Energy-efficient upgrading of stranded ethane from shale gas to olefins holds the promise of increasing the supply of useful chemical feedstocks while reducing flaring-based CO 2 emissions. Previously, we reported a modular ethane-to-liquids (M-ETL) system based on a chemical looping oxidative dehydrogenation (CL-ODH) scheme. In this article, we present long-term (>1200 h) results of Li 2 CO 3 -promoted La 0.8 Sr 0.2 FeO 3 corresponding to ~4125 CL-ODH cycles in a large laboratory-scale packed bed reactor. Temperature monitoring along the bed length confirmed the exothermicity of both the oxidative dehydrogenation and regeneration steps, enabling an autothermal operation. Product gas analysis indicated that the redox catalyst maintains a high C 2+ selectivity (~90%) and ethane conversion (~67%) at 735 °C after continuous cycling of >1000 h. As a result, product distributions and heats of reactions were used to update our M-ETL process model for revised techno-economic analysis, demonstrating that the current system is economically viable with relatively low required selling prices across a wide range of operating scenarios.

Carrier transport engineering in bulk semiconductors using inclusion phases often results in the deterioration of carrier mobility (μ) owing to enhanced carrier scattering at phase boundaries. Here, we show by leveraging the temperature-induced structural transition between the α-Cu 2 Se and β-Cu 2 Se polymorphs that the incorporation of Cu 4 TiSe 4 inclusions within the Cu 2 Se matrix results in a gradual large drop in the carrier mobility at temperatures below 400 K (α-Cu 2 Se), whereas the carrier mobility remains unchanged at higher temperatures, where the β-Cu 2 Se polymorph dominates. The sharp discrepancy in the electronic transport within the α-Cu 2 Se and β-Cu 2 Se matrices is associated with the formation of incoherent α-Cu 2 Se/Cu 4 TiSe 4 interfaces, owing to the difference in their atomic structures and lattice parameters, which results in enhanced carrier scattering. In contrast, the similarity of the Se sublattices between β-Cu 2 Se and Cu 4 TiSe 4 gives rise to coherent phase boundaries and good band alignment, which promote carrier transport across the interfaces. Interestingly, the different cation arrangements in Cu 4 TiSe 4 and β-Cu 2 Se contribute to enhanced phonon scattering at the interfaces, which leads to a reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity. The large reduction in the total thermal conductivity while preserving the high power factor of β-Cu 2 Se in the (1–x)Cu 2 Se/(x)Cu 4 TiSe 4 composites results in an improved ZT of 1.2 at 850 K, with an average ZT of 0.84 (500–850 K) for the composite with x = 0.01. Furthermore, this work highlights the importance of structural similarity between the matrix and inclusions when designing thermoelectric materials with improved energy conversion efficiency.

The reaction of MnTe with AgSbTe 2 in an equimolar ratio (ATMS) provides a new semiconductor, AgMnSbTe 3 . AgMnSbTe 3 crystallizes in an average rock-salt NaCl structure with Ag, Mn, and Sb cations statistically occupying the Na sites. AgMnSbTe 3 is a p-type semiconductor with a narrow band gap of ~0.33 eV. A pair distribution function analysis indicates that local distortions are associated with the location of the Ag atoms in the lattice. Density functional theory calculations suggest a specific electronic band structure with multi-peak valence band maxima prone to energy convergence. In addition, Ag 2 Te nanograins precipitate at grain boundaries of AgMnSbTe 3 . Here, the energy offset of the valance band edge between AgMnSbTe 3 and Ag 2 Te is ~0.05 eV, which implies that Ag 2 Te precipitates exhibit a negligible effect on the hole transmission. As a result, ATMS exhibits a high power factor of ~12.2 μWcm -1 K -2 at 823 K, ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of ~0.34 Wm -1 K -1 (823 K), high peak ZT of ~1.46 at 823 K, and high average ZT of ~0.87 in the temperature range of 400–823 K.
Development of platinum group metal (PGM)-free catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has been a strategic research topic for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Present state-of-art PGM-free ORR catalysts are Fe, N co-doped carbon (Fe-N-C) catalysts, which unfortunately exhibit instability concerns. Herein, we report a stable atomically dispersed Co, N co-doped carbon (Co-N-C) catalyst with high Co content of 1.0 at% and the active site, i.e., the coordination of Co, is CoN2+2 in nature. The Co-N-C catalyst demonstrated high ORR activity comparable to, and high stability over 3 times better than, that of the Fe-N-C catalyst. It also achieved a high activity of 22 mA cm2 at 0.9 ViR-free and a power density of 0.61 W cm-2 under 1.0 bar H2/O2. Further, we identify two main degradation mechanisms of the PGM-free catalysts: catalyst oxidation by H2O2/radicals and demetalation. The improved stability of Co-N-C relative to Fe-N-C is attributed to less Fenton-reactive nature of Co and significantly enhanced resistance to demetalation of Co-N-C.
