Measurement of non-prompt ${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$-meson elliptic flow in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV

The elliptic flow (v 2 ) of D 0 mesons from beauty-hadron decays (non-prompt D 0 was measured in midcentral (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D 0 mesons were reconstructed at midrapidity $(|y|<0.8)$ from their hadronic decay D 0 →$K^-\pi^+$, in the transverse momentum interval $2< p_{\textrm{T}} < 12$ GeV/c. The result indicates a positive v 2 for non-prompt D 0 mesons with a significance of 2.7σ. The non-prompt D 0 -meson v 2 is lower than that of prompt non-strange D mesons with 3.2σ significance in $2< p_\textrm{T} < 8~\textrm{GeV}/c$, and compatible with the v 2 of beauty-decay electrons. Theoretical calculations of beauty-quark transport in a hydrodynamically expanding medium describe the measurement within uncertainties.

Exclusive four pion photoproduction in ultraperipheral Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV

The intense photon fluxes from relativistic nuclei provide an opportunity to study photonuclear interactions in ultraperipheral collisions. The measurement of coherently photoproduced π + π − π + π − final states in ultraperipheral Pb–Pb collisions at √s NN = 5.02 TeV is presented for the first time. The cross section, dσ/dy, times the branching ratio (ρ →π + π + π − π − ) is found to be 47.8±2.3 (stat.)± 7.7 (syst.) mb in the rapidity interval |y| < 0.5. The invariant mass distribution is not well described with a single Breit-Wigner resonance. The production of two interfering resonances, ρ(1450) and ρ(1700), provides a good description of the data. The values of the masses (m) and widths (Γ) of the resonances extracted from the fit are m 1 = 1385±14 (stat.)±3 (syst.) MeV/c 2 , Γ 1 = 431±36 (stat.)±82 (syst.) MeV/c 2 , m 2 = 1663±13 (stat.)±22 (syst.) MeV/c 2 and Γ 2 = 357 ± 31 (stat.)±49 (syst.) MeV/c 2 , respectively. The measured cross sections times the branching ratios are compared to recent theoretical predictions.

Dendrite characteristics in directionally solidified Pb-8 pct Au and Pb-3 pct Pd alloys

The dendritic microstructure and solute compression profiles for Pb-8 pct Au and Pb-3 pct Pd alloy samples are examined. Two groups of models, the minimum undercooled dendrite tip model of Burden and Hunt (1974) and Laxmanan (1974, 1984) and marginal stability at the dendrite tip models of Trivedi (1980) and Laxmanan (1974) are used to predict growth behavior of the alloy samples. The experimentally observed dendrite tip radius, primary arm spacing, and liquid composition at the dendrite tip are compared with theoretical predictions. It is observed that the modified minimum undercooling dendrite tip model and both of the marginal stability models accurately predict dendritic behavior. It is concluded that quantitative comparison of the primary arm spacing measurements can not form the basis for distinguishing among the various dendrite growth models in a positive temperature gradient.

Dendrite characteristics in directionally solidified Pb-8 pct Au and Pb-3 pct Pd alloys

An investigation of Pb-8 pct Au and Pb-3 pct Pd alloy specimens which have been partially directionally solidified and then quenched is performed in order to characterize their dendritic microstructural details and solute composition profiles. A controlled sectioning technique is employed to measure dendrite tip radii. It is found that most of the observed behavior is predicted quite well by a modification of the Burden and Hunt (1974) model proposed by Laxmanan (1984), in addition to the models based on the marginal stability approach. Results indicate that quantitative comparison of the primary arm spacing measurements can not form the basis of distinguishing among the various dendrite growth models in a positive temperature gradient.

Reliability of Solder Materials (Sn-Pb and Pb-Free) for Deep Space Missions

The purpose of this study is to assess the experimental reliability results of miniaturized passive components (01005, 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805, and 1206) assembled using surface mounting processes with tin-lead (Sn-Pb) and lead-free (Pb-Free) solder alloys under extreme temperature deep space environments.

Exclusive dielectron production in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV with ATLAS

Exclusive production of dielectron pairs, γγ → e + e – , is studied using $\mathcal{L}_{int}$ = 1.72 nb –1 of data from ultraperipheral collisions of lead nuclei at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The process of interest proceeds via photon–photon interactions in the strong electromagnetic fields of relativistic lead nuclei. Dielectron production is measured in the fiducial region defined by following requirements: electron transverse momentum $p^{e}_{T}$ > 2.5 GeV, absolute electron pseudorapidity |η e | < 2.5, dielectron invariant mass m ee > 5 GeV, and dielectron transverse momentum $p^{ee}_{T}$ < 2 GeV. Differential cross-sections are measured as a function of m ee , average $p^{e}_{T}$, absolute dielectron rapidity |y ee |, and scattering angle in the dielectron rest frame, |cos θ*|, in the inclusive sample, and also with a requirement of no activity in the forward direction. The total integrated fiducial cross-section is measured to be 215 ± 1 (stat) $^{+23}_{-20}$ (syst.) ± 4 (lumi.) μ b. Within experimental uncertainties the measured integrated cross-section is in good agreement with the QED predictions from the Monte Carlo programs STARLIGHT and SUPERCHIC, confirming the broad features of the initial photon fluxes. The differential cross-sections show systematic differences from these predictions which are more pronounced at high |y ee | and |cos θ*| values.

CGC for ultra-peripheral Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider: a more realistic calculation

We provide the first calculation of two-gluon production at mid-rapidity in ultra-peripheral collisions in the Color Glass Condensate framework. To estimate systematic uncertainty associated with poor understanding of the wave function of the nearly real photon, we consider two diametrically different models: the dilute quark-antiquark dipole approximation and a vector meson, in which color charge density is approximated by McLerran-Venugopalan model. In the experimentally relevant range, the target nucleus can be faithfully approximated by a highly saturated state. This simplification enables us to perform efficient numerical simulations and extract the two-gluon correlation functions and the associated azimuthal harmonics.
