Analysis of the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor Using MOOSE Tools

This presentation shows the development of neutronics and thermal hydraulics models of the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor using codes in the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment. We show preliminary results of full-power steady state and a loss of forced cooling transient from that steady state.

Nuclear Modeling and Simulation Using MOOSE-based Tools

Overview presentation of the variety of modeling and simulation activities for nuclear applications to be presented to visitors (professors and their students) from the United Kingdom. Presentation compiled by listed author with contributions from others at the laboratory. Others are listed within the acknowledgements of the presentation rather than a long list of authors on the title slide.

Development of a MOOSE-based crystal plasticity model with irradiation defect evolution for irradiation creep in 316

Irradiation creep and irradiation swelling are two of the lifetime limiting factors for structural materials in nuclear reactors. These mechanical effects are driven by irradiation defect evolution and the interaction of those defects with dislocations in the microstructure. We present here a coupled cluster dynamics – crystal plasticity approach to model irradiation swelling and creep behavior in 316 SS. The time-dependent evolution of irradiation defects is calculated with a cluster dynamics approach and passed to the crystal plasticity model to compute the dislocation evolution. We show the impact of the irradiation defect evolution on the stress state in the material, which drives inelastic deformation through dislocation motion. The inelastic deformation in the 316 SS is dependent on the dose rate, where the inelastic deformation driven by the early-stage irradiation defect evolution determines the mechanical behavior of the 316 SS.

Complete development of LAROMance-type surrogate models for Zircaloy, as well as initial integration and testing in MOOSE, which addresses industry needs for licensing advanced LWR fuels

This milestone report details the progress in the constitutive surrogate modeling framework for Zircaloy’s mechanical behavior under extreme conditions, within the NEAMS program throughout the U.S. fiscal year 2024 (FY24). The presented work expands on the spectral based mechanical solver and the mechanistic material model for Zircaloy, which were introduced in the NEAMS program during FY22 and detailed in the previous fiscal year (FY23). As part of the NEAMS program, the current effort described in this report focused on the development of a novel viscplastic (creep) surrogate for the mechanistic, polycrystal-based model. To this end, the work was subdivided into two interdependent components related to the necessary improvements to the LApx constitutive model and algorithm and, to the development and use of a surrogate model.

Software Quality Assurance, Software Requirements and Gap Analysis for the MOOSE-Based Open-Source Multiphysics Code Cardinal

Cardinal continuous development and improvement efforts have led to the software being considered as a high-fidelity design and licensing tool for key areas of nuclear reactor relevant physics, including neutron transport, fluid flow, heat transfer, and mechanical processes. The fast development and expansion of the software from a pure R&D framework towards its application in the nuclear industry and regulation require a focus on maintaining and enhancing Cardinal’s software quality through strict adherence to a Software Quality Assurance (SQA) framework. To facilitate compliance with SQA standards, the Cardinal SQA Program has been initiated during Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23).

Dispatch Manager for NEML2 Constitutive Model Calculations Embedded in MOOSE

This report describes the extended capabilities of the NEML2 constitutive modeling library, including a flexible and efficient work dispatching system designed to leverage both CPU and GPU resources. This enhancement addresses one of the primary computational challenges in large-scale simulations: the ability to distribute and execute batches of material model evaluations across heterogeneous computing devices. The new dispatch system introduces a modular set of dispatcher and scheduler classes that coordinate the flow of data and execution between devices. The dispatcher is responsible for efficiently packaging work, managing device-specific memory operations, and synchronizing results. This modularity allows for extensibility, making it straightforward to integrate additional computing backends in the future. From an implementation standpoint, the dispatcher system interfaces seamlessly with NEML2's existing models. They handle device-aware tensor operations, optimize memory transfers, and support asynchronous execution when applicable. This design ensures that batches of material points can be evaluated concurrently, substantially improving throughput compared to previous single-device or serial implementations. These improvements not only enhance the raw performance of NEML2 but also improve its usability in multiscale and high-fidelity simulations, where the simultaneous evaluation of large material point batches is critical. Benchmarks included in the report demonstrate the system’s scalability, highlighting its effectiveness when leveraging modern GPU architectures.
