Mg Isotopic Compositions of Fine-Grained Ca-Al-Rich Inclusions from Reduced CV3 Chondrites and Implications on the Timescale of Nebular Condensation

Fine-grained Ca-Al-rich inclusions (FGIs) in carbonaceous chondrites are interpreted as aggregates of nebular gas-solid condensates that escaped significant melting [1]. Recent Al-Mg isotopic studies of small FGIs (<200 µm in size) from pristine CO3 chondrites have revealed significant variations in initial 26Al/27Al ratio, (26Al/27Al)(sub 0), spanning from 5.73×10(exp ˗5) to 8×10(exp ˗6) [2,3]. Importantly, [3] found a main CAI population characterized by (26Al/27Al)(sub 0) = 5.4×10(exp ˗5) that likely record the onset of dust condensation and initial coagulation events, followed by multiple thermal events over an extended time period. Thus far, a small number of large FGIs from CV3 chondrites have been analyzed, showing a narrower range of ( 26Al/27Al)(sub 0) = 5.27×10(exp ˗5) to 3.35×10(exp ˗5) [4-6], similar to those inferred from coarse-grained, igneous CAIs (CGIs) from CV3 chondrites [7]. These observed different ratios may raise a question if large FGIs in CV3 chondrites record a time interval from primary direct condensation of refractory solids to their aggregation and growth into larger inclusions. In this study, we present Al-Mg isotopic compositions of FGIs from reduced CV3 chondrites to better constrain their formation timescale relative to smaller FGIs in CO3 chondrites, as well as to CGIs in CV3 chondrites. This isotopic study is coordinated with a microstructural study to elucidate the origin and nature of FGIs in the petrologic and mineralogical context.

Synthesis and Characterization of Fe(III)-Fe(II)- Mg- Al Smectite Solid Solutions and Implications for Planetary Science

This study demonstrates the synergies and limits of multiple measurement types for the detection of smectite chemistry and oxidation state on planetary surfaces to infer past geochemical conditions. Smectite clay minerals are common products of water-rock interactions throughout the solar system, and their detection and characterization provides important clues about geochemical conditions and past environments if sufficient information about their composition can be discerned. Here, we synthesize and report on the spectroscopic properties of a suite of smectite samples that span the intermediate compositional range between Fe(II), Fe(III), Mg, and Al end-member species using bulk chemical analyses, X-ray diffraction, Vis/IR reflectance spectroscopy, UV and green-laser Raman spectroscopy, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Our data show that smectite composition and the oxidation state of octahedral Fe can be reliably identified in the near infrared on the basis of combination and fundamental metal-OH stretching modes between 2.1–2.9 μm, which vary systematically with chemistry. Smectites dominated by Mg or Fe(III) have spectrally distinct fundamental and combination stretches, whereas Al-rich and Fe(II)-rich smectites have similar fundamental minima near 2.76 μm, but have distinct combination M-OH features between 2.24 and 2.36 μm. We show that with expanded spectral libraries that include intermediate composition smectites and both Fe(III) and Fe(II) oxidation states, more refined characterization of smectites from MIR data is now possible, as the position of the 450 cm–1 absorption shifts systematically with octahedral Fe content, although detailed analysis is best accomplished in concert with other characterization methods. Our data also provide the first Raman spectral libraries of smectite clays as a function of chemistry, and we demonstrate that Raman spectroscopy at multiple excitation wavelengths can qualitatively distinguish smectite clays of different structures and can enhance interpretation by other types of analyses. Our sample set demonstrates how X-ray diffraction can distinguish between dioctahedral and trioctahedral smectites using either the (02,11) or (06,33) peaks, but auxiliary information about chemistry and oxidation state aids in specific identifications. Finally, the temperature-dependent isomer shift and quadrupole splitting in Mössbauer data are insensitive to changes in Fe content but reliability differentiates Fe within the smectite mineral structure.

Low keV electron probe analysis of silicate minerals for Mg, Al, and Si using pure-element standards

Accurate electron probe values for Mg, Al, and Si in silicate minerals may be obtained with pure-element standards. Analysis must be done at low (6 kV) accelerating potential and for best results, the average atomic number of the sample should be within about plus or minus 1 of the atomic number of the pure-element standard. This last requirement is automatically fulfilled for most common silicate minerals, as their average atomic numbers usually fall within the 11 to 15 range. Examples studied include a wet-chemically analyzed cordierite containing 17.71 weight percent Al, for which a value of 17.6 plus or minus 0.3 percent was obtained with the electron probe, and a hornblende containing 19.15 percent Si, which gave 19.0 plus or minus 0.3 percent using the probe method.

Excitation of Mg/+/ by electron collisions.

Demonstration that the Mg II resonance doublet at 2800 A represents a suitable diagnostic tool for the study of physical conditions in the solar chromosphere. The interpretation of intensities and line profiles requires the knowledge of all electron collision cross sections, which can affect directly or indirectly the population of upper levels of the doublet. For this purpose collision cross sections for transitions between levels 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 3p, 4p, 5p, 3d, 4d, and 5d have been calculated in the unitarized Coulomb-Born approximation without exchange. For the 3s-3p and 3s-3d transitions the present results are in a good agreement with the close-coupling calculations of Burke and Moores (1968).
