Information Extraction on an Earth Science Knowledge Graphs with Semantic Parsing

Knowledge graphs are an important tool, both for representing knowledge and for retrieving information. Fundamentally, they are semantic networks that represent entities and relationships in the form of nodes and edges. A large corpus of natural language text can bebroken down into discrete entities and relationships to form a useful knowledge graph. Existing research breaks down text into a subject, object, and verb relationship triple. Although this is a useful first step, it loses much of the original contextual information encoded within the text. Our process uses a novel 7-tuple approach, in which elements of sentences are programmatically parsed into seven categories: initiator, impacted, receiver, beneficiary, result, and context. In this presentation, we show a knowledge graph built using this 7-tupleprocessing of an Earth science corpus. We explain the techniques used to create the graph and analyze its information retrieval capability while assessing the accuracy and limitations of the results.

Graph Partitioning for Parallel Applications in Heterogeneous Grid Environments

The problem of partitioning irregular graphs and meshes for parallel computations on homogeneous systems has been extensively studied. However, these partitioning schemes fail when the target system architecture exhibits heterogeneity in resource characteristics. With the emergence of technologies such as the Grid, it is imperative to study the partitioning problem taking into consideration the differing capabilities of such distributed heterogeneous systems. In our model, the heterogeneous system consists of processors with varying processing power and an underlying non-uniform communication network. We present in this paper a novel multilevel partitioning scheme for irregular graphs and meshes, that takes into account issues pertinent to Grid computing environments. Our partitioning algorithm, called MiniMax, generates and maps partitions onto a heterogeneous system with the objective of minimizing the maximum execution time of the parallel distributed application. For experimental performance study, we have considered both a realistic mesh problem from NASA as well as synthetic workloads. Simulation results demonstrate that MiniMax generates high quality partitions for various classes of applications targeted for parallel execution in a distributed heterogeneous environment.

Space Shuttle Main Engine component assembly, assignment, and scheduling expert system

The SSME's Component Assembly and Life Management Expert System (CALMES) assists the engine assembly and scheduling process, ensuring that these activities utilize available resources with the greatest possible efficiency. On the basis of parts inventories and a proposed flight schedule, CALMES (1) determined how components may be optimally assembled from the parts inventory, (2) assigns components to flights, (3) schedules component testing, and (4) schedules component assembly. A graph-theoretical optimal matching algorithm, based on a modified simplex method, is applied to the major functions required by the SSME component assembly and scheduling processes.

Chondrules, matrix and coarse-grained chondrule rims in the Allende meteorite - Origin, interrelationships, and possible precursor components

INAA and broad-beam EMPA are used to determine the bulk compositions of 20 chondrules, 13 coarse-grained chondrule rims, and one nonporphyritic CV chondrule (NPCVC) from CV3 Allende (and of one NPCVC each from Leoville and Vigarano). The data are presented in extensive tables and graphs and analyzed in detail. Five probable chondrule precursor components are deduced, and the solar-nebula processes giving rise to them (and probably to the coarse-grained rims as well) are discussed. It is suggested that the formation of the rimmed chondrules involved nebular reheating in space, after the accretion of dusty coatings.

Advances in the development of piezoelectric quartz-crystal oscillators, hydrogen masers, and superconducting frequency standards

This paper describes recent research advances made in the development of radiation-hardened piezoelectric quartz oscillators, hydrogen masers, and superconducting oscillators, with emphasis placed on the principles involved in the operation of these oscillators and the factors affecting the operation. Particular attention is given to the radiation-susceptibility studies of quartz-crystal resonators, the hydrogen-maser relaxation process and noise sources, and low-phase-noise superconducting oscillators. Diagrams of these devices and performance graphs are included.

Computer-aided boundary delineation of agricultural lands

The National Agricultural Statistics Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) presently uses labor-intensive aerial photographic interpretation techniques to divide large geographical areas into manageable-sized units for estimating domestic crop and livestock production. Prototype software, the computer-aided stratification (CAS) system, was developed to automate the procedure, and currently runs on a Sun-based image processing system. With a background display of LANDSAT Thematic Mapper and United States Geological Survey Digital Line Graph data, the operator uses a cursor to delineate agricultural areas, called sampling units, which are assigned to strata of land-use and land-cover types. The resultant stratified sampling units are used as input into subsequent USDA sampling procedures. As a test, three counties in Missouri were chosen for application of the CAS procedures. Subsequent analysis indicates that CAS was five times faster in creating sampling units than the manual techniques were.

A survey of compiler development aids

A theoretical background was established for the compilation process by dividing it into five phases and explaining the concepts and algorithms that underpin each. The five selected phases were lexical analysis, syntax analysis, semantic analysis, optimization, and code generation. Graph theoretical optimization techniques were presented, and approaches to code generation were described for both one-pass and multipass compilation environments. Following the initial tutorial sections, more than 20 tools that were developed to aid in the process of writing compilers were surveyed. Eight of the more recent compiler development aids were selected for special attention - SIMCMP/STAGE2, LANG-PAK, COGENT, XPL, AED, CWIC, LIS, and JOCIT. The impact of compiler development aids were assessed some of their shortcomings and some of the areas of research currently in progress were inspected.

Software reliability studies

There are many software reliability models which try to predict future performance of software based on data generated by the debugging process. Our research has shown that by improving the quality of the data one can greatly improve the predictions. We are working on methodologies which control some of the randomness inherent in the standard data generation processes in order to improve the accuracy of predictions. Our contribution is twofold in that we describe an experimental methodology using a data structure called the debugging graph and apply this methodology to assess the robustness of existing models. The debugging graph is used to analyze the effects of various fault recovery orders on the predictive accuracy of several well-known software reliability algorithms. We found that, along a particular debugging path in the graph, the predictive performance of different models can vary greatly. Similarly, just because a model 'fits' a given path's data well does not guarantee that the model would perform well on a different path. Further we observed bug interactions and noted their potential effects on the predictive process. We saw that not only do different faults fail at different rates, but that those rates can be affected by the particular debugging stage at which the rates are evaluated. Based on our experiment, we conjecture that the accuracy of a reliability prediction is affected by the fault recovery order as well as by fault interaction.

Bipolar supernova remnants and the obliquity dependence of shock acceleration

The diffusive shock acceleration mechanism proposed to explain the bipolarity observed in the synchrotron radio emission of young adiabatically expanding shell SNRs is investigated by means of numerical simulations. The theoretical basis of the SNR models and the numerical computation methods are explained, and the results are presented in graphs and synthetic radio maps and discussed in detail. It is found that the efficiency of the acceleration process depends on the obliquity angle theta(Bn) between the shock normal and the uniform magnetic field: models with theta(Bn) of about 90 deg can reproduce the observed azimuthal intensity ratios in most cases, but models with theta(Bn) near 0 deg cannot.

Orion Scripted Interface Generator (OrionSIG)

The Orion spacecraft undergoing development at NASA and Lockheed Martin aims to launch the first humans to set foot on asteroids and Mars.' Sensors onboard Orion must transmit back to Earth astronomical amounts of data recording almost everything in 50,231 lb. (22,784 kg)2 of spacecraft, down to the temperatures, voltages, or torsions of even the most minor components. This report introduces the new Orion Scripted Interface Generator (OrionSIG) software created by summer 2013 NASA interns Robert Dooling and Samuel Harris. OrionSIG receives a list of Orion variables and produces a script to graph these measurements regardless of their size or type. The program also accepts many other input options to manipulate displays, such as limits on the graph's range or commands to graph different values in a reverse sawtooth wave. OrionSIG paves the way for monitoring stations on Earth to process, display, and test Orion data much more efficiently, a helpful asset in preparation for Orion's first test mission in 2014. The Analysis of Image Segmentation Hierarchies with a Graph-based Knowledge Discovery System

Currently available pixel-based analysis techniques do not effectively extract the information content from the increasingly available high spatial resolution remotely sensed imagery data. A general consensus is that object-based image analysis (OBIA) is required to effectively analyze this type of data. OBIA is usually a two-stage process; image segmentation followed by an analysis of the segmented objects. We are exploring an approach to OBIA in which hierarchical image segmentations provided by the Recursive Hierarchical Segmentation (RHSEG) software developed at NASA GSFC are analyzed by the Subdue graph-based knowledge discovery system developed by a team at Washington State University. In this paper we discuss out initial approach to representing the RHSEG-produced hierarchical image segmentations in a graphical form understandable by Subdue, and provide results on real and simulated data. We also discuss planned improvements designed to more effectively and completely convey the hierarchical segmentation information to Subdue and to improve processing efficiency.

RENEW v3.2 user's manual, maintenance estimation simulation for Space Station Freedom Program

RENEW is a maintenance event estimation simulation program developed in support of the Space Station Freedom Program (SSFP). This simulation uses reliability and maintainability (R&M) and logistics data to estimate both average and time dependent maintenance demands. The simulation uses Monte Carlo techniques to generate failure and repair times as a function of the R&M and logistics parameters. The estimates are generated for a single type of orbital replacement unit (ORU). The simulation has been in use by the SSFP Work Package 4 prime contractor, Rocketdyne, since January 1991. The RENEW simulation gives closer estimates of performance since it uses a time dependent approach and depicts more factors affecting ORU failure and repair than steady state average calculations. RENEW gives both average and time dependent demand values. Graphs of failures over the mission period and yearly failure occurrences are generated. The averages demand rate for the ORU over the mission period is also calculated. While RENEW displays the results in graphs, the results are also available in a data file for further use by spreadsheets or other programs. The process of using RENEW starts with keyboard entry of the R&M and operational data. Once entered, the data may be saved in a data file for later retrieval. The parameters may be viewed and changed after entry using RENEW. The simulation program runs the number of Monte Carlo simulations requested by the operator. Plots and tables of the results can be viewed on the screen or sent to a printer. The results of the simulation are saved along with the input data. Help screens are provided with each menu and data entry screen.

Associative Pattern Recognition In Analog VLSI Circuits

Winner-take-all circuit selects best-match stored pattern. Prototype cascadable very-large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuit chips built and tested to demonstrate concept of electronic associative pattern recognition. Based on low-power, sub-threshold analog complementary oxide/semiconductor (CMOS) VLSI circuitry, each chip can store 128 sets (vectors) of 16 analog values (vector components), vectors representing known patterns as diverse as spectra, histograms, graphs, or brightnesses of pixels in images. Chips exploit parallel nature of vector quantization architecture to implement highly parallel processing in relatively simple computational cells. Through collective action, cells classify input pattern in fraction of microsecond while consuming power of few microwatts.

A Web Based Collaborative Design Environment for Spacecraft

In this era of shrinking federal budgets in the USA we need to dramatically improve our efficiency in the spacecraft engineering design process. We have come up with a method which captures much of the experts' expertise in a dataflow design graph: Seamlessly connectable set of local and remote design tools; Seamlessly connectable web based design tools; and Web browser interface to the developing spacecraft design. We have recently completed our first web browser interface and demonstrated its utility in the design of an aeroshell using design tools located at web sites at three NASA facilities. Multiple design engineers and managers are now able to interrogate the design engine simultaneously and find out what the design looks like at any point in the design cycle, what its parameters are, and how it reacts to adverse space environments.

Implementing an Automated Antenna Measurement System

We developed an automated measurement system using a PC running a LabView application, a Velmex BiSlide X-Y positioner, and a HP85l0C network analyzer. The system provides high positioning accuracy and requires no user supervision. After the user inputs the necessary parameters into the LabView application, LabView controls the motor positioning and performs the data acquisition. Current parameters and measured data are shown on the PC display in two 3-D graphs and updated after every data point is collected. The final output is a formatted data file for later processing.

Program Analyzes Spacecraft/Ground Radio Links

A versatile computer program analyzes the link-design control table necessary for designing the telecommunication subsystem of a spacecraft in orbit around the Earth or on a deep-space mission. The program helps to calculate all the important parameter values for spacecraft-to-ground telemetry links and ground-to-spacecraft command links. The program also enables the design of turn-around ranging and one-way ranging links, which are very useful for determining the positions of spacecraft and for satisfying various other operational needs. The user can specify several aspects of spacecraft telecommunication-subsystem design, including the nature of the antenna (paraboloidal reflector, patch, dipole, etc.), the power-amplifier rating, and the link data rate. The program enables the use of comparative design procedures and includes an extensive database on the capabilities, attributes, and costs of commercially available telecommunications equipment. Hence, the program can also perform cost analyses. The software includes an extensive ground-station database, so that link design can be carried out using different ground stations in a comparative process in an effort to select the best design. The output of the program is in the form of graphs as well as numbers.
