Intrinsically Chiral Twist‐Bend Nematogens: Interplay of Molecular and Structural Chirality in the N TB Phase

Abstract Non‐symmetric lactate‐based chiral liquid crystal dimers containing an odd‐membered spacer are shown to exhibit a chiral twist‐bend nematic phase which is stable on cooling to room temperature. A comparison of racemic and optically pure materials reveals that the pitch length in the N* TB phase is not influenced by molecular chirality, whereas the nematic‐twist‐bend nematic transition temperature is increased.

Tailored (La 0.2 Pr 0.2 Nd 0.2 Tb 0.2 Dy 0.2 ) 2 Ce 2 O 7 as a Highly Active and Stable Nanocatalyst for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Abstract Designing highly active and robust catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction is key to improving the overall efficiency of the water splitting reaction. It has been previously demonstrated that evaporation induced self‐assembly (EISA) can be used to synthesize highly porous and high surface area cerate‐based fluorite nanocatalysts, and that substitution of Ce with 50% rare earth (RE) cations significantly improves electrocatalyst activity. Herein, the defect structure of the best performing nanocatalyst in the series are further explored, Nd 2 Ce 2 O 7 , with a combination of neutron diffraction and neutron pair distribution function analysis. It is found that Nd 3 + cation substitution for Ce in the CeO 2 fluorite lattice introduces higher levels of oxygen Frenkel defects and induces a partially reduced RE 1.5 Ce 1.5 O 5 +x phase with oxygen vacancy ordering. Significantly, it is demonstrated that the concentration of oxygen Frenkel defects and improved electrocatalytic activity can be further enhanced by increasing the compositional complexity (number of RE cations involved) in the substitution. The resulting novel compositionally‐complex fluorite– (La 0.2 Pr 0.2 Nd 0.2 Tb 0.2 Dy 0.2 ) 2 Ce 2 O 7 is shown to display a low OER overpotential of 210 mV at a current density of 10 mAcm −2 in 1M KOH, and excellent cycling stability. It is suggested that increasing the compositional complexity of fluorite nanocatalysts expands the ability to tailor catalyst design.

Syntheses and Crystal Structures of Rare-Earth Oxyapatites Ca 2 RE 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 (RE = Pr, Tb, Ho, Tm)

Four different rare-earth oxyapatites of Ca 2 RE 8 (SiO 4 ) 6 O 2 (RE = Pr, Tb, Ho, Tm) were synthesized using a solution-based method followed by drying, calcination, and high-temperature sintering in air. X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy were performed on the synthesized oxyapatites. Here, the RE oxyapatites crystallize in the hexagonal space group P6 3 /m with similar unit cell parameters, increasing linearly with larger RE cations. The unit cell volumes increase linearly whereas the densities decrease nonlinearly with larger RE cations. Raman spectra showed intense bands of the symmetric bending and stretching modes of SiO 4 at ~ 400 and 860 cm -1 regions, respectively. The bands generally shifted to higher frequencies with smaller RE cations in the structures.

A heavy-ion production channel of 149 Tb via 63 Cu bombardment of 89 Y

We report the radionuclide 149 Tb (t 1/2 = 4.1 h) is a potential theranostic isotope which can simultaneously be used for targeted-alpha-particle therapy and positron-emission tomography. Feasibility experiments were performed to test a near-symmetric heavy-ion reaction of 63 Cu bombardment on monoisotopic 89 Y. The indirect reaction was studied to avoid isomer production. Offline gamma spectroscopy was used to quantify thick-target physical yields and experimental results show modest agreement to the fusion-evaporation code PACE4. A near-symmetric fission yield was also observed.

Modification of magnetic ground state in Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 by thermal annealing

In this work, we have investigated the thermal annealing effect on the physical properties of an AlB 2 -type ternary intermetallic compound, Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 , that undergoes spin freezing behaviour coexisting with spatially limited antiferromagnetic phase below 9.9 K in as-cast form. Thermal annealing effect is found to result in considerable changes in the magnetic ground state properties of the system. Though only one magnetic transition around 9.9 K is observed for as-cast compound, the annealed sample exhibits two distinct magnetic transitions; one around T N ~ 13.5 K and another around T f ~ 4 K. The magnetization measurements and zero field neutron diffraction study reveal that the high temperature transition is antiferromagnetic type, though of limited correlation length, while the low temperature transition corresponds to spin freezing behaviour. The ac susceptibility and heat capacity studies also confirm the existence of frustrated cluster glass state at lower temperature than the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. Additionally, ac susceptibility data exhibits signature of an additional peak in the even lower temperature region (at 2.2 K for zero frequency) that tends to shift in opposite direction with frequency in contrast to that observed for conventional glassy transitions. The change in intrinsic local structural disorder of Ni and Si ions associated with annealing has been argued to be responsible for the different magnetic behaviour in as-cast and annealed samples.

Crystal Growth and Elemental Homogeneity of the Multicomponent Rare-Earth Garnet (Lu 1/6 Y 1/6 Ho 1/6 Dy 1/6 Tb 1/6 Gd 1/6 ) 3 Al 5 O 12

We report high-entropy aluminum garnets were grown as bulk single crystals using the micro-pulling-down method, taking the synthesis of complex ceramics a step further from the conventional preparation of polycrystalline materials. We studied the effects of growth parameters on the elemental distribution in high optical quality crystals of (Lu 1/6 Y 1/6 Ho 1/6 Dy 1/6 Tb 1/6 Gd 1/6 ) 3 Al 5 O 12 containing six cations (yttrium and rare-earths) taken in equimolar amounts. A single garnet structure was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. Electron microprobe measurements were obtained to correlate the radial distribution of rare-earth elements with pulling rates and molten zone height. The nature of the elemental distribution in the radial direction was associated with ionic radius: smaller rare-earths concentrated in the center of the crystal, while larger rare-earths segregated toward the outer edge of the cylindrical crystal. Faster pulling rates led to a flattening of the concentration profiles toward the nominal concentration, promoting a more homogeneous radial elemental distribution, while varying the molten zone height did not have a significant effect. The demonstrated success with crystal growth enables the practical availability of single crystals of multicomponent aluminum garnets for further discovery of new phenomena and applications.

Intricate Magnetic Landscape in Antiferromagnetic Kagome Metal TbTi 3 Bi 4 and Interplay with Ln 2– x Ti 6+ x Bi 9 (Ln: Tb···Lu) Shurikagome Metals

Here we present the discovery and characterization of the kagome metal TbTi 3 Bi 4 in tandem with a new series of compounds, the Ln 2–x Ti 6+x Bi 9 (Ln: Tb–Lu) shurikagome metals. We previously reported on the growth of the LnTi 3 Bi 4 (Ln: La–Gd 3+ , Eu 2+ , Yb 2+ ) family, a chemically diverse and exfoliable series of kagome metals with complex and highly anisotropic magnetism. However, unlike the La–Gd analogs, TbTi 3 Bi 4 cannot be synthesized by our previous methodology due to phase competition with crystals of Ln 2–x Ti 6+x Bi 9 (x ~ 1.7–1.2). Here we discuss the phase competition between the LnTi 3 Bi 4 and Ln 2–x Ti 6+x Bi 9 families, helping to frame the difficulty in synthesizing LnTi 3 Bi 4 compounds with small Ln species and providing a strategy to circumvent the formation of Ln 2–x Ti 6+x Bi 9 . Detailed characterization of the magnetic and electronic transport properties on single crystals of TbTi 3 Bi 4 reveals a highly complex landscape of magnetic phases arising from an antiferromagnetic ground state. A series of metamagnetic transitions creates at least 5 unique magnetic phase pockets, including a 1/3 and 2/3 magnetization plateau. Further, the system exhibits an intimate connection between the magnetism and magnetotransport, exhibiting sharp switching from positive (+40%) to negative magnetoresistance (–50%). Like the LnTi 3 Bi 4 kagome metals, the Ln 2–x Ti 6+x Bi 9 family exhibits quasi-2D networks of titanium and chains of rare earth. Finally, we present the structures and some basic magnetic properties of the Ln 2–x Ti 6+x Bi 9 family alongside our characterization of the newly discovered TbTi 3 Bi 4 .

Structure-Based Analysis of Semisynthetic Anti-TB Rufomycin Analogues

This study employed structural information from cocrystals of rufomycin 4 (1a) and caseinolytic protein C1 (ClpC1)-NTD-wt to guide design and semisynthesis of rufomycin analogues, evaluate their antituberculosis (TB) biological profiles, and establish structure–activity relationships (SAR). Covering three regions of interest (ROIs, A–C) as modification sites, 14 of the 30 semisynthetic analogues (2–31) showed similar or improved MICs relative to the main natural precursors, rufomycins 4/6 (1a/b). Compounds 5 and 27 exhibited up to 10-fold enhanced potency against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) in vitro, with MIC values of 1.9 and 1.4 nM, respectively. Evaluation of ClpC1-binding properties used existing ClpC1-NTD complexes with rufomycin 4 (PDB: 6cn8) and ecumicin (PDB: 6pbs) as references. The newly reported X-ray ClpC1-NTD cocrystal structure of 11 (syn. But4-Cl) revealed significant conformational effects involving the side chains of certain amino acids of the heptapeptide and confirmed the importance of ROIs A–C for medicinal chemistry efforts. Observed interactions of the N-terminal tail of ClpC1 with the rufomycin analogues vs ecumicin explains their different modes of inactivating the ClpC1/P1/P2 homeostatic machinery. Collectively, the observations inform further SAR optimization strategies for the rufomycin class of antibiotics and complement our understanding of their mode of action.

Magnetic structure and properties of the compositionally complex perovskite (Y 0.2 La 0.2 Pr 0.2 Nd 0.2 Tb 0.2 )MnO 3

Large configurational disorder in compositionally complex ceramics can lead to unique functional properties that deviate from traditional rules of alloy mixing. In recent years, compositionally complex oxides (CCOs) have shown intriguing magnetic behavior including long-range order, enhanced magnetic exchange couplings, and mixed phase magnetic structures. This work focuses on how large local spin disorder affects magnetic ordering in a CCO. Specifically, we investigated the A-site alloyed perovskite, (Y 0.2 La 0.2 Pr 0.2 Nd 0.2 Tb 0.2 )MnO 3 , or (5A)MnO 3 , using a combination of bulk magnetometry, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and temperature-dependent neutron diffraction. The five A-site ions have an average spin and ionic radius nearly equal to that of Nd 3+ ions, which minimizes structural distortions and allows for an understanding of the local spin disorder effects through a direct comparison with NdMnO 3 . Our magnetometry data show that (5A)MnO 3 exhibits two distinct phase transitions associated with the A-site and B-site sublattices, as seen in NdMnO 3 , as well as the presence of domain pinning and exchange bias at low temperature, suggesting a mixed phase magnetic ground state, as seen in other magnetic CCOs. Neutron powder diffraction shows clear long-range antiferromagnetic ordering below 67 K and refines to a Pn'ma' magnetic structure at low temperature, in excellent agreement with the well-studied behavior of NdMnO 3 . The two most notable differences in (5A)MnO 3 magnetism apparent from our data are a slight suppression of the B-site ordering temperature, which is explained by a smaller Mn–O–Mn bond angle in (5A)MnO 3 than NdMnO 3 , and the presence of a magnetic susceptibility transition above the B-site ordering, which could indicate the formation of a cluster glass but requires further study. Finally, this work demonstrates a general method of isolated investigation of size and spin disorder in CCOs and motivates future work using local structure probes to better understand the effects of nanoscale clustering and local spin disorder in magnetic CCOs.

Determination of single-crystal elastic moduli of Li RE F 4 ( RE =Y, Gd, and Tb) by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy

The tetragonal fluoro-scheelite Li RE F 4 compounds (RE = rare earth) have been shown to exhibit a variety of useful optical and magnetic properties. While LiYF 4 has been widely studied, many of the fundamental thermodynamic properties of other members of this family remain unknown. Here, we report the complete elastic tensors (C ij ) of single-crystalline LiYF 4 , LiTbF 4 , and LiGdF 4 using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT). Here we compare the results for LiYF 4 with prior experimental results using time-of-flight ultrasound methods. This is the first report, however, of the experimental elastic tensors of LiTbF 4 and LiGdF 4 . The present results point to a softening of the elastic moduli of the Li RE F 4 system when Y is replaced by the larger ionic radius of Tb or Gd. Furthermore, we find that just 0.3% doping with Nd on the Y site also leads to a slight softening of the moduli. The variation of the elastic moduli as a function of temperature up to 216°C was also measured. A nearly linear softening of all seven independent elastic moduli was observed with increasing temperature. Phonon dispersions and phonon density of states obtained by DFT support the experimental finding of a significantly higher sound velocity due to lighter Y atoms in LiYF 4 , as compared to heavier LiTbF 4 and LiGdF 4 .

Studies on magnetocaloric effect of Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 compound

A comparative study has been carried out on the magnetocaloric properties of as-cast and annealed Tb 2 Ni 0.90 Si 2.94 intermetallic compound. While the as-cast material exhibits ferromagnetic cluster-glass behaviour below 9.9 K coexisting with antiferromagnetic (AFM) interaction, the annealed system shows AFM ordering below 13.5 K and spin freezing occurs below 4 K. The compound exhibits moderate magnetocaloric performance with maximum isothermal entropy changes (–ΔS M ) 8.8 and 10.9 J kg –1 K –1 , relative cooling power (RCP) 306 and 365 J kg –1 , along with adiabatic temperature change (ΔT ad ) 5.5 and 8.15 K for 70 kOe magnetic field change in as-cast and annealed forms, respectively. The estimated magnetic entropy change is found to be larger for annealed sample in comparison to that of as-cast analogue. However, the full width at half maxima (FWHM) of –ΔS M (T) behaviour is larger in as-cast compound due to the presence of inherent structural disorder which reduces with thermal annealing. A positive isothermal entropy change (–ΔS M ) and adiabatic temperature change (ΔT ad ) is observed for the as-cast compound in the measured field and temperature region. In contrast, the annealed system exhibits inverse magnetocaloric effect in the low field and temperature region where AFM interactions dominate. Magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is used as a tool to establish a subtle correlation between the observed magnetocaloric effect and the reported magnetic properties of the system.

Two methods to study inelastic neutron-scattering measurements based on ω n (q) versus S(q, ω) applied to the magnetic open honeycomb lattice Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9

This work describes two methods to fit the inelastic neutron-scattering spectrum S(q, ω) with wavevector q and frequency ω. The common and well-established method extracts the experimental spin-wave branches ω n (q) from the measured spectra S(q, ω) and then minimizes the difference between the observed and predicted frequencies. When n branches of frequencies are predicted but the measured frequencies overlap to produce only m < n branches, the weighted average of the predicted frequencies must be compared to the observed frequencies. A penalty is then exacted when the width of the predicted frequencies exceeds the width of the observed frequencies. The second method directly compares the measured and predicted intensities S(q, ω) over a grid {q i , ω j } in wavevector and frequency space. After subtracting background noise from the observed intensities, the theoretical intensities are scaled by a simple wavevector-dependent function that reflects the instrumental resolution. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of each approach are demonstrated by studying the open honeycomb material Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9 .

Persistent short-range spin fluctuation in rare-earth substituted square lattice Sr 2 ⁢Ir 0.89 ⁢Tb 0.11⁢ O 4

Sr 2 ⁢IrO 4 , a prototypical 𝐽 eff = 1/2 square lattice system, is widely studied for novel physics. While transition metal substitution effects are well explored, rare-earth doping at the Ir 4+ site is less explored. Here we present a detailed magnetization and neutron diffraction study on Sr 2 ⁢Ir 1−𝑥 ⁢Tb 𝑥 ⁢O 4 (𝑥 = 0.11). The system tends to adopt an in-plane antiferromagnetic configuration with a “++++” stacking sequence. Strong spin fluctuations persist down to the lowest measured temperature, consistent with the concave shape order parameter. A pronounced magnetic diffuse scattering rod develops along the 𝐿 direction at low temperature, indicating the formation of short-range magnetic correlations with a characteristic length of ∼ 24⁢(2) ⁢Å. In conclusion, this work provides a new pathway to exotic quantum phases in the strongly spin-orbit-coupled iridates.

Robust Kagome Electronic Structure in Topological Quantum Magnets XMn 6 Sn 6 (X = Dy, Tb, Gd, Y)

Crystal geometry can greatly influence the emergent properties of quantum materials. As an example, the kagome lattice is an ideal platform to study the rich interplay between topology, magnetism, and electronic correlation. In this work, combining high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculation, we systematically investigate the electronic structure of XMn 6 Sn 6 (X=Dy,Tb,Gd,Y) family compounds. Here, we observe the Dirac fermion and the flat band arising from the magnetic kagome lattice of Mn atoms. Interestingly, the flat band locates in the same energy region in all compounds studied, regardless of their different magnetic ground states and 4f electronic configurations. These observations suggest a robust Mn magnetic kagome lattice across the XMn 6 Sn 6 family, thus providing an ideal platform for the search for, and investigation of, new emergent phenomena in magnetic topological materials.

Structure of the (110) Ln ScO 3 ( Ln =Gd,Tb,Dy) surfaces

The surface reconstruction on the (110) surface of LnScO 3 (Ln=Gd,Tb,Dy) has been investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron diffraction coupled with higher-level density-functional theory methods. The experimental techniques generate constraints on the surface chemistry and structure that are used to inform the theoretical comparison of a number of potential surface structures. The resulting structure is then compared to experimental aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy results using multislice simulation. The surfaces of both single-crystalline substrates and hydrosauna synthesized nanoparticles exhibit a Sc-rich double layer with a Sc 3 O 4 termination.

Crystal structures and comparisons of huntite aluminum borates RE Al 3 (BO 3 ) 4 ( RE = Tb, Dy and Ho)

Three huntite-type aluminoborates of stoichiometry RE Al 3 (BO 3 ) 4 ( RE = Tb, Dy and Ho), namely, terbium/dysprosium/holmium trialuminium tetrakis(borate), were synthesized by slow cooling within a K 2 Mo 3 O 10 flux with spontaneous crystallization. The crystal structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) data. The synthesized borates are isostructural to the huntite [CaMg 3 (CO 3 ) 4 ] structure and crystallized within the trigonal R 32 space group. The structural parameters were compared to literature data of other huntite RE Al 3 (BO 3 ) 4 crystals within the R 32 space group. All three borates fit well into the trends calculated from the literature data. The unit-cell parameters and volumes increase linearly with larger RE cations whereas the densities decrease. All of the crystals studied were refined as inversion twins.

Crystal structures and comparisons of potassium rare-earth molybdates KRE(MoO 4 ) 2 (RE = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, and Lu)

Six potassium rare-earth molybdates KRE(MoO 4 ) 2 (RE = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, and Lu) were synthesized by flux-assisted growth in K 2 Mo 3 O 10 . The crystal structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The synthesized molybdates crystallize with the orthorhombic Pbcn space group (No. 60). Trendlines for unit-cell parameters were calculated using data from the current study. The unit-cell parameters a and c increase linearly whereas b decreases with larger RE cations, based on crystal radii. The unit-cell volumes increase linearly and the densities decrease linearly with larger RE cations. The average distances between the RE cations and the nearest O atoms increase with larger cations whereas the average distances of Mo—O and K—O do not show specific trends.
