A Hierarchical Volt-var Optimization with Discrete Variables in Unbalanced Distribution Systems

This paper proposes a framework to determine the optimal active and reactive power dispatch of distributed photovoltaic (PV) generation, switched capacitors, and voltage regulators in multi-phase unbalanced distribution systems. The objectives of the optimal dispatch are minimization of the energy loss, PV real power curtailment, and switching operations of capacitors and voltage regulators, in addition to elimination of voltage violation and reverse power flow. The optimization problem is formulated in rectangular coordinates as a nonlinear, nonconvex problem with discrete variables. A hierarchical twostage framework is proposed to effectively handle those discrete variables and reduce the computational time compared to the unified approach in which all variables are solved simultaneously. The efficacy of the proposed approach and the accuracy of the obtained numerical solution is validated using the unbalanced multi-phase IEEE 34-bus with 15-minute load and PV data.

Distributed Load Shedding Application Architecture and Bi-Level Predictive Estimator Algorithm

Increasing penetrations of distributed renewables are decreasing the effectiveness of traditional decentralized under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) schemes. As more distribution circuits begin to back-feed the transmission system, operation of traditional UFLS may exacerbate frequency instability. This paper presents the conceptual framework for a data-rich environment to coordinate UFLS across multiple distribution providers based on the laminar coordination framework in order to ensure optimal adaptive setting of UFLS relays. Communication and control are enabled through a distributed implementation of the IEC 61968-1 Common Information Model message bus structure. In addition to the proposed architecture, a novel adaptive UFLS scheme informed by a bi-level state estimator to create optimal relay setpoints is introduced. Initial simulation results are presented for the IEEE 14-bus test system on scenarios leading to mis-operation of traditional UFLS.

Disruption of starch biosynthesis and triacylglycerol degradation impairs growth but improves photosynthesis in Arabidopsis

Enhancing lipid accumulation by redirecting carbon from starch to triacylglycerol (TAG) in vegetative tissues is a promising strategy for developing high-energy-density crops for bioenergy production. However, our understanding of how starch and TAG metabolism interact and how this interaction affects growth and photosynthesis is incomplete. Here, we investigated the metabolic and physiological consequences of disrupting starch biosynthesis and TAG turnover in Arabidopsis thaliana by generating single, double, and triple mutants involving ADG1 (starch biosynthesis), TGD1 (lipid trafficking), and SDP1\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\n(TAG lipase). Unexpectedly, elimination of starch biosynthesis lowered TAG levels in the high-TAG-accumulating tgd1 mutant, primarily through enhanced TAG breakdown. This decline was completely reversed by sucrose supplementation, suggesting that TAG degradation was induced by carbon limitation.\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\nGenetic suppression of TAG turnover via SDP1 disruption in the starchless tgd1 adg1-1 background led to a nine-fold rise in leaf TAG accumulation in the tgd1 sdp1 adg1-1 triple mutant, together with enhanced photosynthetic performance. However, this metabolic reprogramming incurred growth penalties.\\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\nOur results highlight the role of dynamic TAG turnover in maintaining metabolic balance and photosynthesis in starch-deficient backgrounds. These findings underscore the need for refined metabolic engineering strategies that coordinate TAG biosynthesis and degradation to optimize lipid accumulation in bioenergy crops.

Coordination of Energy Storage and Distributed Generation for Voltage Control and Peak-valley Filling

The increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution network (DN) poses challenges on voltage control. In addition, the growing integration of DERs also reshapes the traditional load profile. To comprehensively address the voltage control and peak-valley filling in DN, this paper proposes a model predictive control (MPC) based optimization framework. The proposed method can achieve coordinated voltage control and peak-valley filling by adjusting the reactive power output from distributed generations (DGs) and the charging/discharging of energy storage systems (ESS). The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by simulations on a modified IEEE-123 bus system.

Deep Learning Coordinate-Free Quantum Chemistry

Computing quantum chemical properties of small molecules and polymers can provide insights valuable to physicists, chemists and biologists when designing new materials, catalysts, biological probes and drugs. Deep learning can compute quantum chemical properties accurately in a fraction of the time required by commonly used methods such as density functional theory (DFT). However, many of these deep learning architectures require energy minimized molecular geometries as input, which is also computationally expensive, and decreasing the reproducibility and throughput of these methods. In this study, we demonstrate that accurate quantum chemical computations can be performed without optimized geometries by operating in the coordinate-free domain using deep learning on graph encodings. Furthermore, we also find that the choice of graph-encoding architecture substantially affects the performance of these methods. The Wave architecture outperforms graph convolution architectures, particularly on complex molecules. Furthermore, the structures of these graph encoding architectures provide an opportunity to probe an important, outstanding question in quantum mechanics: What types of quantum chemical properties can be represented by local-variable models? We find that Wave, a local-variable model, is more accurately calculates quantum chemical properties. Graph convolutional architectures require global variables, and are not as effective as as Wave. We anticipate that coordinate-free, deep-learning models of quantum chemistry will become valuable tools in chemistry and biology, enabling researchers to rapidly screen chemical databases or identify new molecules using automated, de-novo design algorithms.

Optimal Sizing of PV and Energy Storage in an Electric Vehicle Extreme Fast Charging Station

This paper proposes an optimization model for the optimal sizing of photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage in an electric vehicle extreme fast charging station considering the coordinated charging strategy of the electric vehicles. The proposed model minimizes the annualized cost of the extreme fast charging station, including investment and maintenance cost of PV and energy storage, cost of purchasing energy from utility and demand charge. The decision variables are capacity of invested PV and the power and energy ratings of invested energy storage. To further reduce the annualized cost of the extreme fast charging station, the charging strategy of electric vehicles are integrated into the optimization model and coordinated with the power output of PV and charging/discharging of energy storage. Results of numerical simulations indicate that investment of PV and energy storage could help reduce the annualized cost of the extreme fast charging station significantly. Meanwhile, the impacts of various parameters on the optimal solution are investigated by sensitivity analysis.

Offline Arterial Signal Timing Optimization based on Virtual Phase Link Model - A Real-world Case Study

Conventional signal timing for arterial usually takes bottom-up approaches. Engineers optimize each individual intersection first and then coordinate them by adjusting the offsets. This work is based on the Virtual Phase-Link (VPL) model, a street traffic model designed for online traffic model predictive control, to obtain a top-down offline arterial signal timing. We Studied the Shallowford Rd. in Chattanooga, TN and found that the inconsistency in intersection capacities along the arterial could lead to some intersections becoming bottlenecks. Signal timing is a significant factor that affect the intersection capacities. We realized that the VPL-based model can guarantee the consistency in intersections along an arterial. We therefore adopted the VPL-based model and developed an offline signal timing optimization approach. The proposed timing derived from the VPL-based offline signal timing optimization showed very good results in simulation. The Chattanooga Department of Transportation adopted the optimized timing obtained from the proposed approach and gave positive feedbacks to the research team. We also collected field experiment data, which demonstrated overall energy reductions and speed improvements on some sections of the Shallowford Rd. arterial. We will continue the experiment when the COVID-19 pandemic impact subsides to have a more robust quantitative evaluation.

Exact reaction coordinates for flap opening in HIV-1 protease

The primary goal of protein science is to understand how proteins function, which requires understanding the functional dynamics responsible for transitions between different functional structures of a protein. A central concept is the exact reaction coordinates that can determine the value of committor for any protein configuration, which provide the optimal description of functional dynamics. Despite intensive efforts, identifying the exact reaction coordinates (RCs) in complex molecules remains a formidable challenge. Using the recently developed generalized work functional, we report the discovery of the exact RCs for an important functional process—the flap opening of HIV-1 protease. Our results show that this process has six RCs, each one is a linear combination of ~240 backbone dihedrals, providing the precise definition of collectivity and cooperativity in the functional dynamics of a protein. Applying bias potentials along each RC can accelerate flap opening by 10 3 to 10 4 folds. The success in identifying the RCs of a protein with 198 residues represents a significant progress beyond that of the alanine dipeptide, currently the only other complex molecule for which the exact RCs for its conformational changes are known. Our results suggest that the generalized work functional (GWF) might be the fundamental operator of mechanics that controls protein dynamics.

Corrosion resistant hot melt adhesive to bind metals

Hot melt adhesives (HMAs) play an important role in many industries, and their demand is expected to grow. HMAs don't require any solvents, and their application results in the formation of strong bonds with the substrate upon cooling within seconds. These properties differentiate them from liquid glues and make them preferable for practical application. Currently, commercial HMAs are used in bonding lightweight materials such as paper, polymers, and cartons, and have limited usage in areas necessitating the bonding of heavier objects like metals. Here, in this study, we report a design and testing of versatile platform comprising an ion-coordinating polymer and ionic fillers for performance optimization and understanding of structure–property relationships, enabling the rational design of HMAs with improved adhesion to metal surfaces. All-atom Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and various characterization methods are used to elucidate the adhesion mechanism in model composite system containing polyethylene oxide mixed with chemically diverse salt particles. The maximum adhesion strength is found in composites with Al(OH) 3 and FeCl 3 fillers. Interestingly, the presence of Al(OH) 3 also provides a multifunctional anticorrosion property as measured electrochemically using the Tafel method. The discovered path to formulations with improved adhesion to metal surfaces constitutes an important step toward advancing HMAs for use in the structural and semi-structural metal work domain.

Interregional Transmission Operational Coordination (IRTOC)

This report presents a modeling and evaluation framework developed through the Inter-Regional Transmission Operational Coordination (IRTOC) project to study market-to-market (M2M) congestion management across day-ahead and real-time markets. The framework extends the Sienna platform through Sienna Decomposition, a multi-stage evaluation architecture that enables flexible representation of multiple regions and systematic assessment of alternative market coordination designs. Additional modeling capabilities include reserve deliverability constraints, High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) optimization for Alternating Current (AC) congestion management, and several real-time distributed coordination algorithms. Case studies using the RTS-GMLC test system and a large-scale Eastern Interconnection model demonstrate that the framework can evaluate alternative coordination structures and quantify their economic and operational impacts. The proposed framework provides a scalable platform for analyzing inter-regional coordination strategies in large-scale electricity markets.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Enabled Physical-Model-Free Two-Timescale Voltage Control Method for Active Distribution Systems

Active distribution networks are being challenged by frequent and rapid voltage violations due to renewable energy integration. Conventional model-based voltage control methods rely on accurate parameters of the distribution networks, which are difficult to achieve in practice. This paper proposes a novel physical-model-free two-timescale voltage control framework for active distribution systems. To achieve fast control of PV inverters, the whole network is first partitioned into several subnetworks using voltage-reactive power sensitivity. Then, the scheduling of PV inverters in the multiple sub-networks is formulated as Markov games and solved by a multi-agent soft actor-critic (MASAC) algorithm, where each subnetwork is modeled as an intelligent agent. All agents are trained in a centralized manner to learn a coordinated strategy while being executed based on only local information for fast response. For the slower time-scale control, OLTCs and switched capacitors are coordinated by a single agent-based SAC algorithm using the global information with considering control behaviors of the inverters. Particularly, the two-level agents are trained concurrently with information exchange according to the reward signal calculated from the data-driven surrogate model. Comparative tests with different benchmark methods on IEEE 33-and 123-bus systems and 342-node low voltage distribution system demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively mitigate the fast voltage violations and achieve systematical coordination of different voltage regulation assets without the knowledge of accurate system model.

Distributed Rules-Based Deconfliction of ADMS Applications - Part 2: Conceptual Implementation

This work introduces a rules-based deconfliction methodology for resolving conflicting device control commands issued by advanced power applications considering a range of technical, economic, environmental, and social objectives. The methodology is designed to serve as one of multiple alternative implementations (along with application cooperation and global optimization) for the numerical component of the Deconfliction Pipeline. Development of the methodology is divided into two parts. The first document previously defined the requirements, context, and methods for decomposing the deconfliction problem using the Laminar Coordination Framework and Variable Grid Structures. The deconfliction problem was decomposed into a distributed optimization problem based on the concept of quasi-static grid segments, which form independent distributed areas for control and coordination. It was recommended that selection of the optimal number of decompositions of the deconfliction problem be made based on a tradeoff analysis between computational speed and global optimality. This second document defines an initial set of technical, economic, and environmental criteria, as well as thirty specific qualitative rules that are used as part of the deconfliction methodology to eliminate non-viable setpoint alternatives. The deconfliction optimization problem is converted into a ranking of individual discrete setpoints, which are scored by the extent to which they satisfy specific decision criteria. The ranking is determined through the concepts of deconfliction exclusivity, priority, and preference. Several multi-criteria decision-making frameworks are examined with the simple multi-attribute rating technique exploiting ranks (SMARTER) recommended as a simple implementation alternative that aligns with the steps of the rules-based deconfliction methodology.

Identification of In Situ Generated High-Spin Fe(II)-N 4 Active Sites for Acidic Oxygen Reduction Reaction via Operando 57 Fe Mössbauer Spectroscopy

Iron-nitrogen-carbon (FeNC) catalysts are considered among the most promising alternative to Pt catalysts in acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), yet the geometric and electronic structures of the true active site under reaction conditions have not been clearly elucidated. Herein, we synthesized a representative FeNC catalyst by pyrolyzing Fe 3+ absorbed on ZIF-8-derived N-doped carbon at a mild temperature under the H 2 /Ar atmosphere, where a formation mechanism of FeN 4 sites through a Zn-mediated Fe nanoparticle atomization process was proposed. The resulting FeNC-750 catalyst shows high acidic ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.838 V and a peak power density of 1 W cm -2 in proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). By using operando 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy on FeNC-750, it was revealed that the pyrrolic N-coordinated high-spin Fe 2+ N 4 sites, which are in situ generated from high-spin Fe 3+ N 4 during ORR, are identified as catalytic active states. Density functional theory calculations further verified that, compared to the pyridinic N-coordinated low-spin Fe 2+ N 4 , the pyrrolic N-coordinated high-spin Fe 2+ exhibits optimized adsorption energy for reaction intermediates, thereby lowering the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) and facilitating OH* desorption. In conclusion, this work provides both experimental and theoretical evidence of the true active site in the FeNC during acidic ORR, offering significant insights for the rational design of high-performance materials for acidic fuel cells.

Approximate Dynamic Programming With Enhanced Off-Policy Learning for Coordinating Distributed Energy Resources

Herein this paper proposes an innovative approximate dynamic programming (ADP) method for distributed energy resource coordination with the loss of life of battery energy storage system (BESS) explicitly modeled. The dispatch policy is designed to account for both calendrical and cyclical aging effects on BESS, explicitly modeling the impacts of ambient temperature on BESS lifespan. The proposed ADP employs an adaptive critic method and enhanced off-policy deterministic policy gradient (DPG) strategy, addressing the limitations of the on-policy gradient-based ADP approaches, including inadequate exploration, low data usage, and computational complexity. In particular, a customized policy is proposed to guide the algorithm to explore some promising decisions and thereby improve exploration capability and learning efficiency compared to conventional DPG-based learning approaches, which may struggle to find a global optimum due to random noisy action-based exploration or require expert demonstration with extra effort. The proposed method is illustrated using the IEEE 123-node system and compared with the existing ADP methods to prove solution accuracy and demonstrate the effects of incorporating degradation models into control design. Case studies showed that the proposed ADP effectively coordinates DERs with a 10 times smaller optimization gap compared to existing methods, and the incorporation of the BESS life loss model ensures the expected lifespan and results in significant cost savings.

Visualizing Vehicle Acceleration and Braking Energy at Intersections along a Major Traffic Corridor

Automobiles approaching a controlled intersection need to brake and come to a full stop when the signal transitions from green to red, and the vehicle must later accelerate to normal speeds after the signal changes back to green. These stops and starts associated with normal signal changes lead to unnecessary energy consumption and vehicle emissions. Previous studies have revealed that the optimization of traffic intersections' signal controls and coordination facilitates smoother traffic flows with reduced stop-and-go driving, which can significantly reduce traffic congestion and unnecessary fuel waste. This paper presents an interactive visual analytics dashboard that allows transportation planners to explore and analyze energy consumption patterns resulting from temporally varying traffic signal phases at multiple intersections along a major transportation corridor using traffic simulation outputs. The visual dashboard is implemented as an accessible and responsive web application and employs a combination of visualization techniques to cover multiple aspects of vehicle acceleration and braking at multiple adjacent intersections along a corridor. The paper presents a case study of a simulated traffic scenario on the Shallowford Road traffic corridor located in Chattanooga, Tennessee to demonstrate the capability of the visual dashboard.
