Normalized Solar-Induced Fluorescence Responds Earlier Than Vegetation Indices to the 2019 North China Plain Drought

Recently, solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) from satellites has shown potential for evaluating vegetation status and stress responses. Fluorescence quantum yield ($Φ_F$) is essentially linked to vegetation stress. However, the complex physiological and structural responses of SIF and $Φ_F$ to drought need further study. This study normalized SIF as SIFn to account for angular variations and fluctuations in photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), aiming for more accurate drought monitoring. SIFn anomalies were compared to historical baselines (2019–2021 averages) of vegetation indices (VIs), raw SIF, and $Φ_F$ during a 2019 drought in the North China Plain (NCP). Here, the results show SIFn provides an effective method for drought monitoring, showing the earliest decline compared to raw SIF, VIs, and $Φ_F$. In the first two weeks of drought, SIFn decreased by 8.2%, 7.0%, 12.5%, and 8.2% across the four NCP subdivisions. SIFn outperformed other indicators, proving sensitive to early drought detection. SIFn was also examined for tracking drought alleviation by rainfall. The uncertainty under different viewing geometries was quantified. SIFn anomalies showed a strong correlation with rainfall anomalies (R: 0.45 ~ 0.52) and meteorological factors like PAR (R: 0.80 ~ 0.84) and relative humidity (R:0.52 ~ 0.54). The correlation of near-infrared reflectance (NIRv) and $Φ_F$ anomalies with SIF was weak during drought onset (R: 0.16 ~ 0.32) but strong at the end (R: 0.83 ~ 0.87). These suggest both canopy structure (mainly characterized by NIRv) and vegetation chlorophyll ($Φ_F$) are impacted by drought and influence SIF at different stages.

Deriving the Infrared Complex Refractive Indices of Organic Powders for Optical Modeling: Comparison of Methods

Identification of solids via infrared reflection spectroscopy requires a spectral library of all solids likely to be encountered. A confounding factor in populating such a spectral library is that the reflectance spectra of solids vary with their form, including particle size, film thickness, and substrate. To reduce the efforts of experimentally constructing such a library, an alternate strategy is to use the wavelength-dependent optical constants, n and k, of a solid to calculate a series of reflectance spectra corresponding to each scenario or morphology. Because most n/k measurements are best performed on mm-sized crystals, however, the challenge of determining the optical constants increases when a solid is only readily available as a powder, as is often the case. Some organic solids, such as caffeine, are both unavailable in large crystals and difficult to press into pellets. In this study, the infrared optical constants, or complex refractive indices, of caffeine were determined using three different methods: single-angle reflectance, infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry, and quantitative absorbance measurements of KBr pellets. The n and k values derived through each method were used to model the hyperspectral imaging reflectance spectrum of a caffeine film on a steel planchet. Over 1,110 – 870 cm-1, the single-angle reflectance-derived n and k had the best correlation with the experimental spectrum. These results suggest different organic solids may require different methods to determine the most accurate infrared complex refractive indices for synthetic spectral libraries.

Plan Position Indicator Hydrometeor Field Statistics (PPIHYD) Evaluation Data Product Version 1.0

The PPIHYD evaluation data product provides distinct hydrometeor field statistics calculated from U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility scanning radar plan position indicator (PPI) scans. These statistics include the equivalent reflectivity factor and Doppler spectral width percentiles, min/max values, and first four moments (mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis) of distinct hydrometeor features (clustered hydrometeor fields). Statistics also include morphological properties, water content and precipitation rate parameterization-based estimates, and thermodynamic properties interpolated using the Interpolated Sonde value-added product (INTERPSONDE VAP). The data set is organized in tabular form and is accompanied by mask arrays with corresponding indices. This straightforward file structure simplifies scanning radar data processing and renders this data set useful for process understanding and model evaluation studies. This report describes the data set and its processing algorithm and provides some examples.

Empirical Indicators of Transmission Value in the Southeast United States

Concurrent differences in energy price between different parts of the electric grid are a key indicator of the value of additional transmission. In areas without a wholesale electricity market, such as the Southeast, an alternative indicator to price is the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) system lambda data. This economic metric represents the minimized marginal production costs of thermal generators, including fuel and other variable operation and maintenance expenses. Balancing Authorities report a single system lambda for their entire balancing area. Most Southeastern lambdas exhibit sufficient price variation to support a transmission valuation analysis, although incomplete accounting of congestion costs or scarcity rents during peak load hours may underestimate the true value of transmission capacity. With transmission value defined as the annual average hourly absolute price difference between two regions and FERC’s system lambda data used as a price proxy, we find the following results in the Southeast region during 2012-2023 (reported in $\$2024$/MWh): Intra‐regional findings: Annual averages historically span $\$2$–$\$28$/MWh and average $\$12$/MWh in SERTP and span $\$4$–$\$19$/MWh and average $\$9$/MWh in FRCC, disregarding transmission value driven by anomalous data. The ranges of transmission value reported here are large, spanning an order of magnitude in some cases. Much of this variation is driven by year-to-year changes, with 2022 having a particularly high intra-regional transmission value due to elevated natural gas prices. Inter‐regional corridors: Annual average transmission values across three broader regions range from $\$6$ to $\$28$/MWh with a long-term average of $\$11$/MWh. Much of the transmission value is concentrated in a small portion of hours. Across all regions, severe weather—particularly polar vortex events in January 2018, February 2021, and December 2022—drives the largest price spreads. Seasonal patterns also emerge, with summer afternoons and fall mornings contributing consistently to transmission value, as for example between MISO and SOCO in 2023.

RFID-Enabled Tamper-Indicating Seal

Tamper-indicating seals protect sensitive materials, valuable equipment, and critical shipments. Most conventional seals must be checked through manual visual inspection and do not provide a digital record of their condition. Some attempts to remove, alter, or bypass a seal may also leave little visible damage, making tampering difficult to identify during routine inspections. Los Alamos National Laboratory has developed a smart tamper-indicating seal that converts even subtle tampering into a persistent digital record. The seal communicates its identity and status wirelessly through standard radio-frequency identification (RFID) readers, giving organizations a faster, more reliable way to verify that an asset has remained secure.

A physics-based ensemble machine-learning approach to identifying a relationship between lightning indices and binary lightning hazard

To convert lightning indices generated by numerical weather prediction experiments into binary lightning hazard, a machine-learning tool was developed. This tool, consisting of parallel multilayer perceptron classifiers, was trained on an ensemble of planetary boundary layer schemes and microphysics parameterizations that generated four different lightning indices over 1 week. In a subsequent week, the multi-physics ensemble was applied and the machine-learning tool was used to evaluate the accuracy. Unintuitively, the machine-learning tool performed better on the testing dataset than the training dataset. Much of the error may be attributed to mischaracterizing the convection. The combination of the machine learning model and simulations could not differentiate between cloud-to-cloud lightning and cloud-to-ground lightning, despite being trained on cloud-to-ground lightning. It was found that the simulation most representative of the local operational model was the most accurate simulation tested.

Circuit minimizes current drain caused by neon indicator lamps

Circuit lights neon lamp by back leakage current of the driving transistor, rather than by the transistors saturation or ''on-state'' current, thereby eliminating lowering of the voltage necessary for indication. Circuit has operating speed greater than indication circuit using a saturation principle and aids in power rationing.

The use of remote sensors to relate biological and physical indicators to environmental and public health problems

Relationships between biological, ecological and botanical structures, and disease organisms and their vectors which might be detected and measured by remote sensing are determined. In addition to the use of trees as indicators of disease or potential disease, an attempt is made to identify environmental factors such as soil moisture and soil and water temperatures as they relate to disease or health problems and may be detected by remote sensing. The following three diseases and one major health problem are examined: Malaria, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Encephalitis and Red Tide. It is shown that no single species of vascular plant nor any one environmental factor can be used as the indicator of disease or health problems. Entire vegetation types, successional stages and combinations of factors must be used.

System for indicating direction of intruder aircraft

A pilot warning indicator system consisting of a flashing beacon, a detector, and an indicating panel is described. The detector responds to radiant energy from another aircraft's beacon by energizing particular signal lamps positioned in the periphery of the pilot's normal field of view. Since the positions of the energized lamps are related to the direction from which radiant energy is received by the detector, the pilot is apprised of the relative position of an intruder aircraft without any shift in visual fixation.

Analog computer implementation of four instantaneous distortion indices

Dynamic distortion data obtained from inlet engine compatibility test on a J85-GE-13 engine are used to establish the feasibility of using on-line generated indices as control signals. These data are analyzed over time increments of 1.3 seconds on an analog computer. The analog program of four instantaneous distortion indices and their results are presented. A modified approach in determining the extent of distortion is also presented.

Study of a number of biochemical indices of the blood and tissue of dogs after prolonged gamma-radiation

The glucose content in blood and the lipid content in serum and tissues of dogs exposed to chronic radiation for 3 and 5 years were studied. In tissues of these animals, the concentration of soluble DNA and DNA contained in DNP was studied in the spleen, lymph node (deep cervical node) and bone marrow of thigh bones. Results indicate that chronic gamma irradiation significantly changes concentrations of glucose in the blood, and that of several lipids in serum and tissues. A reduction in the concentration of DNP in tested organs reflects changes in the relative number of cells with various nuclear cytoplasmic ratios; most pronounced changes in biochemical indices occur in dogs exposed to chronic gamma radiation in doses of 125 rad per year.

Is the red arc a good indicator of ionosphere-magnetosphere conditions

Weak red arcs were observed on the two consecutive nights of July 12-13 and July 13-14, 1969, at Richland, Washington, whereas no red arcs were detectable on the nights preceding and following the observations. Satellite (Ogo 6) data of electron temperature and density, low-frequency ac electric field, and suprathermal electron flux corresponding to the conjugate region of Richland show no significant variations during these days. The data show elevated electron temperatures and enhanced low-frequency ac noise levels at the expected red arc position in the neighborhood of the density trough, as indicated by previous observations. The data appear to indicate that the optical criterion of red arc occurrence would lead to the conclusion of significantly different ionosphere-magnetosphere conditions during these four nights, whereas the more detailed in situ data show that the conditions were very similar.

Description of a landing site indicator (LASI) for light aircraft operation

An experimental cockpit mounted head-up type display system was developed and evaluated by LaRC pilots during the landing phase of light aircraft operations. The Landing Site Indicator (LASI) system display consists of angle of attack, angle of sideslip, and indicated airspeed images superimposed on the pilot's view through the windshield. The information is made visible to the pilot by means of a partially reflective viewing screen which is suspended directly in frot of the pilot's eyes. Synchro transmitters are operated by vanes, located at the left wing tip, which sense angle of attack and sideslip angle. Information is presented near the center of the display in the form of a moving index on a fixed grid. The airspeed is sensed by a pitot-static pressure transducer and is presented in numerical form at the top center of the display.

Scattering by spheres with nonisotropic refractive indices

Experimental scattering results using a microwave analog technique are described. Artificially constructed axially symmetric spheres with a graphite-like fine-layered composite structure and anisotropic refractive indices were employed to aid high-precision measurements of forward scattering under stable conditions (temperature, physical dimensions, electronic conditions) and to facilitate studies of the extinction and polarization of light by graphite particles in interstellar space. A theoretical approximation utilizing Mie theory for spheres with suitable orientation-dependent refractive indices is applied to account for changes in the complex forward-scattering amplitudes and phase in response to target orientation. The methods are extended to the full range of scattering angles, from the forward direction continuously to about 165 deg and at 180 deg. Agreement between experiment and prediction is close when the symmetry axis is parallel to the polarization.

Investigation of the use of an electronic multifunction display and an electromechanical horizontal situation indicator for guidance and control of powered-lift short-haul aircraft

The use which pilots make of a moving map display from en route through the terminal area and including the approach and go-around flight phases was investigated. The content and function of each of three primary STOLAND displays are reviewed from an operational point of view. The primary displays are the electronic attitude director indicator (EADI), the horizontal situation indicator (HSI), and the multifunction display (MFD). Manually controlled flight with both flight director guidance and raw situation data is examined in detail in a simulated flight experiment with emphasis on tracking reference flight plans and maintaining geographic orientation after missed approaches. Eye-point-of-regard and workload measurements, coupled with task performance measurements, pilot opinion ratings, and pilot comments are presented. The experimental program was designed to offer a systematic objective and subjective comparison of pilots' use of the moving map MFD in conjunction with the other displays.
