A comparison of CMG steering laws for High Energy Astronomy Observatories (HEAOs)

A comparison of six selected control moment gyro steering laws for use on the HEAO spacecraft is reported. Basic equations are developed to project the momentum and torque of four skewed, single gimbal CMGs into vehicle coordinates. In response to the spacecraft attitude error signal, six algorithms are derived for controlling the CMG gimbal movements. HEAO performance data are obtained using each steering law and compared on the basis of such factors as accuracy, complexity, singularities, gyro hang-up and failure adaption. Moreover, each law is simulated with and without a magnetic momentum management system. The performance of any steering law is enhanced by the magnetic system. Without magnetics, the gimbal angles get large and there are significant differences in steering law performances due to cross coupling and nonlinearities. The performance of the pseudo inverse law is recommended for HEAO.

Digital second-order phase-locked loop

A digital second-order phase-locked loop is disclosed in which a counter driven by a stable clock pulse source is used to generate a reference waveform of the same frequency as an incoming waveform, and to sample the incoming waveform at zero-crossover points. The samples are converted to digital form and accumulated over M cycles, reversing the sign of every second sample. After every M cycles, the accumulated value of samples is hard limited to a value SGN = + or - 1 and multiplied by a value delta sub 1 equal to a number of n sub 1 of fractions of a cycle. An error signal is used to advance or retard the counter according to the sign of the sum by an amount equal to the sum.

Launch vehicle attitude control

The minor loop and minor loop support modules which maintain correct vehicle attitude control by generating vehicle attitude error signals were verified. The logic is checked during boost and orbit (unusual timing situations necessitate the additional orbit checks) and the constants used by these modules checked at every point during the flight. Since the same logic instructions are used throughout the flight with only the constants changing, verification of the logic at two points and the constants at all points verify the logic throughout the flight.

Servo corrects interferometer-mirror tilt

Three detectors sense He-Ne laser beam; one senses reference phase while others, at right angles to first, sense phase offset for each axis. Analog output of axis detectors is multiplied separately by reference output to give X and Y error signals that are then fed to respective X and Y actuators.

Digital image correlation techniques applied to LANDSAT multispectral imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. Automatic image registration and resampling techniques applied to LANDSAT data achieved accuracies, resulting in mean radial displacement errors of less than 0.2 pixel. The process method utilized recursive computational techniques and line-by-line updating on the basis of feedback error signals. Goodness of local feature matching was evaluated through the implementation of a correlation algorithm. An automatic restart allowed the system to derive control point coordinates over a portion of the image and to restart the process, utilizing this new control point information as initial estimates.

Interferometer mirror tilt correcting system

An interferometer is described, having several means for automatically adjusting the angular tilt of a reflecting surface in one of two paths to maintain the exit beams from the two paths parallel to each other. Three detectors at the output of the interferometer were disposed on mutually perpendicular axes which define a plane normal to the nominal exit beam axis. One detector at the origin of the axes was used as a reference for separate phase difference comparison with the outputs of the other two detectors on the X and Y axes to develop servo error signals.

Analysis and design of optically pumped far infrared oscillators and amplifiers

A waveguide laser oscillator was designed and experimental measurements made of relationships among output power, pressure, pump power, pump frequency, cavity tuning, output beam pattern, and cavity mirror properties for various active gases. A waveguide regenerative amplifier was designed and gain measurements were made for various active gases. An external Fabry-Perot interferometer was fabricated and used for accurate wavelength determination and for measurements of the refractive indices of solids transparent in the far infrared. An electronic system was designed and constructed to provide an appropriate error signal for use in feedback control of pump frequency. Pump feedback from the FIR laser was decoupled using a vibrating mirror to phase modulate the pump signal.

The false lock performance of Costas loops with hard-limited in-phase channel

The ability of a Costas loop to false lock on a data sideband is a problem which must be dealt with in the design of suppressed-carrier receivers which employ such loops for carrier reconstruction. For conventional Costas loops wherein the error signal is formed from the product of two analog signals, the false lock problem has recently been investigated by the author and others and is now well understood. For implementation reasons associated with the reduction of dc offsets, it is often desirable to hard-limit the output of the in-phase channel and replace the analog multiplier which forms the above product with a chopper-type device. The false lock behavior of such a Costas loop with hard-limited in-phase channel is quite different from that of the conventional Costas loop and is the subject of investigation in this paper. Results are also presented for a modified version of the Costas loop wherein the quadrature arm filter is removed.

Attitude determination techniques for Nimbus 6 and Nimbus G

Techniques for measuring attitude deviations in the Nimbus 6 and Nimbus G 3-axis stabilized, zero-momentum, earth observation satellites are presented. The on-orbit telemetered data include scanner roll and pitch error signals, an illuminated DSAS which can read the azimuth and elevation of the sunline when the spacecraft is not in the umbra, the signal from the single gyro in the RMP, and the momenta of the reaction wheels. Mathematical methods for interpreting the measured data are described with attention to filter equations, especially the Kalman filter because of its ability to eliminate high frequency noise.

Remanent magnetization stratigraphy of lunar cores

Depth dependent fluctuations have been observed in the natural remanent magnetizations (NRM) of drive cores and drill strings from Apollo 16 and 17 missions. Partial demagnetization of unstable secondary magnetizations and identification of characteristic error signals from a core which is known to have been recently disturbed allow us to identify and isolate the stable NRM stratigraphy in double drive core 60010/60009 and drill strings 60002-60004. The observed magnetization fluctuations persist after normalization to take into account depth dependent variations in the carriers of stable NRM. We tentatively ascribe the stable NRM stratigraphy to instantaneous records of past magnetic fields at the lunar surface and suggest that the stable NRM stratigraphy technique could develop as a new relative time-stratigraphic tool, to be used with other physical measurements such as relative intensity of ferromagnetic resonance and charged particle track density to study the evolution of the lunar regolith.

System for and method of freezing biological tissue

Biological tissue is frozen while a polyethylene bag placed in abutting relationship against opposed walls of a pair of heaters. The bag and tissue are cooled with refrigerating gas at a time programmed rate at least equal to the maximum cooling rate needed at any time during the freezing process. The temperature of the bag, and hence of the tissue, is compared with a time programmed desired value for the tissue temperature to derive an error indication. The heater is activated in response to the error indication so that the temperature of the tissue follows the desired value for the time programmed tissue temperature. The tissue is heated to compensate for excessive cooling of the tissue as a result of the cooling by the refrigerating gas. In response to the error signal, the heater is deactivated while the latent heat of fusion is being removed from the tissue while the tissue is changing phase from liquid to solid.

A relationship between eye movement patterns and performance in a precognitive tracking task

Eye movements made by various subjects in the performance of a precognitive tracking task are studied. The tracking task persented by an antiaircraft artillery (AAA) simulator has an input forcing function represented by a deterministic aircraft fly-by. The performance of subjects is ranked by two metrics. Good, mediocre, and poor trackers are selected for analysis based on performance during the difficult segment of the tracking task and over replications. Using phase planes to characterize both the eye movement patterns and the displayed error signal, a simple metric is developed to study these patterns. Two characterizations of eye movement strategies are defined and quantified. Using these two types of eye strategies, two conclusions are obtained about good, mediocre, and poor trackers. First, the eye tracker who used a fixed strategy will consistently perform better. Secondly, the best fixed strategy is defined as a Crosshair Fixator.

Using model order tests to determine sensory inputs in a motion study

In the study of motion effects on tracking performance, a problem of interest is the determination of what sensory inputs a human uses in controlling his tracking task. In the approach presented here a simple canonical model (FID or a proportional, integral, derivative structure) is used to model the human's input-output time series. A study of significant changes in reduction of the output error loss functional is conducted as different permutations of parameters are considered. Since this canonical model includes parameters which are related to inputs to the human (such as the error signal, its derivatives and integration), the study of model order is equivalent to the study of which sensory inputs are being used by the tracker. The parameters are obtained which have the greatest effect on reducing the loss function significantly. In this manner the identification procedure converts the problem of testing for model order into the problem of determining sensory inputs.

Reliability breakthrough: An antenna deployment/positioning mechanism with electrical and mechanical redundancy

An Antenna Positioner Mechanism (APM) was developed for deployment of an antenna reflector and for fine granularity closed loop tracking of the antenna in response to RF beacon error signals. By utilizing permanent magnet stepper motors, spur gearheads, irreversible single threat worm/wheel assemblies and a miter gear differential, full electrical and mechanical redundancy was realized. Two versions of this design were generated: one is a weight-optimized design with a clutch for overload protection and one is a more rugged unit without a clutch.
