A signal conditioner which ensures that peak and low values during vibration testing are not lost during nonlinear or asymmetric vibration testing on small structures is described. The trapped signals may be for acceleration, velocity, or displacement. The test signal is sent through an analog circuit to a multiplexer, which resets to zero each time a zero-line is crossed by another incoming signal. Peak positive and negative amplitude and frequency are retained and nonsymmetric responses are thus detected, rather than averaged out.
Single-ended notch design facilitates accurate measurements of crack progression. Novel test specimen and novel loading fixture and fracture testing of materials under Mode II, or sliding-mode, loading. Testing required for analysis of failures in structural materials, bearings, and the like.
The inherent brittleness of glass invariably leads to a large variability in strength data and a time dependence in strength. Leading rate plays a large role in strength values. Glass is found to be weaker when supporting loads over long periods of time as compared to glass which undergoes rapid leading. These properties complicate the structural design allowables for the utilization of glass components in an application such as Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF). The test methodology to obtain parameters which can be used to predict the reliability and life time of Zerodur glass-ceramic which is to be used for the mirrors in the AXAF is described.
Single and two-phase heat transport systems for the thermal control of large space facilities require fluid lines that traverse joints and either rotate or move in some other manner. Flexible hoses are being considered as one means of traversing these joints. To test the resilience of flexible hoses to bending stress, a test assembly was constructed to determine the number of flexing cycles the hoses could withstand before losing their ability to maintain a constant pressure. Corrugated metal hoses and Teflon hoses were tested at different pressures with nitrogen gas. The metal hoses had lives ranging from 30,000 to 100,000 flexing cycles. But, even after 400,000 cycles, the Teflon hoses remained essentially intact, though some leakage in the convoluted Teflon is noted.
