Superconducting Magnetic Projectile Launcher

Proposed projectile launcher exploits Meissner effect to transfer much of kinetic energy of relatively massive superconducting plunger to smaller projectile, accelerating projectile to high speed. Because it operates with magnetic fields, launcher not limited by gas-expansion thermodynamics. Plunger energized mechanically and/or chemically, avoiding need for large electrical power supplies and energy-storage systems. Potential applications include launching of projectiles for military purposes and for scientific and industrial tests of hypervelocity impacts.

Superconducting magnet and fabrication method

A method of trapping a field in a block of superconductor material, includes providing (i) a block of material defining a bore, (ii) a high permeability core within the bore that defines a low reluctance path through the bore, (iii) a high permeability external structure on the exterior of the block of material that defines a low reluctance path between opposite ends of the core, and (iv) an electromagnet configured to apply a magnetic field around the high permeability core. The method proceeds by energizing the electromagnet to produce an applied magnetic field around the high permeability core, cooling the block of material sufficiently to render the block of material superconducting, de-energizing the electromagnet to result in a trapped magnetic field, and at least partially removing the low reluctance path defined by the core and the external structure in order to increase the magnetic flux density of the trapped magnetic field.

High-field superconducting nested coil magnet

Superconducting magnet, employed in conjunction with five types of superconducting cables in a nested solenoid configuration, produces total, central magnetic field strengths approaching 70 kG. The multiple coils permit maximum information on cable characteristics to be gathered from one test.

Mechanical characterization of Bi-2212 composite winding pack samples for high-field superconducting magnet design

Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O8−x (Bi-2212) multi-filament round wire is a high-temperature superconductor (HTS) capable of carrying high transport currents, which makes it suitable for high-field magnet applications. However, its weak Ag–Mg sheath leaves it vulnerable to mechanical stress, posing challenges for high-field magnet design. To better understand and improve mechanical stress management in Bi-2212 winding packs, we conducted an experimental study evaluating the axial stress–strain behavior of five winding pack configurations with varying insulation materials, reinforcement strategies, and construction quality. Using uniaxial tensile testing at 77 K, we measured Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio for each composition. Our results show that pure alumina braid insulation and co-wind reinforcements significantly enhance stiffness compared to aluminosilicate braids, with more than 2.5 times increased winding pack Young’s modulus. Rule of mixtures analysis further quantified the contribution of non-wire composite components to overall stiffness. These findings highlight the critical role of insulation material selection and reinforcement design in optimizing Bi-2212 coil performance under stress, providing a foundation for improved mechanical models and more reliable high-field HTS magnet designs.

Structural Analysis of Multilayer Tapered Canted-Cosine-Theta Superconducting Magnet for the Interaction Region of Electron Ion Collider

The electron ion collider (EIC) will collide high energy and highly polarized hadron and electron beams with luminosities up to 10 34 cm -2 s -1 . The magnet designs at the interaction region (IR) are challenging due to the close proximity of the hadron and electron beams. A canted cosine theta (CCT) quadrupole magnet was designed due to the space restrictions at the IR. The CCT magnet has a tapered aperture, which allows higher gradients at the interaction point (IP) side of the magnet. The tapered geometry makes the magnet not symmetrical along the axial direction. In conclusion, to validate the design in terms of the mechanical strength and the allowed deformations, a detailed structural mechanical analysis for the tapered CCT quadrupole magnet has been carried out using the finite element method (FEM) considering both the shrinking due to cool down and the electromagnetic force on the conductors.
