Crystallographic Orientation Dependence of Mechanical Responses of FeCrAl Micropillars

Iron-chromium-aluminum (FeCrAl) alloys are used in automobile exhaust gas purifying systems and nuclear reactors due to its superior high-temperature oxidation and excellent corrosion resistance. Single-phase FeCrAl alloys with a body centered cubic structure plastically deform through dislocation slips at room temperature. Here, we investigated the orientation dependence of mechanical responses of FeCrAl alloy through testing single-crystal and bi-crystal micropillars in a scanning electron microscopy at room temperature. Single-crystal micropillars were fabricated with specific orientations which favor the activity of single slip system or two slip systems or multiple slip systems. The strain hardening rate and flow strength increase with increasing the number of activated slip system in micropillars. Bi-crystal micropillars with respect to the continuity of slip systems across grain boundary were fabricated to study the effect of grain boundary on slip transmission. The high geometrical compatibility factor corresponds to a high flow strength and strain hardening rate. Experimental results provide insight into understanding mechanical response of FeCrAl alloy and developing the mechanisms-based constitutive laws for FeCrAl polycrystalline aggregates.

Thermal and Criticality Analysis of the Plasma Core Reactor

Radiative heat transfer to the propellant and reactor criticality for a fissionable gaseous rocket engine are analyzed to determine their interdependence. The necessity for propellant thicknesses of approximately 1-3 m due to poor thermal absorption properties of hydrogen significantly affects reactor critical radius and mass. The two primary adverse effects are: (1) increased absorption in the reflector- moderator for a given reflector thickness and (2) poor utilization of thermal neutrons by the core due to the lower geometrical view factor of the core for the reflector walls. In fact, there is a minimum core radius at a particular propellant thickness which allows the system to “go” critical. Engine performance is limited primarily to two regions of operation: the first, a specific impulse of approximately 1550 sec at a thrust level of 2 x 10(exp 6) lb. and second, a specific impulse of approximately 2200 sec at a thrust level of 5.3 x 10(exp 6) lb.

Lunar Flight Study Series: Volume 6. A Study of Geometrical and Terminal Characteristics of Earth-Moon Transits Embedded in the Earth-Moon Plane

This report represents the results of a study of coplanar earth-moon transits. The study was initiated to provide information concerning coplanar geometrical characteristics of earth-moon trnasits. The geometrical aspects of transit behavior are related to variations injection conditions. The model of the earth-moon system used in this investigation is the Jacobian model of the restricted three body problem. All transits considered in this study are restricted to the moon-earth plane (MEP).

Orbiter heat flux computer program

A two-phased contract is currently underway to develop 1) a set of parametric curves of absorbed heat flux for specific geometries, and 2) a generalized computer program whose output is absorbed heat flux on the surfaces of a planet orbiting spacecraft. The absorbed heat fluxes include the effects of blockage by and reflections from adjacent spacecraft surfaces, assuming all surfaces to be diffuse. The final computer program will calculate fluxes on any of ten arbitrarily positioned plane surfaces, with any surface properties, planetary radiation characteristics, solar intensity, and orbital parameters. Outputs will be heat fluxes versus time, geometrical configuration factors, and radiant flux interchange factors.
