Search for Inelastic Dark Matter in Events with Two Displaced Muons and Missing Transverse Momentum in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for dark matter in events with a displaced nonresonant muon pair and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 of proton-proton ( p p ) collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV produced by the LHC in 2016–2018. No significant excess over the predicted backgrounds is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the inelastic dark matter production cross section σ ( p p → A ′ → χ 1 χ 2 ) and the decay branching fraction B ( χ 2 → χ 1 μ + μ − ) , where A ′ is a dark photon and χ 1 and χ 2 are states in the dark sector with near mass degeneracy. This is the first dedicated collider search for inelastic dark matter. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Distinguishing resonance symmetries with energy-resolved photoion angular distributions from ion-pair formation in O 2 following two-photon absorption of a 9.3 eV femtosecond pulse

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the photodissociation dynamics of ion-pair formation in O 2 following resonant two-photon absorption of a 9.3 eV femtosecond pulse, where the resulting O + ions are detected using 3-D momentum imaging. Ion-pair formation states of $^3\Sigma^-_g$ and $^3\Pi_g$ symmetry are accessed through predissociation of optically dark continuum Rydberg states converging to the B $^2\Sigma^-_g$ ionic state, which are resonantly populated via a mixture of both parallel-parallel and parallel-perpendicular two-photon transitions. This mixture is evident in the angular distribution of the dissociation relative to the light polarization, and varies with the kinetic energy release (KER) of the fragmenting ion-pair. The KER-dependent photoion angular distribution reveals the underlying two-photon absorption dynamics involved in the ion-pair production mechanism and indicates the existence of two nearly degenerate continuum resonances possessing different symmetries, which can both decay by coupling to ion-pair states of the same total symmetry through internal conversion.

Search for Dark Matter Produced in Association with a Dark Higgs Boson in the b b ¯ Final State Using p p Collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

A search is performed for dark matter particles produced in association with a resonantly produced pair of b -quarks with 30 < m b b < 150 GeV using 140 fb − 1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. This signature is expected in extensions of the standard model predicting the production of dark matter particles, in particular those containing a dark Higgs boson s that decays into b b ¯ . The highly boosted s → b b ¯ topology is reconstructed using jet reclustering and a new identification algorithm. This search places stringent constraints across regions of the dark Higgs model parameter space that satisfy the observed relic density, excluding dark Higgs bosons with masses between 30 and 150 GeV in benchmark scenarios with Z ′ mediator masses up to 4.8 TeV at 95% confidence level. © 2025 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration 2025 CERN

Observation of Low-Lying Isomeric States in 136 Cs: A New Avenue for Dark Matter and Solar Neutrino Detection in Xenon Detectors

We report on new measurements establishing the existence of low-lying isomeric states in 136 Cs using γ rays produced in 136 Xe(p,n) 136 Cs reactions. Here, two states with O(100) ns lifetimes are placed in the decay sequence of the 136 Cs levels that are populated in charged-current interactions of solar neutrinos and fermionic dark matter with 136 Xe. Xenon-based experiments can therefore exploit a delayed-coincidence tag of these interactions, greatly suppressing backgrounds to enable spectroscopic studies of solar neutrinos and dark matter.

Sub-100-fs energy transfer in coenzyme NADH is a coherent process assisted by a charge-transfer state

Excitation energy transfer (EET) is a key photoinduced process in biological chromophoric assemblies. Here we investigate the factors which can drive EET into efficient ultrafast sub-ps regimes. We demonstrate how a coherent transport of electronic population could facilitate this in water solvated NADH coenzyme and uncover the role of an intermediate dark charge-transfer state. High temporal resolution ultrafast optical spectroscopy gives a 54 ± 11 fs time constant for the EET process. Nonadiabatic quantum dynamical simulations computed through the time-evolution of multidimensional wavepackets suggest that the population transfer is mediated by photoexcited molecular vibrations due to strong coupling between the electronic states. The polar aqueous solvent environment leads to the active participation of a dark charge transfer state, accelerating the vibronically coherent EET process in favorably stacked conformers and solvent cavities. Our work demonstrates how the interplay of structural and environmental factors leads to diverse pathways for the EET process in flexible heterodimers and provides general insights relevant for coherent EET processes in stacked multichromophoric aggregates like DNA strands.

Quantifying scalar field dynamics with DESI 2024 Y1 BAO measurements

Quintessence scalar fields are a natural candidate for evolving dark energy. Unlike the phenomenological w 0 ⁢w a parameterization of the dark energy equation of state, they cannot accommodate the phantom regime of dark energy w⁡(z) <–1, or crossings into the phantom regime. Recent baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) indicate a preference for evolving dark energy over a cosmological constant, ranging from 2.6⁢σ –3.9⁢σ when fitting to w 0⁢ w a , and combining the DESI BAO measurements with other cosmological probes. In this work, we directly fit three simple scalar field models to the DESI BAO data, combined with cosmic microwave background anisotropy measurements and supernova datasets. We find the best fit model to include a 2–4% kinetic scalar field energy Ω scf,k , for a canonical scalar field with a quadratic or linear potential. However, only the DESY-Y5 supernova dataset combination shows a preference for quintessence over Λ cold dark matter (CDM) at the 95% confidence level. Fitting to the supernova datasets Pantheon, Pantheon+, DES-Y5, and Union3, we show that the mild tension (n σ < 3.4) under Λ ⁢CDM emerges from a BAO preference for smaller values of fractional mass-energy density Ω m < 0.29, while all supernova datasets, except for Pantheon, prefer larger values, Ω m > 0.3. The tension under Λ ⁢CDM remains noticeable (n σ < 2.8), when replacing two of the DESI BAO redshift bins with effective redshifts z eff = 0.51, and z eff = 0.706 with comparable BOSS DR 12 BAO measurements at z eff = 0.51, and z eff = 0.61. Furthermore, canonical scalar fields as dark energy are successful in mitigating that tension.

Confronting Dark Matter with the Multiwavelength Sky (Final Technical Report)

The existence of dark matter is a key clue to new fundamental physics, yet its nature and non-gravitational interactions remain mysterious. In the course of this five-year project (spanning July 2015 - July 2020), we have developed novel analysis techniques to separate dark matter signals from astrophysical backgrounds in the inner Galaxy, and measured hitherto-unknown properties of the Fermi Bubbles and the Galactic Center excess in gamma-rays from the inner Milky Way. We have improved predictions for the spatial distribution and energy spectra of photon signals from dark matter, and set new limits from astrophysical and cosmological datasets on dark matter inhabiting complex dark sectors, multi-particle dark matter annihilation, and tiny primordial black holes. We have successfully adapted effective field theory techniques from collider physics to make high-precision predictions for signals from heavy weakly-interacting DM, allowing us to essentially exclude the possibility that DM is a thermal wino, and have discovered novel theoretical and observational implications for dark matter bound states and self-interactions. We have developed a comprehensive public code package for modeling the effects of exotic energy injections, such as from dark matter annihilation and decay, on the ionization and temperature history of the early cosmos, and have used these tools to set robust, powerful and broadly-applicable constraints on models of light dark matter.

DESI 2024 VI: cosmological constraints from the measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations

We present cosmological results from the measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in galaxy, quasar and Lyman-α forest tracers from the first year of observations from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), to be released in the DESI Data Release 1. DESI BAO provide robust measurements of the transverse comoving distance and Hubble rate, or their combination, relative to the sound horizon, in seven redshift bins from over 6 million extragalactic objects in the redshift range 0.1 < z < 4.2. To mitigate confirmation bias, a blind analysis was implemented to measure the BAO scales. DESI BAO data alone are consistent with the standard flat ΛCDM cosmological model with a matter density Ω m =0.295±0.015. Paired with a baryon density prior from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and the robustly measured acoustic angular scale from the cosmic microwave background (CMB), DESI requires H 0 =(68.52±0.62) km s -1 Mpc -1 . In conjunction with CMB anisotropies from Planck and CMB lensing data from Planck and ACT, we find Ω m =0.307± 0.005 and H 0 =(67.97±0.38) km s -1 Mpc -1 . Extending the baseline model with a constant dark energy equation of state parameter w, DESI BAO alone requirew=-0.99 +0.15 -0.13 . In models with a time-varying dark energy equation of state parametrised by w 0 and w a , combinations of DESI with CMB or with type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) individually prefer w 0 > -1 and w a < 0. This preference is 2.6σ for the DESI+CMB combination, and persists or grows when SN Ia are added in, giving results discrepant with the ΛCDM model at the 2.5σ, 3.5σ or 3.9σ levels for the addition of the Pantheon+, Union3, or DES-SN5YR supernova datasets respectively. For the flat ΛCDM model with the sum of neutrino mass ∑ m ν free, combining the DESI and CMB data yields an upper limit ∑ m ν < 0.072 (0.113) eV at 95% confidence for a ∑ m ν > 0 (∑ m ν > 0.059) eV prior. These neutrino-mass constraints are substantially relaxed if the background dynamics are allowed to deviate from flat ΛCDM.

Spin-dependent scattering of sub-GeV dark matter: Models and constraints

We calculate the scattering rate of sub-GeV dark matter in solid-state targets for spin-dependent dark matter–nucleon interactions. For dark matter particles with mass below 100 MeV, the scattering occurs predominantly through incoherent phonon production. For dark matter heavier than 100 MeV, we match onto the nuclear recoil calculation. To compare the sensitivity of future direct detection experiments with existing constraints, we consider three models with interactions that are mediated by spin-0 or spin-1 particles. This allows us to derive bounds on the cross section from searches for the mediating particle, including bounds from stellar cooling, beam dump experiments, meson factories, and dark matter self-interactions. The existing bounds are very stringent, though for 𝑚 𝜒 ≳100 MeV there is parameter space, which may be accessible with direct detection, depending on the exposure and background rates.

Shake-Down Spectroscopy as State- and Site-Specific Probe of Ultrafast Chemical Dynamics

Tracking the multifarious ultrafast electronic and structural changes occurring in a molecule during a photochemical transformation is a challenging endeavor that benefits from recent experimental and computational progress in time-resolved techniques. Measurements of valence electronic states, which provide a global picture of the bonding structure of the molecule, and core electronic states, which provide insight into the local environment, traditionally require different approaches and are often studied separately. Here, we demonstrate that X-ray pulses from a seeded free-electron laser (FEL) enable the measurement of high-resolution, time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) that capture weak satellite states resulting from shake-down processes in a valence-excited molecule. This approach effectively combines the advantages of both valence- and core-state investigations. We applied this method to investigate photoexcited CS2 molecules, where the role of internal conversion (IC) and intersystem crossing (ISC) in determining the predissociation dynamics is controversial. We present XPS spectra from photoexcited CS2, obtained at the FERMI FEL. High-resolution measurements, compared to the corresponding spectra obtained from accurate multireference quantum chemical calculations, reveal that shake-down satellite channels are highly sensitive to both valence electronic and geometric changes. Previous studies of the predissociation dynamics have led to uncertain assignments of the branching between singlet and triplet excited states. We derive a propensity rule that demonstrates the spin-selectivity of the shake-downs. This selectivity allows us to unequivocally assign contributions from the bright and dark singlet excited states, with populations tracked along the predissociation dynamic pathway.

Charge-Transfer Luminescence in a Molecular Donor–Acceptor Complex: Computational Insights

Donor–acceptor molecular complexes are a popular class of materials utilizing charge-transfer states for practical applications. A recent class of donor–acceptor dyads based on the fluorescent BODIPY functionalized with triphenylamine (TPA) shows the peculiar property of dual fluorescence. It is hypothesized that instead of the sensitized charge-transfer state being optically dark, it provides an additional bright radiative pathway. In this study, we use time-dependent density functional theory to characterize the energetic alignment of excitonic and charge-transfer states in a BODIPY-TPA molecular complex. We observe that using a long-range exchange corrected functional in combination with state-specific solvation scheme gives a qualitatively correct alignment of the exciton and charge-transfer states and an enhancement in oscillator strength for the equilibrium solvated charge-transfer state, in agreement with experiment. Furthermore, this work provides rationalization of charge-transfer state emission and provides a foundation to explore charge-transfer using ab initio excited-state nonadiabatic dynamics.

X-ray transient absorption reveals the 1Au (nπ*) state of pyrazine in electronic relaxation

Abstract Electronic relaxation in organic chromophores often proceeds via states not directly accessible by photoexcitation. We report on the photoinduced dynamics of pyrazine that involves such states, excited by a 267 nm laser and probed with X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy in a table-top setup. In addition to the previously characterized 1 B 2u (ππ*) (S 2 ) and 1 B 3u (nπ*) (S 1 ) states, the participation of the optically dark 1 A u (nπ*) state is assigned by a combination of experimental X-ray core-to-valence spectroscopy, electronic structure calculations, nonadiabatic dynamics simulations, and X-ray spectral computations. Despite 1 A u (nπ*) and 1 B 3u (nπ*) states having similar energies at relaxed geometry, their X-ray absorption spectra differ largely in transition energy and oscillator strength. The 1 A u (nπ*) state is populated in 200 ± 50 femtoseconds after electronic excitation and plays a key role in the relaxation of pyrazine to the ground state.

Apparent 𝑤 <−1 and a Lower 𝑆 8 from Dark Axion and Dark Baryons Interactions

We show that a simple coupling between dark energy and dark matter can simultaneously address two distinct hints at new physics coming from cosmological observations. The first is the recent evidence from the DESI project and supernovae observations that the dark energy equation of state w is evolving over cosmic time from an earlier value that is <-1 to a present-day value >-1. The second observation is the so-called S8 tension, describing the suppression of the growth of matter overdensities compared to that expected in the ΛCDM model. Here, we propose a stable, technically natural particle physics implementation of this idea, in which dark matter consists of dark baryons in a strongly coupled hidden sector, and the dark energy field is the associated dark axion. The time variation of the dark matter mass results in an effective dark energy equation of state that exhibits a phantom crossing behavior consistent with recent results. It also results in a slight delay in matter-radiation equality, which suppresses the overall growth of density perturbations.

General Astrophysics with TPF: Not Just Dark Energy

Besides searching for Earth-LIke Planets, TPF can study Jupiters, Neptunes, and all sorts of exotic planets. It can image debris-disks, YSO disks, AGN disks, maybe even AGB disks. And you are probably aware that a large optical space telescope like TPF-C or TPF-O can be a fantastic tool for studying the equation of state of the Dark Energy. I will review some of the future science of TPF-C, TPF-I and TPF-O, focusing on the applications of TPF to the study of objects in our Galaxy: especially circumstellar disks and planets other than exo-Earths.

Stimulated Emission of Signal Photons from Dark Matter Waves

The manipulation of quantum states of light has resulted in significant advancements in both dark matter searches and gravitational wave detectors. Current dark matter searches operating in the microwave frequency range use nearly quantum-limited amplifiers. Future high frequency searches will use photon counting techniques to evade the standard quantum limit. We present a signal enhancement technique that utilizes a superconducting qubit to prepare a superconducting microwave cavity in a nonclassical Fock state and stimulate the emission of a photon from a dark matter wave. By initializing the cavity in an | n = 4 ⟩ Fock state, we demonstrate a quantum enhancement technique that increases the signal photon rate and hence also the dark matter scan rate each by a factor of 2.78. Using this technique, we conduct a dark photon search in a band around 5.965 GHz ( 24.67 μ eV ), where the kinetic mixing angle ε ≥ 4.35 × 10 − 13 is excluded at the 90% confidence level. Continuum-mediated self-interacting dark matter

Dark matter may self-interact through a continuum of low-mass states. This happens if dark matter couples to a strongly-coupled nearly-conformal hidden sector. This type of theory is holographically described by brane-localized dark matter interacting with bulk fields in a slice of 5D anti-de Sitter space. The long-range potential in this scenario depends on a non-integer power of the spatial separation, in contrast to the Yukawa potential generated by the exchange of a single 4D mediator. The resulting self-interaction cross section scales like a non-integer power of velocity. We identify the Born, classical and resonant regimes and investigate them using state-of-the-art numerical methods. We demonstrate the viability of our continuum-mediated framework to address the astrophysical small-scale structure anomalies. Investigating the continuum-mediated Sommerfeld enhancement, we demonstrate that a pattern of resonances can occur depending on the non-integer power. We conclude that continuum mediators introduce novel power-law scalings which open new possibilities for dark matter self-interaction phenomenology.

Cyanobacteria dynamically regulate phycobilisome-to-photosystem excitation energy transfer

In cyanobacteria and red algae, the phycobilisome (PBS) absorbs light and transfers its energy to the chlorophylls in photosystems II (PSII) and I (PSI). With the help of target analysis of time-resolved emission spectra measured at room temperature (RT) and at 77 K, we establish a general kinetic scheme for excitation energy transfer (EET) and trapping based upon a PBS-PSII-PSI megacomplex. At RT it is found that in the dark-adapted cells (State II), the terminal emitter of PBS, allophycocyanin APC680, transfers energy to PSII and PSI with equal rates of ≈50 ns −1 , and that spillover from PSII to PSI is present with rate ≈6 ns −1 . At 77 K, upon transition from State I to State II the EET rate from APC680 to PSII is constant, whereas the rate to PSI increases by 67%. This indicates that a structural change in EET distance in the PBS-PSII-PSI megacomplex underlies the state transition.
