Decaying sterile neutrinos at short baselines

Long-standing anomalous experimental results from short-baseline neutrino experiments have persisted for decades. These results, when interpreted with one or more light sterile neutrinos, are inconsistent with numerous null results experimentally. However, if the sterile neutrino decays en route to the detector, this can mimic ν μ → ν e oscillation signals while avoiding many of these external constraints. We revisit this solution to the MiniBooNE and LSND puzzles in view of new data from the MicroBooNE experiment at Fermilab. Using MicroBooNE’s liquid-argon time-projection chamber search for an excess of ν e in the Booster beam, we derive new limits in two models’ parameter spaces of interest; where the sterile neutrino decays (I) via mixing with the active neutrinos, or (II) via higher-dimensional operators. We also provide an updated, comprehensive fit to the MiniBooNE neutrino- and antineutrino-beam data, including appearance ( ν e ) and disappearance ( ν μ ) channels. Despite alleviating the tension with muon neutrino disappearance experiments, we find that the latest MicroBooNE analysis rules out the decaying sterile neutrino solution in a large portion of the parameter space at more than 99% CL. Search for very-short-baseline oscillations of reactor antineutrinos with the SoLid detector

In this paper we report the first scientific result based on antineutrinos emitted from the BR2 reactor at SCK CEN. The SoLid experiment uses a novel type of highly granular detector whose basic detection unit combines two scintillators, polyvinyl toluene (PVT) and Li 6 F : ZnS ( Ag ) , to measure antineutrinos via their inverse- β -decay products. An advantage of PVT is its highly linear response as a function of deposited particle energy. The full-scale detector comprises 12 800 voxels and operates over a very short 6.3–8.9 m baseline from the reactor core. The detector segmentation and its three-dimensional imaging capabilities facilitate the extraction of the positron energy from the rest of the visible energy, allowing the latter to be utilized for signal-background discrimination. We present a result obtained from 280 reactor-on days (55 MW mean power) and 172 reactor-off days, respectively, of live data taking. A total of 29 479 ± 603 (stat) antineutrino candidates have been selected, corresponding to an average rate of 105 events per day and a signal-to-background ratio of 0.27. A search for disappearance of antineutrinos to a sterile state has been conducted using complementary model-dependent frequentist and Bayesian fits, providing constraints on the allowed region of the reactor antineutrino anomaly.

Final Search for Short-Baseline Neutrino Oscillations with the PROSPECT-I Detector at HFIR

The PROSPECT experiment is designed to perform precise searches for antineutrino disappearance at short distances (7–9 m) from compact nuclear reactor cores. This Letter reports results from a new neutrino oscillation analysis performed using the complete data sample from the PROSPECT-I detector operated at the High Flux Isotope Reactor in 2018. The analysis uses a multiperiod selection of inverse beta decay neutrino interactions with reduced backgrounds and enhanced statistical power to set limits on electron neutrino disappearance caused by mixing with sterile neutrinos with 0.2–20 eV 2 mass splittings. Inverse beta decay positron energy spectra from six different reactor-detector distance ranges are found to be statistically consistent with one another, as would be expected in the absence of sterile neutrino oscillations. The data excludes at 95% confidence level the existence of sterile neutrinos in regions above 3 eV 2 previously unexplored by terrestrial experiments, including all space below 10 eV 2 suggested by the recently strengthened Gallium Anomaly. The best-fit point of the Neutrino-4 reactor experiment’s claimed observation of short-baseline oscillation is ruled out at more than 5 standard deviations.

Evaluating Recursive Blind Forecast Against API and Baseline: A Puerto Rican Case Study on Solar Irradiance for Normal and Extreme Weather

This paper leverages ongoing work in a community microgrid in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico to forecast global horizontal irradiance (GHI) and compare performance in normal and extreme weather. Given a positive correlation of 0.98 between GHI and PV power, forecasting GHI can be an effective, indirect forecast of photovoltaic (PV) power, especially in microgrids where the end-users, owners, operators, or other stakeholders are reluctant to share data for training or validation due to privacy and security concerns. A recursive one-shot (termed as "blind") forecast is, hence, formulated, wherein a gradient-boosted regression tree (GBR) is built to forecast GHI for a 7-day horizon in normal weather, and a 2-day horizon in extreme weather. To demonstrate its resilience, the architecture is trained on normal and hurricane weather GHI from 2002-2022. It is generalized on February 9-16, 2023, and on the landfall of Hurricane Nicole (Nov 4-5, 2022), respectively. Forecasts from GBR are compared against that from a satellite-based API resource and three baselines: persistence, averaging, and exponential smoothing. Results show GBR and persistence outperform sophisticated API in both types of weather for this case study.

Long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics potential of the DUNE experiment

The sensitivity of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) to neutrino oscillation is determined, based on a full simulation, reconstruction, and event selection of the far detector and a full simulation and parameterized analysis of the near detector. Detailed uncertainties due to the flux prediction, neutrino interaction model, and detector effects are included. DUNE will resolve the neutrino mass ordering to a precision of 5σ, for all δ CP values, after 2 years of running with the nominal detector design and beam configuration. It has the potential to observe charge-parity violation in the neutrino sector to a precision of 3σ (5σ) after an exposure of 5 (10) years, for 50% of all δ CP values. It will also make precise measurements of other parameters governing long-baseline neutrino oscillation, and after an exposure of 15 years will achieve a similar sensitivity to sin 2 2$θ_{13}$ to current reactor experiments.

Data Testing of Polyethylene Thermal Scattering Law with New Thermal Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) Plutonium Baseline Benchmark, PU-MET-MIXED-002

Five plutonium baseline experiments completed in September of 2018 from the Thermal Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) program have been accepted by the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project as PU-MET-MIXED-002 and will be included in the 2020 version of the handbook. The experiments were made up of stacked layers of plutonium Zero Power Physics Reactor (ZPPR) plates moderated by polyethylene (PE, chemical formula C2H4) to varying degrees to create configurations with five different neutron spectra, including one fast configuration, one thermal configuration, and three mixed configurations. Calculations of the benchmark show overprediction of k eff when using the most recent release of the Evaluated Nuclear Data File Version B (ENDF/B) library release (VIII.0) cross sections, particularly when compared to the previous ENDF/B-VII.1 results. One potential source of overprediction was hypothesized to be the new Molecular Dynamics (MD) generated PE Thermal Scattering Law (TSL). The overprediction was shown via calculation to not be caused by the new ENDF/B-VIII.0 thermal scattering law, and in fact the overprediction was mitigated by the new PE TSL.

Lessons from commissioning of the cryogenic system for the Short-Baseline Neutrino Detector at Fermilab

Results from commissioning and first year of operations of the cryogenic system of the Short-Baseline Neutrino Detector (SBND) and its membrane cryostat installed at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory are described. The SBND detector is installed in a 200 m$^3$ membrane cryostat filled with liquid argon, which serves both as target and as active media. For the correct operation of the detector, the liquid argon must be kept in very stable thermal conditions while the contamination of electronegative impurities must be consistently kept at the level of small fractions of parts per billion. The detector is operated in Booster Neutrino Beams (BNB) at Fermilab for the search of sterile neutrinos and measurements of neutrino-argon cross sections. The cryostat and the cryogenic systems also serve as prototypes for the much larger equipment to be used for the LBNF/DUNE experiment. Since its installation in 2018-2023 and cooldown in spring of 2024, the cryostat and the cryogenic system have been commissioned to support the detector operations. The lessons learned through installation, testing, commissioning, cooldown, and initial operations are described.

Baseline Postirradiation Examination of the FUTURIX-FTA Experiments

Postirradiation Examination (PIE) results from the baseline examination of the FUTURIX-FTA irradiation experiment are presented in this report. The FUTURIX-FTA irradiation was designed to study the fuel performance of candidate transmutation fuels. The FUTURIX-FTA experiment was conducted in the true fast neutron spectrum conditions of the Phénix sodium fast test reactor in France. FUTURIX-FTA contained several compositions that were also irradiated as part of the AFC-1 test in cadmium filtered positions in the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) that approximate the neutron spectrum of a fast reactor. This experiment was a joint collaboration between the Department of Energy (DOE) in the U.S. and the Commissariat á l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives (CEA) in France. A joint agreement between DOE and CEA was established in 2004 to conduct an irradiation experiment of metallic and nitride fuels in the Phénix reactor at CEA. Both the FUTURIX-FTA tests and the AFC-1 tests were conducted for the DOE Advanced Fuels Campaign (AFC) that is part of Fuel Cycle Research & Development (FCRD) program. These programs seek to develop and demonstrate the technologies needed to transmute long-lived transuranic actinide isotopes contained in spent nuclear fuel via fast reactor technology. The long term goal of this work is to reduce the radiotoxicity of future high level waste repositories. Post-irradiation examination of irradiated fuels experiments provides data related to in reactor fuel performance and input into future fuel design choices. The compositions of the FUTURIX-FTA pins were designed to test if minor actinides could be incorporated into the fuel of a fast reactor without significantly changing fuel performance observed for previously well studied fuels. The fuel performance of metallic fuel in fast reactors has been well documented. Likewise the irradiation performance of nitride fuels in fast reactors has also been documented. However the existing database for nitride fuels is much smaller than the database for metal fuels.
