Mechanically robust and reprocessable imine exchange networks from modular polyester pre-polymers

Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) containing reversible cross-links impart recyclability to thermoset materials without sacrificing their desirable properties (e.g. high tensile strength and solvent resistance). In addition to thermal recycling, the sustainability of these materials may be further improved by incorporating bio-sourced monomers or by enabling alternate end-of-life fates, such as biodegradation or recovery of starting materials. The alternating ring-opening copolymerisation of epoxides and cyclic anhydrides permits the modular synthesis of polyester pre-polymers that can then be cross-linked to form dynamic imine-linked networks. In this work, we report the synthesis and characterisation of five imine exchange polyester CANs with varied cross-linking densities and pre-polymer architectures. While the materials exhibit characteristic thermoset properties at service temperatures, differences in pre-polymer architecture produce distinct dynamic mechanical effects at elevated temperatures. The networks may be thermally reprocessed with full recovery of their tensile strengths and cross-linking densities, dissociated to pre-polymer, or hydrolytically degraded.

A chemical approach for the future of PLA upcycling: from plastic wastes to new 3D printing materials

As the demand for PLA increases, post-consumer disposal strategies must be carefully considered. While we would love to embrace a bioplastic future, we also need to tread carefully. Though PLA is widely claimed to be biodegradable, full degradation often requires conditions not typically found in landfills or industrial composting. Therefore, it will negatively impact the environment if treated carelessly. Here, in this work, we report a simple PLA upcycling path to turn existing PLA wastes into new 3D printable materials within 48 hours. The ester bonds of PLA can be cleaved efficiently via aminolysis. The obtained monomeric compound was derivatized with methacrylic anhydride, which introduces double bonds and thus a cross-linkable monomer is obtained. In combination with a comonomer and initiator, a photocurable resin is produced. The resin can be fed into any commercially available photocuring 3D printer. The 3D printed parts derived from PLA wastes exhibit impressive performances with a tensile strength of 58.6 MPa, Young's modulus of 2.8 GPa, and glass transition at ~180 °C. Our work demonstrates a new route to active upcycling of PLA while minimizing the need for disposal.

Tunable Conversion of Poly(Acrylic Acid) to Vinyl Methyl Ether Copolymers via Electrochemical Decarboxylation

Recognizing the potential of polymer-to-polymer transformations for plastics valorization, a new electrochemical strategy for the decarboxylative functionalization of polyacrylates has been developed. In contrast to most electrochemical approaches to plastic waste valorization that use small-molecule mediators or only form deconstruction products, this report describes one of the first direct electrochemical redox upconversions of a commodity polymer and involves activation of poly(acrylic acid), a material commonly found in disposable diapers and other personal hygiene products. Via electrochemical decarboxylation, poly(acrylic acid) is converted to methyl ether-containing copolymers. Although methods to prepare the 1:1 regularly alternating poly(vinyl methyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride) are known, routes to generate copolymers with variable levels of vinyl methyl ether and acrylate moieties are unknown, but such polymers may have utility in similar applications, such as dentifrices. Tunable conversions with up to 62 mol% vinyl methyl ether content were achieved via controlled-current electrolyses at >100 mA. This approach enables efficient access to copolymers with broad range of comonomer content from a common waste polymer starting material.

A recyclable self-healing composite with advanced sensing property

Polymer-based composites frequently encounter damage, often lurking beneath the surface and proving challenges to their early detection and repair. While material-based sensors show promise for encoding self-sensing properties within these composites, their in situ healing and reprocessability remain significant challenges. Therefore, the overarching goal of this study is the creation of a reprocessable polymeric composite encoded with self-healing attributes and the ability to autonomously sense damage. At the core of this innovation are vitrimers, a polymeric material characterized by a covalently adaptive dynamic network responsive to external factors such as heat. They combine thermoset-like resilience with thermoplastic-like flowability on demand under external stimuli. We nanoengineer a polyester-based vitrimeric polymer by incorporating piezoresistive carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as reinforcing elements that not only enhance its mechanical strength but also create a percolation network within the composite, thereby enabling piezoresistive self-sensing properties, all the while preserving the intrinsic self-healing capabilities offered by the vitrimeric matrix. The fabrication process of the composite involves a solvent-free in situ polymerization method that combines epoxy and anhydride-containing monomers with ~ 0.1 wt.% of CNTs. Once it was established that the introduction of CNTs into the polymeric matrix did not compromise the mechanical properties of the composite, their strain-sensing properties were characterized by applying cyclic loading while measuring their electrical resistance. Strikingly, CNT-enhanced vitrimer composite consistently retains its mechanical and sensing properties through repeated cycles of reshaping and reprocessing, underscoring its potential as a robust distributed strain sensor. This polyester-based vitrimeric composite is also easily recyclable without harsh chemical treatments. Preliminary findings from this study conclusively demonstrate that the bulk composite boasts both self-sensing capabilities and in situ detect healing properties, charting a promising course towards the development of a mechanically resilient multifunctional composite that seamlessly integrates selfsensing and healing capabilities.

Compatibilization Strategy and Mechanism for Co-stabilizing Commingled Plastics and Pyrolyzed Rubber in Asphalt

Hot mix asphalt mixture is considered the ideal approach to reuse waste plastics in high-value applications because of its very high amount of usage in highway construction. However, the differences in polarity and density between polymers and asphalt lead to polymer coalescence and therefore the poor storage stability of modified asphalt. These challenges are exalted when recycling commingled plastics. This study introduced an innovative compatibilization strategy and mechanism for co-stabilizing commingled plastics and pyrolyzed rubber in asphalt. Commingled plastics were first grafted with maleic anhydride for surface activation, followed by reactive kneading with pyrolyzed rubber and crosslinking agent to form an integrated thermoplastic elastomer (ITPE) for asphalt modification. The mechanical, thermal, and interfacial behaviors of the ITPE were evaluated through tensile testing, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The storage stability and rheological properties of the modified binder blends were evaluated through the cigar tube test and dynamic shear rheometer testing. Results demonstrated a successful formation of imide bonds in the ITPE, which can improve the strength, ductility, and thermal stability of rubber–plastic composites. Appropriate utilization of crosslinking agents can improve both rutting and fatigue resistance of ITPE-modified asphalt with good storage stability because of the co-existence of rigid plastic and soft rubbery regimes and the formation of a crosslink network. Furthermore, excessive content of crosslinker led to severe phase separation and reduced storage stability of modified binder blends. Extra crosslinker tended to float in asphalt because of its low density and caused an excessive formation of the crosslink network in the top section of the asphalt.

Structural features of xylan dictate reactivity and functionalization potential for bio-based materials

Plant-based materials have the potential to replace some petroleum-based products, offering compostability and biodegradability as critical advantages. Xylan-rich biomass sources are gaining recognition due to their abundance and underutilization in current industrial applications. Research of potential xylan applications has been complicated by the complex and heterogeneous structure that varies for different xylan feedstocks. Acylation is a broadly used reaction in functionalization of polysaccharides at an industrial scale. However, the efficiency of this reaction varies with the xylan source. To optimize xylan valorization, a systematic understanding of structure–reactivity relationships is essential. This study explores, characterizes, and compares various xylan feedstocks in the acylation process. Xylan feedstocks were analyzed for their chemical composition, degree of polymerization, branching, solubility, and presence of impurities. These features were correlated with xylan glycotypes’ reactivity toward functionalization with succinic anhydride in an optimized DMSO/KOH condition, achieving carboxyl contents of up to 1.46. We used principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering to identify key structural features of xylan that promote its reactivity. Our findings reveal that xylans with higher xylose content and lower degrees of branching exhibit enhanced reactivity, achieving higher carboxyl content and yields. Structural analyses confirmed successful modification, and light scattering analyses showed dramatic changes in the solution properties. Succinylation improves the solubility and film-forming properties of native xylans. This study shows key structure–reactivity relationships in xylan succinylation, establishing that low branching, high xylose content, and reduced lignin impurity enhance chemical functionalization. The results offer a framework for selecting optimal biomass feedstocks and support future efforts in genetic and synthetic biology to design plants with tunable xylan architectures. These findings advance the hemicellulose valorization for applications in coatings and packaging.

Selective condensation of aminoacyl adenylates by nucleoproteinoid microparticles.

Microparticles composed of each of four enzymically synthesized homopolynucleotides and the same lysine-rich proteinoid have been found to influence the condensation of the AMP-anhydrides of each of four amino acids. The conditions of preparation of the particles and other variables of the experiments control the types of reaction. When a period set of conditions was identified empirically, the incorporation favored the amino acids whose present-day codons are related to the homopolynucleotide in the particle.

Polyimidazopyrrolone model compounds.

The model reactions between phthalic anhydride and o-phenylenediamine were studied under conditions analogous to the polymerization and post-cyclization of dianhydrides with bis(o-diamines) to form polyimidazopyrrolones (Pyrrones). The route from the initial amide-acid-amine to the tetracyclic Pyrrone model when the reactions are conducted in aprotic solvents is highly competitive between isolatable benzimidazole-acid and imide-amine intermediates. Solid-state thermal conversion of the amide-acid-amine affords a unique dimeric species containing amide, imide, and benzimidazole functions. It was confirmed that melt techniques lead to disproportionation products. The application of these findings to related polymer synthesis is discussed.
