ISEE-1 observations in the magnetosphere of VLF emissions triggered by nonducted coherent VLF waves during VLF wave-injection experiments

It is noted that recent data from the ISEE-1 spacecraft indicate that VLF emissions triggered by conducted coherent VLF waves often possess spectral characteristics markedly different from those of emissions triggered by ducted waves. Emission triggering by nonducted waves is found to involve a strong path selectiveness. It is also established that emission triggering by nonducted waves can take place over a wide L-range and may involve inner radiation belt particles of energy up to 200 keV. It is concluded that the VLF emission generation process can occur under much more general conditions than previously believed on the basis of the results of ground-to-ground wave-injection experiments.

Upstream hydromagnetic waves and their association with backstreaming ion populations - ISEE 1 and 2 observations

Measurements from the Lepedea plasma instruments and the flux gate magnetometers on ISEE 1 and 2 are used to examine the nature of the hydromagnetic waves associated with the various classes of ions backstreaming from the earth's bow shock. The reflected ions, which are confined to a narrow energy and angular range, are accompanied by small amplitude (less than approximately 1/2 gamma peak to peak) left-handed waves at frequencies close to 1 Hz in the spacecraft frame. Diffuse backstreaming particles with a broad energy spectrum are associated with low frequency (approximately 30-s period), large amplitude (approximately 5 gamma peak to peak) waves. Intermediate particles are associated with a mixture of these two wave types. Often the waves associated with the diffuse beams steepen as if they were minishocks. The leading edge (trailing edge in the spacecraft frame) frequently appears to break up into a whistler mode wave packet. These discrete wave packets are right-hand polarized and have frequencies from below the proton gyrofrequency to well above it in the plasma frame and are blown back towards the earth by the solar wind.

The 2f/p/ circumterrestrial radio radiation as seen from ISEE 3

A narrowband highly spin-modulated radio source has been observed with the radio astronomy experiment on ISEE 3 from a position 0.01 AU upstream of the earth. The source is interpreted as radio line emission generated at twice the local plasma frequency in the vicinity of the earth's bow shock by energetic particles. The bandwidth of the 2f(p) emission varies from less than 3 kHz to more than 20 kHz and is probably broadened by solar wind density variations across the source region. The 2f(p) source is visible about 50% of the time, and the true position of its centroid is usually located within 30 earth radii of the subsolar point, but at times is observed at a distance of up to 60 earth radii. But most of these variations might result from changes in the orientation of the polarization vector in a partially polarized source or from refraction across an electron density front.

ISEE-1 observations of electrostatic shocks on auroral zone field lines between 2.5 and 7 earth radii

The ISEE-1 satellite frequently passes through electrostatic shocks and the low altitude auroral particle acceleration region at geocentric radial distances less than approximately 7 earth radii and as low as greater than or equal to 2 earth radii. A sampling of data from the quasi-static electric field experiment during 22 such passes revealed events (defined as regions of low frequency turbulence) containing electrostatic shocks (defined as an electric field greater than or equal to 100 mV/m) during eight of the passes, which is an occurrence frequency comparable to that obtained near apogee on the S3-3 satellite. Examination of three such electrostatic shocks shows that typical potentials of a few kV and latitudinal scale widths mapped to the ionosphere of a few km are encountered. From the latitudinal widths of the shocks and from the magnitudes of their observed electric fields, it is argued that the parallel electric field and auroral particle acceleration region may be confined to geocentric distances less than a few earth radii.

Magnetic Field Investigation for ISEE mother and daughter spacecraft

Highlights of the design and fabrication of fluxgate magnetometers for the ISEE A and B satellites which were launched from a single launch vehicle into the same highly elliptical orbit are presented. The instrument consisted of four basic assemblies: the sensors, the drive and sense electronics, the data handling unit; and the flipper. The digital handling data handling assembly contained a digital filter that mantained a uniform transfer function for all three axes of both spacecraft. Initial studies centered on the bow shock and the magnetopause and show that both boundaries are in rapid motion. The bow shock was found to be very thin, close to an ion inertial length in thickness, but the magnetopause was much thicker than expected, about 400 to 1000 km on average. The magnetometers have each logged over 3 2/3 years of continuous operation.

Velocity-space synthesis of ISEE-1 measurements of the three dimensional electron distribution function

A computer package which produces contour plots of the three dimensional electron distribution function measured by an electron spectrometer aboard ISEE-1 is described. Examples of the contour plots and an explanation of how to use the program, including the necessary computer code for running the program on the GSFC 360/91 computer is presented. The method by which the discrete measurements of the distribution function, given by points on the four dimensional surface are synthesized into a smooth surface in a three dimensional space which can be contoured is described. The velocity components are parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field, respectively, in the proper frame of the electrons.

Plasma wave experiment for the ISEE-3 mission

Results of analyses of data received from a scientific instrument designed to study solar wind and plasma wave phenomena on the ISEE-3 mission are discussed in two papers prepared for publication. A study of plasma wave levels in and interplanetary magnetic field orientation preceding observations of interplanetary shocks by the satellite infers that quasi-parallel, interplanetary shocks are preceded by foreshocks whose presence is not obviously attributable to scattering of ion beams generated at quasi-perpendicular zones of these interplanetary shocks. Investigations of whistler mode turbulence in the disturbed solar wind resulted in various indirect lines of evidence indicating that these whistler waves are generated propagating at large angles to the local interplanetary field, a fact which helps identify possible free energy sources for their growth.

ISEE 1 observations of O/2+/ in the magnetosphere

Observations of O(2+) by ISEE 1 have revealed occasional O(2+)/O(+) density ratios of the order of unity within the plasmasphere. However, most plasmaspheric O(2+)/O(+) density ratios are generally below 0.3. These ratios agree generally with those seen by GEOS 1. Within the plasmasphere the O(2+) population appears to be primarily cold and isotropic (as is typical for major ions). Outside the plasmasphere, O(2+)/O(+) field-aligned flux ratios may be of the order of 0.1-0.2, though they are frequently much smaller, and the O(2+) distributions are typically field aligned. A rare observation of a unidirectional conic in O(2+) is also reported.

ISEE 1 observations of thermal plasma in the vicinity of the plasmasphere during periods of quieting magnetic activity

An investigation of thermal plasma behavior in the vicinity of the plasmasphere during periods of quieting magnetic activity was conducted by combining thermal ion observations made with the plasma composition experiment on ISEE 1 with plasma density profiles obtained from plasma frequency measurements made with the same satellite's plasma wave experiment. During periods in which the magnetic activity quiets, the two regions characterized by H(+):He(+):O(+) (isotropic) and H(+):O(+):He(+) (field-aligned) ion species distributions (in order of dominance) are separated by a new region in which low-energy H(+) and He(+) are found flowing along the magnetic field lines. At other times, following quieting magnetic activity, distributions having peak fluxes at 90 deg pitch angle are observed in this region.

A hydromagnetic vortex seen by ISEE-1 and 2

Magnetometer and plasma data from the dual ISEE spacecraft are combined in a study of the initial plasma vortex event reported by Hones et al. (1978) in the dawn plasma sheet. The event is a transient hydromagnetic wave of two cycles duration with a six minute period. Large amplitude compressional and transverse magnetic components were present. Particle and magnetic pressure oscillations were in strict antiphase, but did not balance. When combined with the plasma velocity data these properties show that substantial Earthward field-aligned flows of electromagnetic energy and heat flux occurred during the vortex. The net energy flow perpendicular to B was in the antisolar direction. This event possesses hydromagnetic features unique to a hot plasma environment.

The thickness of the magnetopause current layer - ISEE 1 and 2 observations

ISEE 1 and 2 magnetometer data over the dayside magnetosphere are analyzed to present a global survey of the magnetopause thickness. It is shown that earlier magnetopause velocities have been somewhat underestimated, with results indicating constant rapid and irregular motion and velocities ranging from 10-80 km/s in 80% of the cases. The magnetopause thickness is found to be between 400-1000 km, with larger thicknesses also observed, and the thickness does not seem to depend on the orientation of the magnetosheath magnetic field, but does appear to be ordered by dipole magnetic latitude so that the magnetopause current sheet is thinnest near the magnetic equator, which suggests that reconnection is initiated in the equatorial regions rather than in the polar cusps.

High temporal resolution energetic particle soundings at the magnetopause on November 8, 1977, using ISEE 2

An inbound crossing of the magnetopause on November 8, 1977, was analyzed using the greater spatial resolution obtained by the ISEE 2 instrument at high bit rate. A technique is described, which was used to obtain trapping boundary parameters for five energy channels in the energy range from 24-70 keV, and the location of the trapping boundary with respect to the boundary layer plasma is identified in addition to the waves on the trapping boundary consistent with the soundings in all energy channels. It is found that the trapping boundary for energetic ions is sharp and well defined for about 35 keV ions, corresponding most of the time to the earthward edge of the plasma boundary layer. Magnetosheath-like plasma is sometimes observed up to 800 km inside the trapping boundary, and it is argued that the wave nature of the trapping boundary is the cause of the slight difference between the higher and lower energy ion trapping boundary locations.

ISEE 1 observations of VLF line radiation in the earth's magnetosphere

VLF line radiation in the magnetosphere is analyzed in an attempt to clarify the role of radiation from electric power lines in magnetospheric wave-particle interactions. Observations were made by the ISEE 1 satellite from October 1977 through August 1979 between L = 2 and L = 8 and 50 to 110 deg W longitude, a region encompassing the magnetic field lines linking the Eights, Siple and Roberval stations and in which VLF chorus activity had been linked to power line radiation. Line radiation was detected on 5 of 90 orbits, in all cases at frequencies below 4 kHz. The one event with a high S/N ratio exhibited lines changing frequency at rates from 22 to 6 Hz/min over a 9-min period. The radiation was detected at a time when whistler mode echoing was quite pronounced on lower L shells, and thus may have been a scattered component of line radiation echoing between hemispheres. It is concluded that very little of the background VLF wave energy in the outer magnetosphere is contained in line radiation, although the catalytic role of line radiation in controlling wave-particle interactions remains to be assessed.

Plasma wave levels and IMF orientations preceding observations of interplanetary shocks by ISEE-3

Some interplanetary shocks detected by ISEE-3 are preceded by many hours of strongly enhanced plasma wave noise at a few kHz, while others have essentially no wave precursors above background. It has been shown that these extremes correspond to quasi-parallel and quasi-perpendicular shocks, respectively, based on the instantaneous orientation angle of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) to the shock normal at the time the shocks cross the spacecraft. It is shown that precursor wave noise level is correlated with field orientation and an extrapolated instantaneous orientation angle throughout the preshock observation interval for two contrasting active and quiet cases, and that intermediate, variable noise levels correspond to intermediate, variable IMF orientations. It is inferred that foreshocks are an intrinsic part of the structure of quasiparallel interplanetary shocks.

Large-amplitude magnetic variations in quasi-parallel shocks - Correlation lengths measured by ISEE 1 and 2

Wide separations up to more than 1 earth radius between ISEE 1 and 2 during the second half of 1978 have been used to measure the correlation length of magnetic pulsations in quasiparallel shocks. When the two spacecraft were less than a few hundred km apart, magnetic oscillations measured by magnetometers on both spacecraft exhibited virtually identical waveforms, but at distances of several thousand km, the two time series of field variation showed no detailed similarily at all. The correlation coefficients of the pulsations dropped from close to 1.0 for spacecraft separations of less than 100 km to 0.2 for separations of greater than 800 km. A correlation length of several hundred km may be related to the gyroradius of return protons with energy typical of the peaks of diffuse and beam ion distributions.

ISEE-1 and -2 observations of magnetic field strength overshoots in quasi-perpendicular bow shocks

According to the Rankine-Hugoniot jump conditions, the magnetic field strength increases in passing from upstream to downstream of a magnetohydrodynamic shock. At the earth's bow shock the magnetic field often increases significantly more than is required by the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions before decaying in an oscillatory fashion to its downstream average value. Recent OGO-5 and ISEE studies, together with the realization that overshoots also occur in the bow shocks of Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn have focussed attention on these phenomena. It is found that none of the nonlinear dispersive wave theories in the shock literature can account for the overshoot. The present investigation documents the dependence of the overshoot amplitude and thickness on solar wind parameters. Magnetic field overshoots are found to be characteristic of supercritical quasi-perpendicular shocks. The overshoot thickness scales as the ion Larmor radius based upon the solar wind speed and magnetic field.

Electric fields measured by ISEE-1 within and near the neutral sheet during quiet and active times

An understanding of the physical processes occurring in the magnetotail and plasmasheet during different interplanetary magnetic field orientations and differing levels of ground magnetic activity is crucial for the development of a theory of energy transfer from the solar wind to the particles which produce auroral arcs. In the present investigation, the first observations of electric fields during neutral sheet crossings are presented, taking into account the statistical correlations of the interplanetary magnetic field direction and ground activity with the character of the electric field. The electric field data used in the study were obtained from a double probe experiment on the ISEE-1 satellite. The observations suggest that turbulent electric and magnetic fields are intimately related to plasma acceleration in the neutral sheet and to the processes which create auroral particles.

Magnetic field rotation through the magnetopause - ISEE 1 and 2 observations

ISEE 1 and 2 magnetic field data obtained during dayside magnetopause crossings are analyzed using a minimum variance technique in order to determine the characteristics of the rotation of the magnetic field across the magnetopause. Only a small fraction of the magnetopause crossings examined present a sufficiently coherent structure that they can be compared with theoretical predictions and only a few of the hodograms of the magnetic field at the crossings display the ideal rotation expected for a rotational discontinuity structure. It is found that the observed senses of rotation are not consistent with the predictions of the electron whistler polarization theory. Rotations exceeding 180 deg are very seldom observed; they usually occur across multiple crossings, either as 360 deg rotation about the minimum variance direction or, occasionally, in more complicated patterns associated with S-shaped hodograms. These observations are seen as indicating that the sense of the magnetic field rotation through the magnetopause is controlled by the relative orientation of the magnetosheath and the magnetospheric field and that the angular rotation is minimized when the magnetic field changes from one orientation to the other.
