DC liquid-metal MHD generator tested with cold NaK to determine power efficiency
A subscale model of a photovoltaic power system employing spectral splitting and 1000:1 concentration was fabricated and tested. The 10-in. aperture model demonstrated 15.5% efficiency with 86% of the energy produced by a GaAs solar cell and 14% of the energy produced by an Si cell. The calculated efficiency of the system using the same solar cells, but having perfect optics, would be approximately 20%. The model design, component measurements, test results, and mathematical model are presented.
A silicon double-drift IMPATT diode with high uniform doping levels was simulated. Simulation results show that it is possible for silicon IMPATT diodes to generate extremely high pulsed output power for frequencies above 100 GHz under high current-density operation. The highest output power matched to a 1-ohm load resistance obtained at 150 GHz is 37.7 W, with a dc current density of 200 kA/sq cm, although the calculated power conversion efficiency is low. It is also shown that the low-power conversion efficiency limits the diode's continuous wave power operation.

DC liquid-metal MHD generator tested with cold NaK to determine power efficiency
The power requirements and resultant power system performances of an aggressive Mars mission are characterized. The power system technologies discussed will support both cargo and piloted space transport vehicles as well as a six-person crew on the Martian surface for 600 days. The mission uses materials transported by cargo vehicles and materials produced using in-situ planetary feed stock to establish a life-support cache and infrastructure for the follow-on piloted lander. Numerous power system technical options are sized to meet the mission power requirements using conventional and solar, nuclear, and wireless power transmission technologies for stationary, mobile surface, and space applications. Technology selections will depend on key criteria such as mass, volume, area, maturity, and application flexibility.

The Orion spacecraft is a deep space, crewed vehicle designed to support NASA’s Artemis exploration campaign. NASA successfully completed an uncrewed test flight of the Orion spacecraft during the 26-day Artemis I mission in November and December 2022. At numerous points during the mission, a small but measurable amount of power was generated by a solar array wing (SAW) while pointed away from the sun. This presentation discusses an analysis of in-flight telemetry data to characterize this condition. Various potential sources of reflected light were examined, with self-reflection off the spacecraft itself having the largest impact. Different array and attitude configurations were studied to characterize the array response to this spacecraft albedo.
A study is made of the suitability of the interaction between a thin, solid, spiraling electron beam of 5-15-kV energy and a microwave cavity, for the purpose of generating watts of CW millimeter-wave power. The effect of finite energy spread in the electron beam is considered both theoretically and experimentally. Measured results are given for a prototype device operating at 9.4 GHz. Power outputs of 5 W and electronic efficiencies near 2% have been obtained. The data agree well with the theory, subject to some ambiguity in the energy-distribution parameters. The performance is strongly limited by the energy spread in the beam.
A laboratory solar power system regulated by on-panel switches has been delivered for operating high power (3 kw), high voltage (15,000 volt) loads (communication tubes, ion thrusters). The modular system consists of 26 solar arrays, each with an integral light source and cooling system. A typical array contains 2560 series-connected cells. Each light source consists of twenty 500 watt tungsten iodide lamps providing plus or minus 5 per cent uniformity at one solar constant. An array temperature of less than 40 C is achieved using an infrared filter, a water cooled plate, a vacuum hold-down system, and air flushing.
The market potential for a portable geothermal wellhead power conversion device is assessed. Major study objectives included identifying the most promising applications for such a system, the potential impediments confronting their industrialization, and the various government actions needed to overcome these impediments. The heart of the study was a series of structured interviews with key decision-making individual in the various disciplines of the geothermal community. In addition, some technical and economic analyses of a candidate system were performed to support the feasibility of the basic concept.
The present state of the art of thermal power systems is surveyed. Because of the great potential variety of thermal power systems, the heat sources, the power conversion systems, and the integration of thermal power systems with missions are treated sequentially.
The advantages of the all electric airplane are discussed. In the all electric airplane the generator is the sole source of electric power; it powers the primary and secondary flight controls, the environmentals, and the landing gear. Five candidates for all electric power systems are discussed and compared. Cost benefits of the all electric airplane are discussed.
