Inclusive J /$\psi$ production at midrapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

We report on the inclusive J/ψ production cross section measured at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in the e + e - decay channel and the measurements are performed at midrapidity (|y|<0.9) in the transverse-momentum interval 0 < p T < 40 GeV/c, using a minimum-bias data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity L int =32.2 nb -1 and an Electromagnetic Calorimeter triggered data sample with L int =8.3 pb -1 . The p T -integrated J/ψ production cross section at midrapidity, computed using the minimum-bias data sample, is dσ/dy| y = 0 = 8.97±0.24 (stat)±0.48 (syst)±0.15 (lumi) μb. An approximate logarithmic dependence with the collision energy is suggested by these results and available world data, in agreement with model predictions. The integrated and p T -differential measurements are compared with measurements in pp collisions at lower energies and with several recent phenomenological calculations based on the non-relativistic QCD and Color Evaporation models.

Determination of the parton distribution functions of the proton using diverse ATLAS data from pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 7$$, 8 and 13 TeV

This paper presents an analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order in the theory of quantum chromodynamics for the determination of a new set of proton parton distribution functions using diverse measurements in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7, 8 and 13 TeV, performed by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, together with deep inelastic scattering data from ep collisions at the HERA collider. The ATLAS data sets considered are differential cross-section measurements of inclusive W ± and Z/γ* boson production, W ± and Z boson production in association with jets, $t\bar{t}$ production, inclusive jet production and direct photon production. In the analysis, particular attention is paid to the correlation of systematic uncertainties within and between the various ATLAS data sets and to the impact of model, theoretical and parameterisation uncertainties. The resulting set of parton distribution functions is called ATLASpdf21.

Multiplicity dependence of charged-particle jet production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The multiplicity dependence of jet production in pp collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is studied for the first time. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles using the anti-$k_T$ algorithm with resolution parameters $\textit{R}$ varying from 0.2 to 0.7. The jets are measured in the pseudorapidity range |$η_{\text{jet}}$| < 0.9 – $\textit{R}$ and in the transverse momentum range 5 < $p^{ch}_{\text{T,jet}}$ < 140 GeV/c. The multiplicity intervals are categorised by the ALICE forward detector V0. The $p_T$ differential cross section of charged-particle jets are compared to leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) calculations. It is found that the data are better described by the NLO calculation, although the NLO prediction overestimates the jet cross section below 20 GeV/c. The cross section ratios for different $\textit{R}$ are also measured and compared to model calculations. These measurements provide insights into the angular dependence of jet fragmentation. The jet yield increases with increasing self-normalised charged-particle multiplicity. This increase shows only a weak dependence on jet transverse momentum and resolution parameter at the highest multiplicity. While such behaviour is qualitatively described by the present version of PYTHIA, quantitative description may require implementing new mechanisms for multi-particle production in hadronic collisions.

Measurement of the total cross section and $\rho$-parameter from elastic scattering in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

In a special run of the LHC with β* = 2.5 km, proton–proton elastic-scattering events were recorded at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with an integrated luminosity of $340$ μb -1 using the ALFA subdetector of ATLAS in 2016. The elastic cross section was measured differentially in the Mandelstam t variable in the range from - t = 2.5 · 10 -4 GeV 2 to - t = 0.46 GeV 2 using 6.9 million elastic-scattering candidates. This paper presents measurements of the total cross section σ tot , parameters of the nuclear slope, and the p -parameter defined as the ratio of the real part to the imaginary part of the elastic-scattering amplitude in the limit t → 0. These parameters are determined from a fit to the differential elastic cross section using the optical theorem and different parameterizations of the t-dependence. The results for σ tot and p are σ tot (pp → X) = 104.7 ± 1.1 mb, p = 0.098 ± 0.011. The uncertainty in σ tot is dominated by the luminosity measurement, and in p by imperfect knowledge of the detector alignment and by modelling of the nuclear amplitude.

Search for light Higgs bosons from supersymmetric cascade decays in $\text {pp}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\,\textrm{TeV}$

A search is reported for pairs of light Higgs bosons (H 1 ) produced in supersymmetric cascade decays in final states with small missing transverse momentum. A data set of LHC pp collisions collected with the CMS detector at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 is used. The search targets events where both H 1 bosons decay into $\text{b}\bar{\text{b}}$ pairs that are reconstructed as large-radius jets using substructure techniques. No evidence is found for an excess of events beyond the background expectations of the standard model (SM). Results from the search are interpreted in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM, where a “singlino” of small mass leads to squark and gluino cascade decays that can predominantly end in a highly Lorentz-boosted singlet-like H 1 and a singlino-like neutralino of small transverse momentum. Upper limits are set on the product of the squark or gluino pair production cross section and the square of the branching fraction of the $\text{b}\bar{\text{b}}$ in a benchmark model containing almost mass-degenerate gluinos and light-flavour squarks. Under the assumption of an SM-like H 1 → $\text{b}\bar{\text{b}}$ branching fraction, H 1 bosons with masses in the range 40–120 GeV arising from the decays of squarks or gluinos with a mass of 1200–2500 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

Studies of the muon momentum calibration and performance of the ATLAS detector with $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

This paper presents the muon momentum calibration and performance studies for the ATLAS detector based on the $pp$ collisions data sample produced at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at the LHC during Run 2 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 . An innovative approach is used to correct for potential charge-dependent momentum biases related to the knowledge of the detector geometry, using the $Z$ → $μ^+$ $μ^–$ resonance. The muon momentum scale and resolution are measured using samples of $J/ψ$ → $μ^+$ $μ^–$ and $Z$ → $μ^+$ $μ^–$ events. A calibration procedure is defined and applied to simulated data to match the performance measured in real data. The calibration is validated using an independent sample of $Υ$ → $μ^+$ $μ^–$ events. At the Z ($J/ψ$) peak, the momentum scale is measured with an uncertainty at the 0.05% (0.1%) level, and the resolution is measured with an uncertainty at the 1.5% (2%) level. The charge-dependent bias is removed with a dedicated in situ correction for momenta up to 450 GeV with a precision better than 0.03 TeV –1 .

ATLAS flavour-tagging algorithms for the LHC Run 2 $pp$ collision dataset

The flavour-tagging algorithms developed by the ATLAS Collaboration and used to analyse its dataset of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV $pp$ collisions from Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider are presented. These new tagging algorithms are based on recurrent and deep neural networks, and their performance is evaluated in simulated collision events. These developments yield considerable improvements over previous jet-flavour identification strategies. At the 77% $b$-jet identification efficiency operating point, light-jet (charm-jet) rejection factors of 170 (5) are achieved in a sample of simulated Standard Model $t\bar{t}$ events; similarly, at a $c$-jet identification efficiency of 30%, a light-jet ($b$-jet) rejection factor of 70 (9) is obtained.

Search for heavy Majorana or Dirac neutrinos and right-handed $W$ gauge bosons in final states with charged leptons and jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy right-handed Majorana or Dirac neutrinos N R and heavy right-handed gauge bosons W R is performed in events with energetic electrons or muons, with the same or opposite electric charge, and energetic jets. The search is carried out separately for topologies of clearly separated final-state products (“resolved” channel) and topologies with boosted final states with hadronic and/or leptonic products partially overlapping and reconstructed as a large-radius jet (“boosted” channel). The events are selected from pp collision data at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 collected by the ATLAS detector at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. No significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed. The results are interpreted within the theoretical framework of a left-right symmetric model, and lower limits are set on masses in the heavy right handed W R boson and N R plane. The excluded region extends to about m(W R ) = 6.4 TeV for both Majorana and Dirac N R neutrinos at m(N R ) < 1 TeV. N R with masses of less than 3.5 (3.6) TeV are excluded in the electron (muon) channel at m(W R ) = 4.8 TeV for the Majorana neutrinos, and lim its of m(N R ) up to 3.6 TeV for m(W R ) = 5.2 (5.0) TeV in the electron (muon) channel are set for the Dirac neutrinos. These constitute the most stringent exclusion limits to date for the model considered.

Search for top-philic heavy resonances in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ $\text {TeV}$ with the ATLAS detector

A search for the associated production of a heavy resonance with a top-quark or a top-antitop-quark pair, and decaying into a $\overline{tt}$ pair is presented. The search uses the data recorded by the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider during the years 2015–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Events containing exactly one electron or muon are selected. The two hadronically decaying top quarks from the resonance decay are reconstructed using jets clustered with a large radius parameter of R = 1. The invariant mass spectrum of the two top quark candidates is used to search for a resonance signal in the range of 1.0 TeV to 3.2 TeV. The presence of a signal is examined using an approach with minimal model dependence followed by a model-dependent interpretation. No significant excess is observed over the background expectation. Upper limits on the production cross section times branching ratio at 95% confidence level are provided for a heavy Z' boson based on a simplified model, for Z' mass between 1.0 TeV and 3.0 TeV. The observed (expected) limits range from 21 (14) fb to 119 (86) fb depending on the choice of model parameters

QCD challenges from pp to AA collisions: 4th edition

Abstract This paper is a write-up of the ideas that were presented, developed and discussed at the fourth International Workshop on QCD Challenges from pp to AA, which took place in February 2023 in Padua, Italy. The goal of the workshop was to focus on some of the open questions in the field of high-energy heavy-ion physics and to stimulate the formulation of concrete suggestions for making progresses on both the experimental and theoretical sides. The paper gives a brief introduction to each topic and then summarizes the primary results.

Search for leptoquark pair production decaying into $te^- \bar{t}e^+$ or $t\mu ^- \bar{t}\mu ^+$ in multi-lepton final states in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\textrm{TeV}$ with the ATLAS detector

A search for leptoquark pair production decaying into $te^- \bar{t}e^+$ or $t\mu ^- \bar{t}\mu ^+$ in final states with multiple leptons is presented. The search is based on a dataset of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13~\text {TeV}$ recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Four signal regions, with the requirement of at least three light leptons (electron or muon) and at least two jets out of which at least one jet is identified as coming from a b-hadron, are considered based on the number of leptons of a given flavour. The main background processes are estimated using dedicated control regions in a simultaneous fit with the signal regions to data. No excess above the Standard Model background prediction is observed and 95% confidence level limits on the production cross section times branching ratio are derived as a function of the leptoquark mass. Under the assumption of exclusive decays into $te^{-}$ ($t\mu ^{-}$ ), the corresponding lower limit on the scalar mixed-generation leptoquark mass $m_{\textrm{LQ}_{\textrm{mix}}^{\textrm{d}}}$ is at 1.58 (1.59) TeV and on the vector leptoquark mass $m_{{\tilde{U}}_1}$ at 1.67 (1.67) TeV in the minimal coupling scenario and at 1.95 (1.95) TeV in the Yang–Mills scenario.

Precise test of lepton flavour universality in W -boson decays into muons and electrons in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The ratio of branching ratios of the $W$ boson to muons and electrons, $R^{μ/e}_{W}$ = $\mathcal{B}$($W$ → $μν$)/$\mathcal{B}$($W$ → $eν$), has been measured using 140 fb -1 of pp collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, probing the universality of lepton couplings. The ratio is obtained from measurements of the $t\overline{t}$ production cross section in the $ee$, $eμ$ and $μμ$ dilepton final states. To reduce systematic uncertainties, it is normalised by the square root of the corresponding ratio $R^{μμ/ee}_{Z}$ for the Z boson measured in inclusive $Z$ → $ee$ and $Z$ → $μμ$ events. By using the precise value of $R^{μμ/ee}_{Z}$ determined from $e^+$ $e^-$ colliders, the ratio $R^{μ/e}_{W}$ is determined to be $R^{μ/e}_{W}$ = 0.9995 ± 0.0022 (stat) ± 0.0036 (syst) ± 0.0014 (ext). The three uncertainties correspond to data statistics, experimental systematics and the external measurement of $R^{μμ/ee}_{Z}$, giving a total uncertainty of 0.0045, and confirming the Standard Model assumption of lepton flavour universality in $W$ boson decays at the 0.5% level.

Constraints on simplified dark matter models involving an s -channel mediator with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

This paper reports a summary of searches for a fermionic dark matter candidate in the context of theoretical models characterised by a mediator particle exchange in the s-channel. The data sample considered consists of pp collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider during its Run 2 at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to up to 140 fb -1 . The interpretations of the results are based on simplified models where the new mediator particles can be spin-0, with scalar or pseudo-scalar couplings to fermions, or spin-1, with vector or axial-vector couplings to fermions. Exclusion limits are obtained from various searches characterised by final states with resonant production of Standard Model particles, or production of Standard Model particles in association with large missing transverse momentum.

Fiducial and differential cross-section measurements of electroweak $W\gamma jj$ production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

The observation of the electroweak production of a W boson and a photon in association with two jets, using pp collision data at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre of mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV, is reported. The data were recorded by the ATLAS experiment from 2015 to 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 . This process is sensitive to the quartic gauge boson couplings via the vector boson scattering mechanism and provides a stringent test of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model. Events are selected if they contain one electron or muon, missing transverse momentum, at least one photon, and two jets. Multivariate techniques are used to distinguish the electroweak $W\gamma jj$ process from irreducible background processes. The observed significance of the electroweak $W\gamma jj$ process is well above six standard deviations, compared to an expected significance of 6.3 standard deviations. Fiducial and differential cross sections are measured in a fiducial phase space close to the detector acceptance, which are in reasonable agreement with leading order Standard Model predictions from MADGRAPH5+PYTHIA8 and SHERPA. The results are used to constrain new physics effects in the context of an effective field theory.

Measurement of the inclusive isolated-photon production cross section in pp collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{\textit{s}}=13}$ TeV

The production cross section of inclusive isolated photons has been measured by the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC in pp collisions at centre-of-momentum energy of $\mathbf {\sqrt{\textit{s}}=13}$ TeV collected during the LHC Run 2 data-taking period. The measurement is performed by combining the measurements of the electromagnetic calorimeter EMCal and the central tracking detectors ITS and TPC, covering a pseudorapidity range of and a transverse momentum range of |η γ | < 0.67 and a transverse momentum range 7 < p$^{γ}_{T}$ < 200 GeV/c. The result extends to lower p$^{γ}_{T}$ and x$^{γ}_{T}$ = 2p$^{γ}_{T}$/$\sqrt{s}$ ranges, the lowest x$^{γ}_{T}$ of any isolated photon measurements to date, extending significantly those measured by the ATLAS and CMS experiments towards lower p$^{γ}_{T}$ at the same collision energy with a small overlap between the measurements. The measurement is compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and the results from the ATLAS and CMS experiments as well as with measurements at other collision energies. The measurement and theory prediction are in agreement with each other within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties.

Search for a light charged Higgs boson in $t \rightarrow H^{\pm } b$ decays, with $H^{\pm } \rightarrow cs$, in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}={13}\hbox { TeV}$ with the ATLAS detector

A search for a light charged Higgs boson produced in decays of the top quark, $t \rightarrow H^{\pm } b$ with $H^{\pm } \rightarrow cs$, is presented. This search targets the production of top-quark pairs $t\bar{t} \rightarrow WbH^{\pm } b$, with $W \rightarrow ℓv(ℓ = e, μ)$, resulting in a lepton-plus-jets final state characterised by an isolated electron or muon and at least four jets. The search exploits b-quark and c-quark identification techniques as well as multivariate methods to suppress the dominant $t\bar{t}$ background. The data analysed correspond to 140 fb -1 of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC between 2015 and 2018. Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fraction $\mathscr{B}(t \rightarrow H^{\pm } b)$, assuming $\mathscr{B}(t \rightarrow Wb) + \mathscr{B}(t \rightarrow H^{\pm }(\rightarrow cs)b$, are set between 0.066% (0.077%) and 3.6% (2.3%) for a charged Higgs boson with a mass between 60 and 168 GeV.

Measurement of the inclusive isolated-photon production cross section in pp and Pb–Pb collisions at $\mathbf {\sqrt{\textit{s}_{NN }} = 5.02}$ TeV

The ALICE Collaboration at the CERN LHC has measured the inclusive production cross section of isolated photons at midrapidity as a function of the photon transverse momentum (p$^{γ}_{T}$), in Pb–Pb collisions in different centrality intervals, and in pp collisions, at centre-of-momentum energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The photon transverse momentum range is between 10–14 and 40–140 GeV/c, depending on the collision system and on the Pb–Pb centrality class. The result extends to lower p$^{γ}_{T}$ than previously published results by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the same collision energy. The covered pseudorapidity range is |η γ | < 0.67. The isolation selection is based on a charged particle isolation momentum threshold p$^{iso, ch}_{T}$ GeV/c within a cone of radii R = 0.2 and 0.4. The nuclear modification factor is calculated and found to be consistent with unity in all centrality classes, and also consistent with the HG-PYTHIA model, which describes the event selection and geometry biases that affect the centrality determination in peripheral Pb–Pb collisions. The measurement is compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and to the measurements of isolated photons and Z 0 bosons from the CMS experiment, which are all found to be in agreement.
