More About Architecture For Intelligent Robotic Control

Boolean neural networks proposed to implement part of intermediate level of hierarchical architecture of control system for artificially intelligent control of robot hand. Concept described in "Architecture for Intelligent Control of Robotic Tasks" (NPO-17871). Rule level of architecture implemented in two Boolean neural networks operated and updated in alternation. No explicit programming of network. Internal configuration not unique but, depends on initial state and history of previous adaptations. Accepts new rules sequentially presented by external controller.

FD/DAMA Scheme For Mobile/Satellite Communications

Integrated-Adaptive Mobile Access Protocol (I-AMAP) proposed to allocate communication channels to subscribers in first-generation MSAT-X mobile/satellite communication network. Based on concept of frequency-division/demand-assigned multiple access (FD/DAMA) where partition of available spectrum adapted to subscribers' demands for service. Requests processed, and competing requests resolved according to channel-access protocol, or free-access tree algorithm described in "Connection Protocol for Mobile/Satellite Communications" (NPO-17735). Assigned spectrum utilized efficiently.

Manganese Nitride Sorption Joule-Thomson Refrigerator

Proposed sorption refrigeration system of increased power efficiency combines MnxNy sorption refrigeration stage with systems described in "Regenerative Sorption Refrigerator" (NPO-17630). Measured pressure-vs-composition isotherms for reversible chemisorption of N2 in MnxNy suggest feasibility to incorporate MnxNy chemisorption stage in Joule-Thomson cryogenic system. Discovery represents first known reversible nitrogen chemisorption compression system. Has potential in nitrogen-isotope separation, nitrogen purification, or contamination-free nitrogen compression.

More About Gravitational Bumps And Repeating Orbits

Improved algorithm reduces computation needed to estimate dynamics affecting trajectory of satellite in orbit around Earth with approximately repeating ground track. Underlying concepts presented in "Computing Gravitational Bumps From Repeating-Orbit Data", (NPO-17925). Satellite presumed to undergo same gravitational perturbation upon each near-repetition. Tracking data from multiple nearly repeating arcs collected into segments called "bins" and processed together to reduce effects of random errors, and thereby obtain more-accurate estimates of dynamical parameters. Bumps in gravitational field of Earth estimated with less computation.

Barrier/n/n+ Varactor Frequency Multipliers

Barrier/n/n+ (BNN+) varactor diodes developed as frequency multipliers at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. Devices required to serve as frequency triplers or quintuplers to provide powers of order of milliwatts at frequencies from 0.1 THz to about 1 THz. Feature Mott or heterojunction barriers and back-to-back diode configuration, which make it possible to obtain symmetrical capacitance-versus-voltage characteristics with high ratio between maximum and minimum capacitances. Extension of barrier/intrinsic/n+ (BIN+) concept described in "BIN Diode for Submillimeter Wavelengths" (NPO-17258).

Four-Sector Cylindrical Radio-Frequency Ion Trap

Proposed linear radio-frequency ion trap consists of closed metal cylinder partitioned into four equal cylindrical-sector electrodes and two circular end electrodes. Features include relatively large ion-storage capacity and shielding against external fields. Used in frequency-standard laboratories to confine 199Hg+ ions electrodynamically in isolation from external environment. Similar to device described in "Linear Ion Trap for Atomic Clock" (NPO-17758).

More About Vector Adaptive/Predictive Coding Of Speech

Report presents additional information about digital speech-encoding and -decoding system described in "Vector Adaptive/Predictive Encoding of Speech" (NPO-17230). Summarizes development of vector adaptive/predictive coding (VAPC) system and describes basic functions of algorithm. Describes refinements introduced enabling receiver to cope with errors. VAPC algorithm implemented in integrated-circuit coding/decoding processors (codecs). VAPC and other codecs tested under variety of operating conditions. Tests designed to reveal effects of various background quiet and noisy environments and of poor telephone equipment. VAPC found competitive with and, in some respects, superior to other 4.8-kb/s codecs and other codecs of similar complexity.

Asymmetry In Biphase Data Signals

Report presents analysis of some effects of asymmetry in Manchester (biphase) binary data signal transmitted by phase modulation of sinusoidal carrier signal. Report extends analysis described in article, "Effects of Asymmetry of NRZ Data Signals on Performance" (NPO-18261), to include case where data biphase-modulated directly on residual carrier.

Space Station Freedom - Approaching the critical design phase

The status and future developments of the Space Station Freedom are discussed. To date detailed design drawings are being produced to manufacture SSF hardware. A critical design review (CDR) for the man-tended capability configuration is planned to be performed in 1993 under the SSF program. The main objective of the CDR is to enable the program to make a full commitment to proceed to manufacture parts and assemblies. NASA recently signed a contract with the Russian space company, NPO Energia, to evaluate potential applications of various Russian space hardware for on-going NASA programs.

More About Laser Scanner Tests For Single-Event Upsets

Two reports describe preliminary theoretical and experimental studies based on method described in "Laser Scanner Tests For Single-Event Upsets" (NPO-18216). Laser-scan and heavy-ion data found correlated within factor of two. Method of testing for single-event upsets intended to overcome disadvantages of, complement, and/or substitute for more-expensive cyclotron-testing method, which does not provide spatial resolution.

Generalized Adaptive Artificial Neural Networks

Mathematical model of supervised learning by artificial neural network provides for simultaneous adjustments of both temperatures of neurons and synaptic weights, and includes feedback as well as feedforward synaptic connections. Extension of mathematical model described in "Adaptive Neurons For Artificial Neural Networks" (NPO-17803). Dynamics of neural network represented in new model by less-restrictive continuous formalism.
