Crystalline Silicotitanate (CST) Ion Exchange Media Performance Evaluations to Support TSCR DSA IX Media Equilibrium Contacts

The primary objective of this work is to calculate the maximum loading expected on the Hanford Tank Side Cesium Removal (TSCR) ion exchange columns. A key consideration in the design of the columns is the amount of 137 Cs that loads onto the Crystalline Silicotitanate (CST) and the heat generated by the loaded column during storage. Per request of Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS), Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) has utilized ZAM, a computer program developed by the research group of Professor Rayford G. Anthony of Texas A&M University, to predict the cesium loading on the CST for a variety of waste compositions expected to be processed by TSCR. The study evaluated cesium loadings for the following waste compositions: 1. Seventeen DFLAW campaign batches to cover projected supernate composition ranges within which TSCR may be expected to operate within the first ten years, 2. Hanford tank AP-105 and AP-107 waste solutions that will be processed by the TSCR system.

Performance Evaluation of Liquid-Cooled Open Stand-Alone Refrigerated Cases

This project is part of a joint effort between Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to evaluate the energy and demand savings potential of emerging efficient buildings technologies. This project quantifies the energy efficiency benefits from retrofitting an air-cooled, constant-speed compression, self-contained medium-temperature open-vertical display case with a high efficiency water-cooled condensing unit. In addition to a water-cooled heat rejection mechanism, the high-efficiency condensing unit utilizes a variable-speed compressor, electronic expansion valve and advanced controls system. The focus of this project, however, was mainly on capturing the energy savings potentials of the water-cooled condenser, variable-speed compression and electronic expansion valve, and not on the advanced controls. The results of this evaluation will be considered by ComEd and CLEAResult for future energy efficiency rebate offerings.

Performance Evaluation of LPBF Manufactured 316H Components

This work represents the continuation of a benchmark study that includes modeling, fabrication and characterization as demonstration to support industry’s adoption of advanced manufacturing processes in a variety of structures. This comprehensive study investigated the feasibility of using additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, specifically Laser Powder Direct Energy Deposition (LP-DED) and Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), to produce complex nuclear microreactor components using 316H stainless steel. The research focused on manufacturing an expanded elbow pipe component with transitioning sections, which are traditionally difficult and costly to produce through conventional manufacturing methods. The overall study’s primary objectives are therefore demonstrating AM viability for nuclear applications, optimizing process parameters, developing comprehensive material characterization protocols, validating computational modeling approaches, and establishing manufacturing guidelines for complex geometries. Although the initial work included the phased approach of cubical, upscaled cylindrical components, it is to enable to obtain more knowledge for the printing of the expanded elbow structure. The project achieved significant progress in process development by successfully optimizing LP-DED parameters to achieve 99.16-99.97% relative density in 316H stainless steel components. Through systematic evaluation of sixteen cube samples with varied laser powers (400-700W) and scan speeds (600-900 mm/min), optimal processing windows were identified at 500-550W with 600-700 mm/min or 650-700W with 650-900 mm/min scan speeds. The DED manufactured 316H demonstrated mechanical properties comparable or superior to wrought materials, with Young's modulus ranging from 153-208 GPa and controlled microstructural characteristics including greater than 95% face-centered cubic (FCC) phases and engineered cellular structures with sizes between 3.23-6.17 µm.

Performance Evaluation of Weather@home2 Simulations over West African Region

Weather and climate forecasting, using climate models, have become essential tools and life-savers in the West African region; in spite of the fact that climate models do not fully comply with attributes of forecast qualities—RASAP: reliability, association, skill, accuracy, and precision. The objective of this paper is to quantitatively evaluate, in comparison to CRU and ERA5 datasets, the RASAP compliance-level of the weather@home2 modeling system (w@h2). Findings from some statistical evaluations show that, to a moderately significant extent, w@h2 model provides useful information during the monsoon seasons; skills to capture the Little Dry Season over the Guinea zone; predictive skills for the onset season; ability to reproduce all the annual characteristics of the surface maximum air temperature over the region; as well as skill to detect heat waves that usually ravage West Africa during the boreal spring. The model displays traces of attributes that are needed for seasonal climate predictions and applications. Deficiencies in the quantitative reproducibility point to the facts that the model does provide a reliability akin to that of regional climate models. This paper further furnishes a prospective user with information on whether the model might be “useful or not” for a particular application.

Heavy-Duty Nonroad Material Handler Electrification Part 2: Energy Efficiency and Performance Evaluation

Decarbonization efforts achieved through electrification in nonroad mobile machinery can realize a reduction in fuel consumption of more than 20%, thanks to concepts familiar to light-duty passenger vehicles. This case study compares the results of a hybrid-electric material handler to its conventional counterpart, utilizing machine-specific drive cycles presented in part one of this paper series. The hybrid prototype features an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain that demonstrated substantial energy efficiency improvements. Specifically, there was a reduction in equivalent fuel consumption of 75% when operating in electric-only mode, and 33% when maintaining the battery by charging with an on-board generator. Together, the efficiency improvements can be extrapolated over a low-intensity, 8-h shift characterized by significant idle time and highly dynamic engine load for a 47% reduction in net energy consumption. Key technologies that led to this improvement included engine downsizing and decoupling, regenerative braking, and an electrohydraulic pump unit with advanced controls. Finally, his study explains details of the powertrain architecture and subsystems that were implemented on a demonstration vehicle, control strategies used to meet project goals, and an analysis of energy consumption from testing on a closed course. Also included in this study is a discourse on comparison metrics that can be used for quantifying the energy consumption differences between hybrid-electric and conventional diesel powertrains in nonroad mobile machinery.

Decision Tree Regression to Identify Representative Road Sections for Evaluating Performance of Connected and Automated Class 8 Tractors

Currently, connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) technology is being developed for Class 8 tractor trucks aimed at improved safety and fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions. Despite extensive efforts conducted across the world, the reported efficiency gains were varied from different research groups, raising concerns about the fidelity of models, the performance of control, and the effectiveness of the experimental validation. One root cause for this variation stems from the fact that the efficiency gain obtained from the CAV is sensitive to real-world conditions, including surrounding traffic and road grade. This study presents an approach aimed at identifying representative public road sections and facilitating CAV research from this perspective. By employing the decision tree regression (DTR) method to the Fleet DNA database, the most representative road sections can be identified. High-level metrics and detailed information of the derived road sections are also illustrated and discussed, which demonstrate their representativeness and the effectiveness of the approach. Meanwhile, the capability of this approach can be easily extended by integrating specific constraints into the DTR algorithm. As an example, a specific representative road section with an aggressive road grade profile was also provided via this approach.

Performance Evaluation of Different Parallel Programming Models in SCALE-Shift Sequences for Criticality and Shielding Applications [Abstract]

The SCALE code system has been widely used for nuclear criticality safety, reactor physics, radiation shielding, source term generation, and inventory analyses by researchers, industry, and regulatory bodies. Although limited support for shared- and distributed-memory parallel processing was introduced via C++ threading, OpenMP, and MPI, a hybrid parallel programming model with both distributed- and shared-memory parallelism has not been fully supported in the SCALE code system.
