traditional approach of scheduled, single-path communications for space will no longer be viable. One answer is Delay Tolerant Networking (DTN), which takes the once disparate system of point-to-point links and unifies them in a networked architecture, thereby making communications more scalable. However, much work remains for discovering and harnessing the underlying theory of DTN. For example, in the terrestrial setting the interplay between routing domains is well-understood, however this is not the case in DTNs. In this paper, we build up the fundamental foundations of DTN, with an emphasis on modeling time varying networks and data flows across them, with examples of cross-domain routing in a DTN. A lofty goal of DTN is to enable the so-called Solar System Internet (SSI), which implies a standardized and robust suite of protocols. These protocols include routing across disconnected networks using store, carry, and forward mechanisms, which is necessary due to the disconnections, delays, and mobility intrinsic to space networks. Due to these factors, each of which generalize traditional networking, there is a deep and rich theory of DTNs. Here we build off of past successes to broaden this theory while striving to keep actionable results a goal for future implementations and operations. The approach includes modeling the unicast, broadcast, and multicast communications using the language of hypergraphs, which capture the geometric properties of such networked communications algebraically. Also inherent to these networks is their time-varying nature, particularly given mobility, and hence we also cultivate modeling techniques that respect this time dependence. This leads us to develop models using tools from category theory and algebraic geometry, which provide a language well-suited to describing synchronization and optimization over such networks. We also introduce and study a novel generalization of curvature applicable to time-evolving networks, which provides quantitative controls on diffusion processes on the network. Because an interplanetary network would feature links with propagation delays the preclude discovery (feedback) mechanisms, they will always feature a scheduled component. However, it is beneficial to support discovery where possible. While DTNs do not yet have strong definitions for their analogues of autonomous systems or network areas, we show how to join dynamic and schedule-based routing domains, using the language of sheaves, which marks progress towards such definitions. We conclude with a discussion of the progress made, as well as suggestions for future work.

Connector for vacuum-jacketed lines cuts tubing system cost

A low-cost fitting, fabricated from standard connectors, is used for disconnecting flow lines in cryogenic systems. Utilizing vacuum-jacketed lines made from two sizes of tubing welded at the ends, the connectors are stronger and setup time is reduced.

Thermocouples electrically checked while connected to data system

Constant current source is connected across the input of the millivolt measuring system to monitor the electrical continuity and resistance of multiple thermocouple installations without disconnecting them from a data system. This technique monitored gage thermocouple leads during the assembly and preflight testing of the Project Fire reentry packages.

An evaluation of a quick release fluid coupling having identical mating halves

A new quick disconnect fluid coupling features identical halves that provide male/female mating. Advantages are reduction of inventory and renewal of defective seals without installing new ones. Two designs were evaluated: A hermaphroditic connector (coupling half converts from one sex to another), and a nonconvertible coupling using a face or but type coupling- to-coupling seal. The hermaphroditic coupling was found superior. Advantages are (1) fewer seals used, reducing leakage, and (2) defective seals quickly replaced by simply converting both halves from one sex to another. Seals are standard O-rings and protected against contamination. The contributing factors to a low manufacturing cost are the shutoff valve and latching method.

Series transistors isolate amplifier from flyback voltage

Circuit enables high sawtooth currents to be passed through a deflection coil and isolate the coil driving amplifier from the flyback voltage. It incorporates a switch consisting of transistors in series with the driving amplifier and deflection coil. The switch disconnects the deflection coil from the amplifier during the retrace time.

The Apollo Docking System

The Apollo docking system is the means by which the Apollo command and service modules and the lunar module are connected and disconnected during a lunar-landing mission. The system incorporates a CSM probe assembly that mates with a drogue assembly on the LM. Twelve automatic latches mounted on the CSM docking ring provide for structural integrity between the vehicles and for tunnel sealing during crew transfer. A functional description of the flight hardware and the alternate concepts that were evaluated to determine the system best suited to Apollo requirements are presented.

Umbilical Connect Techniques Improvement-Technology Study

The objective of this study was to develop concepts, specifications, designs, techniques, and procedures capable of significantly reducing the time required to connect and verify umbilicals for ground services to the space shuttle. The desired goal was to reduce the current time requirement of several shifts for the Saturn 5/Apollo to an elapsed time of less than one hour to connect and verify all of the space shuttle ground service umbilicals. The study was conducted in four phases: (1) literature and hardware examination, (2) concept development, (3) concept evaluation and tradeoff analysis, and (4) selected concept design. The final product of this study was a detail design of a rise-off disconnect panel prototype test specimen for a LO2/LH2 booster (or an external oxygen/hydrogen tank for an orbiter), a detail design of a swing-arm mounted preflight umbilical carrier prototype test specimen, and a part 1 specification for the umbilical connect and verification design for the vehicles as defined in the space shuttle program.

Helmet and active streamers from radio observations

Large coronal regions disconnected from any calcium plages and identified by their thermal emission at 169 mHz play a basic role in the sector structure of the interplanetary medium. It was concluded that these coronal regions are to be interpreted as streamers.

A model of wind shear and turbulence in the surface boundary layer

A model of wind and turbulence has been described for the surface boundary layer. The wind structure in the surface layer is considered to be a function of the surface parameters, stability, and height. The surface parameters considered are: (1) the surface roughness length; (2) the surface friction velocity; and (3) the zero plane displacement height. The stability parameter, Z/L, where L is the Monin-Obukov stability length, describes the thermal effect on the wind profile. The logarithmic wind profile is used to describe the mean wind field in the neutral boundary layer, and a logarithmic profile with a stability defect is used to describe the stable and unstable atmospheric conditions. For the very stable conditions, the logarithmic wind law does not hold. Under this condition, the layers of the atmosphere become disconnected and large scale frontal motions are the predominate factor in defining the wind profile. Figures are presented which represent some typical wind profiles in the very stable condition.

Stability of large-scale systems under structural perturbations.

A large-scale system is considered as a system constituted of subsystems which may be connected or disconnected from each other during operation. A new concept of connective stability is introduced by which a large-scale system is regarded as stable if it remains stable (in the sense of Lyapunov) under structural perturbations produced by the on-off participation of the subsystems. Algebraic conditions are developed that guarantee exponential connective stability of large-scale systems which may be composed of linear and nonlinear time-varying subsystems coupled by linear or nonlinear connections.
