Rapid isolation of cyclotron-produced gallium-68

Methods for rapid isolation of radionuclides (e.g., 68Ga) produced using a cyclotron and methods for recycling of the parent isotope (e.g., 68Zn) are disclosed. In one version of the method, a solution including a radionuclide (e.g., 68Ga) is created from a target including cations (e.g., 68Zn). The solution including the radionuclide is passed through a first column including a sorbent comprising a hydroxamate resin to adsorb the radionuclide on the sorbent, and the radionuclide is eluted off the sorbent. The cations (e.g., 68Zn) are recovered from a recovery solution that has passed through the first column by passing the recovery solution through a second column including a second sorbent comprising a cation exchange resin.

Multiple frequency electron cyclotron resonance thruster

An electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) thruster includes a magnetic field source configured to generate a magnetic field, a thruster body that defines a chamber, the thruster body being disposed relative to the magnetic field source such that the magnetic field is present in the chamber and such that a magnetic nozzle is established, an antenna configured to propagate radio frequency (RF) power within the chamber, and a waveform generator coupled to the antenna to generate an RF waveform for the RF power. The waveform generator is configured such that the RF waveform includes multiple frequencies.

Cyclotron production of a 204 Bi/ 204m Pb generator by 24 MeV proton irradiation of natural Pb foil targets

This work focuses on the formation of a generator of 204 Bi/ 204m Pb for future applications in perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy and biological radiotracing with lead and bismuth isotopes. Generators were formed from the irradiation of natural Pb targets with 24 MeV protons producing 203,204,205,206,207 Bi that were rapidly dissolved in 3 M HNO 3 and 30 % H 2 O 2 and exchanged into a 0.1 M HCl matrix. Use of 100 mg anion exchange resin (AG 1-x8) allowed 203,204m Pb to be eluted in 600 μL of 0.1 M HCl. Furthermore, the longer-lived 205,206 Bi were eluted in 5 mL or 3 mL of either 0.25 M sodium acetate buffer pH 4.4 or 1.0 M H 2 SO 4 . Initial radiolabeling was conducted with eluted 206 Bi using DTPA and DOTA and 203 Pb using TCMC-Azide.

Nonlinear control of safety factor gradient in tokamaks using spatially variable electron cyclotron current drives

Active control of plasma properties may be necessary to achieve stable operation of next-generation tokamaks over large time scales. Such control algorithms can regulate the plasma properties to avoid the onset of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities. For instance, the global and local properties of the safety factor profile are linked to the onset of neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs). This work proposes a model-based control approach for deterring/delaying NTMs through active modulation of one of the safety factor properties - the gradient of the safety factor profile at a particular rational safety factor surface. In particular, a novel control-oriented model for the local safety factor gradient is developed. The nonlinear control model is governed by a nonautonomous ordinary differential equation that accounts for a given rational safety factor surface’s spatial variation over time. Further, to improve the controllability of the spatially evolving parameter, the control model treats ECH&CD positions, along with noninductive powers, as controllable variables. A nonlinear control algorithm based on feedback linearization with optimization is synthesized to achieve the objective of regulating the safety factor gradient around a given target. The proposed algorithm allocates optimal ECH&CD positions, in addition to auxiliary powers, at each time instant as the rational safety factor surface drifts to locations with a low control authority. Stability guarantees of the proposed control law are also discussed in this work. The proposed algorithm is tested for a DIII-D tokamak scenario in nonlinear simulations carried out using the Control Oriented Transport SIMulator (COTSIM). Both fixed and moving ECH&CD cases are studied, and their outcomes are compared. Simulation results demonstrate that enthusiastic regulation of the safety factor gradient can be achieved during the ramp-up and flat-top phases of tokamak operation in both fixed and moving ECH&CD cases. However, real-time updates of ECH&CD positions can prevent the saturation of auxiliary powers.

Valence states of cyclotron-produced thallium

The unexpected behavior of thallium atoms, produced in a reaction of gold target with accelerated 3 He ions, in liquid–liquid extraction with [C n mim][NTf 2 ] ionic liquids ( n = 2, 4, 6–8, 10) was investigated. Contrary to the general expectations, a significant proportion of thallium produced in the nuclear reaction was found in a non-monovalent state upon dissolution of the KCl aerosol collector. This finding is critical for the design and evaluation of the forthcoming chemistry experiments with the superheavy element nihonium.

High Fermi velocities and small cyclotron masses in LaAlGe

Here, we report quantum oscillation measurements of LaAlGe, a Lorentz-violating type-II Weyl semimetal with tilted Weyl cones. Very small quasiparticle masses and very high Fermi velocities were detected at the Fermi surface. Whereas three main frequencies have been observed, the angular dependence of two Fermi surface sheets indicates possible two-dimensional (2D) character despite the absence of the 2D structural features such as van der Waals bonds. Such conducting states may offer a good platform for low-dimensional polarized spin current in magnetic RAlGe (R = Ce, Pr) materials.

Experimental evidence of electron-cyclotron current drive-based neoclassical tearing mode suppression threshold reduction during mode locking on DIII-D

The repetitive locking-unlocking process of a large $m/n = 2/1$ neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) is studied on the DIII-D tokamak. Cyclical periods of partial suppression are achieved when β p and the expected bootstrap current $J_{\mathrm{BS}}$ drop upon back-transitions to L-mode. Diminished L-mode bootstrap current is required to explain decreased island size as modeled by the generalized Rutherford equation. At EC power levels too low to fully suppress the NTM, partial suppression is enough to reduce the torque on the mode to the point where viscous drag from the background plasma overcomes the electromagnetic torque and restores fast plasma rotation and H-mode. Additional current drive is shown to further reduce the size of the mode until full suppression is achieved. These results suggest that the suppression of locked modes may be aided by the lower bootstrap current in L-mode plasmas, possibly improving chances of disruption avoidance in ITER.
