High pressure tube coupling requires no threads or flares

High pressure tube coupling connects to any straight, unthreaded, and unflared tubing end without deforming or damaging the tubing. The coupling grips the tube wall tightly between an external compression sleeve and an internal hollow mandrel. It is adaptable to standard screw fittings for test stand attachment.

Special tooling for joining tubing in place

The Saturn S-II stage and the Apollo spacecraft will include in their design and construction various pressurized tubing systems that will encounter service temperatures of 280° F to -423° F. Design engineering and reliability requirements and weight restrict ions have dictated new concepts to assure leak-tight joints for rocket engine fuel lines, pressurization systems, utility systems, and hydraulic systems. An investigation was initiated at North American Aviation, Inc., Space and Information Systems Division, utilizing the in-place automatically controlled miniaturized fusion-welding equipment originally developed by the Los Angeles Division of NAA and modified to meet the needs of Apollo and Saturn welded tubular systems. The objective was to make circumferential flanged weld joints in any position in 304L stainless for Saturn S-II and sleeve-type joints in 304L for Apollo. Inconel X, commercially pure titanium, 5052-0 aluminum, and 6061 T6 aluminum were also tested experimentally. Extensive environmental, static, and dynamic testing programs were conducted to determine the as-welded mechanical properties, design allowables, and reliability for the tube joints. This paper discusses both the experimental and production phases. Subsequently, the new tube welding process was approved and incorporated into manufacturing fabrication methods for tube joining.

Braze joint quality tested electromagnetically

Nondestructive electromagnetic method detects the extent of gold/nickel braze alloy flow in an engine injector sleeve-to-post joint. Voltage is induced in an inductor coil, along with a magnetically permeable material. The effects of altering the quantity of braze alloy present can then be measured.

Eutectic fuse provides current and thermal protection under high vibration

Eutectic fuses provide current and thermal protection to an electronic system and maintain this protection under high vibration environments. The fuses are embedded within heat shrinkable sleeving which provides positive closing action under the conditions of high current or temperature.

Stress corrosion

This article recounts briefly some of the more critical stress-corrosion failures that have been experienced at Marshall Space Flight Center and the corrective action taken. Some of the recent stress corrosion studies are described and preliminary results tabulated. Specific problems described are the H-1 Engine LOX dome, the pneumatic line fitting sleeve problems and the more recent problem with wave springs used on MF-flared tube fittings. The use of nitric oxide in preventing stress-corrosion failures in titanium tanks is also discussed.

Vacuum-jacketed transfer line installation technique

Rolling-type spacers in the form of steel balls retained in appropriate sleeves affixed at intervals to the exterior of the transfer line facilitate the installation of a vacuum-jacketed line. They act as standoffs to position the transfer line concentrically within the vacuum jacket line.

Tube swaging device uses explosive force

Tool joins a sleeve to a tube by explosive swaging, thus providing a leakproof, lightweight, and strong assembly. No new or different material is used in this method and therefore the thermal and galvanic properties are maintained.

Dual rate pressure relief valve

Pressure relief valve vents at a slow bleed rate at one pressure level and at a higher bleed rate at a higher pressure level. The value housing contains a sleeve, inlet port, outlet port, an orifice, a ball and seat arrangement, and a belleville spring diaphragm.

Novel terminal strips for transformers

Spacing tinned terminal leads between two tapes of woven glass fiber that are sandwich-bonded with pliable epoxy adhesive alleviates problems of taped leads pulling away from the transformer and shorting due to crossover of wires. Individual leads may or may not be enclosed in glass-fiber sleeves.

Fuse-holder concept expedites electronic component changes

Mounting circuit components in fuse holders facilitates component changing and extends component life with an estimated fifty percent saving of breadboard test time. Glass sleeves of the fuse holders allow easy component identification.

Foolproof quick-release locking pin

Locking pin can be withdrawn only when stress on the joint is negligible. Pin consists of a forward-pointing sleeve, a spring-loaded sliding handle, and a sliding plunger. Plunger movement controls installation and withdrawal of pin.

Testing of brazed and welded connections of stainless-steel tubing

Test procedures and results are given for three types of semipermanent sleeve-type connections for stainless-steel tubing. Subject to the limited resistances to corrosion and vibration, all three types are found to be suitable for extremes in reliability and environment, if given close control during manufacture.
