Thermal and Deposition Modeling of the Canister Deposition Field Demonstration

This report provides initial thermal and deposition modeling results of the spent nuclear fuel (SNF) storage system planned for use in the Canister Deposition Field Demonstration (CDFD). The goal of the CDFD testing is to collect deposition measurements on the surface of the dry shielded canister (DSC) to aid in chloride-induced stress corrosion crack (CISCC) research. Ideally this testing will occur in a marine coastal environment but at the time of this report no official site has been selected. The CDFD will use the NUHOMS ® Advanced Horizontal Storage Module – High Seismic (AHSM-HS) with a 32PTH2 canister. The SNF assemblies will be replaced with electrical heaters. Canisters are currently being outfitted with these heaters and tested at Sandia National Laboratory (SNL). Thermal modeling was conducted to ensure the electrical heaters were representative of the temperature distribution found within a storage system with SNF. Deposition models were built to evaluate contaminant deposition on SNF canisters. The CDFD testing will help to validate these models, which will then be used to plan and inform on-site test programs and predictive models for the timing and occurrence of canister CISCC.

Blast Effects on Buildings (Final Report)

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has conservatively reduced the explosive safety standards suggested by the Small Quantities in Research Laboratories (SQRL) program testing by 60%. For this reason, further research into the detailed effects of small amounts of explosives in typically constructed rooms is needed in order to improve their factor of safety. The team was tasked with designing an experiment to investigate the effect of different variables on drywall under explosive blasts. In order to meet this objective, the team conducted a comprehensive literature review to gain an understanding of industry-standard construction practices and review previous tests conducted by the Army corp of engineers. Since the team used PBXN-5 rather than C4, as in SQRL, an initial shot was conducted to compare damage levels. From those results and the physical constraints of the testing chamber, the team redesigned multiple single-panel drywall frames to capture the entirety of the incurred damage. Proposed designs were narrowed down using a decision matrix. From the study of previous tests and literature review, variables were chosen that the team hypothesized to have an impact on drywall strength. The variables that were tested were chosen from the results of that work and specific variables the sponsor was interested in, and they were paint, humidity/moisture content, and explosive positioning relative to the studs. Detailed plans were made for each variable according to what conditions the team wanted to investigate. For humidity, this involved testing low, ambient, and high conditions by treating the panels in a chamber. Preliminary shots were performed to test the structural integrity of the frame and streamline the test diagnostics which involved a high-speed camera placed behind the drywall, outside of the chamber, and a pressure probe placed behind the drywall, inside the chamber. Once the instrumentation, diagnostics, and frame design were finalized, a quantitative damage criteria matrix was created to categorize the results of the main shot series. In conjunction with evidence from the high-speed video, the achieved damage levels indicate that high moisture content drywall is better able to withstand explosive blasts. Larger stud damage and lower drywall damage occurred when the explosive was located directly in front of a stud. Paint had no noticeable impact on strength. Ultimately, the team conducted a total of 17 tests, leaving the door open for future in-depth research into the impact of humidity.

Evaluation of Technologies for Destruction of LDR Organics in Hanford Tank Waste

Aqueous Hanford tank wastes contain soluble organics and some tanks contain small amounts (<100 mg/L) of organics that are regulated under the Land Disposal Restrictions (LDR) portions of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Most of these organics can be removed by evaporation, but some are not. Methods to destroy/remove organics that are regulated by the LDR section of the RCRA and that are not removed by evaporation may be needed if ambient temperature waste treatment processes are used to immobilize aqueous Hanford tank wastes. To identify viable and compatible organic removal or destruction pretreatment methods an evaluation was performed by a team of researchers. The team utilized a Systems Engineering Approach that examines all aspects of the technology, based on information available in the literature and the experience of the team members. That evaluation led to recommendations by the team to perform testing on technologies to determine efficacy in destroying organics in Hanford tank waste liquids. The primary technologies recommended are chemical oxidants, including permanganate, peroxymonosulfate or peroxydisulfate (PMS/PDS), hydrogen peroxide, and ozone. Ultraviolet light irradiation of the stream with a solid catalyst sorbent is also recommended for testing. A generalized description of the test program is also included.

Advanced Compressors for CO2-Based Power Cycles and Energy

Pumped thermal energy storage (PTES) is a cost-effective method for grid-scale, long-duration electrical energy storage (LDES). PTES uses a heat pump cycle to transfer thermal energy from a low temperature reservoir (LTR) to a high temperature reservoir (HTR), later using a heat engine cycle to reverse the process. A key component of the PTES system, the heat pump compressor, represents a significant driver to the cost, performance and operating characteristics of the PTES system. For grid-scale charging (>100 MW), traditional compressor scaling charts indicate that the operating conditions needed would be best served by a multistage axial compressor. While frame gas turbine compressors at these power ratings exist and operate at higher pressure ratios than needed for the CO2 PTES system, the inlet pressure and fluid density of this application exceed experience values. A conceptual design of a large-scale CO2 axial compressor was completed, including mean-line estimates of the compressor performance at full power conditions. The results of the conceptual design were used to refine the PTES cycle design, and updated operating conditions provided for further aero design optimization. A roughly one third scale of the first three stages of the 100 MW compressor was designed, built, and tested at relevant PTES charging conditions. Results of this test program are compared against high-resolution computational fluid dynamics models.
