Quantifying the Impact of Electric Fields on the Local Structure and Migration of Potassium Ions at the Orthoclase (001) Surface

Developing an understanding of the response of mineral/water interfaces to applied electric fields is central to detecting and interpreting signatures of interfacial processes in the subsurface. Here we focus density functional theory calculations on understanding K + cation binding and diffusion across the (001) surface of orthoclase feldspar under various applied electric fields with and without surface hydration. The calculations reveal how water ligands labilize surface K + cations for diffusion while also increasing their sensitivity to electric field effects on the binding energy at different surface sites. The calculations also show how the direction and strength of the electric field systematically affect surface cation mobility, sorption, and hydration behavior. Specifically, electric fields directed toward the surface increase the potassium binding energies, facilitate K + diffusion across multiple binding sites, and increase the propensity of surface K + ions to lose their hydration shells. Furthermore, the findings help fill a major knowledge gap into the impact of electric fields on mineral/water interface structure and dynamics more generally, featuring in this case a commonly found type of feldspar involved in a multitude of atmospheric and geochemical processes.

Increasing the deuterated potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystal laser resistance by an additional conditioning with nanosecond pulses

Laser conditioning with 355-nm sub-nanosecond laser light is a well-known procedure to increase the bulk laser-induced damage resistance of deuterated potassium dihydrogen phosphate (DKDP) crystals. In this study, we investigate a new process to further increase the bulk damage resistance of DKDP crystals by performing additional conditioning with a 6.7-ns 355-nm laser after first conditioning with a 500-ps 355-nm laser. Here, damage tests (using both small and large beams) show that the second nanosecond conditioning raster increased the fluence required to produce the same density (large beam test) and probability (small beam test) of bulk damage by ∼30%.

ACCESS: Confirmation of No Potassium in the Atmosphere of WASP-31b

We present a new optical (400–950 nm) transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-31b (M = 0.48 M {sub J}; R = 1.54 R {sub J}; P = 3.41 days), obtained by combining four transit observations. These transits were observed with IMACS on the Magellan Baade Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory as part of the ACCESS project. We investigate the presence of clouds/hazes in the upper atmosphere of this planet, as well as the contribution of stellar activity on the observed features. In addition, we search for absorption features of the alkali elements Na i and K i, with particular focus on K i, for which there have been two previously published disagreeing results. Observations with Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/STIS detected K i, whereas ground-based low- and high-resolution observations did not. We use equilibrium and nonequilibrium chemistry retrievals to explore the planetary and stellar parameter space of the system with our optical data combined with existing near-IR observations. Our best-fit model is that with a scattering slope consistent with a Rayleigh slope (α=5.3{sub −3.1}{sup +2.9}), high-altitude clouds at a log cloud top pressure of −3.6{sub −2.1}{sup +2.7} bars, and possible muted H{sub 2}O features. We find that our observations support other ground-based claims of no K i. Clouds are likely why signals like H{sub 2}O are extremely muted and Na or K cannot be detected. We then juxtapose our Magellan/IMACS transmission spectrum with existing VLT/FORS2, HST/WFC3, HST/STIS, and Spitzer observations to further constrain the optical-to-infrared atmospheric features of the planet. We find that a steeper scattering slope (α = 8.3 ± 1.5) is anchored by STIS wavelengths blueward of 400 nm and only the original STIS observations show significant potassium signal.
