Low Mass Muscle Actuators (LoMMAs) Using Electroactive Polymers

NASA is using actuation devices for many space applications and there is an increasing need to cut their cost as well as reduce their size, mass, and power consumption. Existing transducing actuators, such as piezoceramics, are inducing limited displacement levels. Potentially, electroactive polymers (so called EAP) can be formed as inexpensive, low-mass, low-power, miniature muscle actuators that are superior to the widely used actuators.

Rotary Piezoelectric Motors Actuated by Traveling Waves (abstract)

Piezoelectric rotary motors are being developed as a drive mechanism for miniature spacecraft instruments and subsystems. The technology that has recently emerged in commercial products requires more rigorous analytical tools for effective design. The theoretical predictions and the experimental corraboration showed a remarkable agreement and they will be presented and discussed in this paper.

(abstract) Oblique Insonification Ultrasonic NDE of Composite Materials for Space Applications

In recent years, a great deal of research has been exerted to developing NDE methods for the characterization of the material properties of composites as well as other space structural materials. The need for information about such parameters as the elastic properties, density, and thickness are critical to the safe design and operation of such structural materials. Ultrasonics using immersion methods has played an important role in these efforts due to its capability, cost effectiveness, and ease of use. The authors designed a series of ultrasonic oblique insonification experiments in order to develop a practical field applicable NDE method for space structures.

Nondestructive Determination of Heat/Fire Damage to Polymer - Matrix Composites Using Obliquely Insonified Ultrasonic Waves

Reported on is the development of a quantitative NDE method, using stiffness analysis, for the determination of the degradation of composite materials that are exposed to elevated temperatures, prior to the formation of delaminations or other defects. Methods of testing describe a specimen immersed in water and subjected to ultra- sound, with reflected pulses or tone-burst (leaky Lamb wave) analysis.

Low Frequency Guided Plate Waves Propagation in Fiber Reinforced Composites

Conventional destructive techniques for the determination of the elastic stiffness constants of composite materials can be costly and often inaccurate. Reliable nondestructive evaluation methods for monitoring the integrity of composite materials and structures are needed. Guided wave propagation in isotropic plate have been studied. Studies on the low frequency symmetric guide waves are presented.

Composite Material Property Nondestructive Characterization Using Obliquely Insonified Ultrasonic Waves

The analysis of reflected ultrasonic waves induced by oblique insonification of composite materials is a powerful tool for providing informations about defects and material properties. A device was developed to manipulate a pair of transmitting and receiving transducers at vrious angles of wave incidence and propagation with the fiber orientation.

Nondestructive Characterization of Adhesive Bonds from Guided Wave Data

The critical role played by adhesive bonds in the fracture and failure of composites and other bonded materials is well known. A good knowledge of the mechanical properties of these adhesion joints is a prerequisite to reliable design and reliable prediction of the performance of these bonded structures.

Ultrasonic Evaluation of Thermal Degradation in Adhesive Bonds

The critical role played by adhesive bonds in lap joints is well known. A good knowledge of the mechanical properties of adhesive bonds in lap joints is a prerequisite to the design and reliable prediction of the performance of these bonded structures. Furthermore, the lap joint may be subject to high-temperature environments in service. Early detection of the degree of thermal degradation in adhesive bonds is required under these circumstances. A variety of ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques can be used to determine the thickness and the elastic moduli of adhesively bonded joints. In this paper we apply a previously developed technique based on the leaky Lamb wave (LLW) experiment to investigate the possibility of characterizing the thermal degradation of adhesive bonds in lap joints. The degradation of the adhesive bonds is determined through comparison between experimental data and theoretical calculations.

Nondestructive Determination of Heat/Fire Damage to Polymer- Matrix Composites Using Obliquely Insonified Ultrasonic Waves

Heat and fire damage to composite structures cause loss of strength that cannot be detected by current NDE methods unless physical damage occurs. Further, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of the mechanism of damage from thermal exposure of organic matrix composites to elevated temperatures. Information compiled from field reports and lab experiments increasingly suggests that there is material degradation and it is not necessarily involved with the introduction of physical defects. In recent years, various researchers examined the potential to identifying thermal degradation to organic matrix composites prior to delamination. The methods that were used include: ultrasonics, backscattered X-ray, eddy current, thermography, drift and LPF spectroscopies, acousto-ultrasonics and hardness testing. None of these methods were able to correlate NDE results with loss of mechanical properties.

Nondestructive Characterization of Adhesive Bonds from Guided Wave Data

The critical role played by interface zones in the fracture and failure of composites and other bonded materials is well known. The existing nondestructive evaluation methods are generally not capable of yielding useful quantitative information of the strength of an interface.
