Characterization and measurement of phase-locked loop performance

A set of performance measures and tests are presented which can be implemented at the 'black box' level for the characterization of such statistical aspects of phase-locked loop behavior as the acquisition and tracking threshold, phase error jitter, Doppler accuracy, etc. Also presented is an automatic measurement system, designated the Statistical Loop Analyzer, which has been developed in order to undertake these phase-locked device performance measurements.

Supermode analysis of phase-locked arrays of semiconductor lasers

The optical characteristics of phase-locked semiconductor laser arrays are formulated in terms of the array supermodes, which are the eigenmodes of the composite-array waveguide, by using coupled-mode theory. These supermodes are employed to calculate the near fields, the far fields, and the difference in the longitudinal-mode oscillation wavelengths of the array. It is shown that the broadening in the far-field beam divergence, as well as the broadening of each of the longitudinal modes that were observed in phase-locked arrays, may arise from the excitation of an increasing number of supermodes at increasing pumping levels.

Rate equations analysis of phase-locked semiconductor laser arrays under steady state conditions

Rate equations analysis of phase-locked semiconductor laser arrays has been carried out. It was found that for given (laser) current densities, the photon density distribution in the array elements is that particular one which maximizes the total photon density. The results of this analysis were then combined with the waveguide properties of the laser array waveguide, yielding a basic model of phase-locked diode laser arrays. This model explains the effects of the variation of the current combination through the array elements on its mode structure that were observed recently.

Line locking and SS 433

The general problem of acceleration by line locking in an optically thin medium is considered. Analytic solutions to the coupled equations of radiation transfer and matter motion are presented. Using these solutions, restrictions on the physical conditions of the accelerated matter are derived. By applying these conditions to SS 433, it is found that if the absorbing ion is light (hydrogen or helium), the matter must be highly clumped, and the acceleration has to begin at approximately 10 to the 12th cm. Line-locking acceleration with a hydrogen-like heavy ion such as iron demands higher than solar ion abundance.

Phase-Locked Laser Array With Nonuniform Spacing

To obtain phase-locked array that reliably produces single far-field lobe, configuration includes lasing stripes not placed on regular centers but located in regular way with nonuniform centers (i.e., with spacing determined by some function). Alternatively, lasing stripes placed on set of periodic arrays with different stripe-to-stripe centers interlaced onto single chip or placed in structure in which stripe-to-stripe spacing is random or pseudorandom. Monolithic, phase-locked, semiconductor-laser array design produces output laser beam comprising substantially single lobe.

Self-locking double retention redundant full pin release

A double retention redundant pull pin release system is disclosed. The system responds to a single pull during an intentional release operation. A spiral threaded main pin is seated in a mating bore in a housing, which main pin has a flange fastened thereon at the part of the main pin which is exterior to the housing. Accidental release tends to rotate the main pin. A secondary pin passes through a slightly oversized opening in the flange and is seated in a second bore in the housing. The pins counteract against one another to prevent accidential release. A frictional lock is shared between the main and secondary pins to enhance further locking of the system. The secondary pin, in response to a first pull, is fully retracted from its bore and flange hole. Thereafter the pull causes the main pin to rotate free of the housing to release, for example, a parachute mechanism.

Time evolution of pulsed far-field patterns of GaAlAs phase-locked laser-diode arrays

The time evolution of pulsed far fields from commercially available gain-guided phase-locked arrays has been studied and compared to experimental results previously obtained by streak camera measurements, and to predictions of coupled-mode theories developed for index- and gain-guided arrays. Although phase locking is evident by 100 ps into the drive pulse, stable operation in a fixed superposition of array modes is not achieved until 1-2 ns after the drive pulse has stabilized.

A self-injection locked, Q-switched, line-narrowed Ti:Al2O3 laser

Line-narrowing, Q-switched, and self-injection locking are studied independently and as a system. Line narrowing is shown both theoretically and experimentally to depend on the inverse square root of the pulse evolution time interval. Q switching of the Ti:Al2O3 laser is demonstrated and the laser output energy as a function of the Q-switch delay is investigated. Self-injection is demonstrated and the operation of the laser is explored as a function of loss and the Q-switch delay. Self-injection locking is demonstrated and the performance as a function of the Q-switch delay is determined.

A note on the performance analysis of static locking in distributed database systems

Even though transaction deadlocks can severely affect the performance of distributed database systems, many current evaluation techniques ignore this aspect. Shyu and Li proposed an evaluation method which takes deadlocks into consideration. However, their technique is limited to exclusive locking. Using this technique, researchers illustrate the impact of deadlocks in the presence of shared locking on distributed database performance.

Effects Of Phase Jitter On Lock Detection In QPSK

Report presents study of performances of digital carrier-signal-tracking loops used in reception of radio signals containing quadrature-phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) modulation representing binary non-return-to-zero data. Presents mathematical models of received signal and of noise. Describes lock-detector algorithm and presents equations characterizing lock-detection performance. Equations applied in analyses of three QPSK carrier-tracking loops: Costas crossover loop, maximum a posteriori estimation loop, and generalized Costas loop. Results of computer simulations agree with equations.

Mobile terminal equipment design utilising split-loop phase-lock techniques

The design and resultant performance of the terminal equipment in a mobile satellite system is vitally important in respect to the overall cost/performance compromise of the whole system. Improvements in system performance which also result in a reduction of the equipment cost are rare. However, this paper details a significant advance in terminal design, utilizing a novel form of 'split-loop' phase locked receiver/downconverter system to enable an accurate, stable and wide coverage terminal to be realized at a reduced cost. The system has the capability of automatically locking onto any carrier within a complete transponder, and can cope with severe amplitude modulation and fading effects.

Generation of sub-100-fs pulses from a CW mode-locked chromium-doped forsterite laser

Generation of femtosecond pulses from a continuous-wave mode-locked chromium-doped forsterite laser is reported. The forsterite laser was actively mode locked by using an acoustooptic modulator operating at 78 MHz with two Brewster high-dispersion glass prisms for intracavity chirp compensation. Transform-limited sub-100-fs pulses were routinely generated in the TEM(00) mode with 85 mW of continuous power (with 1 percent output coupler), tunable over 1230-1280 nm. The shortest pulses measured had a 60-fs pulse width.

Three Alternative Symbol-Lock Detectors

Three symbol-lock detectors proposed as alternatives in advanced receivers processing non-return-to-zero binary data signals. Two perform operations similar to those of older square-law and absolute-value types. However, integrals computed during nonoverlapping symbol periods and, therefore, only one integrator needed in each such detector. Proposed detectors simpler, but performances worse because noises in overlapping samples correlated, whereas noises in nonoverlapping samples not correlated. Third detector is signal-power-estimator type. Signal integrated during successive half symbol cycles, and therefore only one integrator needed. Half-cycle integrals multiplied to eliminate effect of symbol polarity, and products accumulated during M-cycle observation period to smooth out estimate of signal power. If estimated signal power exceeds threshold, delta, then lock declared.
