A two-level GPU-accelerated incomplete LU preconditioner for general sparse linear systems

This paper presents a parallel preconditioning approach based on incomplete LU (ILU) factorizations in the framework of Domain Decomposition (DD) for general sparse linear systems. We focus on distributed memory parallel architectures, specifically, those that are equipped with graphic processing units (GPUs). In addition to block-Jacobi, we present general purpose two-level ILU Schur complement-based approaches, where different strategies are presented to solve the coarse-level reduced system. These strategies are combined with modified ILU methods in the construction of the coarse-level operator, in order to effectively remove smooth errors by targeting an algebraically smooth vector. We leverage available GPU-based sparse matrix kernels to accelerate the setup and the solve phases of the proposed ILU preconditioner. We evaluate the efficiency of the proposed methods as a smoother for algebraic multigrid (AMG) and as a preconditioner for Krylov subspace methods on challenging anisotropic diffusion problems and a collection of general sparse matrices.

GCAM-Demeter-LU

This GCAM-Demeter-LU is made available under the Open Data Commons Attribution License:http://opendatacommons.org/licenses/by/1.0/. The dataset includes the projected global gridded land cover (excluding the Antarctic) for the period of 2015-2100 at 0.05-degree resolution and 5-year time step under fifteen SSP-RCP scenarios driven by five GCMs (i.e., gfdl, hadgem, ipsl, miroc, and noresm), using the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM) and a geospatial downscaling model (Demeter). The data has been stored in self-describing NetCDF format. The dataset also includes the mean and standard deviation of the results driven by the five GCMs. More specifically, the data in each year includes grid-explicit fraction (in percent) of each of the 32 plant functional types that are widely used in current Earth system models. The NetCDF files are named as “GCAM_Demeter_LU_SSP_RCP_Model_Year.nc”, where “SSP” and “RCP” denote the SSP and RCP scenarios, including 'ssp1_rcp26', 'ssp1_rcp45', 'ssp1_rcp60', 'ssp2_rcp26', 'ssp2_rcp45', 'ssp2_rcp60', 'ssp3_rcp45', 'ssp3_rcp60', 'ssp4_rcp26', 'ssp4_rcp45', 'ssp4_rcp60', 'ssp5_rcp26', 'ssp5_rcp45', 'ssp5_rcp60', and 'ssp5_rcp85'. “Year” denotes the year of the land use data, and “GCM” denotes the source driving forcing data from five global climate models (gfdl, hadgem, ipsl, miroc, and noresm), or the mean (“modelmean”) and the standard deviation (“modelstd”) of the results from the five GCMs.See https://github.com/JGCRI/chen_et_al_2020a for details on how to reproduce this data. A geometric theory for the QR, LU and power iterations.

Consideration of the task of computing the invariant subspaces of a given matrix. For this purpose the LU, QR, treppen and bi-iterations have been presented, used, and studied more or less independently of the old-fashioned power method. Each of these methods generates implicitly a sequence of subspaces which determines the convergence properties of the method. The iterations differ in the way in which a basis is constructed to represent each subspace. This aspect largely determines the usefulness of the method. It is shown that the first four iterations produce exactly the same sequence of subspaces as do direct and inverse iteration started from appropriate subspaces. Their convergence properties are therefore the same, and a complete geometric convergence theory is presented in terms of the power method. It is shown that Hessenberg matrices are associated with ideal starting spaces.

A new approximate LU factorization scheme for the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations

A new approximate LU factorization scheme is developed to solve the steady state Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (NS) equations. Central differencing is used for both implicit and explicit operator and special care is taken to obtain well-conditioned factors on the implicit side. The scheme is then analyzed and optimized according to a simple linear analysis. It is unconditionally stable for the model hyperbolic equation in both two- and three-dimensions. However, the requirement for well-conditioned factors has essentially limited the effective time step the scheme can achieve. Supersonic and transonic three-dimensinal flows past a hemisphere cylinder are computed to demonstrate the convergence characteristics of the scheme. A good convergence rate is achieved for the inviscid case. Finally, an explicit eigenvector annihilation procedure is adopted successfully to remove the stiffness caused by the fine grid spacing for viscous flows.

An LU implicit scheme for high speed inlet analysis

A numerical method is developed to analyze the inviscid flowfield of a high speed inlet by the solution of the Euler equations. The LU implicit scheme in conjunction with adaptive dissipation proves to be an efficient and robust nonoscillatory shock capturing technique for high Mach number flows as well as for transonic flows.

Superconductivity above 90 K in the square-planar compound system ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) with A = Y, La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Ho, Er, and Lu

Superconductivity has been found in the 90-K range in ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) with A = La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Ho, Er, and Lu in addition to Y. The results suggest that the unique square-planar Cu atoms, each surrounded by four or six oxygen atoms, are crucial to the superconductivity of oxides in general. In particular, the high Tc of ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) is attributed mainly to the quasi-two-dimensional assembly of the CuO2-Ba-CuO(2 + x)Ba-CuO2 layers sandwiched between two A layers, with particular emphasis in the CuO(2 + x) layers. Higher-Tc oxides are predicted for compounds with bigger assemblies of CuO2 layers coupled by Ba layers.

U-Th-Pb, Sm-Nd, Rb-Sr, and Lu-Hf systematics of returned Mars samples

The advantage of studying returned planetary samples cannot be overstated. A wider range of analytical techniques with higher sensitivities and accuracies can be applied to returned samples. Measurement of U-Th-Pb, Sm-Nd, Rb-Sr, and Lu-Hf isotopic systematics for chronology and isotopic tracer studies of planetary specimens cannot be done in situ with desirable precision. Returned Mars samples will be examined using all the physical, chemical, and geologic methods necessary to gain information on the origin and evolution of Mars. A returned Martian sample would provide ample information regarding the accretionary and evolutionary history of the Martian planetary body and possibly other planets of our solar system.

Three-dimensional calculation of supersonic reacting flows using an LU scheme

A new three-dimensional numerical program incorporated with comprehensive real gas property models has been developed to simulate supersonic reacting flows. The code employs an implicit finite volume, Lower-Upper (LU) time-marching method to solve the complete Navier-Stokes and species equations in a fully-coupled and very efficient manner. A chemistry model with nine species and eighteen reaction steps are adopted in the program to represent the chemical reaction of H2 and air. To demonstrate the capability of the program, flow fields of underexpanded hydrogen jets transversely injected into supersonic air stream inside the combustors of scramjets are calculated. Results clearly depict the flow characteristics, including the shock structure, separated flow regions around the injector, and the distribution of the combustion products.

LU-SGS implicit algorithm for three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with source term

A numerical method is developed for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using the concept of pseudocompressibility. A lower-upper symmetric-Gauss-Seidel implicit scheme is developed for three-dimensional incompressible viscous flow computations. The present algorithm offers additional advantages when solving the flow equations with source terms. Complete vectorizability of the algorithm on oblique planes of sweep in three-dimensions is accomplished in a new flow solver, INS3D-LU code. Spatial differencing is a second-order accurate semi-discrete finite-volume method augmented by a third-order accurate numerical dissipation model which is based on spectral-radii. Comparison of numerical solutions for a curved duct with experimental data shows good agreement. The method is applied to calculate the inducer flow of the Space Shuttle Main Engine turbopump.

The code is a full Navier-Stokes solver for incompressible fluid in three dimensional generalized coordinates using a lower-upper symmetric-Gauss-Seidel implicit scheme. This code has been fully vectorized on oblique planes of sweep and parallelized using autotasking with some directives and minor modifications. The timing results for five grid sizes are presented and analyzed. The code has achieved a processing rate of over one Gflops.

Ho:Tm:Lu(3)Al(5)O(12) As An Infrared-Laser Material

Material selected on basis of quantum-mechanical modeling of lasing properties. Ho:Tm:Lu(3)Al(5)O(12) features relatively low thermal occupation of lower laser level because this level higher than corresponding levels of most other available laser materials. In addition, it has reasonably large effective cross section for stimulated emission because of contribution of several transitions around central strong transition. Yet another desirable property is its calculated rate of upconversion is lower than those of other laser materials. Inasmuch as upconversion detracts from efficiency of laser, this lower rate of upconversion is highly desirable.
