Shifting Data Collection from a Fixed to an Adaptive Sampling Paradigm

For domains where data are difficult to obtain due to human or resource limitations, an emphasis is needed to efficiently explore the dimensions of information spaces to acquire any given response of interest. Many disciplines are still making the transition from brute force, dense, full factorial exploration of their information spaces to a more efficient design of experiments approach; the latter being in use successfully for many decades in agricultural and automotive applications. Although this transition is still incomplete, groundwork must be laid for incorporating the next generation of algorithms to adaptively explore the information space in response to data collected, as well as any resulting empirical models (i.e., metamodels). The methodology in the present work was to compare metamodel quality using a fixed sampling technique compared to an adaptive sampling technique based on metamodel variance. In order to quantify metamodeling errors, a delta method was used to provide quantitative model variance estimates. The present methodology was applied to a design space with an air-breathing engine performance response. It was shown that competitive metamodel quality with lower associated error could be achieved for an adaptive sampling technique for the same level of effort as a fixed, a priori sampling technique.

Space flight risk data collection and analysis project: Risk and reliability database

The focus of the NASA 'Space Flight Risk Data Collection and Analysis' project was to acquire and evaluate space flight data with the express purpose of establishing a database containing measurements of specific risk assessment - reliability - availability - maintainability - supportability (RRAMS) parameters. The developed comprehensive RRAMS database will support the performance of future NASA and aerospace industry risk and reliability studies. One of the primary goals has been to acquire unprocessed information relating to the reliability and availability of launch vehicles and the subsystems and components thereof from the 45th Space Wing (formerly Eastern Space and Missile Command -ESMC) at Patrick Air Force Base. After evaluating and analyzing this information, it was encoded in terms of parameters pertinent to ascertaining reliability and availability statistics, and then assembled into an appropriate database structure.

Analysis of thematic mapper simulator data collected over eastern North Dakota

The results of the analysis of aircraft-acquired thematic mapper simulator (TMS) data, collected to investigate the utility of thematic mapper data in crop area and land cover estimates, are discussed. Results of the analysis indicate that the seven-channel TMS data are capable of delineating the 13 crop types included in the study to an overall pixel classification accuracy of 80.97% correct, with relative efficiencies for four crop types examined between 1.62 and 26.61. Both supervised and unsupervised spectral signature development techniques were evaluated. The unsupervised methods proved to be inferior (based on analysis of variance) for the majority of crop types considered. Given the ground truth data set used for spectral signature development as well as evaluation of performance, it is possible to demonstrate which signature development technique would produce the highest percent correct classification for each crop type.

The Global Oscillation Network Group site survey. 1: Data collection and analysis methods

The Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) Project is planning to place a set of instruments around the world to observe solar oscillations as continuously as possible for at least three years. The Project has now chosen the sites that will comprise the network. This paper describes the methods of data collection and analysis that were used to make this decision. Solar irradiance data were collected with a one-minute cadence at fifteen sites around the world and analyzed to produce statistics of cloud cover, atmospheric extinction, and transparency power spectra at the individual sites. Nearly 200 reasonable six-site networks were assembled from the individual stations, and a set of statistical measures of the performance of the networks was analyzed using a principal component analysis. An accompanying paper presents the results of the survey.

An airborne meteorological data collection system using satellite relay (ASDAR)

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has developed an airborne data acquisition and communication system for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This system known as ASDAR, the Aircraft to Satellite Data Relay, consists of a microprocessor based controller, time clock, transmitter and antenna. Together they acquire meteorological and position information from existing aircraft systems on B-747 aircraft, convert and format these, and transmit them to the ground via the GOES meteorological satellite series. The development and application of the ASDAR system is described with emphasis on unique features. Performance to date is exceptional, providing horizon-to-horizon coverage of aircraft flights. The data collected is of high quality and is considered a valuable addition to the data base from which NOAA generates its weather forecasts.

Next-Level Energy Management in Manufacturing: Facility-Level Energy Digital Twin Framework Based on Machine Learning and Automated Data Collection

This research introduces an energy prediction framework at the facility level supported by automated data collection and machine learning models. It investigates whether reducing the prediction time scale allows for applying more complex machine learning techniques and if those techniques improve the prediction accuracy. The primary advantages of this framework lie in its automation of the energy prediction process and its provision of real-time energy data suitable for use in energy dashboards or digital twins. A sitewide dataset was created by combining 15 min energy and daily production data of five shops—assembly, battery, body (electric), body (gas), and paint—from a globally recognized electric vehicle manufacturer. Various machine learning models were evaluated on daily, weekly, and monthly datasets, including, in increasingly complex order: naïve, simple linear regression, net regularized generalized linear regression, principal component regression, k-nearest neighbor, random forest, and Bayesian regularized neural network. Compared to the current state-of-the-art energy consumption prediction for the industrial facility level, this research investigates more complex models and smaller time intervals for higher accuracy. The findings revealed that the more complex monthly models require a minimum of a year and a half of data to operate, while weekly models demand a year of data to achieve improved accuracy. Daily models can operate with only six months of data but exhibit poor performance due to reduced prediction accuracy of production. Key challenges identified include access to reliable, high-quality energy and production data and the initial demand for human labor.

An analysis of gamma-ray data collected at traffic intersections in Northern Virginia

Gamma-ray spectral data were collected from sensors mounted to traffic signals around Northern Virginia. The data were collected over a span of approximately fifteen months. A subset of the data were analyzed manually and subsequently used to train machine-learning models to facilitate the evaluation of the remaining 50k anomalous events identified in the dataset. We describe the analysis approach used here and discuss the results in terms of radioisotope classes and frequency patterns over day-of-week and time-of-day spans. Data from this work has been archived and is available for future and ongoing research applications.

DOE COVID-19 Data Curation Effort: Overview of Initial Data Collection Coverage (March - June 2020)

During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, major case reporting outlets quickly coalesced around two or three primary vendors. Johns Hopkins University and The New York Times were among the more prominent, and all were of great value to the nation, particularly during the uncertain early stages of the pandemic. They primarily focused on three major attributes: number of new cases, deaths, and recovery, but only at the state level. Recognizing that many states were reporting very detailed data sets (e.g., hospital beds) at a count level or finer, the ORNL Pandemic Modeling team embarked on a major data curation effort from March to June 2020 for the purpose of capturing this wealth of detailed data. The challenge of curating this data was daunting. The number of attributes reported by the states grew on almost on a weekly basis. States were routinely shifting their web tool strategies away from easily parsable HTML-based formatting to new Tableau and ArcGIS content. This growth in the sheer number of attributes combined with the unpredictable shifts in data format meant an aggressive and agile combination of automated scripting and manual scraping was required to capture new daily streams. To keep up, the team had to scale up staff and widen its approach for capture and storage. The DOE COVID-19 data collection effort resulted in over 11 million data points being collected, covering over 13,000 unique geographies and over 2,000 unique attributes that spanned predominantly from early March through the end of June 2020.

Modified Data Collection And Analysis Codes Of Using Tcm (thermal Conductivity Microscope) To Measure Thermal Conductivity And Diffusivity

The "data collection" basically involves setting up the thermal wave frequency, laser scan distance, and other parameters related to the experimental setup. The modification of this code is minor and the details of this code can be found in the earlier patent ("thermal conductivity microscope"). The "data analysis" instead, replaces the simplified analytical model by a more complete analytical model, and used a "thermoquadruple" method to solve the analytical model. The efficiency is orders of magnitude improved and the accuracy is also better. Meanwhile, the previous model can only handle a two-layer sample structure. The new, complete model can handle materials with multiple layers (any given number), which is necessary to handle post ion irradiated materials.

Further studies with data collected by NASA's airborne Doppler lidar in Oklahoma in 1981

Continued study of the lidar data collected in 1981 has resulted in significant new improvements in the analysis techniques reported by Bluestein et al. (1985) and McCaul (1985). Through comparison of fore- and aft-derived scalar fields of intensity and spectral width, the self-consistency of the lidar moment estimates was assessed. Reflectivity estimates were found to be quite stable and reliable, while spectral widths were prone to become noisy if signal to noise ratio (SNR) fell below 12 dB. In addition, spectral widths contained a significant component due to radial velocity gradients in areas along gust fronts, and these components were different along the fore and aft lines of sight. Significant improvement in agreement between the fore and aft fields of spectral width was obtained by estimating the radial velocity gradient component and then removing it from the raw measured widths to yield only the turbulent portion of the contribution to width. Additional analyses showed that lidar-derived vorticity estimates were consistent with several approximate models of vorticity growth along gust front zones, and with the hypothesis that Helmholtz instability could have been responsible for vortices seen along part of the gust front of 30 June 1981. Computations of divergence transverse to axes through an isolated cumulus congestus indicated that the strongest convergence tended to lie along an axis parallel to the congestus. This and the results of other additional analyses seem to suggest that the lidar winds do indeed accurately reflected the basic features of the real wind field.
