Visually directed pointing as a function of target distance, direction, and available cues.

In pointing at visual targets without sight of the hand, large errors occur. There is a tendency to overreach targets, and this tendency is much greater (about 25 cm) when convergence is the only cue to distance than when there are many cues (2 to 11 cm). Angular errors of up to 10 deg also occur. These tend to be to the side opposite the sighting eye, when the favored hand is used. The variance of the pointing response with convergence alone is reduced by approximately half with the introduction of several spatial cues. These results are interpreted as indicating that, for a target within the reach of the arm and with convergence alone as a cue, the depth signal produced by the visual system corresponds to a greater distance than that produced when many cues are available. The results are also consistent with the hypothesis that perceived direction tends to approximate direction from the sighting eye.

Social impact evaluation : Some implications of the specific decisional context approach for anticipatory project assessment with special reference to available alternatives and to techniques of evaluating the social impacts of the anticipated effects of such alternatives

The implications are explored of the specific decision context approach to anticipatory project assessment. More specifically, it is hypothesized that with respect to any given effect of a proposed project or action (mobility, job opportunities, air pollution, population distribution, etc.) such effect will likely differ in probability and/or magnitude from one decisional context to another; that the social desirability or undesirability of a given effect is a function (will differ with) each specific decisional context; that therefore the social impact of such effect will in all likelihood differ with each specific decisional context; and that the social significance of even the dame social impact of a given effect will vary from one decisional context to another when such social impact interacts with (competes with or reinforces) the social impacts of other effects. It also follows from this analysis that the respective roles of scientific method (demonstrable data) and adversarial system will not only differ with each specific decisional context but with each alternative course of action available to the decisional entity in each specific context.

JSC earth resources data analysis capabilities available to EOD revision B

A list and summary description of all Johnson Space Center electronic laboratory and photographic laboratory capabilities available to earth resources division personnel for processing earth resources data are provided. The electronic capabilities pertain to those facilities and systems that use electronic and/or photographic products as output. The photographic capabilities pertain to equipment that uses photographic images as input and electronic and/or table summarizes processing steps. A general hardware description is presented for each of the data processing systems, and the titles of computer programs are used to identify the capabilities and data flow.

Spaceflight tracking and data network operational reliability computer output for MTBF and availability. Appendix V to CSC-1-395

Tables of data are provided to show the availability of Skylab data to selected ground stations during the phases of Skylab preflight, Skylab unmanned condition, and Skylab manned condition. The mean time between failure (MTBF) of the same Skylab functions is tabulated for the selected ground stations. All reliability data are based on a 90 percent confidence interval.

Patterns of Availability and Use of Audiotape Cassettes in Special Libraries

The availability and use of audiotape cassettes is studied in terms of user requirements. The following factors were examined: how special libraries utilize audiotape cassettes; who the users of the medium are; how the libraries acquire and maintain their collection; and opinions of librarians as to the value of the audiotape cassette as a medium for dissemination of information.

User services available from USDA'S aerial photography field office

APFO furnishes LANDSAT imagery and supporting NASA aircraft imagery to NASA-funded principal investigators who are working within the agriculture discipline. The office holds and reproduces Skylab imagery and a variety of aircraft photography (including infrared) from various government agencies. Available products are listed. Other topics discussed include quality control of photographic materials, analytical aerotriangulation, and photographic processes.

The status of environmental satellites and availability of their data products

The latest available information about the status of unclassified environmental satellite (flown by the United States) and their data products is presented. The type of environmental satellites discussed include unmanned earth resource and meteorological satellites, and manned satellites which can act as a combination platform for instruments. The capabilities and data products of projected satellites are discussed along with those of currently operating systems.

Availability and mean time between failures of redundant systems with random maintenance of subsystems

It is shown how the availability and MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) of a redundant system with subsystems maintenanced at the points of so-called stationary renewal processes can be determined from the distributions of the intervals between maintenance actions and of the failure-free operating intervals of the subsystems. The results make it possible, for example, to determine the frequency and duration of hidden failure states in computers which are incidentally corrected during the repair of observed failures.

Phase fluctuation spectra: New radio science information to become available in the DSN tracking system Mark III-77

An algorithm was developed for the continuous and automatic computation of Doppler noise concurrently at four sample rate intervals, evenly spanning three orders of magnitude. Average temporal Doppler phase fluctuation spectra will be routinely available in the DSN tracking system Mark III-77 and require little additional processing. The basic (noise) data will be extracted from the archival tracking data file (ATDF) of the tracking data management system.

Evaluation of commercially-available spacecraft-type heat pipes

As part of an effort to develop reliable, cost effective spacecraft thermal control heat pipes, life tests on 30 commercially available heat pipes in 10 groups of different design and material combinations were conducted. Results for seven groups were reported herein. Materials are aluminum and stainless steel, and working fluids are methanol and ammonia. The formation of noncondensible gas was observed for times exceeding 11,000 hours. The heat transport capacities of the pipes were also determined.

Evaluation of commercially-available spacecraft-type heat pipes

As part of an effort to develop reliable, cost effective spacecraft thermal control heat pipes, Lewis Research Center of NASA is conducting life tests on 30 commercially-available heat pipes in 10 groups of different design and material combinations. Materials are aluminum and stainless steel, and working fluids are methanol and ammonia. The formation of noncondensible gas is observed for times exceeding 11,000 hours. The heat transport capacities of the pipes are also determined. Considerable gas is found in two groups of methanol pipes; one group shows no gas. One group of ammonia pipes has no observable gas. Another group has much gas. Manufacturers' processing schedules are examined for differences explaining the presence of gas. Heat transport capacity is found to be severely reduced in some pipes containing gas.
