Designing the Insulation System for Motors in Electrified Aircraft: Optimization, Partial Discharge Issues and Use of Advanced Materials

Designing the insulation system for motors to be used in electrical aircraft requires efforts for maximizing specific power, but, in parallel, particular attention to achieve high reliability. As a major harm for organic insulation systems is partial discharges, design must be able to infer their likelihood during any operation stage and handle their potential inception. This paper proposes a new approach to carry out optimized or conservative insulation system designs which can provide the specified life at the chosen failure probability as well as look at the option of possibly reducing the risk of partial discharges to zero, at any altitude. Examples of designing turn, phase to ground and phase-to-phase insulation systems are reported, with cases where the design can be optimized and other cases where the optimized design does not pass IEC testing standard. Therefore, the limits for design feasibility as a function of the required level of safety and reliability are discussed, showing that the presence of partial discharges cannot be always avoided even through conservative design criteria. Therefore, the use of advanced, corona-resistant materials must be considered, in order to reach a higher, sometimes redundant, level of reliability.

Motor and drive arrangement for refrigeration system

A heat exchanger system includes a heat exchanger coil circulating a first heat transfer fluid therethrough, and a fan at least partially surrounded by the heat exchanger coil to urge a flow of air through the heat exchanger coil to dissipate thermal energy from the first heat transfer fluid. A brushless direct current fan motor is located the fan to urge rotation of the fan and an ancillary electrical component operably connected to the heat exchanger system and electrically isolated from the first heat transfer fluid.

Insulated exhaust port liner for a cylinder head assembly of a motor vehicle

An insulated exhaust port liner of a cylinder head assembly for fluidly connecting to an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle includes a sealing layer. The sealing layer has a first surface defining a passage for fluidly connecting to the internal combustion engine and receiving exhaust gas. The sealing layer further includes a second surface opposite to the first surface. The liner further includes a thermal barrier layer coated onto the second surface of the sealing layer. The thermal barrier layer is a porous non-woven material for supporting the sealing layer on the cylinder head and reducing a transfer of heat from the sealing layer to the cylinder head.

Electric motor cooling with oscillating heat pipes

A stator and a motor including a stator. The stator includes a stator hub, a plurality of stator teeth extending from the stator hub that define a stator slot having a stator slot base, at least one winding disposed in the stator slot, and one or more oscillating heat pipes disposed at least partially in the at least one winding. The at least one winding is held apart from the stator slot base so that a cooling channel is defined between an inner winding portion of the at least one winding and a portion of the one or more oscillating heat pipes is disposed in the channel so cooling fluid can be passed between the stator slot base and the inner winding portion to cool the inner winding portion via at least operation of the one or more oscillating heat pipes.

Recycling Rare Earth Elements from End-of-Life Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Motors

In this paper, we propose a superstructure-based approach to finding the optimal pathways for recovering rare earth elements in their commercialized rare earth oxide form from end-of-life EV and HEV motors. The proposed superstructure was modeled as a MILP optimization problem, selecting the net present value as the objective function. Whenever possible, costing data taken from the literature was used to inform this mode. However, due to the novelty of this research area data were often not available thus requiring the generation of flowsheets that were implemented in Aspen Plus.

Primary Pump Motor Area - Transfer Fan Replacement PLC Design

My poster is about a project that I have worked on in my time at ATR as an intern. The Heating and Ventilation Control Panel (HVB-1) controls thirty-five heating and ventilation fans within the Advanced Test Reactor. This control panel needs replacement, as many of the components inside the existing panel are becoming old and degrading. In preparation for this replacement effort, concepts and component identification for the new control panel needed to be developed. Instead of replacing the new panel with replacement mechanical components, a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is proposed as a solution. Although multiple fans are associated with this panel, my poster focuses on the replacement design for the Primary Pump Motor Area Transfer Fan. This will provide an example of how the entire cabinet may be upgraded.

Genetic Algorithm-Based Commutation Angle Control for Torque Ripple Mitigation in Switched Reluctance Motor Drives

This work addresses the application of the Genetic Algorithm (GA) technique to optimize the commutation angles of a 2 kW 8/6 switched reluctance machine (SRM). The primary goal is to reduce the well-known drawback of SRMs: the torque ripple. Firstly, the machine was modeled in Matlab /Simulink ® using lookup tables obtained via finite element method (FEM) simulations. Subsequently, the model was used to perform the GA routine aiming to find the optimal phase commutation angles that minimize the torque ripple factor. Notably, the torque performance of the SRM was significantly affected by the commutation angles during the search for the optimal solution. Afterwards, the GA results for four different operation points were verified experimentally through a developed drive platform with digital signal processor-based (DSP) control and an asymmetric bridge converter. As showed by the experiments, the proposed approach was suitable to reduce the torque ripple by more than 50% for one of the evaluated operating points. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the torque ripple mitigation led to acoustic noise improvement.

Hybrid Modeling of a Circulating Water Pump Motor

To achieve high capacity factors, the nuclear fleet has relied on labor-intensive and time-consuming operation and preventive maintenance programs for plant systems. Manually performed inspection, calibration, testing, and maintenance of plant assets at periodic frequencies, along with the time-based replacement of assets irrespective of condition, have resulted in a costly, labor-centric business model. Fortunately, there are technologies that can eliminate unnecessary preventive maintenance activities by deploying risk-informed predictive maintenance, enabling the transition to a technology-centric business model.
