3D Hybrid Nanofiber Aerogels Combining with Nanoparticles Made of a Biocleavable and Targeting Polycation and MiR‐26a for Bone Repair

Abstract The healing of large bone defects represents a clinical challenge, often requiring some form of grafting. 3D nanofiber aerogels could be a promising bone graft due to their biomimetic morphology and controlled porous structures and composition. miR‐26a has been reported to induce the differentiation of bone marrow‐derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and facilitate bone formation. Introducing miR‐26a with a suitable polymeric vector targeting BMSCs could improve and enhance the functions of 3D nanofiber aerogels for bone regeneration. Herein, the comb‐shaped polycation (HA–SS–PGEA) is first developed, carrying a targeting component, biocleavable groups, and short ethanolamine (EA)‐decorated poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) (abbreviated as PGEA) arms as miR‐26a delivery vector. Thereafter, the cytotoxicity and transfection efficiency of this polycation and cellular response to miR‐26a‐incorporated nanoparticles (NPs) are assessed in vitro. HA–SS–PGEA exhibits a stronger ability to transport miR‐26a and exert its functions than the gold standard polyethyleneimine (PEI) and low‐molecular‐weight linear PGEA. The efficacy of HA–SS–PGEA/miR‐26a NPs loaded 3D hybrid nanofiber aerogels showing a positive effect on the cranial bone defect healing is finally examined. Together, the combination of 3D nanofiber aerogels and functional NPs consisting of a biodegradable and targeting polycation and therapeutic miRNA could be a promising approach for bone regeneration.

Crystallographic Insight of Reduced Lattice Volume Expansion in Mesoporous Cu 2+ -Doped TiNb 2 O 7 Microspheres during Li + Insertion

TiNb 2 O 7 represents a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but its practical applications are currently hampered by the non-negligible volumetric expansion and contraction during the charge/discharge process and the sluggish ion/electron kinetics. Here a combination technique is reported by systematically optimizing the porous and spherical morphology, crystal structure, and surface decoration of mesoporous Cu 2+ -doped TiNb 2 O 7 microspheres to enhance the electrochemical Li + storage performance and stability simultaneously. The Cu 2+ dopants preferentially replace Ti 4+ in crystal lattices, which decreases the Li + diffusion barrier and increases the electronic conductivity, as confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculation and demonstrated by diverse electrochemical characterizations. The successful Cu 2+ doping significantly reduces the lattice expansion coefficient from 7.26% to 4.61% after Li + insertion along the b-axis of TiNb 2 O 7 , as visualized from in situ and ex situ XRD analysis. The optimal 5% Cu 2+ -doped TiNb 2 O 7 with surface coating of N-doped carbon exhibits significantly enhanced specific capacity and rate and cyclic performances in both half- and full-cell configurations, demonstrating an excellent electrochemical behavior for fast-charging LIB applications.

Atomically Precise Hexanuclear Ce(IV) Clusters as Functional Fluorescent Nanosensors for Rapid One-Step Detection of PFAS

Here, the presence of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment is associated with adverse health effects but measuring PFAS is challenging due to the associated high cost and technical complexities of the analysis. Here, the reactivity of atomically precise metal-oxo clusters is reported and the foundation for their use is provided as fluorescent nanosensors for PFAS detection. The material comprises crystalline, water soluble, hexanuclear cerium-oxo clusters [Ce 6 (µ 3 -O) 4 (µ 3 -OH) 4 ] 12+ decorated with glycine molecules (Ce-Gly) characterized by fluorescence emission at 353 nm. The Ce-Gly fluorescence is found sensitive to long chain carboxylated PFAS of CF 3 –(CF 2 ) n –, where n ≥ 6, such as perfluorooctanoic, perfluorononanoic and perfluorodecanoic acids. This unique reactivity leads to a change in the emission spectra in a concentration dependent manner, enabling PFAS detection through ligand exchange and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) enhancement. No significant cross-reactivity from potentially co-existing species, including sulfonated PFAS, octanoic and dodecanoic acids, humic acid, and inorganic ions is observed. With an optimal concentration of 3.3 µg mL -1 Ce-Gly, the method demonstrated detection limits of 0.24 ppb for PFOA and 0.4 ppb for PFNA. These findings highlight the potential of fluorescence-based detection strategies utilizing nanoscale probes such as Ce-Gly as fluorescent probes and nanosensors for PFAS.

Direct Chemical Vapor Deposition Synthesis of Porous Single-Layer Graphene Membranes with High Gas Permeances and Selectivities

Single-layer graphene containing molecular-sized in-plane pores is regarded as a promising membrane material for high-performance gas separations due to its atomic thickness and low gas transport resistance. However, typical etching-based pore generation methods cannot decouple pore nucleation and pore growth, resulting in a trade-off between high areal pore density and high selectivity. In contrast, intrinsic pores in graphene formed during chemical vapor deposition are not created by etching. Therefore, intrinsically porous graphene can exhibit high pore density while maintaining its gas selectivity. Here in this work, the density of intrinsic graphene pores is systematically controlled for the first time, while appropriate pore sizes for gas sieving are precisely maintained. As a result, single-layer graphene membranes with the highest H 2 /CH 4 separation performances recorded to date (H 2 permeance > 4000 GPU and H 2 /CH 4 selectivity > 2000) are fabricated by manipulating growth temperature, precursor concentration, and non-covalent decoration of the graphene surface. Moreover, it is identified that nanoscale molecular fouling of the graphene surface during gas separation where graphene pores are partially blocked by hydrocarbon contaminants under experimental conditions, controls both selectivity and temperature dependent permeance. Overall, the direct synthesis of porous single-layer graphene exploits its tremendous potential as high-performance gas-sieving membranes.

Imaging Field–Driven Melting of a Molecular Solid at the Atomic Scale

Solid–liquid phase transitions are basic physical processes, but atomically resolved microscopy has yet to capture their full dynamics. A new technique is developed for controlling the melting and freezing of self–assembled molecular structures on a graphene field–effect transistor (FET) that allows phase–transition behavior to be imaged using atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy. This is achieved by applying electric fields to 2,3,5,6–tetrafluoro–7,7,8,8–tetracyanoquinodimethane–decorated FETs to induce reversible transitions between molecular solid and liquid phases at the FET surface. Nonequilibrium melting dynamics are visualized by rapidly heating the graphene substrate with an electrical current and imaging the resulting evolution toward new 2D equilibrium states. An analytical model is developed that explains observed mixed–state phases based on spectroscopic measurement of solid and liquid molecular energy levels. The observed nonequilibrium melting dynamics are consistent with Monte Carlo simulations.

Solid Electrolyte Bimodal Grain Structures for Improved Cycling Performance

Here, the application of solid-state electrolytes in Li batteries is hampered by the occurrence of Li-dendrite-caused short circuits. To avoid cell failure, the electrolytes can only be stressed with rather low current densities, severely restricting their performance. As grain size and pore distributions significantly affect dendrite growth in ceramic electrolytes such as Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 and its variants; here, a “detour and buffer” strategy to bring the superiority of both coarse and fine grains into play, is proposed. To validate the mechanism, a coarse/fine bimodal grain microstructure is obtained by seeding unpulverized large particles in the green body. The rearrangement of coarse grains and fine pores is fine-tuned by changing the ratio of pulverized and unpulverized powders. The optimized bimodal microstructure, obtained when the two powders are equally mixed, allows, without extra interface decoration, cycling for over 2000 h as the current density is increased from 1.0 mA·cm -2 , and gradually, up to 2.0 mA·cm -2 . The “detour and buffer” effects are confirmed from postmortem analysis. The complex grain boundaries formed by fine grains discourage the direct infiltration of Li. Simultaneously, the coarse grains further increase the tortuosity of the Li path. This study sheds light on the microstructure optimization for the polycrystalline solid-state electrolytes.

A Simple Route for Open Fluidic Devices with Particle Walls

Open fluidics, allowing liquid in a flow channel to interact with the external environment, is a revolutionary concept. However, fabricating a highly stable open fluidic device of arbitrary complexity, while maintaining reconfigurability, is still a challenge. This is achieved by the use of a patterned substrate and liquids that are covered with functional, readily available hydrophobic particles, providing great flexibility in the construction and use of open fluidic structures. Decorated with a coating of modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to encapsulate the fluids, the study capitalizes on the photothermal characteristics of CNTs to fabricate a device to probe the effects of temperature on tumor chemotherapy. The strategy substantially increases the availability and potential use of open fluidic devices.

Hierarchical Thiospinel NiCo 2 S 4 /Polyaniline Hybrid Nanostructures as a Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Highly Efficient and Durable Overall Water Splitting

The development of a nonprecious, stable, and highly effective electrocatalyst for decomposition of water into oxygen and hydrogen is vitally important for sustainable energy conversion, but it still remains challenging to replace the noble metal electrocatalysts with more economically viable alternatives. Here, in this paper, a polyaniline (PANI) decorated hierarchical nickel cobalt thiospinel (NiCo 2 S 4 ) hybrid catalyst (NCS-P) has been developed that shows enhanced dual catalytic activity for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) compared to pristine NiCo 2 S 4 (NCS). Benefiting from the conductive PANI coating, the hierarchical NCS-P nanostructure exhibits outstanding electrocatalytic activity in alkaline solution with low overpotentials of 273 ± 3 and 77 ± 4 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and low Tafel slopes of 42.2 and 68.5 mV dec -1 for OER and HER, respectively, which are better than those of the benchmark noble-metal-based RuO 2 and Pt/C.

Modulating Charge Transfer Efficiency of Hematite Photoanode with Hybrid Dual‐Metal–Organic Frameworks for Boosting Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

Abstract The glorious charge transfer efficiency of photoanode is an important factor for efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. However, it is often limited by slow kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, a dual transition metal‐based metal–organic frameworks (MOF) cocatalyst, Fe@Ni–MOF, is introduced into a titanium‐doped hematite (Fe 2 O 3 :Ti) photoanode. The combination of Ni and Fe can optimize the filling of 3d orbitals. Moreover, the introduction of Fe donates electrons to Ni in the MOF structure, thus, suppressing the irreversible (long‐life‐time) oxidation of Ni 2+ into Ni 3+ . The resulting Fe@Ni–MOF/Fe 2 O 3 :Ti photoanode exhibits ∼threefold enhancement in the photocurrent density at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Kinetic analysis of the PEC water oxidation processes indicates that this performance improvement is primarily due to modulating the charge transfer efficiency of hematite photoanode. Further results show that a single transition metal‐based MOF cocatalyst, Ni–MOF, exhibits slow charge transfer in spite of a reduction in surface charge recombination, resulting in a smaller charge transfer efficiency. These findings provide new insights for the development of photoelectrodes decorated with MOFs.

Grain Boundary Segregation Suppresses Local Short‐Range Ordering in Nanocrystalline High‐Entropy Alloys

Multi-principal-element alloys like high-entropy alloys (HEAs) have potential applications in many engineering fields due to their unique mechanical/functional properties. While HEAs are generally considered random solid solutions, recent studies revealed that they are prone to short-range-ordering (SRO) due to the complex multi-pair-wise interactions among the constituent elements. Meanwhile, SROs' evolution can sometimes be deleterious, and it is necessary to have control over their evolution. Examining the AlCoCrFe-Zr model alloy, long-range ordering occurs following the expectation of enthalpic predictions. Advanced characterization techniques—transmission electron microscopy, high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction/pair distribution function, and atom probe tomography, reveal that SRO is suppressed in as-milled and GB-decorated NC-(AlCoCrFe)100-xZrx (x = 0–1.5 atomic %). Warren-Cowley coefficient calculations are further used to validate the suppression of SRO. Besides the low segregation enthalpies of Cr, Fe, and Zr, and the high-mixing enthalpy of Cr and Fe, the short diffusion path to GBs due to high-GB density in the NC-HEAs and the higher energy state of the GBs than the matrix promotes GB-segregation that further alters the matrix chemistry and consequently disfavors SRO formation within the matrix. Despite the GB-segregation of Cr, Fe, and Zr, the matrices and GBs remain in a random solid solution.

Periodic Porous 3D Electrodes Mitigate Gas Bubble Traffic during Alkaline Water Electrolysis at High Current Densities

We report alkaline water electrolysis at high current densities is plagued by gas bubble generation and trapping in stochastic porous electrodes (e.g., Ni foams), which causes a significant reduction in the number of electrolyte accessible catalyst active sites. Here, 3D printed Ni (3DPNi) electrodes with highly controlled, periodic structures are reported that suppress gas bubble coalescence, jamming, and trapping and, hence, result in rapid bubble release. The 3DPNi electrodes decorated with carbon-doped NiO achieve a high current density of 1000 mA cm -2 in 1.0 m KOH electrolyte at hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction overpotentials of 245 and 425 mV, respectively. This work demonstrates a new approach to the deterministic design of 3D electrodes to facilitate rapid bubble transport and release to enhance the total electrode catalytic activity at commercially relevant current densities.

Intramolecular Electric Field Construction in Metal Phthalocyanine as Dopant‐Free Hole Transporting Material for Stable Perovskite Solar Cells with >21 % Efficiency

Abstract Low conductivity and hole mobility in the pristine metal phthalocyanines greatly limit their application in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as the hole‐transporting materials (HTMs). Here, we prepare a Ni phthalocyanine (NiPc) decorated by four methoxyethoxy units as HTMs. In NiPc, the two oxygen atoms in peripheral substituent have a modified effect on the dipole direction, while the central Ni atom contributes more electron to phthalocyanine ring, thus efficiently increasing the intramolecular dipole. Calculation analyses reveal the extracted holes within NiPc are mainly concentrated on the phthalocyanine core induced by the intramolecular electric field, and further to be transferred by π‐π stacking space channel between NiPc molecules. Finally, the best efficiency of PSCs with NiPc as dopant‐free HTMs realizes a record value of 21.23 % (certified 21.03 %). The PSCs also exhibit the good moisture, heating and light stabilities. This work provides a novel way to improve the performance of PSCs with free‐doped metal phthalocyanines as HTMs.

Programmable Site‐Specific Functionalization of DNA Origami with Polynucleotide Brushes

Abstract Combining surface‐initiated, TdT (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase) catalyzed enzymatic polymerization (SI‐TcEP) with precisely engineered DNA origami nanostructures (DONs) presents an innovative pathway for the generation of stable, polynucleotide brush‐functionalized DNA nanostructures. We demonstrate that SI‐TcEP can site‐specifically pattern DONs with brushes containing both natural and non‐natural nucleotides. The brush functionalization can be precisely controlled in terms of the location of initiation sites on the origami core and the brush height and composition. Coarse‐grained simulations predict the conformation of the brush‐functionalized DONs that agree well with the experimentally observed morphologies. We find that polynucleotide brush‐functionalization increases the nuclease resistance of DONs significantly, and that this stability can be spatially programmed through the site‐specific growth of polynucleotide brushes. The ability to site‐specifically decorate DONs with brushes of natural and non‐natural nucleotides provides access to a large range of functionalized DON architectures that would allow for further supramolecular assembly, and for potential applications in smart nanoscale delivery systems.

A General Route to Flame Aerosol Synthesis and In Situ Functionalization of Mesoporous Silica

Abstract Mesoporous silica is a versatile material for energy, environmental, and medical applications. Here, for the first time, we report a flame aerosol synthesis method for a class of mesoporous silica with hollow structure and specific surface area exceeding 1000 m 2 g −1 . We show its superior performance in water purification, as a drug carrier, and in thermal insulation. Moreover, we propose a general route to produce mesoporous nanoshell‐supported nanocatalysts by in situ decoration with active nanoclusters, including noble metal (Pt/SiO 2 ), transition metal (Ni/SiO 2 ), metal oxide (CrO 3 /SiO 2 ), and alumina support (Co/Al 2 O 3 ). As a prototypical application, we perform dry reforming of methane using Ni/SiO 2 , achieving constant 97 % CH 4 and CO 2 conversions for more than 200 hours, dramatically outperforming an MCM‐41 supported Ni catalyst. This work provides a scalable strategy to produce mesoporous nanoshells and proposes an in situ functionalization mechanism to design and produce flexible catalysts for many reactions.

Multifunctional Charge and Hydrogen‐Bond Effects of Second‐Sphere Imidazolium Pendants Promote Capture and Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2 in Water Catalyzed by Iron Porphyrins**

Abstract Microenvironments tailored by multifunctional secondary coordination sphere groups can enhance catalytic performance at primary metal active sites in natural systems. Here, we capture this biological concept in synthetic systems by developing a family of iron porphyrins decorated with imidazolium (im) pendants for the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), which promotes multiple synergistic effects to enhance CO 2 RR and enables the disentangling of second‐sphere contributions that stem from each type of interaction. Fe‐ ortho ‐im(H) , which poises imidazolium units featuring both positive charge and hydrogen‐bond capabilities proximal to the active iron center, increases CO 2 binding affinity by 25‐fold and CO 2 RR activity by 2000‐fold relative to the parent Fe tetraphenylporphyrin ( Fe‐TPP ). Comparison with monofunctional analogs reveals that through‐space charge effects have a greater impact on catalytic CO 2 RR performance compared to hydrogen bonding in this context.

Intraligand Charge Transfer Enables Visible‐Light‐Mediated Nickel‐Catalyzed Cross‐Coupling Reactions**

Abstract We demonstrate that several visible‐light‐mediated carbon−heteroatom cross‐coupling reactions can be carried out using a photoactive Ni II precatalyst that forms in situ from a nickel salt and a bipyridine ligand decorated with two carbazole groups (Ni(Czbpy)Cl 2 ). The activation of this precatalyst towards cross‐coupling reactions follows a hitherto undisclosed mechanism that is different from previously reported light‐responsive nickel complexes that undergo metal‐to‐ligand charge transfer. Theoretical and spectroscopic investigations revealed that irradiation of Ni(Czbpy)Cl 2 with visible light causes an initial intraligand charge transfer event that triggers productive catalysis. Ligand polymerization affords a porous, recyclable organic polymer for heterogeneous nickel catalysis of cross‐coupling reactions. The heterogeneous catalyst shows stable performance in a packed‐bed flow reactor during a week of continuous operation.

Highly Efficient Organosulfur and Lithium‐Metal Hosts Enabled by C@Fe 3 N Sponge

Abstract Lithium‐organosulfur (Li‐OS) batteries, despite possessing high theoretical specific capacity, encounter a few practical challenges, including unsatisfactory lifespan and low active material utilization under realistic conditions. Here, diisoropyl xanthogen polysulfide (DIXPS) has been selected as a model organosulfur compound to investigate the practical feasibility of Li‐OS batteries under realistic conditions. A well‐designed freestanding carbon sponge decorated with Fe 3 N nanoparticles (C@Fe 3 N) is introduced into the Li‐OS cells as a scaffold for both Li and DIXPS. The lithiophilic property of the C@Fe 3 N host guides uniform lithium deposition at the anode, and the catalysis of the DIXPS conversion reaction promotes the kinetics at the cathode. Impressively, the synergistic effect of C@Fe 3 N leads to an extremely stable cycling performance over 1 000 cycles in a Li‐OS full cell under realistic conditions.
