Regional Response Assets, DOE’s Radiological Assistance Program – Believe it or not? INL isn’t the region’s most likely threat

The Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) Region 6 Radiological Assistance Program (RAP) personnel respond out of Idaho National Laboratory (INL) based in Idaho Falls, Idaho. An overview of the RAP is presented describing the capabilities and related radiological response capabilities. Several recent radiological responses will be discussed to illustrate the capabilities of this national resource.

Slide Decks for EV@S Stakeholder Meeting at INL September 2024

These slides were used at the Electric Vehicles at Scale National Lab Consortium, Stakeholder Meeting hosted at INL in September 2024. The slides are now requested to be made available publicly for reference. All slides review projects that are already in the public domain and their information is intended for public release. They are not from sensitive topics or areas with any restrictions. A few projects are overviewed in detail and some slides were just an aid to the breakout sessions that were conducted with stakeholders and lab staff.

Summer 2024 INL Intern Poster Session Submission - Brian Schumitz

This LRS submission is my poster for the INL Intern Poster Session, Summer 2024. Abstract: The Software Engineering and Cybersecurity Lab (SECL) at Montana State University has developed PIQUE, a system for evaluating software quality. PIQUE's adaptability allows for language-specific static-analysis operations, including a model for assessing cloud microservice ecosystems. These ecosystems often rely on Docker for efficient deployment and management of containerized services. Our research focuses on evaluating the network quality within these microservice ecosystems. To automate this process, we're utilizing Snort, an open-source intrusion detection system renowned for its ability to detect and log network traffic. By leveraging Snort's customizable rules, we aim to construct comprehensive testing methods for measuring and quantifying the network quality based on traffic between Docker containers. This research aims to enhance the overall security and reliability of cloud microservice ecosystems by providing automated and robust quality evaluation mechanisms, ultimately contributing to the advancement of software engineering practices in these environments

Shielding an Infrasound Sensor for INL’s Fuel Conditioning Facility

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has been pyroprocessing spent fuel from the Experimental Breeder Reactor II (EBR-II). This process occurs in the Fuel Conditioning Facility (FCF) which houses the treatment of DOE-owned sodium-bonded metal fuel. The electrometallurgical methods used in FCF treat the spent fuel from EBR-II for recycling of the uranium. The radiation field present inside FCF throughout the pyroprocessing stages affects any electronic sensors and devices that may be used for research. An example of such device is a seismoacoustic sensor which detects sound and vibration waves from the equipment in the facility. Seismoacoustic sensors are of interest to research nonproliferation techniques.

INL Poster - Juan Barrera Salazar

Generation IV nuclear reactors introduce several advantages and benefits in terms of safety and efficiency when compared with their predecessors from previous generation. This is due, among many things, to the use of innovative forms of fuel and coolant, different from the conventional ones used in the last decades. Given that these upcoming designs utilize emerging technologies, the related instrumentation is also in the process of being developed; therefore, it is necessary to establish the sensitivity requirements and the effects of uncertainty on different properties of the components and elements of the reactor designs. This report presents the results of simulations that quantify the impacts of the uncertainties of four thermophysical properties of the refrigerant salt (LiF-BeF2) for the Kairos Power benchmark model (g-FHR) for steady state making use of the Sobol’ method through polynomial chaos surrogate modeling. The properties of the salt to which uncertainty was evaluated were density, dynamic viscosity, thermal conductivity and heat capacity. This study was carried out using the Griffin/Pronghorn multiphysics model under the computational resources of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) High Performance Computing (HPC). The results indicate a weak dependence of the uncertainty of thermal conductivity on the quantities of core pressure drop and core outlet temperature.
