Study of η → π + π − l + l −

Using a sample of ( 10087 ± 44 ) × 10 6 J / ψ events accumulated with the BESIII detector, we analyze the decays η → π + π − l + l − ( l = e or μ ) via the process J / ψ → γ η . The branching fraction of η → π + π − e + e − is measured to be B ( η → π + π − e + e − ) = ( 3.07 ± 0.1 2 stat ± 0.1 9 syst ) × 10 − 4 . No signal events are observed for the η → π + π − μ + μ − decay, leading to an upper limit on the branching fraction of B ( η → π + π − μ + μ − ) < 4.0 × 10 − 7 at the 90% confidence level. Furthermore, the C P -violation asymmetry parameter is found to be A C P ( η → π + π − e + e − ) = ( − 4.04 ± 4.6 9 stat ± 0.1 4 syst ) % , showing no evidence of C P -violation with current statistics. Additionally, we extract the transition form factor from the decay amplitude of η → π + π − e + e − . Finally, axionlike particles are searched for via the decay η → π + π − a , a → e + e − , and upper limits on this branching fraction relative to that of η → π + π − e + e − are presented as a function of the axionlike particle mass in the range 5 – 200 MeV / c 2 . In addition, first evidence is found for the modes h c → 2 ( π + π − ) π 0 η and h c → 2 ( π + π − ) ω with significances of 4.8 σ and 4.7 σ , and their branching fractions are determined to be ( 7.55 ± 1.51 ± 0.77 ) × 10 − 3 and ( 4.00 ± 0.86 ± 0.35 ) × 10 − 3 , respectively. No significant signals of h c → 2 ( π + π − ) η and h c → p p ¯ are observed, and the upper limits of the branching fractions of these decays are determined to be < 6.19 × 10 − 4 and < 4.40 × 10 − 5 at the 90% confidence level, respectively. Search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson to a pair of pseudoscalars in the $μμ bb$ and $ττ bb$ final states

A search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson (H) with a mass of 125 GeV to a pair of light pseudoscalars a 1 is performed in final states where one pseudoscalar decays to two quarks and the other to a pair of muons or leptons. A data sample of proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 recorded with the CMS detector is analyzed. No statistically significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level (CL) on the Higgs boson branching fraction to μ μ b b and to τ τ b b via a pair of a 1 s. The limits depend on the pseudoscalar mass m a 1 and are observed to be in the range (0.17–3.3) x 10 -4 and (1.7–7.7) x 10 -2 in the μ μ b b and τ τ b b final states, respectively. In the framework of models with two Higgs doublets and a complex scalar singlet (2HDM+S), the results of the two final states are combined to determine upper limits on the branching fraction ${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} \rightarrow \ell \ell \text{ b } \text{ b})$ at 95% CL, with ℓ being a muon or a τ lepton. For different types of 2HDM+S, upper bounds on the branching fraction ${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} )$ are extracted from the combination of the two channels. In most of the Type II 2HDM+S parameter space ${\mathcal {B}}(\text {H} \rightarrow \text {a}_{1} \text {a}_{1} )$, values above 0.23 are excluded at 95% CL for m a 1 values between 15 and 60 GeV.

Radical–Radical Reactions in Molecular Weight Growth: The Phenyl + Propargyl Reaction

The mechanism for hydrocarbon ring growth in sooting environments is still the subject of considerable debate. The reaction of phenyl radical (C 6 H 5 ) with propargyl radical (H 2 CCCH) provides an important prototype for radical–radical ring-growth pathways. We studied this reaction experimentally over the temperature range of 300–1000 K and pressure range of 4–10 Torr using time-resolved multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry. We detect both the C 9 H 8 and C 9 H 7 + H product channels and report experimental isomer-resolved product branching fractions for the C 9 H 8 product. We compare these experiments to theoretical kinetics predictions from a recently published study augmented by new calculations. Here, these ab initio transition state theory-based master equation calculations employ high-quality potential energy surfaces, conventional transition state theory for the tight transition states, and direct CASPT2-based variable reaction coordinate transition state theory (VRC-TST) for the barrierless channels. At 300 K only the direct adducts from radical–radical addition are observed, with good agreement between experimental and theoretical branching fractions, supporting the VRC-TST calculations of the barrierless entrance channel. As the temperature is increased to 1000 K we observe two additional isomers, including indene, a two-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, and a small amount of bimolecular products C 9 H 7 + H. Our calculated branching fractions for the phenyl + propargyl reaction predict significantly less indene than observed experimentally. We present further calculations and experimental evidence that the most likely cause of this discrepancy is the contribution of H atom reactions, both H + indenyl (C 9 H 7 ) recombination to indene and H-assisted isomerization that converts less stable C 9 H 8 isomers into indene. Especially at low pressures typical of laboratory investigations, H-atom-assisted isomerization needs to be considered. Regardless, the experimental observation of indene demonstrates that the title reaction leads, either directly or indirectly, to the formation of the second ring in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Test of lepton flavor universality and search for lepton flavor violation in B → Kℓℓ decays

We present measurements of the branching fractions for the decays B → Kμ + μ - and B → Ke + e - , and their ratio (R K ), using a data sample of 711 fb -1 that contains 772 × 10 6 B$\bar{B}$ events. The data were collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e - collider. The ratio R K is measured in five bins of dilepton invariant-mass-squared (q 2 ): q 2 $\epsilon$ (0.1, 4.0), (4.00, 8.12), (1.0, 6.0), (10.2, 12.8) and (> 14.18) GeV 2 /c 4 , along with the whole q 2 region. The R K value for q 2 $\epsilon$ (1.0, 6.0) GeV 2 /c 4 is 1.03$^{+0.28}_{-0.24}$ ± 0.01. The first and second uncertainties listed are statistical and systematic, respectively. All results for RK are consistent with Standard Model predictions. We also measure CP-averaged isospin asymmetries in the same q 2 bins. The results are consistent with a null asymmetry, with the largest difference of 2.6 standard deviations occurring for the q 2 $\epsilon$ (1.0, 6.0) GeV 2 /c 4 bin in the mode with muon final states. The measured differential branching fractions, dB/dq 2 , are consistent with theoretical predictions for charged B decays, while the corresponding values are below the expectations for neutral B decays. We have also searched for lepton-flavor-violating B → Kμ ± e ∓ decays and set 90% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fraction in the range of 10 -8 for B + → K + μ ± e ∓ , and B 0 → K 0 μ ± e ∓ modes.

Abstract By analyzinge + e − annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb −1 collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, the first observation of the semileptonic decays$$ {D}^0\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^0{e}^{+}{\nu}_e $$ D 0 → K S 0 π − π 0 e + ν e and$$ {D}^{+}\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}{e}^{+}{\nu}_e $$ D + → K S 0 π + π − e + ν e is reported. When combined with measurements of theK 1 (1270)→ K + π − πdecays, the absolute branching fractions are determined to be$$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^0\to {K}_1{(1270)}^{-}{e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left({1.08}_{-0.13-0.10}^{+0.14+0.08}\pm 0.21\right)\times {10}^{-3} $$ B D 0 → K 1 1270 − e + ν e = 1.08 − 0.13 − 0.10 + 0.14 + 0.08 ± 0.21 × 10 − 3 and$$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^{+}\to {\overline{K}}_1{(1270)}^0{e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left({1.70}_{-0.23}^{+0.26}\pm 0.13\pm 0.35\right)\times {10}^{-3} $$ B D + → K ¯ 1 1270 0 e + ν e = 1.70 − 0.23 + 0.26 ± 0.13 ± 0.35 × 10 − 3 . Angular analysis of the low K + K – invariant mass enhancement in B + →K + K – π + decays

We study the decay B + →K + K – π + and investigate the angular distribution of K + K – pairs with invariant mass below 1.1 GeV / c 2 . This region exhibits both a strong enhancement in signal and very large direct CP violation. We construct a coherent sum model for the angular distribution of the S- and P-wave, and report the ratio of their amplitudes, the relative phase and the forward-backward asymmetry. We also report absolute differential branching fractions and direct CP asymmetry for the decay in bins of M K+K– and the differential branching fractions in bins of M K+π– . The results are based on a data sample that contains 772 × 10 6 $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ$(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e – collider. The result favors the presence of S- and D-waves in low M K+K– region to the detriment of a P-wave.

Search for a new scalar resonance in flavour-changing neutral-current top-quark decays $t → qX (q = u, c)$, with $X → b\overline{b} $, in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for flavour-changing neutral-current decays of a top quark into an up-type quark (either up or charm) and a light scalar particle X decaying into a bottom anti-bottom quark pair is presented. The search focuses on top-quark pair production where one top quark decays to qX, with X → $b\bar{b}$, and the other top quark decays according to the Standard Model, with the W boson decaying leptonically. The final state is thus characterised by an isolated electron or muon and at least four jets. Events are categorised according to the multiplicity of jets and jets tagged as originating from b-quarks, and a neural network is used to discriminate between signal and background processes. The data analysed correspond to 139 fb –1 of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The 95% confidence-level upper limits between 0.019% and 0.062% are derived for the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}$(t → uX) and between 0.018% and 0.078% for the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}$(t → cX), for masses of the scalar particle X between 20 and 160 GeV.

Pressure and Temperature Dependence of the Reaction of Vinyl Radical with Ethylene

This work reports measurements of absolute rate coefficients and Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) master equation simulations of the C2H3 + C2H4 reaction. Direct kinetic studies were performed over a temperature range of 300-700 K and pressures of 20 and 133 mbar. Vinyl radicals (H2C=CH) were generated by laser photolysis of vinyl iodide (C2H31) at 266 nm, and time-resolved absorption spectroscopy was used to probe vinyl radicals through absorption at 423.2 nm. Measurements at 20 mbar are in good agreement with previous determinations at higher temperature. A weighted three-parameter Arrhenius fit to the experimental rate constant at 133 mbar, with the temperature exponent fixed, gives k = (7 +/- 1) x 10(exp -l4) cu cm/molecule/s (T/298 K)(exp 2) exp[-(1430 +/- 70) K/T]. RRKM master equation simulations, based on G3 calculations of stationary points on the C4H7 potential energy surface, were carried out to predict rate coefficients and product branching fractions. The predicted branching to 1-methylallyl product is relatively small under the conditions of the present experiments but increases as the pressure is lowered. Analysis of end products of 248 nm photolysis of vinyl iodide/ethylene mixtures at total pressures between 27 and 933 mbar provides no direct evidence for participation of I -methylallyl.

Search for the dark photon in B 0 → A'A', A' → e + e – , μ + μ – , and π + π – decays at Belle

We present a search for the dark photon A' in the B 0 → A'A' decays, where A' subsequently decays to e + e – , μ + μ – , and π + π – . The search is performed by analyzing 772 × 10 6 $B$$\overline{B}$ events collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e + e – energy-asymmetric collider at the Υ(4S) resonance. No signal is found in the dark photon mass range 0.01 GeV/c 2 ≤ m A' ≤ 2.62 GeV/c 2 , and we set upper limits of the branching fraction of B0 → A'A' at the 90% confidence level. The products of branching fractions, B(B 0 →A'A')×B(A'→e + e – ) 2 and B(B 0 →A'A')×B(A'→μ + μ – ) 2 , have limits of the order of 10 –8 depending on the A' mass. Furthermore, considering A' decay rate to each pair of charged particles, the upper limits of B(B 0 →A'A') are of the order of 10 –8 –10 –5 . From the upper limits of B(B 0 →A'A'), we obtain the Higgs portal coupling for each assumed dark photon and dark Higgs mass. The Higgs portal couplings are of the order of 10 –2 –10 –1 at m h' ≃m B 0 ± 40 MeV/c 2 and 10 –1 –1 at m h' ≃m B 0 ± 3 GeV/c 2 .
