Future US energy demands based upon traditional consumption patterns lead to requirements which significantly exceed domestic supply

Energy consumption in the United States has risen in response to both increasing population and to increasing levels of affluence. Depletion of domestic energy reserves requires consumption modulation, production of fossil fuels, more efficient conversion techniques, and large scale transitions to non-fossile fuel energy sources. Widening disparity between the wealthy and poor nations of the world contributes to trends that increase the likelihood of group action by the lesser developed countries to achieve political and economic goals. The formation of anticartel cartels is envisioned.

Dispersion analysis for baseline reference mission 1

A dispersion analysis considering 3 sigma uncertainties (or perturbations) in platform, vehicle, and environmental parameters was performed for the baseline reference mission (BRM) 1 of the space shuttle orbiter. The dispersion analysis is based on the nominal trajectory for the BRM 1. State vector and performance dispersions (or variations) which result from the indicated 3 sigma uncertainties were studied. The dispersions were determined at major mission events and fixed times from lift-off (time slices) and the results will be used to evaluate the capability of the vehicle to perform the mission within a 3 sigma level of confidence and to determine flight performance reserves. A computer program is given that was used for dynamic flight simulations of the space shuttle orbiter.

STARPAHC - Operational findings

Delivery of quality health care to passengers of extended-mission spacecraft and to remote populations on earth (a major national problem) requires extending the knowledge and skills of the physician many kilometers distant from his physical location. The STARPAHC telemedicine system accomplishes this by using physician's assistants complemented with space technology in communications, data handling, and systems engineering. It is presently in operation and undergoing a 2-year evaluation on the Papago Indian Reservation, Arizona. Results have established its feasibility as a solution for remote area health care on earth, while providing information useful to the planners of advanced manned spacecraft missions.

Oblique wing transonic transport configuration development

Studies of transport aircraft designed for boom-free supersonic flight show the variable sweep oblique wing to be the most efficient configuration for flight at low supersonic speeds. Use of this concept leads to a configuration that is lighter, quieter, and more fuel efficient than symmetric aircraft designed for the same mission. Aerodynamic structural, weight, aeroelastic and flight control studies show the oblique wing concept to be technically feasible. Investigations are reported for wing planform and thickness, pivot design and weight estimation, engine cycle (bypass ratio), and climb, descent and reserve fuel. Results are incorporated into a final configuration. Performance, weight, and balance characteristics are evaluated. Flight control requirements are reviewed, and areas in which further research is needed are identified.

Space shuttle engineering and operations support: Dispersion analysis for the first orbital flight test (OFT-1) mission

A dispersion analysis considering 3—sigma (3σ) uncertainties (or perturbations) in platform, vehicle, and environmental parameters has been performed for the first orbital flight test (OFT-1) mission. The dispersion analysis is based on the nominal trajectory for the OFT-1 reference flight profile (RFP) which is described in Reference 1. The analysis has been performed to determine state vector and performance dispersions (or variations) which result from the indicated 3σ uncertainties. The dispersions are determined at major mission events and fixed times from Liftoff (time slices). The dispersion results will be used to evaluate the capability of the vehicle to perform the mission within a 3σ Level of confidence and to determine flight performance reserves. (FPR).

HEP - A semaphore-synchronized multiprocessor with central control

The paper describes the design concept of the Heterogeneous Element Processor (HEP), a system tailored to the special needs of scientific simulation. In order to achieve high-speed computation required by simulation, HEP features a hierarchy of processes executing in parallel on a number of processors, with synchronization being largely accomplished by hardware. A full-empty-reserve scheme of synchronization is realized by zero-one-valued hardware semaphores. A typical system has, besides the control computer and the scheduler, an algebraic module, a memory module, a first-in first-out (FIFO) module, an integrator module, and an I/O module. The architecture of the scheduler and the algebraic module is examined in detail.

Computer simulations of planetary accretion dynamics - Sensitivity to initial conditions

A computer simulation program which generates mature planetary systems using only Newtonian physics and accretion with unit sticking efficiency is examined. The dependence of the simulation on a variety of radial and vertical density distribution laws, on the ratio of gas to dust in the solar nebula, on the total nebular mass, and on the orbital eccentricity of the accreting grains is explored. To approach physically realistic models, these parameters are altered according to various empirically- and theoretically-suggested criteria. The program is found to generate many recognizable planetary systems, including multiple-star systems with accompanying planets; single stars surrounded only by asteroids; and systems with large Jovian planets, planets similar to Pluto, or objects of asteroidal mass, as well as the usual terrestrial planets. Planetary spacing in the simulation obeys a relation of the Titius Bode variety; in general, the number of planets per system is inversely proportional to the orbital eccentricity. Some reservations about the simulation program are expressed; however, it does support the idea of abundant and diverse planetary systems throughout the galaxy.

Microbial desulfurization of coal

Experiments indicate that several sulfur-oxidizing bacteria strains have been very efficient in desulfurizing coal. Process occurs at room temperature and does not require large capital investments of high energy inputs. Process may expand use of abundant reserves of high-sulfur bituminous coal, which is currently restricted due to environmental pollution. On practical scale, process may be integrated with modern coal-slurry transportation lines.
