Fiber optic probes for laser light scattering: Ground based evaluation for micgrogravity flight experimentation. Integrated coherent imaging fiber optic systems for laser light scattering and other applications

The research work presented in this report has established a new class of backscatter fiber optics probes for remote dynamic light scattering capability over a range of scattering angles from 94 degrees to 175 degrees. The fiber optic probes provide remote access to scattering systems, and can be utilized in either a noninvasive or invasive configuration. The fiber optics create an interference free data channel to inaccessible and harsh environments. Results from several studies of concentrated suspension, microemulsions, and protein systems are presented. The second part of the report describes the development of a new technology of wavefront processing within the optical fiber, that is, integrated fiber optics. Results have been very encouraging and the technology promises to have significant impact on the development of fiber optic sensors in a variety of fields ranging from environmental monitoring to optical recording, from biomedical sensing to photolithography.

Analysis and Design of Phase Change Thermal Control for Light Emitting Diode (LED) Spacesuit Helmet Lights

LED Helmet Extravehicular Activity Helmet Interchangeable Portable (LEHIP) lights for the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) have been built and tested and are currently being used on the International Space Station. A design is presented of the passive thermal control system consisting of a chamber filled with aluminum foam and wax. A thermal math model of LEHIP was built and correlated by test to show that the thermal design maintains electronic components within hot and cold limits for a 7 hour spacewalk in the most extreme EVA average environments, and do not pose a hazard to the crew or to components of the EMU.

Ammonia-Assisted Light Alkane Anti-coke Reforming on Isolated ReO x Sites in Zeolite

The conventional reforming produces H 2 with stoichiometric amounts of CO and CO 2 from hydrocarbons. Here, we show that CO x -free H 2 can be produced from ammonia-assisted reforming (ammoreforming) of natural gas liquids (C n H 2n+2 + nNH 3 = nHCN + (2n + 1) H 2 , n = 2 or 3) at the same conditions as the steam reforming. Such a process co-produces HCN, which can be easily separated from H 2 and used as value-added chemicals or for NH 3 recycling through hydrolysis. In addition, the ammoreforming of ethane and propane was realized over the Re-modified HZSM-5 zeolite rather than the traditional Pt-based catalyst for the BMA process (methane ammoreforming). The specific activity of the Re/HZSM-5 catalysts at 650 °C is up to 1 mol H2 /g Re /min (or 180 min –1 ) during ethane ammoreforming. The catalyst is highly coke resistant and shows only slight deactivation with a time-on-stream up to 20 h. Characterization of the fresh and used catalysts by X-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopies suggested that the isolated ReO x site grafted by AlO 4 – tetrahedral in the zeolite framework is responsible for the outstanding catalytic activity and coke resistibility.

Light Dark Matter Search with a High-Resolution Athermal Phonon Detector Operated Above Ground

We present limits on spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions using a 10.6 g silicon athermal phonon detector with a baseline energy resolution of 4.92 +/- 0.01 eV. This exclusion analysis sets the most stringent dark matter-nucleon cross-section limits for masses from 87--140 MeV/c^2 , with a raw exposure of 9.9 g d acquired at an above-ground facility. This work illustrates the scientic potential of athermal phonon sensors with eV-scale energy resolution for future dark matter searches.

On the Equilibrium Electrostatic Potential and Light-Induced Charge Redistribution in Halide Perovskite Structures

Lead halide perovskites are semiconductor materials which are employed as nonintentionally doped absorbers inserted between two selective carrier transport layers (SCTL), realizing a p-i-n or n-i-p heterojunction. In our study, we have developed and investigated a lateral device, based on methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) in which the p-i-n heterojunction develops in the horizontal direction. Our research suggests that the effective doping level in the MAPbI3 film should be very low, below 1012 cm-3. Along the vertical direction, this doping level is not enough to screen the electric field of the buried heterojunction with the SCTL. The perovskite work function is therefore affected by the work function of the SCTL underneath. From drift-diffusion simulations, we show that intrinsic perovskite-SCTL structures develop mV range surface photovoltages (SPVs) under continuous illumination. However, perovskite-SCTL structures can develop SPVs of hundreds of mV, as confirmed by our measurements. We therefore analyzed the compatibility between low doping and low defect densities in the perovskite layer and such high SPV values using numerical modeling. It is shown that these high SPV values could originate from electronic processes due to large band offsets in the buried perovskite-SCTL heterojunctions, or at the SCTL-transparent conductive oxide (TCO) buried heterojunction. However, such electronic processes can hardly explain the long SPV persistence after switching off the illumination.
