The Einstein Observatory Medium Sensitivity Survey - Optical identifications for a complete sample of X-ray sources

It is suggested that virtually all the X-ray sources in the Einstein Observatory's Medium Sensitivity Survey flux range can be identified with objects visible on the POSS, on the basis of the complete identification of all sources north of -25 deg declination. There is no evidence for a significant population of 'blank field' X-ray sources at this flux level, and therefore no evidence for any new X-ray source class with very high L(x)/L(v). Most of the quasars detected in the present survey are spectroscopically similar to optical or radio-selected quasars. About 25 percent of the quasar sample, however, had reddish colors, and permitted lines dominated by a narrow-line component. These objects form a second sequence of active galactic nuclei, distinct in their optical properties from the broad line objects.

Spectrophotometry of two complete samples of flat radio spectrum quasars

Spectrophotometry of two complete samples of flat-spectrum radio quasars show that for these objects there is a strong correlation between the equivalent width of the C IV 1550 A emission line and the luminosity of the underlying continuum. Assuming Friedmann cosmologies, the scatter in this correlation is a minimum for Q(O) approximately unity. Alternatively, luminosity evolution can be invoked to give compact distributions for Q(O) approximately zero models. A sample of Seyfert galaxies observed with IUE shows that despite some dispersion the average equivalent width of C IV 1550 A in Seyfert galaxies is independent of the underlying continuum luminosity. New redshifts are given for four quasars.

An X-ray survey of a complete sample of 3CR radio galaxies

The X-ray survey of the galaxies, 40 in all, was made with the Einstein Observatory. By comparing the distributions of X-ray luminosities, it is found that 3CR galaxies with double radio morphology (FR 2) and optical emission-line spectra tend to be the more powerful X-ray emitters, with broad-line galaxies at the top of the distribution. It is also found that the X-ray luminosity is strongly correlated with the 5 GHz radio nuclear luminosity. Through an analysis of the complete optical and radio sample with the Spearman partial rank correlation technique, it is determined that nuclear radio luminosity at 5 GHz is correlated with both total radio luminosity at 178 MHz and with galaxy optical luminosity. Other weaker correlations are found of the X-ray luminosity with the total radio luminosity at 178 MHz and the optical luminosity of the galaxy. The results are seen as underlining the importance of nuclear phenomena in radio galaxies and indicating a nuclear origin of their X-ray emission. In addition, it is found that the 3CR emission-line galaxies are similar to both Seyfert galaxies and quasars with double radio morphology in their X-ray properties, strongly reinforcing a unified picture of active nuclei.

Calculation of the spontaneous cyclotron emissivity using the complete relativistic resonance condition

An expression for the spectral emissivity of spontaneous synchrotron radiation for a plasma which consists of both thermal and suprathermal electron components is derived using the complete relativistic cyclotron resonance condition. The expression is valid over all angles of propagation. The result is applied to the study of the emission of radiation from an energetic population of electrons with a loss-cone distribution in a relatively low-density plasma (i.e., the electron plasma frequency is less than the cyclotron frequency).

Completely monotone regression estimates of software failure rates

A method for estimating the present failure rate of a program is presented. A crude nonparameter estimate of the failure rate function is obtained from past failure times. This estimate is then smoothed by fitting a completely monotonic function, which is the solution of a quadratic programming problem. The value of the smoothed function at present time is used as the estimate of present failure rate. Results of a Monte Carlo study of performance are given.

A search at the millijansky level for milli-arcsecond cores in a complete sample of radio galaxies

A complete sample of 26 extended radio galaxies was observed at 2.29 GHz with the Mark III VLBI system. The fringe spacing was about 3 milli-arcsec, and the detection limit was about 2 millijanskys. Half of the galaxies were found to possess milli-arcsec radio cores. In all but three sources, the nuclear flux density was less than 0.04 of the total flux density. Galaxies with high optical luminosity (less than -21.2) were more likely than less luminous galaxies to contain a detectable milliparcsec radio core (69 percent vs. 20 percent). For objects with arcsec cores, 80 percent were found to have a milli-arcsec core, even though the milli-arcsec object did not always contribute the greater part of the arcsec flux density.

On the completeness of the Medium Sensitivity Survey quasar sample

The Medium Sensitivity Survey (MSS) quasar sample is being used more and more to study quasar properties in general and to analyze the relationship between X-ray-selected and optically selected quasars in particular. These studies have recently shown that current knowledge of the properties of optically selected quasars (luminosity function, evolution, X-ray to optical luminosity ratio) leads to the prediction that many more X-ray-selected quasars should have been detected than are actually observed. Prompted by this fact, a detailed examination of possible causes of incompleteness of the MSS quasar sample has been undertaken, paying particular attention to the problem of photoelectric absorption due to the interstellar medium within the Galaxy. It is found that there is no evidence of a loss of sources due to the effects considered, and that the MSS quasar sample is statistically complete.

Unsteady low-speed aerodynamic model for complete aircraft configurations

A method for converting steady state, potential panel methods into a time-dependent mode is derived and applied to several test cases. For this development, an improved vortex wake model was constructed which was also suitable for simulating the leading edge separation of slender wings at high angles of attack. Computed flow-field simulations are presented for various unsteady, and high-angle-of-attack conditions, involving geometries such as simple wings, rotors, and complete aircraft configurations.

Numerical simulation of the flow field around a complete aircraft

The present effort represents a first attempt of numerical simulation of the flow field around a complete aircraft-like, lifting configuration utilizing the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The numerical solution generated for the experimental aircraft concept X24C-10D at a Mach number of 5.95 not only exhibited accurate prediction of detailed flow properties but also of the integrated aerodynamic coefficients. In addition, the present analysis demonstrated that a page structure of data collected into cyclic blocks is an efficient and viable means for processing the Navier-Stokes equations on the CRAY XMP-22 computer with external memory device.

A complete sample of flat-spectrum radio sources from the Parkes 2.7 GHz survey

A complete sample of about 400 flat-spectrum radio sources from the Parkes 2700 MHz catalog with fluxes of greater than 0.5 is presented. The present sample covers all right ascensions and declinations from +10 deg to -45 deg, but excludes the galactic plane. No significant difference is found in the number-magnitude or number-redshift distributions for the flat spectrum and steep-spectrum radio quasars, in agreement with previous results for stronger sources.

The numerical simulation of transonic separated flow about the complete F-16A

The thin-layer, Reynolds-averaged, Navier-Stokes equations are used to simulate the transonic viscous flow about the complete F-16A fighter aircraft. These computations demonstrate how computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can be used to simulate turbulent viscous flow about realistic aircraft geometries. A zonal grid approach is used to provide adequate viscous grid clustering on all aircraft surfaces. Zonal grids extend inside the F-16A inlet and up to the compressor face while power on conditions are modeled by employing a zonal grid extending from the exhaust nozzle to the far field. A simple solution adaptive grid procedure is used on the wing surface and good agreement with experimental data is obtained. Computations for the F-16A in side slip are also presented.

The complete visual light curve of SN 1987A: Thirteen months of FES observations

Visual brightness measurements of SN 1987A are being obtained with the IUE acquisition camera and star tracker Fine Error Sensor, (FES) as part of each ultraviolet observation. Due to IUE's around-the-clock operation and lack of clouds, the FES record of SN 1987A provides the most complete set of visual photometry of the supernova made by any single instrument. The data illustrate the photometric limitations of the FES (+ or - 0.03 mag). Use of differential photometric methods are recommended for IUE observers desiring accurate photometry from FES measurements made during their observing shifts.

Complete positive ion, electron, and ram negative ion measurements near Comet Halley (COPERNIC) plasma experiment for the European Giotto Mission

Participation of U.S. scientists on the COPERNIC (COmplete Positive ions, Electrons and Ram Negative Ion measurements near Comet Halley) plasma experiment on the Giotto mission is described. The experiment consisted of two detectors: the EESA (electron electrostatic analyzer) which provided three-dimensional measurements of the distribution of electrons from 10 eV to 30 keV, and the PICCA (positive ion cluster composition analyzer) which provided mass analysis of positively charged cold cometary ions from mass 10 to 210 amu. In addition, a small 3 deg wide sector of the EESA looking in the ram direction was devoted to the detection of negatively charged cold cometary ions. Both detectors operated perfectly up to near closest approach (approx. 600 km) to Halley, but impacts of dust particles and neutral gas on the spacecraft contaminated parts of the data during the last few minutes. Although no flight hardware was fabricated in the U.S., The U.S. made very significant contributions to the hardware design, ground support equipment (GSE) design and fabrication, and flight and data reduction software required for the experiment, and also participated fully in the data reduction and analysis, and theoretical modeling and interpretation. Cometary data analysis is presented.

Ultrasonic attenuation measurements determine onset, degree, and completion of recrystallization

Ultrasonic attenuation was measured for cold worked Nickel 200 samples annealed at increasing temperatures. Localized dislocation density variations, crystalline order and volume percent of recrystallized phase were determined over the anneal temperature range using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and metallurgy. The exponent of the frequency dependence of the attenuation was found to be a key variable relating ultrasonic attenuation to the thermal kinetics of the recrystallization process. Identification of this key variable allows for the ultrasonic determination of onset, degree, and completion of recrystallization.

Eigensolution of finite element problems in a completely connected parallel architecture

A parallel algorithm is presented for the solution of the generalized eigenproblem in linear elastic finite element analysis. The algorithm is based on a completely connected parallel architecture in which each processor is allowed to communicate with all other processors. The algorithm is successfully implemented on a tightly coupled MIMD parallel processor. A finite element model is divided into m domains each of which is assumed to process n elements. Each domain is then assigned to a processor or to a logical processor (task) if the number of domains exceeds the number of physical processors. The effect of the number of domains, the number of degrees-of-freedom located along the global fronts, and the dimension of the subspace on the performance of the algorithm is investigated. For a 64-element rectangular plate, speed-ups of 1.86, 3.13, 3.18, and 3.61 are achieved on two, four, six, and eight processors, respectively.

Emission-line properties of optically and radio-selected complete quasar samples

Spectrophotometry of two complete samples of quasars, one obtained from the flat radio spectra of the objects and the other from their optical colors, is presented. It is confirmed that the equivalent widths of the major UV emission lines decrease with increasing continuum luminosity (the Baldwin effect) and that the (Ly-alpha + N V)/C IV and 1909 A/C IV intensity ratios are also luminosity-dependent by virtue of the C IV luminosity dependence. It is shown that the Mg II/C IV intensity ratio and possibly the strengths of the blue Fe II emission features and the FWHM of the 1909 A blend are luminosity-dependent. These results generally support the Mushotzky and Ferland (1984) interpretation of the Baldwin effect in terms of a weak inverse correlation between the continuum luminosity and ionization parameter.

Finite element computation of hypersonic flow past a complete body

The finite element method was applied to compressible flows past complete blunt bodies in a first attempt to use the method to model hypersonic flow past re-entry vehicles. A Runge-Kutta time marching scheme was utilized and was found to adequately handle the bow shock and downstream wake. Adaptive refinement was successively applied to the flow field grid, and improvement in solution accuracy was observed. The results reported in this paper include the flow past a circular cylinder at Mach 3, and the flow in the plane of symmetry for the flow past a sphere at Mach 10.
