Wheat classification exercise, using 11 June 1973, ERTS MSS data for Fayette County, Illinois (for CITARS task)

The prime emphasis was on classification of pixels in field centers, away from boundary effects. Results were encouraging in both training and test field centers for wheat and other major types of vegetation present. However, the location of fields was found to be a serious problem and it was even more difficult to select field-center pixels for fields of sizes less than 20 acres (or even larger, depending upon field shape) for use in the field-center analysis. The majority of fields in the segment are less than 20 acres in size. ERTS-1 data were received on 12 September 1973. Ground truth information and aerial photography were received on 9 and 15 September. The data were analyzed and processed digitally using the ERIM multispectral software system.

Finite elements and fluid dynamics

Difficulties concerning a use of the finite element method in the solution of the nonlinear equations of fluid dynamics are partly related to various 'hidden' instabilities which often arise in fluid calculations. The instabilities are typically due to boundary effects or nonlinearities. It is shown that in certain cases these instabilities can be avoided if certain conservation laws are satisfied, and that the latter are often intimately related to finite elements.

Antenna radiation patterns in the whistler wave regime measured in a large laboratory plasma

Antenna radiation patterns of balanced electric dipoles and shielded magnetic loop antennas are obtained by measuring the relative wave amplitude with a small receiver antenna scanned around the exciter in a large uniform collisionless magnetized laboratory plasma in the whistler wave regime. The boundary effects are assumed to be negligible even for many farfield patterns. Characteristic differences are observed between electrically short and long antennas, the former exhibiting resonance cones and the latter showing dipole-like antenna patterns along the magnetic field. Resonance cones due to small electric dipoles and magnetic loops are observed in both the near zone and the far zone. A self-focusing process is revealed which produces a pencil-shaped field-aligned radiation pattern.

Langley's two-dimensional research facilities: Capabilities and plans

The current capabilities and the forthcoming plans for Langley's two-dimensional research facilities are described. The characteristics of the Langley facilities are discussed in terms of Reynolds number, Mach number, and angle-of-attack capabilities. Comments are made with regard to the approaches which have been investigated to alleviate typical problem areas such as wall boundary effects. Because of the need for increased Reynolds number capability at high subsonic speeds, a considerable portion of the paper deals with a description of the 20 by 60 cm two-dimensional test section of the Langley 0.3 meter transonic cryogenic tunnel which is currently in the calibration and shakedown phase.

Acoustic duct liner optimization using finite elements

Determination of a mathematical model which may be used for obtaining optimum acoustic liners in aeroengine ducts was the goal of this study. Starting with a baseline finite element model which consumed too much computer time to permit optimum liner evaluation for realistic ducts and source frequencies, a survey was conducted of candidate methods for reducing computational effort. A highly effective boundary exclusive decomposition method was developed which enables L-U decomposition of a major partition of the global matrix to be performed once only. Timing experiments using the technique in duct liner optimization show a reduction of between one and two orders of magnitude in the central processor unit (CPU) time of the baseline model.

A macroscopic profile of the typical quasi-perpendicular bow shock - Isee 1 and 2

A macroscopic examination of field and particle properties of the bow shock recorded on November 5, 1977, identified earlier as stable features by comparison of Isee 1 and 2 data, is presented. Attention is given to the extent to which the shock was in a typical state, and multidiagnostic observations are combined to define the shock profile. It is found that the shock profile offered several unanticipated structural features, which include a variable directional profile of the reflected proton group passing through the front, an electrostatic boundary effect associated with the reflected protons upstream, and an oscillatory buildup of proton thermalization behind the overshoot portion of the shock signature.

Boundary conditions which lead to excitation of instabilities in plasma simulations

Two examples of two-dimensional electrostatic particle-code simulations are shown in which one exhibits characteristics of a stable plasma while the other exhibits unstable, long wavelength plasma oscillations. The only difference between the two simulations is a change in the boundary condition on the electrostatic potential. An energy theorem is derived which shows that the rate of change of field and particle energy within a closed volume is related to a surface integral involving the electrostatic potential and the normal component of the electric current. An analytic theory is developed for a one-dimensional plasma to show how boundary effects can excite spurious plasma instabilities. The theory is tested with a series of one-dimensional plasma simulations. Finally, practical considerations on means of avoiding the non-physical instabilities in simulation plasmas are given.

A numerical method based on the Fourier-Fourier transform approach for modeling 1-D electron plasma evolution

A numerical method is presented for studying one-dimensional electron plasma evolution under typical interplanetary conditions. The method applies the Fourier-Fourier transform approach to a plasma model that is a generalization of the electrostatic Vlasov-Poisson system of equations. Conservation laws that are modified to include the plasma model generalization and also the boundary effects of nonperiodic solutions are given. A new conservation law for entropy in the transformed space is then introduced. These conservation laws are used to verify the numerical solutions. A discretization error analysis is presented. Two numerical instabilities and the methods used for their suppression are treated. It is shown that in interplanetary plasma conditions, the bump-on-tail instability produces significant excitation of plasma oscillations at the Bohm-Gross frequency and its second harmonic. An explanation of the second harmonic excitation is given in terms of wave-wave coupling during the growth phase of the instability.

Monte Carlo calculations of elementary particle properties

The object of this project is to calculate the masses of the elementary particles. This ambitious goal apparently is not possible using analytic methods or known approximation methods. However, it is probable that the power of a modern super computer will make at least part of the low lying mass spectrum accessible through direct numerical computation. Initial attempts by several groups at calculating this spectrum on small lattices of space time points have been very promising. Using new methods and super computers considerable progress has been made towards evaluating the mass spectrum on comparatively large lattices. Only more time and faster machines with increased storage will allow calculations of systems with guaranteed minimal boundary effects. The ideas that currently go into this calculation are outlined.

A Leaky Waveguide Model for MHD Wave Driven Winds from Coronal Holes

Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves, driven by the large scale convective motions of the photosphere are suggested as a possible source of additional acceleration for the stellar wind. Most of the turbulent power in a coronal hole is carried by MHD waves with periods of a few hundred seconds or longer. This is evident from direct observations of turbulence in the solar photosphere, as well as in situ observations of turbulence in the solar wind. But waves with periods this long have wavelengths which are typically as large as the transverse scale of the coronal hole flux tube itself. For these waves boundary effects are important and the coronal hole must be treated as a waveguide. The propagation of MHD waves using this waveguide approach is discussed. The simple model presented demonstrates that coronal holes can act as waveguides for MHD waves. For typical solar parameters the waves are compressible and can generate a wave tensile force which tends to cancel at least part of the wave pressure force. This effect tends to decrease the efficiency of MHD wave acceleration.

A variational assimilation method for satellite and conventional data: Development of basic model for diagnosis of cyclone systems

A three-dimensional diagnostic model for the assimilation of satellite and conventional meteorological data is developed with the variational method of undetermined multipliers. Gridded fields of data from different type, quality, location, and measurement source are weighted according to measurement accuracy and merged using least squares criteria so that the two nonlinear horizontal momentum equations, the hydrostatic equation, and an integrated continuity equation are satisfied. The model is used to compare multivariate variational objective analyses with and without satellite data with initial analyses and the observations through criteria that were determined by the dynamical constraints, the observations, and pattern recognition. It is also shown that the diagnoses of local tendencies of the horizontal velocity components are in good comparison with the observed patterns and tendencies calculated with unadjusted data. In addition, it is found that the day-night difference in TOVS biases are statistically different (95% confidence) at most levels. Also developed is a hybrid nonlinear sigma vertical coordinate that eliminates hydrostatic truncation error in the middle and upper troposphere and reduces truncation error in the lower troposphere. Finally, it is found that the technique used to grid the initial data causes boundary effects to intrude into the interior of the analysis a distance equal to the average separation between observations.

The crystallization of small particles and droplets

A general expression is derived for the volume fraction of material crystallized as a function of time for the situation where boundary effects may be important, and it is applied to a sample consisting of a monodisperse array of small particles. It is assumed that crystallization occurs via homogeneous nucleation followed by crystal growth. The crystallization rate is shown to be controlled by a single dimensionless parameter, beta. Beta exp 1/4 is a dimensionless particle radius which tends to be small when the growth rate is large or when the nucleation rate is small. When beta is large, the general expression for the volume fraction transformed reduces to the standard expression valid for bulk samples. When beta is small, it reduces to the formula used to compute the volume fraction crystallized in droplet undercooling experiments. Hence, the present results are pertinent for the interpretation of some droplet undercooling experiments as well as isothermal DSC and DTA experiments.

Processing of laser formed SiC powder

Superior SiC characteristics can be achieved through the use of ideal constituent powders and careful post-synthesis processing steps. High purity SiC powders of approx. 1000 A uniform diameter, nonagglomerated and spherical were produced. This required major revision of the particle formation and growth model from one based on classical nucleation and growth to one based on collision and coalescence of Si particles followed by their carburization. Dispersions based on pure organic solvents as well as steric stabilization were investigated. Although stable dispersions were formed by both, subsequent part fabrication emphasized the pure solvents since fewer problems with drying and residuals of the high purity particles were anticipated. Test parts were made by the colloidal pressing technique; both liquid filtration and consolidation (rearrangement) stages were modeled. Green densities corresponding to a random close packed structure (approx. 63%) were achieved; this highly perfect structure has a high, uniform coordination number (greater than 11) approaching the quality of an ordered structure without introducing domain boundary effects. After drying, parts were densified at temperatures ranging from 1800 to 2100 C. Optimum densification temperatures will probably be in the 1900 to 2000 C range based on these preliminary results which showed that 2050 C samples had experienced substantial grain growth. Although overfired, the 2050 C samples exhibited excellent mechanical properties. Biaxial tensile strengths up to 714 MPa and Vickers hardness values of 2430 kg/sq mm 2 were both more typical of hot pressed than sintered SiC. Both result from the absence of large defects and the confinement of residual porosity (less than 2.5%) to small diameter, uniformly distributed pores.

Why does near ridge extensional seismicity occur primarily in the Indian Ocean?

It is argued that though thermoelastic stresses provide a low level background in all plates, the data favoring their contributing significantly to the stress field and seismicity in the young oceanic lithosphere may be interpreted in terms of stresses resulting from individual plate geometry and local boundary effects. The dramatic concentration of extensional seismicity in the Central Indian Ocean region is shown to be consistent with finite element results for the intraplate stress incorporating the effects of the Himalayan collision and the various subduction zones. Most of the data for both ridge-parallel extension and depth stratification are provided by earthquakes in this area, and it is suggested that these effects may be due more to the regional stress.

Thermal conductivity and Kapitza boundary resistance of He-4 near T(gamma)

The preliminary results of high resolution measurements of the thermal conductivity of He-4 in a cell with a nominal 1 mm gap are reported and compared with previous results obtained with a 2 mm gap. The temperature dependence of the conductivity was found to be similar for both cells, indicating that size and boundary effects are well controlled. The detailed behavior of the Kapitza resistance just below T(gamma) is also reported.

Generalized hydrodynamic transport in lattice-gas automata

The generalized hydrodynamics of two-dimensional lattice-gas automata is solved analytically in the linearized Boltzmann approximation. The dependence of the transport coefficients (kinematic viscosity, bulk viscosity, and sound speed) upon wave number k is obtained analytically. Anisotropy of these coefficients due to the lattice symmetry is studied for the entire range of wave number, k. Boundary effects due to a finite mean free path (Knudsen layer) are analyzed, and accurate comparisons are made with lattice-gas simulations.

CNO destruction by spallation and type I X-ray bursts

Recent work on the surface boundary conditions of accreting neutron stars indicates that appreciable amounts of CNO elements can be destroyed by spallation. Previous authors assume an accretion of near-solar-abundance material which is not altered by boundary effects. Steady state models of accreting neutron stars are constructed assuming all but traces of metals are destroyed due to spallation in the surface layers. Models with solar accretion for comparison are also constructed. The models are compared with Exosat observations of 4U/MXB 1636 - 53. It is found that the simplifications introduced by assuming CNO destruction does not bring theory closer to describing what is observed.

Crack-mouth displacements for semielliptical surface cracks subjected to remote tension and bending loads

The exact analytical solution for an embedded elliptical crack in an infinite body subjected to arbitrary loading was used in conjunction with the finite element alternating method to obtain crack-mouth-opening displacements (CMOD) for surface cracks in finite plates subjected to remote tension. Identical surface-crack configurations were also analyzed with the finite element method using 20-noded element for plates subjected to both remote tension and bending. The CMODs from these two methods generally agreed within a few percent of each other. Comparisons made with experimental results obtained from surface cracks in welded aluminum alloy specimens subjected to tension also showed good agreement. Empirical equations were developed for CMOD for a wide range of surface-crack shapes and sizes subjected to tension and bending loads. These equations were obtained by modifying the Green-Sneddon exact solution for an elliptical crack in an infinite body to account for finite boundary effects. These equations should be useful in monitoring surface-crack growth in tests and in developing complete crack-face-displacement equations for use in three-dimensional weight-function methods.
