Development and Implementation of a Nuclear and Criticality Safety Engineering Pipeline Course at North Carolina State University

Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, owner of both the criticality safety program and accident analysis qualification at Savannah River Site, experienced increasing difficulty in recruiting, training, and retaining key talent areas. In an effort to curb attrition, provide a talent base to recruit from, and introduce potential new hires to niche subject areas, a pipeline college course was developed for a regional university. The course introduces a variety of topic areas particular to criticality safety and nuclear safety at Department of Energy nonreactor nuclear facilities. Several administrative and developmental hurdles were encountered before the course was successfully initiated at North Carolina State University in fall 2024.

High-Order Multipole and Binary Love Number Universal Relations

Using a data set of approximately 2 million phenomenological equations of state consistent with observational constraints, we construct new equation-of-state-insensitive universal relations that exist between the multipolar tidal deformability parameters of neutron stars, Λ l , for several high-order multipoles (l = 5,6,7,8), and we consider finite-size effects of these high-order multipoles in waveform modeling. We also confirm the existence of a universal relation between the radius of the 1.4M ⊙ NS, R 1.4 and the reduced tidal parameter of the binary, Λ˜, and the chirp mass. We extend this relation to a large number of chirp masses and to the radii of isolated NSs of different mass M, R M . We find that there is an optimal value of M for every M such that the uncertainty in the estimate of R M is minimized when using the relation. We discuss the utility and implications of these relations for the upcoming LIGO O4 run and third-generation detectors.

The Mira-Titan Universe. III. Emulation of the Halo Mass Function

We construct an emulator for the halo mass function over group and cluster mass scales for a range of cosmologies, including the effects of dynamical dark energy and massive neutrinos. The emulator is based on the recently completed Mira-Titan Universe suite of cosmological N-body simulations. The main set of simulations spans 111 cosmological models with 2.1 Gpc boxes. We extract halo catalogs in the redshift range z = [0.0, 2.0] and for masses M-200c >= 10(13)M(circle dot)/h. The emulator covers an eight-dimensional hypercube spanned by {Omega(m)h(2), Omega(b)h(2), Omega(nu)h(2), sigma(8), h, n(s), w(0), w(a)}; spatial flatness is assumed. We obtain smooth halo mass functions by fitting piecewise second-order polynomials to the halo catalogs and employ Gaussian process regression to construct the emulator while keeping track of the statistical noise in the input halo catalogs and uncertainties in the regression process. For redshifts z less than or similar to 1, the typical emulator precision is better than 2% for 10(13)-10(14)M(circle dot)/h and <10<^> M similar or equal to 101(circle dot)(54)/h. For comparison, fitting functions using the traditional universal form for the halo mass function can be biased at up to 30% at M similar or equal to 10(144)M(circle dot)/h for z = 0. Our emulator is publicly available at https://github.com/SebastianBocquet/MiraTitanHMFemulator.

A Universal Augmentation Framework for Long-Range Electrostatics in Machine Learning Interatomic Potentials

Most current machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) rely on short-range approximations, without explicit treatment of long-range electrostatics. To address this, we recently developed the Latent Ewald Summation (LES) method, which infers electrostatic interactions, polarization, and Born effective charges (BECs), just by learning from energy and force training data. Here, in this study, we present LES as a standalone library, compatible with any short-range MLIP, and demonstrate its integration with methods such as MACE, NequIP, Allegro, CACE, CHGNet, and UMA. We benchmark LES-enhanced models on distinct systems, including bulk water, polar dipeptides, and gold dimer adsorption on defective substrates, and show that LES not only captures correct electrostatics but also improves accuracy. Additionally, we scale LES to large and chemically diverse data by training MACELES-OFF on the SPICE set containing molecules and clusters, making a universal MLIP with electrostatics for organic systems, including biomolecules. MACELES-OFF is more accurate than its short-range counterpart (MACE-OFF) trained on the same data set, predicts dipoles and BECs reliably, and has better descriptions of bulk liquids. By enabling efficient long-range electrostatics without directly training on electrical properties, LES paves the way for electrostatic foundation MLIPs.

CROCUS Air Quality Dataset from the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), July 2024

This dataset was collected by the measurement system in the Atmosphere, Climate, and Ecosystems (ACE) Lab at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) from July 12 to July 31, 2024, as part of the Community Research on Climate and Urban Science (CROCUS) Urban Integrated Field Laboratory (UIFL) project, led by Argonne National Laboratory. To enhance understanding of urban air quality dynamics in Chicago, and as part of the CROCUS 2024 Urban Canyon Intensive Observation Period (IOP), several instruments were set up to provide continuous measurements of air quality parameters in Chicago during July 2024. These measurements cover both aerosols and gas-phase species. It focuses on particle size distribution (2.5–478 nm) measured by two Scanning Mobility Particle Sizers (SMPS) at a 4-min resolution, total particle number concentrations at a 1-s resolution, and chemical composition from a High-Resolution Time-of-Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) at a 1-min resolution. Key gas-phase species, including NO, NO₂, SO₂, and O₃, are measured at a 1-min resolution, along with high-resolution NO and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) data from a Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer (CIMS). Volatile organic compound (VOC) data for toluene, isoprene, and benzene are provided by a GC-PID with a time resolution of 25 minutes. The data are formatted as NetCDF (.nc) files, making them easily accessible using common software such as MATLAB, R, and Python. Each parameter is stored in an individual dataset, which includes detailed instrument information in the header, as well as the corresponding sample start time and concentration/distribution data for each sample.

Targeted Adjusting Molecular Arrangement in Organic Solar Cells via a Universal Solid Additive

The incorporation of solid additive has been considered as an effective strategy for developing organic photovoltaics with multi-components, which is independent of dynamics, playing unique roles in morphology adjustment. However, their complex working mechanisms involving specific chemical structures are selective to material systems, hence limiting their university and flexibility in application. Herein, an inert small-molecular compound naphtho[1,2-c:5,6-c′]bis[1,2,5]thiadiazole (NT) is introduced into the bulk-heterojunction blend as the solid additive, which can function with various material systems and solvents, depending on its simple π-conjugated structure and S⋯N interaction for adjusting molecular alignment. It is interesting to note that the introduced NT can not only improve device performance, but also simplify complicated pre- or post-processing methods, reduce impact from batch-to-batch differences, construct sufficient energy transfer channel as well as improve device stability. The resulting devices based on PTzBI-dF:Y6-BO system show an impressive power conversion efficiency of 17.4% with obviously enhanced T 80 lifetime of >1200 h. These findings provide useful guidelines for exploring potential universal solid additives benefitting toward commercial application.

Quantum mechanics and observers for gravity in a closed universe

Recent arguments based on the quantum extremal surface formula or the gravitational path integral have given fairly compelling evidence that the Hilbert space of quantum gravity in a closed universe is one-dimensional and real. How can this be consistent with the complexity of our own experiences? In this paper we propose that the experiences of any observer Ob in a closed universe can be approximately described by a quantum mechanical theory with a Hilbert space whose dimension is roughly e S Ob , where S Ob is the number of degrees of freedom of Ob. Moreover we argue that the errors in this description are exponentially small in S Ob . We give evidence for this proposal by incorporating it into the gravitational path integral and the coding interpretation of holography in simple models and seeing that it works, and we explain how similar effects arise in black hole physics in appropriate circumstances.

Universal fine grained asymptotics of free and weakly coupled quantum field theory

We give a rigorous proof that in any free quantum field theory with a finite group global symmetry G, on a compact spatial manifold, at sufficiently high energy, the density of states ρ α (E) for each irreducible representation α of G obeys a universal formula as conjectured by Harlow and Ooguri. We further prove that this continues to hold in a weakly coupled quantum field theory, given an appropriate scaling of the coupling with temperature. This generalizes similar results that were previously obtained in (1 + 1)-D to higher spacetime dimension. We discuss the role of averaging in the density of states, and we compare and contrast with the case of continuous group G, where we prove a universal, albeit different, behavior.

Universal behavior of entanglement entropies in interface CFTs from general holographic spacetimes

In previous work universal behavior was conjectured for the behavior of the logarithmic terms in the entanglement entropy of intervals in 1+1 dimensional interface conformal field theories (ICFTs). These putative universal terms were exhibited both in free field theories as well as a large class of holographic models. In this work we demonstrate that this same behavior in fact is realized in any holographic ICFT, significantly strengthening the case for the conjecture.

Universality in logarithmic temperature corrections to near-extremal rotating black hole thermodynamics in various dimensions

The low-temperature thermodynamics of near-extremal rotating black holes has recently been revisited to incorporate one-loop contributions that are dominant in this regime. We discuss these quantum corrections to the gravitational path integral for asymptotically Anti de-Sitter black holes in four and five dimensions. In four dimensions we explicitly consider Kerr-AdS 4 , Kerr-Newman-AdS 4 and the rotating black hole in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 gauged supergravity with two scalars and two electric charges turned on. In five dimensions we explicitly address the asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black hole and the Kerr-AdS5 black hole. In every case we find that tensor modes contribute $\frac{3}{2}$logT Hawking to the low-temperature thermodynamics. We identify the root cause of this universality in two facts: (i) the universal presence of a SL(2, $\mathbb{R}$) subgroup of isometries in the near-horizon geometry and (ii) a set of cancellations in the Lichnerowicz operator. We show that these two conditions hold for near-extremal black holes in asymptotically flat and asymptotically AdS spacetimes of various dimensions.

A universal inequality on the unitary 2D CFT partition function

We prove the conjecture proposed by Hartman, Keller and Stoica (HKS) [1]: the grand-canonical free energy of a unitary 2D CFT with a sparse spectrum below the scaling dimension $\frac{c}{12}$ + ϵ and below the twist $\frac{c}{12}$ is universal in the large c limit for all β L β R ≠ 4π 2 . The technique of the proof allows us to derive a one-parameter (with parameter α ∈ (0, 1]) family of universal inequalities on the unitary 2D CFT partition function with general central charge c ⩾ 0, using analytical modular bootstrap. We derive an iterative equation for the domain of validity of the inequality on the (β L , β R ) plane. The infinite iteration of this equation gives the boundary of maximal-validity domain, which depends on the parameter α in the inequality.

Universal lifting in the D1-D5 CFT

We consider D1-D5-P states in the untwisted sector of the D1-D5 orbifold CFT where one copy of the seed CFT has been excited with a left-moving superconformal primary. Despite being BPS at the orbifold point, such states can ‘lift’ as the theory is deformed away from this point in moduli space. We compute this lifting at second order in the deformation parameter for arbitrary left-moving dimension h of this class of states. This result displays an interesting universality since the lifting does not depend on the details of the superconformal primary; it depends only on the dimension. In the large-dimension limit the lift scales as $\sqrt{h}$; it is observed that such scaling appears to be a universal property of the lift of D1-D5-P states.

Proof of the universal density of charged states in QFT

We prove a recent conjecture by Harlow and Ooguri concerning a universal formula for the charged density of states in QFT at high energies for global symmetries associated with finite groups. An equivalent statement, based on the entropic order parameter associated with charged operators in the thermofield double state, was proven in a previous article by Casini, Huerta, Pontello, and the present author. Here we describe how the statement about the entropic order parameter arises, and how it gets transformed into the universal density of states. The use of the certainty principle, relating the entropic order and disorder parameters, is crucial for the proof. We remark that although the immediate application of this result concerns charged states, the origin and physics of such density can be understood by looking at the vacuum sector only. We also describe how these arguments lie at the origin of the so-called entropy equipartition in these type of systems, and how they generalize to QFT’s on non-compact manifolds.
