Updated constraints from electric dipole moments in the MSSM with R-parity violation

We revisit the electric dipole moments (EDMs) of quarks and leptons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with trilinear R-parity violation (RPV). In this framework, EDMs are induced at the two-loop level via RPV interactions. We perform a comprehensive recalculation of several classes of Barr-Zee type diagrams in a general Rξ gauge. While we find general agreement with previous analytic results in the literature, our work provides a valuable independent cross-check of the complicated calculations. We also point out some subtleties in the intermediate steps and in the choice of the flavor basis for the numerical evaluation of the expressions. By confronting the theoretical predictions with the latest experimental limits on EDMs, we derive updated constraints on combinations of RPV couplings. We highlight an approximate, testable correlation between the proton and neutron EDM that emerges within the considered class of RPV models, offering a distinctive signature for future EDM experiments.

Isospin-violating contributions to ϵ'/ϵ

The known isospin-breaking contributions to the K → ππ amplitudes are reanalyzed, taking into account our current understanding of the quark masses and the relevant non-perturbative inputs. We present a complete numerical reappraisal of the direct CP-violating ratio ϵ'/ϵ, where these corrections play a quite significant role. We obtain the Standard Model prediction Re (ϵ'/ϵ) = (14 ± 5) · 10 -4 , which is in very good agreement with the measured ratio. The uncertainty, which has been estimated conservatively, is dominated by our current ignorance about 1/N C -suppressed contributions to some relevant chiral-perturbation-theory low-energy constants.

Neutrinoless double beta decay via light neutralinos in R-parity violating supersymmetry

We perform a study of neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay mediated by the lightest neutralino of arbitrary mass in the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) under the presence of R-parity violating trilinear interactions. In this scenario, the exchange of the lightest neutralino can result in 0νββ decay of either long-range or short-range behaviour, depending on the neutralino mass. Using nuclear matrix elements calculated in the interacting boson model, we use an interpolation between the long- and short-range behaviours with an approximate formula. The non-observation of 0νββ decay is then used to place constraints on the supersymmetry parameter space, compatible with constraints from collider experiments. We compare these constraints to bounds from pion decays, CKM unitarity and big bang nucleosynthesis.

Quantifying limits on CP violating phases from EDMs in supersymmetry

We revisit the calculation of the electron, neutron, and proton electric dipole moments (EDMs) in the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM). The relatively large mass of the Higgs boson, m H ≃ 125 GeV coupled with the (as yet) lack of discovery of any supersymmetric particle at the LHC, has pushed the supersymmetry breaking scale to several TeV or higher. Though one might expect this decoupling to have relaxed completely any bounds on the two CP violating phases in the CMSSM (θ μ and θ A ), the impressive experimental improvements in the limits on the EDMs (particularly the electron EDM) still allow us to set constraints of order (0.01–0.1)π on θ A and (0.001–0.1)π on θ μ . We also discuss the impact of future improvements in the experimental limits on supersymmetric models.

$CP$ violation from $τ, t$ and $b$ dimension-6 Yukawa couplings — interplay of baryogenesis, EDM and Higgs physics

We explore the implications of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) with dimension-six terms involving the Higgs boson and third-generation fermion fields on the rate of Higgs boson production and decay into fermions, on the electric dipole moments (EDMs) of the electron, and on the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We study the consequences of allowing these additional terms for each flavor separately and for combinations of two flavors. We find that a complex $\tau$ Yukawa coupling can account for the observed baryon asymmetry $Y_B^{\rm obs}$ within current LHC and EDM bounds. A complex $b$ ($t$) Yukawa coupling can account for $4\%$ ($2\%$) of $Y_B^{\rm obs}$, whereas a combination of the two can reach $12\%$. Combining $\tau$ with either $t$ or $b$ enlarges the viable parameter space owing to cancellations in the EDM and in either Higgs production times decay or the total Higgs width, respectively. Interestingly, in such a scenario there exists a region in parameter space where the SMEFT contributions to the electron EDM cancel and collider signal strengths are precisely SM-like, while producing sufficient baryon asymmetry. Measuring $CP$ violation in Higgs decays to $\tau$ leptons is the smoking gun for this scenario.

Impact of indirect CP violation on Br( K S → μ + μ – ) ℓ=0

The decay K S → μ + μ – ) ℓ=0 , with the final muon pair in an angular-momentum zero state, is a sensitive probe of short-distance physics. It has recently been shown how to extract this branching ratio from neutral kaon decay data. We point out that the impact of indirect CP violation on the standard-model prediction of this mode, while nominally of order $\vert$ε K $\vert$ ~ 10 -3 , is enhanced by a large amplitude ratio and leads to a shift of the branching ratio Br( K S → μ + μ – ) ℓ=0 by a few percent, depending on the size of a relative phase that can be extracted from data. We also update the standard-model prediction of the short-distance contribution.

Renormalization-group equations of the LEFT at two loops: dimension-six baryon-number-violating operators

We present the second part of a systematic calculation of the two-loop anomalous dimensions for the low-energy effective field theory below the electroweak scale (LEFT): the baryon-number-violating sector at dimension six in the power counting. We obtain the results in two different schemes: in the algebraically consistent ’t Hooft-Veltman scheme for γ 5 , corrected for evanescent as well as chiral-symmetry-breaking effects through finite renormalizations; and in naive dimensional regularization, which in the considered sector of the theory does not lead to any ill-defined γ 5 -odd traces. Our results are of interest for a reanalysis of the constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model from proton-decay searches within an EFT framework at next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy.

Probing lepton flavor violation at Circular Electron-Positron Colliders

Lepton flavor violation is one of the cleanest probes of physics beyond the standard model. In this work, we explore the sensitivity of the process e + e – → τμ to new physics above the TeV scale at the proposed circular electron-positron colliders FCC-ee and CEPC. We compute the e + e – → τμ cross-section in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory and assess the relevant backgrounds. We compare our sensitivity projections to existing and expected constraints from tau decays and Z decays and find that the future electron-positron colliders provide competitive probes of new physics. We highlight the complementarity of searches for resonant e + e – → Z → τμ production on the Z pole and searches for non-resonant e + e – → τμ at higher center-of-mass energies.

Spontaneous CP violation and horizontal symmetry in the MSSM: toward lepton flavor naturalness

We study the contributions of supersymmetric models with a U(1) horizontal symmetry and only spontaneous CP breaking to various lepton flavor observables, such as μ → eγ and the electron electric dipole moment. We show that both a horizontal symmetry and a lack of explicit CP violation can alleviate the existing bounds from such observables. The undetermined \( \mathcal{O} \) (1) coefficients in such mass matrix models muddle the interpretation of the bounds from various flavor observables. To overcome this, we define a new fine-tuning measure for different observables in such setups. This allows us to study how naturally the observed IR flavor observables can emerge from a given mass matrix model. We use our flavor-naturalness measure in study of our supersymmetric models and quantify the degree of fine tuning required by the bounds from various lepton flavor observables at each mass scale of sleptons, neutralinos, and charginos.

Measurement of branching fractions and search for CP violation in $D^0 → π^+π^-η, D^0 → K^+K^-η$, and $D^0 → Φη$ at Belle

We measure the branching fractions and CP asymmetries for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $D^0 → π^+π^-η, D^0 → K^+K^-η$, and $D^0 → Φη$, using 980 fb -1 of data from the Belle experiment at the KEKB e + e - collider. We obtain $$\mathcal{B}(D^0 → π^+π^-η = \mathrm{[1.22 ± 0.02 (stat) ± 0.02(syst) ± 0.03}(\mathcal{B}_{\mathrm{ref}})] \mathrm{x 10^{-3}}$$ $$\mathcal{B}(D^0 → K^+K^-η = \mathrm{[1.80^{+0.07}_{-0.06}(stat) ± 0.04 (syst) ± 0.05}(\mathcal{B}_{\mathrm{ref}})] \mathrm{x 10^{-4}}$$ $$\mathcal{B}(D^0 → Φη = \mathrm{[1.84 ± 0.09 (stat) ± 0.0 (syst) ± 0.05}(\mathcal{B}_{\mathrm{ref}})] \mathrm{x 10^{-4}}$$ where the third uncertainty ($\mathcal{B}_{\mathrm{ref}}$) is from the uncertainty in the branching fraction of the reference mode $D^0 → K^-π^+η$. The color-suppressed decay $D^0 → Φη$ is observed for the first time, with very high significance. The results for the CP asymmetries are $$A_{CP} (D^0 → π^+π^-η) = \mathrm{[0.9 ± 1.2 (stat) ± 0.5 (syst)]}\%$$ $$A_{CP} (D^0 → K^+K^-η) = \mathrm{[-1.4 ± 3.3 (stat) ± 1.1 (syst)]}\%$$ $$A_{CP} (D^0 → Φη) = \mathrm{[-1.9 ± 4.4 (stat) ± 0.6 (syst)]}\%$$ The results for $D^0 → π^+π^-η$ are a significant improvement over previous results. The branching fraction and A CP results for $D^0 → K^+K^-η$, and the ACP result for $D^0 → Φη$, are the first such measurements. No evidence for CP violation is found in any of these decays.

Search for the lepton flavor violating τ → 3μ decay in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for the lepton flavor violating τ → 3 μ decay is performed using proton-proton collision events at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2017–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 97.7 fb − 1 . Tau leptons produced in both heavy-flavor hadron and W boson decays are exploited in the analysis. No evidence for the decay is observed. The results of this search are combined with an earlier null result based on data collected in 2016 to obtain a total integrated luminosity of 131 fb − 1 . The observed (expected) upper limits on the branching fraction B ( τ → 3 μ ) at confidence levels of 90 and 95% are 2.9 × 10 − 8 ( 2.4 × 10 − 8 ) and 3.6 × 10 − 8 ( 3.0 × 10 − 8 ), respectively.

Nonperturbative Lorentz violation and field quantization

Regimes of Lorentz-violating effective field theories are studied in which departures from Lorentz symmetry are nonperturbative. Within a free toy theory exhibiting Lorentz breakdown involving an operator of mass dimension three, it is shown that conventional methods suffice to achieve field quantization and Fock-space construction. However, the absence of an observer-invariant energy-positivity condition requires physical input beyond the free theory for the unambiguous identification of a ground state. An investigation of the role of thermodynamics in this context is instigated.

A violation of global symmetries from replica wormholes and the fate of black hole remnants

We show that the presence of replica wormholes in the Euclidean path integral of gravity leads to a non-perturbative violation of charge conservation for any global symmetry present in the low-energy description of quantum gravity. Explicitly, we compute the scattering probability between different charged states in several two-dimensional models of quantum gravity and find a non-vanishing answer. Here, this suggests that the set of all charged states is typically over-complete, which has drastic consequences for the fate of black hole remnants that could carry a global symmetry charge. In the holographic context, we argue that the presence of such a symmetry in the effective description of the bulk should appear on the boundary as an emergent global symmetry after ensemble averaging.

Direct CP violation and the ΔI=1/2 rule in K→ππ decay from the standard model

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the Δ I = 1 / 2 , K → π π decay amplitude A 0 and ϵ ' , the measure of direct C P violation in K → π π decay, improving our 2015 calculation [1] of these quantities. Both calculations were performed with physical kinematics on a 32 3 × 64 lattice with an inverse lattice spacing of a - 1 = 1.3784 ( 68 ) GeV . However, the current calculation includes nearly 4 times the statistics and numerous technical improvements allowing us to more reliably isolate the π π ground state and more accurately relate the lattice operators to those defined in the standard model. We find Re ( A 0 ) = 2.99 ( 0.32 ) ( 0.59 ) × 10 - 7 GeV and Im ( A 0 ) = - 6.98 ( 0.62 ) ( 1.44 ) × 10 - 11 GeV , where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The former agrees well with the experimental result Re ( A 0 ) = 3.3201 ( 18 ) × 10 - 7 GeV . These results for A 0 can be combined with our earlier lattice calculation of A 2 [2] to obtain Re ( ϵ ' / ϵ ) = 21.7 ( 2.6 ) ( 6.2 ) ( 5.0 ) × 10 - 4 , where the third error represents omitted isospin breaking effects, and Re ( A 0 ) / Re ( A 2 ) = 19.9 ( 2.3 ) ( 4.4 ) . The first agrees well with the experimental result of Re ( ϵ ' / ϵ ) = 16.6 ( 2.3 ) × 10 - 4 . A comparison of the second with the observed ratio Re ( A 0 ) / Re ( A 2 ) = 22.45 ( 6 ) , demonstrates the standard model origin of this “ Δ I = 1 / 2 rule” enhancement.

Direct C P violation in charmless three-body decays of B ± mesons

Measurements of CP asymmetries in charmless three-body decays of B ± mesons are reported using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.9 fb –1 . The previously observed CP asymmetry in B ± →π ± ⁢K + K – decays is confirmed, and CP asymmetries are observed with a significance of more than five standard deviations in the B ± →π ± π + ⁢π – and B ± →K ± ⁢K + ⁢K – decays, while the CP asymmetry of B ± →K ± ⁢π + ⁢π – decays is confirmed to be compatible with zero. The distributions of these asymmetries are also studied as a function of the three-body phase space and suggest contributions from rescattering and resonance interference processes. An indication of the presence of the decays B ± →π ± ⁢χ c⁢0 ⁡(1⁢P) in both B ± →π ± π + ⁢π – and B ± →π ± ⁢K + ⁢K – decays is observed, as is CP violation involving these amplitudes.

Search for direct CP violation in charged charmless B→PV decays

Measurements of C P asymmetry in charmless B → P V decays are presented, where P and V denote a pseudoscalar and a vector meson, respectively. Five different B → P V decays from four final states, B ± → π ± π + π - , B ± → K ± π + π - , B ± → K ± K + K - and B ± → π ± K + K - are analyzed. The measurements are based on a method that does not require full amplitude analyses, and are performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by LHCb between 2015 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.9 fb - 1 . In the π + π - P -wave, in the region dominated by the B ± → ρ ( 770 ) 0 K ± decay, a C P asymmetry of A C P = + 0.150 ± 0.019 ± 0.011 is measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the first observation of C P violation in this process. For the other four decay channels, in regions dominated by the B ± → ρ ( 770 ) 0 π ± , B ± → K ( ¯ ) * ( 892 ) 0 π ± , B ± → K ( ¯ ) * ( 892 ) 0 K ± and B ± → Φ ( 1020 ) K ± decays, C P asymmetries in the P -wave compatible with zero are measured.

Revisiting 𝐶 and 𝐶⁢𝑃 violation in 𝜂 → 𝜋 + 𝜋 - ⁢𝜋 0 decay

The decay 𝜂 → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝜋 0 is an ideal process in which to study flavor-conserving 𝐶 and 𝐶⁢𝑃 violation beyond the Standard Model. We deduce the 𝐶- and 𝐶⁢𝑃-odd quark operators that contribute to 𝜂 → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝜋 0 originating from the mass-dimension-six Standard Model effective field theory. The corresponding hadron-level operators that generate a nonvanishing 𝐼 = 0 amplitude at order 𝑝 6 in the chiral effective theory are presented for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, in addition to the leading-order operators ascribed to the 𝐼 = 2 final state. By fitting the KLOE-2 and the most recent BESIII experimental data, we determine the coefficients of the lowest-order 𝐼 = 0 and 𝐼 = 2 amplitudes and estimate the potential new physics energy scale. We also perform an impact study of the future 𝜂 → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝜋 0 experiments.

Search for 𝐶⁢𝑃-Violating Neutrino Nonstandard Interactions with the NOvA Experiment

This Letter reports a search for charge-parity (𝐶⁢𝑃) symmetry violating nonstandard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter using the NOvA Experiment, and examines their effects on the determination of the standard oscillation parameters. Data from 𝜈 𝜇 ⁡($\bar{𝜈}$ 𝜇 ) → 𝜈 𝜇 ⁡($\bar{𝜈}$ 𝜇 ) and 𝜈 𝜇 ⁡($\bar{𝜈}$ 𝜇 ) → 𝜈 𝑒 ⁡( $\bar{𝜈}$ 𝑒 ) oscillation channels are used to measure the effect of the NSI parameters 𝜖 𝑒⁢𝜇 and 𝜖 𝑒⁢𝜏 . With 90% CL the magnitudes of the NSI couplings are constrained to be |𝜖 𝑒⁢𝜇 | ≲0.3 and |𝜖 𝑒⁢𝜏 | ≲ 0.4. A degeneracy at |𝜖 𝑒⁢𝜏 | ≈ 1.8 is reported, and we observe that the presence of NSI limits sensitivity to the standard 𝐶⁢𝑃 phase 𝛿 𝐶⁢𝑃 .
