SeaWiFS Technical Report Series: Case Studies for SeaWiFS Calibration and Validation - Volume 41

This document provides brief reports, or case studies, on a number of investigations sponsored by the Calibration and Validation Team (CVT) within the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) Project. Chapter I describes the calibration and characterization of the GSFC sphere, which was used in the recent recalibration of the SeaWiFS instrument. Chapter 2 presents a revision of the diffuse attenuation coefficient, K(490), algorithm based on the SeaWiFS wavelengths. Chapter 3 provides an implementation scheme for an algorithm to remove out-of-band radiance when using a sensor calibration based on a finite width (truncated) spectral response function, e.g., between the 1% transmission points. Chapter 4 describes the implementation schemes for the stray light quality flag (local area coverage [LAC] and global area coverage [GAC]) and the LAC stray light correction.

Aircraft measurements of electrified clouds at Kennedy Space Center. Part 2: Case study: 4 November 1988 (88309)

During the fall of 1988, a Schweizer airplane equipped to measure electric field and other meteorological parameters flew over Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in a program to study clouds defined in the existing launch restriction criteria. A case study is presented of a single flight over KSC on November 4, 1988. This flight was chosen for two reasons: (1) the clouds were weakly electrified, and no lightning was reported during the flight; and (2) electric field mills in the surface array at KSC indicated field strengths greater than 3 kV/m, yet the aircraft flying directly over them at an altitude of 3.4 km above sea level measured field strengths of less than 1.6 kV/m. A weather summary, sounding description, record of cloud types, and an account of electric field measurements are included.

West Africa Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Capacity Building - Discussion of BESS Tariffs: Payment Structures and Case Studies [Slides]

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are emerging as critical assets for enhancing grid reliability, integrating renewable energy, and enabling system flexibility. Yet, the regulatory and financial frameworks that determine how BESS projects are compensated vary widely across jurisdictions. This presentation explores international case studies - from Honduras, Costa Rica, Chile, South Africa, Mexico, and Brazil - to illustrate how tariff design and payment structures are evolving to support large-scale BESS deployment. The cases highlight a range of ownership and revenue models, including cost-of-service mechanisms, energy and capacity payments, and market-based arbitrage, as well as hybrid approaches under development. The discussion will examine key challenges such as defining remuneration for ancillary services, addressing double charging, and accounting for efficiency losses and degradation over time. By comparing experiences across markets, the presentation identifies emerging best practices for valuing BESS and designing tariffs that align technical performance with economic incentives, providing insights for regulators, utilities, and policymakers pursuing storage integration.

A case study of transient event motion in the magnetosphere and in the ionosphere

We present a case study of the magnetospheric and ionospheric response to a series of repetitive (7-8 min) solar wind dynamic pressure and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) strength variations generated at the bow shock. During a period of duskward and antisunward IMF orientation, the magnetospheric and ionospheric observations indicate transient events moving dawnward and duskward away from a point of origin at or after local noon. In contrast, during a subsequent period of dawnward and antisunward IMF orientation, the observations indicate events moving duskward away from a point of origin at or prior to 0900 LT. We consider explanations in terms of pressure pulse driven riplets on the magnetopause or directly driven bursts of antiparallel merging.

Development and Execution of End-of-Mission Operations Case Study of the UARS and ERBS End-of-Mission Plans

This Paper is a case study of the development and execution of the End-of-Mission plans for the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite (ERBS) and the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). The goals of the End-of-Mission Plans are to minimize the time the spacecraft remains on orbit and to minimize the risk of creating orbital debris. Both of these Missions predate the NASA Management Instructions (NMI) that directs missions to provide for safe mission termination. Each spacecrafts had their own unique challenges, which required assessing End-of-Mission requirements versus spacecraft limitations. Ultimately the End-of- Mission operations were about risk mitigation. This paper will describe the operational challenges and the lessons learned executing these End-of-Mission Plans

The 27-28 October 1986 FIRE IFO cirrus case study - Spectral properties of cirrus clouds in the 8-12 micron window

Lidar and radiometric observations are employed for detecting the presence of cirrus and describing their radiative properties. The study focuses on observations of the radiative properties of cirrus clouds within the 8-12 micron spectral region. The instrumentation that achieved the spectral radiance observations used in this study is described. Results are presented for October 28, 1986 FIRE case study day in terms of brightness temperature differences, cirrus effective emissivities, and the gross microphysical characteristics of the observed clouds. The HIS and lidar observations were combined to derive the spectral effective beam emissivity of the cirrus clouds. Fifty percent of clouds on this day displayed a spectral variation of effective beam emissivity from 2-10 percent. These differences, in conjunction with large differences in the HIS observed brightness temperatures, indicate that cirrus clouds cannot be considered gray in the 8-12 micron region. Also, the derived spectral transmittance of the cloud is used to infer the effective radii of the particle size distribution.

Case studies of clear air turbulence using the diagnostic Richardson Number Tendency formulation

The results of four case studies of clear air turbulence (CAT) using the diagnostic Richardson number tendency (DRT) formulation are highlighted. The performance of this technique in resolving regions of documented CAT encounters is encouraging. Its operational adaptability appears particularly attractive in that input data can be supplied by the currently operational rawinsonde system. Two CAT indices are calculated deterministically, sensing synoptic scale changes in static stability and vertical wind shear conductive for supporting mesoscale CAT layers. These two indices reveal volumes of the troposphere which act as source regions for patches of CAT. The first, the time to reach the critical Richardson number necessary for the initiation of turbulent conditions, was first used by Oard (1974). A second index is devised which is an adaptation of Roach's (1970) work relating synoptic scale and mesoscale energetical coupling and gives more information on the relative intensity of these source regions. The output from the DRT computer module highlights specific regions of the atmosphere which can be interpreted operationally in terms of a CAT encounter probability.

White Paper on Case Study of Safe Installation of Second-Life Energy Storage System

This technical report provides for a case study for the safe installation of a second-life, or repurposed, battery, that has been reconfigured for use as a stationary energy storage systems (ESS). Driven by legislative requirements such as California Senate Bill 615 and projections that retired EV batteries could meet a substantial portion of U.S. grid ESS needs beginning in 2035, the repurposing of EV batteries is anticipated to grow significantly. However, safety concerns arise from the effects of aging, unknown prior usage history, and changes in thermal runaway behavior, which may increase failure risks compared to new batteries. NFPA 855, the predominant U.S. standard for ESS installation, mandates that second-life batteries meet all requirements for new batteries, with repurposers complying with UL 1974 in addition to obtaining UL 9540 and UL 1973 listings. These are certifications that few repurposers have achieved and represent a regulatory barrier to entry for the market as a whole.

Case Study of Using Flocad to Model a Ground Test Station Ln2 Heat Exchanger

This paper presents a case study of using FLOCAD to model the heat transfer and boiling flow behavior of a Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) ground station equipment heat exchanger. The unique aspect of this work is that is one of very few studies documenting the use of FLOCAD in the spacecraft thermal control community. The results of the simulations described herein were used to guide and plan the execution of thermal vacuum testing spacecraft hardware using a ground test heat exchanger such as the one modeled herein. The paper will review the theory of two-phase boiling flow and correlations used by SINDA/FLUINT as well as the terminology and nomenclature used within Thermal Desktop / FLOCAD regarding two-phase boiling flow heat transfer modeling and simulation. Results for using the ground station heat exchanger as a heat sink in a thermal vacuum test set up are shown in order to demonstrate the set-up and execution of a typical FLOCAD model. Results indicate that properly modeling of the two-phase behavior is critical in order to ascertain the time constant associated with the heat exchanger, as well as understanding the temperature distribution across the test equipment and prediction of required LN2 flowrates to be used during testing. The paper is meant to augment the FLOCAD user’s manual and serve as a tutorial for thermal engineers and analysts wishing to learn and apply FLOCAD to industrial problems.

Influences of δB contribution and parallel inertial term of energetic particles on MHD-kinetic hybrid simulations: a case study of the 1/1 internal kink mode

The magnetohydrodynamic-kinetic (MHD-kinetic) hybrid model (Park et al 1992 Phys. Fluids B 4 2033–7) has been widely applied in studying energetic particles (EPs) problems in fusion plasmas for past decades. The pressure-coupling scheme or the current-coupling scheme is adopted in this model. However, two noteworthy issues arise in the model application: firstly, the coupled term introduced in the pressure-coupling scheme, (∇•P h ) ⟂ , is often simplified by ∇•P h , which is equivalent to neglecting the parallel inertial term of EPs; secondly, besides the $δf$ contribution caused by changing in the EP distribution function, the magnetic field perturbation (the $δB$ contribution) generated during development of the instabilities should also be considered, but it is often ignored in existing hybrid simulations. In this paper, we derive the analytical formulations under these two coupling schemes and then numerically study the representative case of the linear stability of the $m/n$ = $1/1$ internal kink mode (IKM) (Fu et al 2006 Phys. Plasmas 13 052517) by using the CLT-K code. Further, it is found that the approximated models can still yield reasonable results when EPs are isotopically distributed. But it fails completely in cases with anisotropic EP distributions. In addition, we further investigate the influence of EP's orbit width on the stability of IKM and verify the equivalence between pressure-coupling scheme and the current-coupling scheme.

A case study of the influences of audience and purpose on the composing processes of an engineer

The design and preliminary findings of a study of composing processes (on the job) of engineers, managers, and scientists is presented. The influences of audience and purpose on the composing process of engineers was of concern; specifically, the cognitive processes, physical behaviors, and factors that influence the evoluton of a piece of writing. An overview of the study, related literature, outlines of research design, and preliminary findings from a case study of engineers are given. It is suggested that teaching be adapted to help students learn to represent rhetorical problems to guide composing for effective writing.
