Conceptual Design Study of a Thermal Energy Storage System Using Granular Solids for Coal-fired Boilers

<span style="font-size: 12pt;">Presentation for the 2020 International Pittsburgh Coal Conference held virtually from September 8-11, 2020.</span><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Abstract: As electricity from various renewable energy sources is increasingly supplied to the power grid, the grid’s stability will be challenged. Proposed grid-stability solutions will need to address variability of sources, such as solar and wind energy, in order to alleviate problems such as overgeneration and ramping. In regions where increases in solar energy are prominent, such as California, the net power demand curve often referred to as “the Duck Curve,” has caused problems for energy dispatchers, due to over-generation and fast ramping demands. In this project, we investigated a conceptual design for a Thermal Energy Storage System (TESS) integrated into a coal-fired power plant to support grid-scale storage. Implementing a TESS into power plants can allow for an increase in renewable sources, increase grid resilience, and allow conventional coal-fired plants to operate more efficiently. For this project, a TESS using granular solids as the energy-storage media is integrated into a conventional coal-fired power plant. The purpose of the TESS is to store energy from the flue gas during low demand periods and transfer the energy to steam during peak demand periods. The storage allows the stabilization of combustion and related boiler components at low loads and provides the opportunity to avoid some shutdowns. This study uses thermodynamic properties of several candidate thermal storage materials to estimate the size of storage system required for several operating scenarios. </span>

Method and apparatus for reheat steam temperature control of oxy-fired boilers

Method and system for adjusting a measured reheat outlet steam temperature (“RPV”) to approximate a reheat outlet steam temperature setpoint (“RSP”) in a boiler. An RPV is compared to an RSP. If the RPV is less than the RSP and a position of a fuel nozzle tilt (“TILTPV”) is below a high limit of the fuel nozzle tilt (“TILTHIGH”), the TILTPV is increased while a flow rate of a secondary flue gas recirculation (“SFGRPV”) is kept constant. If the RPV is less than the RSP and the TILTPV is at the TILTHIGH, the SFGRPV is increased. If the RPV is greater than the RSP and the SFGRPV is greater than a low limit of flow rate of the SFGR (“SFGRLOW”), the SFGRPV is decreased, while the TILTPV is kept constant. If the RPV is greater than the RSP and the SFGRPV is at the SFGRLOW, the TILTPV is decreased.

Application Of The ASME Boiler And Pressure Vessel Code In The Design Of SSR Cryomodule Beamlines For PIP-II Project At Fermilab

This contribution reports the design of the main components used to interconnect SRF cavities and superconducting focusing lenses in the SSR Cryomodule beamlines, developed in the framework of the PIP-II project at Fermilab. The focus of the present contribution is on the design and testing of the edge-welded bellows according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. The activities performed to qualify the bellows to be assembled in cleanroom, for operation in high vacuum, cryogenic environments, and their characterization from magnetic standpoint, will also be presented.

NSUF BOILER Pre-Irradiation Characterization and High Flux Isotope Reactor Experiment Design

Alumina-forming austenitic (AFA) stainless steels have emerged as a candidate alloy because of their high-temperature strength, formability, cost, and compatibility with primary coolants for lead-cooled fast reactors (LFRs). This class of steels has exceptional high-temperature oxidation performance; however, a high concentration of Ni is required to stabilize the austenite phase and to provide sufficient creep strength. AFA stainless steels are also susceptible to liquid metal embrittlement (LME). Additionally, under neutron irradiation, Ni will enrich at grain boundaries due to radiation-induced segregation (RIS). Nickel RIS can increase the LME under these coupled effects. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the NSUF program have leveraged its High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and experience with complex irradiation experiments to design experiment capsules that test the aforementioned coupled effects. These capsules are designed for insertion in the central flux trap, the highest flux region, of HFIR. The experiment capsules will be filled with Pb, designed to passively melt from the gamma heating in HFIR. The specimens were fabricated into miniature tensile specimens from two different alloys, GA05-25Ni and GA05-20Ni, varying Ni concentrations. The experiment capsules are designed to achieve target temperatures of 400 °C and 650 °C with accumulated dosage of 3 dpa. This report documents the specimen alloy characterization, experimental design, and expected performance of the capsules.

End-Use Savings Shapes Upgrade Package Documentation: Wall and Roof Insulation, New Windows, LED Lighting, HP-RTU and ASHP-Boiler

Building on the successfully completed effort to calibrate and validate the U.S. Department of Energy’s ResStock™ and ComStock™ models over the past 3 years, the objective of this work is to produce national data sets that empower analysts working for federal, state, utility, city, and manufacturer stakeholders to answer a broad range of analysis questions. The goal of this work is to develop energy efficiency, electrification, and demand flexibility enduse load shapes (electricity, gas, propane, or fuel oil) that cover a majority of the high-impact, market-ready (or nearly market-ready) upgrade measures, or upgrades. “Measures” refers to energy efficiency variables that can be applied to buildings during modeling. An end-use savings shape is the difference in energy consumption between a baseline building and a building with an energy efficiency, electrification, or demand flexibility upgrade applied. It results in a time-series profile that is broken down by end use and fuel (electricity or on-site gas, propane, or fuel oil use) at each time step.
