Lunar thermal measurements in conjunction with Project Apollo

Problems related to the feasibility of measuring lunar heat flow at the lunar surface are analyzed, and the findings which required that a drill be developed for lunar use are discussed. Numerical simulations were made of the in situ measurement of lunar thermal conductivity using a circular ring source of heat. The results of these simulations formed the basis for the criteria used in designing a subsurface thermal probe for ALSEP. Preliminary analyses are presented on the data obtained from the Apollo 15 and 17 missions.

Active experiments in space in conjunction with Skylab

Two papers are presented which relate to the Skylab barium shaped charge experiments. The first describes the L=6.6 OOSIK barium plasma injection experiment and magnetic storm of March 7, 1972. Rocket payload, instrumentation, data reduction methods, geophysical environment at the time of the experiment, and results are given. The second paper presents the observation of an auroral Birkeland current which developed from the distortion of a barium plasma jet during the above experiment.

Measurement of a single tendon reflex in conjunction with a myogram - The second manned Skylab mission

A generalized hyperreflexia was observed in Skylab 2 crew members immediately postflight. Duration of the Achilles reflex was significantly shortened. Further shortening was observed on the fourth day after recovery. At the 16th and 29th postrecovery days a lengthening of the reflex was observed in two of the three crew members. The muscle potential intervals were shortened immediately postflight and remained shortened throughout the 29 day postflight evaluation period.

A preliminary study of the use of intercooling and reheat in conjunction with regeneration for aircraft turbine engines

The effect on fuel consumption of turbofans with intercooled, regenerative cycles and with intercooled, regenerative, reheat cycles was studied. The technology level for both engine and aircraft was that projected for 1985. The simulated mission was a 5556 km flight carrying 200 passengers at Mach 0.8 at 11582 min. Results indicate that these relatively complex cycles offer little, if any, fuel savings potential relative to a conventional turbofan cycle of comparable advanced technology. The intercooled, regenerative cycle yields about the same fuel economy as a conventional cycle at close to the same overall pressure ratio.

High-dispersion spectroscopic observations of Venus near superior conjunction. I - The carbon dioxide band at 7820 A

Nine plates of the 7820-A CO2 band were taken in 1971. A curve-of-growth analysis of the CO2 lines indicates a rotational temperature of 241 + or - 2 K, with an average slope to the curve of growth of 0.60 + or - 0.03. The Venus phase angle ranged from 7.2 to 10.7 deg. The equivalent widths of the 1971 data fall on a smooth curve fit through the 1969 data for this band; there does not appear to be any discontinuity in the phase curve at small phase angles.

Computational aerodynamics requirements in conjunction with experimental facilities

The importance computational aerodynamics in improving quality and efficiency in production of information at a wind tunnel test center is discussed. Some principal applications of the calculations are to extend or clarify the understanding of experimental data, particularly when wind tunnel or scaling limitations prevent attainment of all conditions of interest, and to furnish on-line or near-on-line math-model results or other comparative data needed for test direction.

Elastohydrodynamic lubrication of elliptical contacts for materials of low elastic modulus. 2: Starved conjunction

Lubricant starvation effects on minimum film thickness for low-elastic modulus materials are studied by moving the inlet boundary closer to the contact center. Contour plots of the pressure and film thickness in and around the contact were obtained for fully flooded and starved lubrication conditions. These contour plots show that the inlet pressure contours become less circular and that the film thickness decreases substantially as the severity of starvation increases.

A solar wind turbulence event during the Voyager 1978 solar conjunction profiled via new DSN radio science

A radio science data capability within the DSN Tracking System is described. This capability consists of routine provision of phase fluctuation data concurrently computed over several different time scales. This capability was used to observe phase fluctuation spectral characteristics during a rapid increase in solar wind turbulence that occurred during a July 23, 1978 track of the Voyager 1 spacecraft by Deep Space Station 11. It is suggested that the capability will prove useful in studies of variations of solar wind phase fluctuation spectral characteristics with, for instance, parameters such as the solar cycle and radial distance.

The use of adaptive grids in conjunction with shock capturing methods

The use of shock capturing finite-difference techniques in computing flow fields containing shocks results in a smeared or oscillatory solution in the vicinity of the shocks. This smearing or oscillatory behavior is due to the discretized form of the governing differential equations used to compute the solution. The discretization error can be reduced by a proper clustering of mesh points in the region of the shock and by using shock aligned grids. This paper uses a simple method that was developed earlier to cluster points near the shocks and serves to introduce a new method of generating a shock aligned mesh. Applications to the one-dimensional inviscid Burgers' equation, supersonic flow over a wedge with the associated straight oblique shock, one- and two-dimensional inviscid flows through an expanding duct and the problem of a straight oblique shock in a uniform supersonic freestream are presented. Significant reduction in the oscillatory behavior of the solution is demonstrated.
